For most Android owners in October 2026, start with Gemini—if your phone, Google account, language, and country support it—then compare the exact tasks you need. Check device controls, calls, connected apps, activation methods, Galaxy-specific features, and accessory behavior before making it your default. Google is phasing out Google Assistant on mobile, so an assistant that worked on a phone or paired accessory may not remain available indefinitely.
This guide helps you choose and verify an assistant on the Android device you already own. It does not claim that one assistant is more accurate, faster, more private, or better at speech recognition; the available product documentation does not provide a comparable independent test.
Start with the assistant your phone can actually use
Android does not offer one identical assistant experience on every phone. Availability depends on the model, Android and manufacturer software, signed-in account, language, country or region, permissions, and sometimes a work or school subscription. A feature shown in an app may therefore be unavailable when that app is not the phone’s default digital assistant.

For an eligible Android phone, Gemini is the main Google mobile option. Samsung Galaxy owners may also have Bixby and, on supported configurations, can select Google or Alexa as the default. Google Assistant remains documented on some phones, but its mobile availability is being removed in stages.
What changed with Google Assistant in 2026
In an August 6, 2026 Google Assistant Community announcement, a Google employee said removal of Google Assistant from mobile would begin September 3, 2026 and could take several weeks. The notice describes a phased rollout, so two otherwise similar devices may show different options while the change propagates. On an affected phone, tablet, or paired device, Google says you will not be able to switch back to Google Assistant after it is removed.
The announcement distinguishes mobile and mobile-paired hardware from other products. Nest and Home speakers and displays are described as unaffected, while cars with Google built-in can continue using Google Assistant beyond September 3, 2026. Watches, earbuds, headphones, Android Auto connections, and other accessories can depend on how they pair with the phone, so verify each one rather than assuming the phone’s setting applies everywhere.

Because the rollout is staged, treat the setting on your own device as authoritative. Google’s support instructions still describe switching from Gemini to Google Assistant where that option remains available, but the option may disappear after the rollout reaches your phone.
Compare assistants by the jobs you need
Use this checklist before choosing a default. It separates capabilities that are often confused: conversational answers, device control, phone calls, app connections, and manufacturer-specific actions.
| Decision area | What to verify | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Phone model, Android version, Google or Samsung account, language, country, and account type | Gemini is not available to every device, account, language, or location. Work and school accounts can have feature limitations. |
| Device actions | Alarms and timers, settings, volume, notifications, camera, screenshots, and power controls | Gemini Device assistance supports a defined set of actions. Some actions require Google app permissions or the Google app to be the default assistant. |
| Calls and contacts | Phone app, contact synchronization, permissions, and an active mobile plan | Gemini can make calls through the device Phone app when the stated account, contact, permission, and mobile-plan requirements are met. |
| Activation | “Hey Google,” Voice Match, a power or home gesture, button shortcut, and lock-screen use | Voice and touch activation are configurable, but labels and available gestures differ by manufacturer and device. |
| Galaxy integration | Bixby device commands, reminders, Samsung account, and available default-assistant choices | Samsung documents Bixby as a Galaxy assistant and says supported Galaxy configurations can choose Google or Alexa as a default. |
| Continuity | Watch, earbuds or headphones, Android Auto, smart speakers, and the vehicle system | Google’s transition notice treats phone-paired devices, Nest or Home products, and cars with Google built-in differently. Check each product. |
Gemini: the default starting point for eligible Android phones
Gemini can become the primary assistant when the Google app is selected as the phone’s default assist app. You can interact by voice or touch. “Hey Google” and some other features are not available in every language, country, or account type, so eligibility is a prerequisite rather than a guarantee that every feature will appear.

What Gemini can do on the device
Gemini’s Device assistance covers supported quick actions such as managing certain settings, controlling volume, taking a photo or screenshot, and powering off the device. The supported action set is narrower than the phrase “control your phone” suggests; check the controls presented on your device instead of assuming any setting can be changed by voice.

