Public Wi-Fi is usually safe, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), because encryption is now widespread. A VPN can add an encrypted connection between your device and the VPN provider, but it does not make you anonymous. The available evidence supports a careful look at three providers’ features and audit disclosures—not a defensible ranking of five “best” VPNs.
Is public Wi-Fi safe, and do you need a VPN?
The FTC says that “because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” That is not a reason to ignore basic precautions: check that websites use HTTPS, keep your device and apps updated, and protect your accounts. The FTC’s consumer guidance explains how to check for HTTPS or a browser lock indicator: FTC: Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe?
HTTPS encrypts information between your browser and the website. A VPN creates a separate encrypted tunnel between your device and the VPN service, which can limit what the local Wi-Fi operator sees about your traffic. In exchange, you are trusting the VPN provider with that connection. The FTC cautions that a VPN “doesn’t render you anonymous.” It does not prevent all tracking, phishing, malware, or account compromise. See the FTC’s explanation of VPNs: Choosing a VPN App.
The FTC’s older public-Wi-Fi advice says not to assume a network uses encryption. Treat that as a useful precaution, not a claim that most current hotspots are unencrypted: the FTC’s newer guidance says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because encryption is widespread.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What to look for in a VPN for hotspots
- Automatic connection on unfamiliar Wi-Fi: This can reduce the chance of using a VPN tunnel unintentionally left disconnected. Check the app’s settings and platform-specific instructions.
- Kill-switch behavior: A kill switch can block internet traffic if the VPN connection drops, but its exact operation varies by operating system and app. Confirm what it does on the device you will use.
- Captive-portal support: Hotels, airports, and cafés may require a browser sign-in before internet access works. Auto-connect or a kill switch can interfere with that page. Follow the provider’s steps to complete the portal login, then reconnect the VPN.
- Protocols and platform support: Check that the VPN supports your devices and offers protocols appropriate to them. A feature listed for one platform should not be assumed to work identically on another.
- Evidence behind privacy claims: Treat “no logs” as a provider claim and read what an audit examined and when. An audit addresses a defined scope at a point in time; it is not a blanket guarantee of privacy.
What the available provider information establishes
The information available for this comparison covers official documentation from three providers. It does not establish five comparable choices or a winner. The profiles below describe provider-published features and disclosures, not independent head-to-head test results.
NordVPN
NordVPN’s support documentation covers automatic connections, kill-switch behavior, DNS leak protection, and supported protocols. Details depend on the operating system and app version, so check the instructions for your specific device rather than assuming the same controls apply everywhere. NordVPN also documents a captive-portal workaround: temporarily turn off auto-connect or the kill switch if the portal will not load, sign in to the network, then reconnect the VPN and restore the settings. Start with its captive-portal instructions and automatic connection documentation.

Proton VPN
Proton VPN says its apps support WireGuard and OpenVPN, offer a kill switch, and undergo independent app audits. The company also publishes a no-logs policy. These are provider statements and disclosures, not a guarantee that a user is anonymous or that every platform behaves the same way. Review Proton’s kill-switch information, no-logs audit information, and app audit and open-source information.

How to use a VPN at a hotel, airport, or café
- Join the hotspot and complete its sign-in page. If the captive portal does not appear, temporarily disable VPN auto-connect or the kill switch as the provider instructs.
- Reconnect the VPN after sign-in. Confirm the app shows an active connection before using it for traffic you want routed through the VPN.
- Check for HTTPS on websites. A VPN does not replace the encryption between your browser and the site.
- Keep your device and apps current. A VPN does not repair outdated software or protect an account if its credentials are compromised.
Why this is not a five-VPN ranking
A fair “best five” list needs comparable evidence for all five services—for example, platform-specific hotspot behavior, audit scope and dates, and independently verified plan details. The available provider information does not supply that comparison, current prices, subscription limits, or reproducible performance tests. Naming two more services or declaring a winner would imply evidence that has not been established. Treat the three profiles above as starting points for checking features and trust disclosures, not as a ranked shortlist.
