Choose a charger for the exact MacBook model, not simply for the USB-C logo. Check Apple’s recommended minimum wattage, select a USB-C Power Delivery (USB PD) adapter that meets or exceeds it, and then choose either a USB-C charge cable or a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable that matches your Mac and charging goal. A lower-wattage adapter can work but may charge slowly; a compatible higher-wattage adapter is safe because the Mac regulates the power it draws.
For fast charging, the adapter and cable must both support the combination Apple specifies for your model. The practical way to avoid a mismatch is to identify the MacBook first, buy a compliant USB-C PD charger at the required wattage, and verify the actual power in macOS if charging is slower than expected.
Start with the exact MacBook model
MacBook charging requirements vary by family, screen size, year and configuration. There is no single USB-C charger wattage that is ideal for every MacBook. Apple’s current adapter table is the final reference for your particular machine: Use a power adapter with your Mac.
Before shopping, record the model name, screen size and introduction year shown in macOS. You can view the Mac’s identification information from the Apple menu’s “About This Mac” screen; if the description is incomplete, check the model information in System Information. A model identifier is more useful than a retailer’s generic description such as “USB-C MacBook.”

- MacBook Neo: Apple lists a 20W USB-C adapter.
- MacBook Air introduced in 2022 or later: Apple lists 30W for 13-inch configurations, with 35W dual-port, 67W and 70W options depending on the model.
- MacBook Air introduced from 2018 through 2021: Apple lists a 30W adapter and USB-C charge cable.
- 13-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2016 or later: Apple lists 61W.
- 15-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2016 or later: Apple lists 87W.
- 16-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2019: Apple lists 96W.
- 14-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2021 or later: Apple lists multiple adapter choices; use the exact configuration in Apple’s table rather than assuming one number.
- 16-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2021 or later: Apple lists 140W.
These are Apple’s listed adapter recommendations, not a universal rule for every configuration sold under the same family name. When a model has several choices, the Mac’s included adapter and Apple’s live table are safer references than a charger listing that only says it is “for MacBook.”
Understand wattage before you buy
Recommended wattage is a minimum for the best experience
Apple recommends using a power adapter or display that provides at least the minimum wattage recommended for your Mac. A compatible Mac can accept an adapter with either higher or lower wattage, but the consequences differ:
- At or above the recommendation: gives the Mac the power headroom Apple specifies for normal charging and demanding workloads.
- Below the recommendation: can charge more slowly, may struggle to charge while the Mac is under heavy load, and can trigger a slow-charger warning on newer macOS versions.
- Higher than the recommendation: is compatible when the adapter supports USB PD. The Mac negotiates the power it needs; a 140W adapter does not force 140W into a MacBook that requires less.
Wattage is power, calculated as volts multiplied by amps. A charger with several ports may advertise a high total output while allocating less power to an individual USB-C port, especially when other devices are connected. Read the per-port output and the output available with simultaneous charging, not only the largest number on the box.

Do not confuse USB-C with USB Power Delivery
USB-C describes the connector shape. It does not guarantee that a charger can provide laptop-level power. A Mac that charges over USB-C needs an adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD). Apple’s compatibility guidance is explicit: a USB-C Mac can charge from any USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB PD.

When considering a third-party adapter, look for a USB-PD specification, a stated power profile that meets your Mac’s requirement, and certification marks appropriate to the country where it will be used. Apple also says third-party adapters and displays should comply with applicable international and regional regulations and safety standards. Avoid an unlabeled USB-C supply that lists only phone-oriented outputs or omits electrical and safety information.
Choose the cable for the charging path
USB-C to USB-C
Use a USB-C charge cable when your MacBook accepts charging through a USB-C port and your adapter has a USB-C output. The cable must be suitable for the power level you intend to draw. A cable can fit physically while having a lower power rating or limited data capability, so check its stated charging rating when buying one separately.
USB-C to MagSafe 3
Supported MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models can charge through a MagSafe 3 port with a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable and a USB-C PD adapter. MagSafe and USB-C are separate charging paths, even when a Mac has both types of port. MagSafe can leave the Mac’s USB-C ports available for displays, storage or other accessories.

