Choose the display that fits your room and seating first, then verify its exact HDMI port and console features. A 4K screen with 120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), HDR and automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) is a capable choice for a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S setup, but none of those specifications has been confirmed as required for Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar has not published the game’s resolution, frame-rate modes, HDR implementation or VRR behavior.

Grand Theft Auto VI is currently announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Because display details can change before launch, buy for the console games and other media you use now, with GTA VI compatibility as a sensible requirement rather than a promise of 4K at 120 frames per second.

What is actually confirmed about GTA VI and displays?

Rockstar’s current announcement lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms and gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. The announcement does not specify a resolution target, frame-rate mode, HDR format or VRR support. Until Rockstar or a platform holder publishes those details, any claim that GTA VI will run at 4K/120, 4K/60 or a particular performance mode is speculation.

PlayStation marketing uses stronger language about the console experience. Mary Yee, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote on PlayStation.Blog on June 24, 2026: “Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.” That is a platform-holder statement about PS5 features, not proof of a specific television mode or a recommendation for a particular display.

Therefore, the useful buying question is not “Which screen guarantees the best GTA VI picture?” It is “Which screen gives my console the inputs, refresh options and viewing comfort I want, while leaving room for GTA VI’s eventual settings?”

TV or monitor: choose by the way you play

Neither category is universally better. A television normally suits a sofa, a shared room and several viewers; a monitor normally suits a desk, close viewing and one player. Use the comparison below as a fit test rather than a ranking.

Consideration TV is usually the better fit when… Monitor is usually the better fit when…
Viewing distance You sit several feet away and want a large image from a couch. You sit close at a desk and can see the whole screen without moving your head.
Room and seating More than one person watches, or the console is in a living room or bedroom. The console is at a dedicated desk or compact gaming station.
Screen size You prefer a larger, room-filling image and have enough distance for it to remain comfortable. You want a smaller screen that fits a desk and close-up play.
Other uses The display will also handle broadcast television, films or shared-console use. The same screen will mainly serve a desk, computer and console.
Connections You can select a model whose correct HDMI input supports the console signal you want. You can select a model with a console-compatible HDMI input; some computer-focused models have different port limits.
Sound and convenience You want an integrated living-room setup and remote-controlled media features. You already have desk speakers or a headset and value a compact arrangement.

Measure your seating position before choosing a diagonal size. A larger panel is not automatically more immersive if you sit too close, and a small panel can be difficult to appreciate from across a room. The comfortable size is the one that lets you read menus and see the scene without leaning forward or constantly turning your head.

When a TV makes more sense

Choose a TV when the console is shared, the seating is flexible, or the display will be used for films and ordinary television as well as games. Make sure the model’s gaming specifications apply to the HDMI input you will actually use; a television can have different capabilities on different ports.

When a monitor makes more sense

Choose a monitor for a close desk setup, especially when the console shares space with a computer. Confirm that its HDMI input accepts the console’s intended resolution and refresh rate. A monitor advertised with a high refresh rate through DisplayPort may not provide that same rate through HDMI, so the console connection must be checked separately.

Features worth paying attention to

Resolution and refresh rate

PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120 Hz video output. PlayStation’s wording is explicit: “The PS5 console supports the HDMI 2.1 specification, and it also supports 4K 120Hz video output.” That is the console’s capability, not a guarantee that every game—including GTA VI—will render at 4K and 120 frames per second. The game and the connected screen must support the relevant feature.

A 4K/120 Hz display is useful if you play other compatible games, want headroom for future titles, or prefer a screen that will not need replacing when you add another high-refresh source. It is optional if your games, seating distance or budget do not benefit from it. A 60 Hz 4K display can still be a rational choice when you mainly play cinematic games from a couch and do not need high-refresh modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Variable refresh rate (VRR)

VRR lets a compatible console and display vary refresh timing within the supported range. That can be valuable for games whose frame rate is not fixed, but GTA VI’s VRR behavior has not been announced. Treat VRR as a general console feature, not as evidence of a GTA VI performance mode.

HDR

HDR can expand highlight and shadow range when the game, console and display all implement it correctly. Rockstar has not stated which HDR implementation, if any, GTA VI will use. If you buy an HDR display, check how the exact model handles HDR input and whether you can disable or calibrate it per input; do not buy on the assumption that GTA VI will have a particular HDR mode.

ALLM

ALLM can tell a compatible display to switch automatically to a low-latency picture mode. HDMI 2.1 alone does not prove that a television has ALLM. PlayStation support answers the question directly: “No, please check the instruction manual that came with the display device to check if it supports ALLM.” Verify ALLM as a separate specification in the manual for the exact model.

HDMI 2.1 and the correct port

Do not stop at a product-page headline. Confirm the model number, the HDMI input number and the supported combination of resolution and refresh rate. Features can vary between ports and between closely related models. A display may have one high-bandwidth HDMI input and other inputs with lower limits, so label the port you intend to use before installing the console.

