The right USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter is determined by your exact phone model, not by the shape of the connector. First confirm that the phone supports USB-C digital audio. Then buy an adapter with a built-in DAC when the manufacturer requires one—newer Galaxy models, for example, require DAC-compatible adapters. Finally, verify microphone and call support if you need the headset for calls.
How to choose a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter that works with your phone
A USB-C plug only tells you how the adapter connects physically. It does not prove that the phone will send audio through that port, that the adapter contains the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) needed by the phone, or that its microphone and call controls will work.
Use this order when shopping:
- Identify the phone’s exact model and region or edition.
- Read the current phone-maker specifications or support page for USB-C digital-audio support.
- Check whether the maker requires an adapter with a built-in DAC.
- Confirm microphone and call support if you need more than music playback.
- After connecting it, check the phone’s USB-C audio settings before declaring the adapter defective.
Google’s Pixel guidance tells owners to verify that USB-C accessories work with digital audio. Samsung’s support guidance for newer Galaxy models says to use a USB Type-C to 3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC and to check that third-party adapters are DAC compatible.

Why a USB-C port does not guarantee headphone compatibility
Traditional 3.5 mm headphone sockets output an analog signal. USB-C is a digital interface, so a phone and adapter must agree on how audio is delivered. In a digital-audio setup, the adapter’s DAC converts the phone’s digital stream into the analog signal expected by wired headphones.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Phone makers implement USB-C audio differently. A model may support digital audio directly, require an active adapter containing a DAC, restrict certain USB-C accessories, or handle headset microphones and call routing separately from music playback. Two phones with identical USB-C ports can therefore produce different results with the same adapter.
There is no universal compatibility list or published failure rate that can predict the result for every phone and adapter combination. The manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model is the authoritative check.
Step 1: identify the exact phone model
Do not shop from a listing that merely says “Android,” “Galaxy,” or “Pixel.” Locate the complete model name and, where shown, the model number.
- Open the phone’s Settings app and look under About phone or an equivalent device-information screen.
- Record the commercial model name, model number, and software or regional variant if the support page distinguishes them.
- If the phone is managed by a carrier, check the carrier’s specification page as well as the maker’s general product page.
Use that information when searching the manufacturer’s support site. A recommendation for one generation or regional edition may not apply to another, even when the devices look alike.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Step 2: verify USB-C digital-audio support
Look for explicit wording about USB-C digital audio, USB audio, or USB-C headphones and adapters. Google’s Pixel support material specifically advises checking that USB-C accessories work with digital audio and checking the phone manufacturer’s information before buying.
What counts as a useful specification
- An explicit statement that the model supports digital audio over USB-C.
- A support article naming compatible USB-C headphones or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter.
- A requirement for an active adapter or a built-in DAC.
- Instructions for enabling USB-C audio in Sound or related settings.
A product listing that only says “USB-C connector” is not enough. Treat vague claims such as “universal” as marketing language until the phone’s own documentation confirms compatibility.
Step 3: determine whether the adapter needs a built-in DAC
A DAC is the component that turns digital audio into the analog signal sent to your 3.5 mm headphones. Some phones expect that conversion to happen inside the adapter rather than inside the phone.

How to read an adapter listing
- Prefer wording such as built-in DAC, digital audio, or DAC compatible when your phone maker requires it.
- Reject listings that describe only a passive pin connection unless the phone documentation explicitly says a passive adapter is supported.
- Check the manufacturer’s technical details rather than relying on a marketplace title or a photograph of the plug.
- Keep the product documentation and return terms until you have tested playback and calls.
A DAC specification does not by itself prove that every phone function will work. Model compatibility and headset-feature support remain separate checks.
Manufacturer adapter or third-party adapter?
You have two practical buying paths: the phone maker’s own accessory, or a third-party adapter that clearly meets the phone’s requirements.
| Choice | What to verify | Advantages | Risks and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone maker’s adapter | Exact phone-model compatibility, current availability, and whether the accessory includes the required DAC | The maker has identified the accessory for its own devices, so compatibility information is usually easier to find | Availability can change, and an accessory named for one model family may not cover every generation |
| Third-party adapter | Explicit digital-audio support, built-in DAC or DAC compatibility when required, and microphone/call support | More choice in cable length, construction, controls, and price | “USB-C” alone proves nothing; unclear specifications can lead to silent playback or missing call functions |
Samsung identifies its own USB Type-C to 3.5 mm Headset Jack Convert Adapter as an option for relevant Galaxy devices. Confirm that the accessory is currently sold and listed for your exact model before ordering. Samsung’s wording for other manufacturers is direct: “If you choose an adaptor from a different manufacturer, always ensure that it is DAC compatible.”