When a 240W cable matters
You do not need a 240W cable merely because you own a MacBook. Apple specifies a 140W USB-C Power Adapter with a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable for fast charging on 16-inch MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later. For 16-inch models introduced in November 2023 or later, Apple also lists a 240W USB-C Charge Cable with that 140W adapter. The cable option is tied to that documented combination; it is not a general requirement for MacBook Air or smaller MacBook Pro models.
Match the charger to your goal
| Goal | What to buy | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Basic charging | A USB-C PD adapter meeting the Mac’s recommended minimum and a compatible USB-C or MagSafe 3 cable | Per-port wattage, USB PD support and the connector on your Mac |
| One charger for a Mac and other devices | A multi-port USB-C PD adapter whose simultaneous-output specification still gives the Mac its required wattage | Whether connecting a phone or tablet reduces the Mac port below its recommendation |
| Documented fast charging | The adapter and cable combination listed by Apple for your model | Model year, adapter wattage, cable type and Apple’s conditions for approximately 50% in around 30 minutes |
| Travel or backup charging | A compact USB-C PD adapter at or above the minimum, provided its sustained per-port output is adequate | Port sharing, regional safety compliance and the cable’s power rating |
Fast charging: the adapter and cable must agree
Apple says MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later and 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later can charge up to around 50 percent in around 30 minutes with an appropriate power source and cable. “Around” is important: Apple describes an approximate result, and charging time varies with settings and environmental conditions. See Apple’s complete combinations in Fast-charge your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.
| MacBook group | Fast-charge requirement described by Apple | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air introduced in 2022 or later | Compatible fast-charge power source and cable | Exact adapter and cable depend on the model; verify Apple’s table |
| 14-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2021 or later | Compatible fast-charge power source and cable | Exact combination is model-specific |
| 16-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2021 or later | 140W USB-C Power Adapter plus USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable | Apple’s stated setup for approximately 50% in around 30 minutes |
| 16-inch MacBook Pro introduced in November 2023 or later | 140W USB-C Power Adapter plus either USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable or Apple-listed 240W USB-C Charge Cable | Use the cable and adapter combination supported for the exact model |
Fast charging is not created by buying the highest-numbered cable alone. A 240W cable connected to an underpowered adapter cannot produce a 140W charging setup, and a high-wattage adapter connected through an unsuitable cable may not deliver the expected result.
Common questions about USB-C MacBook charging
Can I use a USB-C phone charger with my MacBook?
Only if it supports USB PD and provides an appropriate wattage. Many phone chargers provide less power than a MacBook’s recommendation, so they may charge slowly or fail to keep up while you work. Check the charger’s output label and compare its per-port wattage with Apple’s model-specific minimum.

Will a higher-wattage USB-C charger hurt my MacBook?
A compatible USB PD adapter with higher wattage is normally acceptable. The Mac negotiates the power it draws rather than taking the adapter’s maximum automatically. The important conditions are USB PD support, correct electrical and safety compliance, and a cable rated for the intended setup.
Can I connect MagSafe and USB-C chargers at the same time?
No charging speed benefit results from doing so. Apple says the Mac charges through only one port at a time, using the source that provides the most power. Connecting multiple charging sources does not make it charge faster. For the full explanation, see Charge your Mac laptop computer.

Read the adapter label
Apple says the adapter’s wattage is printed on its certification label. On a multi-port charger, inspect the output specification for the port in use and the reduced output that applies when other ports are occupied. A charger marketed as “100W” may provide that amount only from one port under a particular operating condition.