Reading and replying to notifications requires notification access. Some device actions require the Google app to be the default assistant. If a request fails, check those two prerequisites before changing assistants.
Calls and connected apps
Gemini can place calls through the phone’s Phone app when the Android device has an active mobile plan and contacts are set up, with the required permissions granted. A connected-app request can also depend on the particular app, account, and permission configuration. Test the actions you actually use—calling a contact, starting navigation, or working with a calendar or messaging app—rather than relying on a general compatibility label.
Who should choose Gemini
- Choose it first if your phone and account are eligible and you want Google’s current conversational mobile assistant.
- Choose it when supported Device assistance actions matter and you are willing to grant the required Google and notification permissions.
- Choose it when calling through the Phone app and Google-connected workflows are more important than manufacturer-specific commands.
Do not treat eligibility as proof of superior accuracy or privacy. The available documentation establishes features and requirements, not an independent performance ranking.
Google Assistant: check whether the option still exists
Google Assistant may still appear in the default-assistant menu during the transition. Google’s support material documents how to switch from Gemini to Google Assistant where that choice remains available, and it also documents setting the default assistant to None. Labels differ across Android versions and manufacturers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe August 2026 notice is the important compatibility constraint: mobile removal starts September 3 and may take weeks. Once removal reaches an affected phone, tablet, or paired device, Google says it cannot be re-enabled there. Do not select Google Assistant solely because an old tutorial shows a familiar menu; verify that the option is present now and that the accessories you use still support it.

Bixby: the Galaxy-specific choice
Bixby is Samsung’s assistant for Galaxy phones and tablets. Samsung says Bixby Voice requires a Samsung account. You can use Bixby Voice or the Reminder app to create reminders, and Bixby can expose device-specific controls that are not necessarily identical to Google’s Device assistance.
Samsung’s support guidance says a Galaxy user can select a different default assistant, including Google or Alexa, on supported configurations while Bixby remains available. The exact screen depends on the phone model, software version, carrier, and region. A Galaxy phone can therefore have one assistant as the system default while Bixby remains available through its own button, gesture, or app.
One UI 8.5 considerations
Samsung’s 2026 One UI 8.5 announcement describes an updated Bixby as a more conversational device agent focused on Galaxy control. Samsung also cautions that recognition varies with accent, dialect, expression, pronunciation, voice level, and surrounding noise. That is a product description, not an independent comparison with Gemini. If reliable Galaxy settings control is your priority, test the commands on your own model in the rooms and conditions where you normally speak.
Alexa and other third-party assistants
Samsung’s Galaxy support material names Alexa as a possible default assistant on supported configurations. The documentation does not establish a universal Android-wide rule covering every manufacturer, Android version, app version, language, or market. Treat Alexa as a device-specific possibility, not a guaranteed alternative for every Android phone.
For any third-party assistant, use the phone’s Digital assistant app screen as the final check. If the app is not listed there, installing the app does not necessarily make it eligible as the system default. Also verify lock-screen behavior, wake-word support, calls, notifications, and accessory support separately.
Check eligibility before changing anything
- Identify the phone and software. Note the exact model, Android version, manufacturer interface, carrier software, and country. These details affect menus and assistant availability.
- Open the default-assistant setting. Go to Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app, or use Settings search for “digital assistant.” Record every option shown, including None.
- Confirm the account. For Gemini, verify the signed-in Google account, language, and location. Work or school accounts may require a supported plan or license and can have reduced features. For Bixby, sign in to the required Samsung account.
- Check Gemini eligibility. Open the Gemini app or its setup screen and confirm that your device, account, language, and region are supported. If the setup screen says the feature is unavailable, changing the default assistant will not solve that eligibility issue.
- Set the intended default. If using Gemini as the primary assistant, select the Google app as the device’s default assist app. If you are testing Bixby or another listed assistant, select it only after checking the permissions and activation controls it requests.
- Configure activation. Review “Hey Google,” Voice Match, the power or home-button gesture, touch shortcuts, and lock-screen access. Manufacturer menus differ, and a wake word can be unavailable even when touch activation works.
- Review permissions. For Gemini Device assistance, inspect Google app permissions and notification access. For calls, inspect Phone app permissions and contacts access. Grant only the permissions needed for the tasks you intend to use.
- Recheck paired devices. Test the watch, earbuds or headphones, Android Auto connection, speaker, and vehicle separately. A phone change does not guarantee identical behavior on each accessory.
Test your shortlist with real tasks
A short, repeatable test is more useful than a feature list. Run it for each assistant that appears in your default-app menu, using the same room, phone language, contact, and connected apps.