Check microphone and call requirements before buying
Music playback is not the same test as a complete headset connection. The phone may send stereo audio while failing to recognize the headset microphone, in-line buttons, or call routing.

Questions to answer from the phone and adapter documentation
- Does the phone support calls through USB-C audio accessories?
- Does the adapter state support for a headset microphone, not just headphones?
- Are in-line play, pause, volume, or call-answer buttons supported?
- Does the listing describe a four-contact headset connection, if that detail is provided?
Google’s Pixel USB-C earbud support notes that some devices may not allow calls through USB-C earbuds. Therefore, do not infer call support from the presence of a 3.5 mm socket. If calls matter, test with a voice recorder and an actual phone call or meeting app during the return period.
A buying checklist you can use in five minutes
- Write down the model: capture the exact name and model number from Settings > About phone.
- Open the maker’s support page: search the model together with “USB-C digital audio,” “3.5 mm adapter,” or “USB audio.”
- Record the requirement: note whether the maker requires a DAC, names a particular adapter, or gives a warning about unsupported accessories.
- Inspect the candidate listing: look for built-in DAC or DAC-compatible wording, not merely “USB-C.”
- Confirm headset features: check microphone and call support if you will use the adapter for calls.
- Check practical terms: verify that the adapter is new, returnable, and available for your region.
- Save the documentation: keep the phone support page and adapter specifications until testing is complete.
How to set up the adapter
- Unlock the phone and connect the adapter directly to the USB-C port. Avoid adding hubs, docks, or extension pieces during the first test.
- Insert the 3.5 mm headphone plug fully into the adapter.
- Start a local music or video file and raise the volume gradually.
- Check that the phone shows a USB or wired-audio output, if its interface displays one.
- If the adapter has a microphone, make a short recording and place a test call.
- Reconnect the adapter after removing any case that prevents the USB-C plug from seating completely.
Use a known-working pair of wired headphones for the first test. This separates an adapter problem from a damaged headphone cable or plug.
Troubleshoot a silent or unreliable connection
No sound at all
- Remove and reinsert both the USB-C plug and the 3.5 mm plug.
- Test another known-working pair of headphones.
- Check the phone’s volume and output-selection controls.
- Open Sound or connected-device settings and look for a USB-C audio option. Google’s USB-C earbud guidance notes that some devices may require USB-C audio to be enabled.
- Restart the phone and test again without a hub or extension.
- Re-read the phone maker’s compatibility guidance. If the model requires a DAC and the adapter does not explicitly provide one, replace the adapter rather than repeatedly changing settings.
Music works, but calls do not
- Confirm that the phone supports calls through USB-C audio accessories.
- Check whether the adapter supports a headset microphone rather than output-only headphones.
- During a call, open the audio-output control and select the wired headset if the phone offers that choice.
- Test the microphone in a recorder or voice-message app to distinguish a call-routing issue from a microphone issue.
Intermittent audio or one-sided sound
- Inspect the 3.5 mm plug for incomplete insertion, lint, or physical damage.
- Try the headphones directly with another compatible source.
- Try the adapter with another known-compatible phone only as a diagnostic step; a successful test on another phone does not prove compatibility with your model.
- If movement at the USB-C connector changes the sound, stop using the adapter and check for port or cable damage.
Common purchasing mistakes
Assuming every USB-C adapter is active
Some listings omit the DAC specification. If your phone maker requires a built-in DAC, an unspecified adapter is an unresolved compatibility risk, not a safe default.

Testing only music
Playback can succeed while the microphone or call path fails. Include recording and call tests when those functions matter.
Blaming the adapter before checking settings
A disabled USB-C audio option or an unselected output can look like hardware failure. Follow the phone maker’s troubleshooting steps first.
Decision guide
| Your phone documentation says… | Choose | Before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C digital audio is supported and a DAC is required | An adapter explicitly described as having a built-in DAC or being DAC compatible | Confirm the exact model and headset-call features |
| USB-C digital audio is supported, but no adapter type is named | A clearly documented digital-audio adapter; a DAC-equipped model is the safer choice when the specification is unclear | Look for manufacturer confirmation and return protection |
| USB-C audio support is unclear | Do not rely on a generic adapter listing | Find the current phone-maker specification or support answer first |
| Music works but calls are unsupported | An adapter for playback only, or another connection method for calls | Do not assume the microphone will function |
What to remember
The reliable buying method is model-first, specification-second, and feature-testing last. Confirm USB-C digital-audio support for the exact phone, follow any DAC requirement—especially the requirement documented for newer Galaxy models—and verify microphone and call behavior separately. A manufacturer adapter can simplify the compatibility check, while a third-party model is suitable only when its digital-audio and DAC claims are explicit and match the phone maker’s guidance.