Understand the “Slow Charger” warning
macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later can show “Slow Charger” when the connected setup provides too little power. Treat that message as a power-path diagnosis rather than proof that the battery is defective. Check the adapter’s USB PD capability, the active port, cable rating and whether another device is consuming the charger’s shared output.
A step-by-step buying checklist
- Identify the MacBook. Record the family, screen size and introduction year. Do not choose by connector shape alone.
- Look up the recommended adapter. Use Apple’s current model table and note the minimum wattage for that exact configuration.
- Choose a USB-C PD adapter. Confirm that the individual port you will use meets or exceeds the minimum, including any multi-port sharing condition.
- Choose the charging route. Select USB-C to USB-C if you want direct USB-C charging; select USB-C to MagSafe 3 only if your Mac has MagSafe 3 and you prefer that connection.
- Check the cable’s power rating. For a documented 16-inch MacBook Pro fast-charge setup, use the 140W adapter and Apple-listed cable combination; a 240W cable is relevant only where Apple specifies it.
- Confirm safety information. Use an adapter that states applicable regulatory compliance and provides clear electrical specifications.
- Test the complete setup. Connect the cable directly, inspect AC Charger Information in macOS and watch for a “Slow Charger” message on macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later.
Troubleshoot slow or failed charging
The Mac charges, but slowly
- Compare the adapter’s per-port wattage with Apple’s recommended minimum.
- Disconnect phones, tablets or accessories from a multi-port charger and check whether the Mac’s available output rises.
- Try another USB-C port on the adapter and inspect the cable for damage or a lower stated power rating.
- Check AC Charger Information in System Information to see what macOS detects.
- If macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later reports “Slow Charger,” replace the limiting component: adapter, shared-output arrangement or cable.
The Mac does not charge over USB-C
- Confirm that the adapter explicitly supports USB PD rather than only basic USB charging.
- Use a known-compatible USB-C charge cable and connect it directly to the adapter, bypassing hubs and docks during testing.
- Verify that the Mac model supports USB-C charging; some models rely on MagSafe or have model-specific charging behavior.
- Check the adapter label and AC Charger Information for a detected power source. If no source appears with a compliant adapter and cable, test a different outlet and cable before seeking hardware service.
Fast charging does not reach the expected result
- Confirm that your Mac is one of the Air or Pro generations Apple lists for fast charging.
- Use the exact adapter and cable combination in Apple’s fast-charge guidance, including the 140W adapter requirement for the specified 16-inch Pro setup.
- Remember that “around 50 percent in around 30 minutes” is approximate and affected by settings and environmental conditions.
Practical buying examples
MacBook Air owner replacing a lost charger
First determine whether the Air was introduced in 2018–2021 or in 2022 or later. Both groups can involve a 30W recommendation, but newer 13-inch Air configurations also appear in Apple’s list with 35W dual-port, 67W and 70W options. Buy a USB-C PD adapter that matches the exact entry, then choose USB-C to USB-C or MagSafe 3 only if the Mac supports the latter.
MacBook Pro owner using one charger at a desk
Use the Pro’s screen size and year to select the minimum: Apple lists 61W for 13-inch models introduced in 2016 or later, 87W for 15-inch models introduced in 2016 or later, 96W for 16-inch models introduced in 2019, and 140W for 16-inch models introduced in 2021 or later. A multi-port adapter is practical only when its simultaneous-output specification leaves the Mac port at or above the required level.
16-inch MacBook Pro owner who wants the quickest documented charge
For a 2021-or-later 16-inch model, use Apple’s specified 140W USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. If the model was introduced in November 2023 or later, Apple also lists a 240W USB-C Charge Cable option. Verify the model date before paying for that cable; it is not a universal MacBook accessory requirement.
Bottom line
The correct MacBook charger is a model-specific USB-C PD adapter whose usable per-port wattage meets Apple’s recommendation. Pair it with a cable suited to your chosen USB-C or MagSafe 3 charging path, and use Apple’s exact adapter-and-cable combination when fast charging matters. Higher wattage is safe when the adapter is compliant and USB PD-capable; lower wattage may work but can be slow. When performance is uncertain, the adapter label and macOS AC Charger Information reveal what the Mac is actually receiving.