Basic activation
- Try the configured wake word, if available.
- Try the button or gesture shortcut.
- Try a request from the lock screen and note whether unlocking is required.
- Repeat once with background noise similar to your normal use.
Device-control tasks
- Change volume and an ordinary supported setting.
- Set an alarm or timer.
- Take a photo or screenshot if the assistant advertises that action.
- Ask to read or reply to a notification only after granting notification access.
- Check whether a requested action asks for confirmation, requires an unlocked screen, or fails because the Google app is not the default assistant.
Communication and app tasks
- Call a saved contact through the Phone app.
- Try a second contact with a similar name to see how disambiguation is handled.
- Use one connected app that matters to you and verify the account, permissions, and resulting action.
- Repeat the call test with the phone locked if hands-free use is important.
Galaxy-specific tasks
On a Galaxy device, compare the same settings command in Bixby and your chosen default assistant. Check reminders through Bixby Voice or the Reminder app, then verify that the reminder appears where you expect. Keep Bixby available if its Galaxy controls are useful even when another assistant handles general requests.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini is missing from the assistant menu | Device, account, language, location, or software is not eligible | Confirm eligibility in Gemini, check the signed-in account and region, and install available system or Google app updates. |
| The wake word does nothing | Voice Match, language, lock-screen setting, microphone permission, or device support | Review voice activation and lock-screen settings, confirm microphone access, and test the touch or button shortcut. |
| Gemini will not read or reply to notifications | Notification access is disabled | Enable notification access for the required Google component, then retry with a new notification. |
| A device action fails | The action is outside the supported set or the Google app is not the default assistant | Check the Device assistance controls and the default-assistant setting; do not assume every Android setting is supported. |
| A call cannot be placed | No active mobile plan, missing contacts, or Phone app permissions | Confirm the mobile plan, contact synchronization, Phone app permissions, and the exact contact name. |
| Bixby setup stops | Samsung account or Galaxy-specific availability requirement | Sign in to the Samsung account, check the model and software, and review Samsung’s assistant setting for your carrier. |
| Google Assistant disappeared after a switch | The staged mobile transition reached the device | Check the current default-assistant menu. Google says Assistant cannot be switched back on an affected phone, tablet, or paired device after removal. |
| The phone works but an accessory does not | Different product category or pairing behavior | Test that accessory independently. Nest or Home products and cars with Google built-in have different transition treatment from phone-paired devices. |
Choose using a simple decision path
- Is Gemini eligible? If no, choose among the assistants actually listed on your phone and revisit after a supported software, account, language, or regional change. If yes, continue.
- Do you need Google’s supported device actions, calling, and connected-app workflows? If yes, test Gemini with the permissions and default-assistant status those actions require.
- Do Galaxy controls and Samsung reminders dominate your use? If yes, keep Bixby in the comparison even if Gemini is your general-purpose default.
- Do you rely on a wake word or lock-screen operation? Choose the assistant that supports those activation methods on your exact model, not merely in the app’s marketing description.
- Do you depend on a watch, earbuds, car, or speaker? Verify that product separately, especially during Google’s 2026 mobile transition.
- Is the only reason to choose Google Assistant that an old guide recommends it? Check whether it remains selectable today. A staged removal can make that advice obsolete on your device.
Questions that often decide the choice
Can I use Gemini without making it the default assistant?
You can open and use the Gemini app directly, but system-level activation and some Device assistance actions depend on the Google app being the phone’s default assist app. If you want a button, gesture, or wake-word shortcut to invoke it as the primary assistant, set and verify that default.
Can a work or school Google account use Gemini?
Possibly, but eligibility and features can depend on the organization’s plan or license. A personal Google account and a managed account may show different options on the same phone. Confirm access with the account that will actually be used.
Does changing the default assistant remove Bixby?
Not necessarily. Samsung documents configurations in which Google or Alexa is the default while Bixby remains available. Menus and behavior vary by Galaxy model, software, and carrier.
Will Google Assistant still work in my car?
It depends on the car connection. Google’s August 6, 2026 announcement says cars with Google built-in can continue using Google Assistant beyond September 3, while phone-paired devices are part of the mobile transition. Check the vehicle system and the phone connection independently.
Is there a universal list of third-party Android assistants?
No current platform-wide list establishes eligibility across all manufacturers, Android versions, languages, and markets. The reliable check is the Digital assistant app menu on the exact phone.