Input response claims

Input-lag figures are model-specific measurements, not category guarantees. Sony reported 6.0 ms input lag for its Z9J in an internal 4K/120-fps HDMI test in 2021 and warned that results can vary by model, environment and conditions. That historical result is neither a current benchmark for all TVs nor a GTA VI measurement. For any named model you consider, use an independent test that states the resolution, refresh rate, picture mode and measurement method.

Do you need a 4K 120 Hz display for GTA VI?

No. There is no official GTA VI specification requiring 4K, 120 Hz or HDMI 2.1. A 120 Hz panel can be sensible future-proofing, but it cannot be presented as necessary for this game.

Buying situation Reasonable priority Why
Large living-room setup, mostly cinematic games Comfortable 4K size, HDR quality and a suitable HDMI input Viewing distance and picture quality may matter more than a high refresh ceiling.
Player who uses several high-refresh console games 4K/120 Hz, VRR and a high-bandwidth HDMI input You can use the capability in compatible games even though GTA VI support is unknown.
Desk setup shared with a computer Correct HDMI bandwidth, VRR and a size suited to close viewing Computer refresh claims do not automatically apply to the console’s HDMI connection.
Keeping the display for many years 4K/120 Hz and VRR if the price and room support them These features provide flexibility for later games and devices, not a GTA VI guarantee.

Sony’s 2021 announcements described 4K at up to 120 frames per second for compatible games on specified BRAVIA XR models. That statement demonstrates what a supported console, game and display can do together; it does not establish GTA VI’s output. Avoid buying a premium HDMI 2.1 screen solely because of an unverified 120-fps rumor.

A step-by-step buying method

  1. Identify the console. Start with the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S you own or plan to buy. GTA VI is announced for those consoles; the cited announcements do not include a PC version.
  2. Map the room. Measure the distance from the normal seat to the display location, note whether several people will watch, and decide whether the screen is for a sofa or a desk.
  3. Choose the category. Select a TV for shared-room and couch use, or a monitor for close desk use. If both uses matter, prioritize the seating position in which you will play most often.
  4. Set a minimum feature list. Decide whether you need 4K, 120 Hz, VRR, HDR and ALLM. Mark 120 Hz as optional unless your other games or devices require it.
  5. Verify the exact model number. On the manufacturer’s specification page and manual, check the precise model—not just the product family—and record which HDMI input supports the desired resolution and refresh rate.
  6. Check each feature independently. Look for separate entries for VRR, HDR and ALLM. Do not infer ALLM from an HDMI 2.1 label.
  7. Check the included accessories and firmware policy. Confirm that the display can receive firmware updates and that the supplied or recommended cable can carry the signal you intend to use.
  8. Buy for confirmed uses. Make sure the display is worthwhile for your current games, films, work or computer before relying on unannounced GTA VI modes.

PS5 connection and 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting

If a PS5 does not show the expected signal, troubleshoot the connection before assuming the display or console is defective. PlayStation’s support guidance points to the display capability, firmware, cable, direct connection, correct HDMI input and PS5 video-output settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use the right cable. Start with the cable supplied with the PS5, or use a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. Avoid inserting an unverified switch, receiver or capture device while diagnosing.
  2. Connect directly. Run the PS5 straight to the display’s HDMI input. If the signal works directly but fails through an audio receiver or switch, that intermediate device may not pass the required mode.
  3. Select the high-bandwidth input. Use the specific HDMI port identified by the display manual for 4K/120 Hz or other advanced signals. Ports are not necessarily equivalent.
  4. Update display firmware. Install the manufacturer’s current firmware, then restart both the display and console. Firmware can affect compatibility and handshaking.
  5. Inspect PS5 video settings. In the PS5 settings, review the video-output pages for resolution, 120 Hz output, VRR, HDR and 1440p options. The console exposes options according to the connected device and game, so an unavailable option may indicate a capability or connection limit.
  6. Test one variable at a time. If 4K/120 Hz fails, temporarily select a lower mode, replace the cable, try the documented HDMI input and reconnect directly. Restore your preferred settings after identifying the failing link.

These steps establish whether the console and display are communicating correctly. They still cannot create a GTA VI mode that Rockstar has not announced.

Buying profiles for different players

The shared living-room player

Choose a TV whose size is comfortable from the main sofa, with HDR and the required HDMI input. VRR and 120 Hz are useful extras if you play other compatible titles, but do not sacrifice viewing comfort to obtain a specification GTA VI may not use.

The desk player

Choose a monitor that is comfortable at close range and explicitly supports the console signal through HDMI. Confirm that its advertised refresh rate is available on HDMI rather than only through a computer-oriented connector. Include speakers or a headset in the desk plan if the monitor has limited audio features.

The mixed-use household

Prioritize the exact combination of devices you will connect: console, computer, streaming hardware and any receiver or switch. Count the required HDMI ports, then verify that the port used by the console supports the desired mode. A display that is excellent for one source can be inconvenient if every other device must be unplugged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The long-term upgrader

A 4K/120 Hz display with VRR gives you broader compatibility for future games and devices. Treat that as flexibility, not a forecast of GTA VI’s frame rate. Keep the model’s firmware support and port layout in your decision because those details affect how long the feature set remains useful.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying from a rumor. No cited official source confirms GTA VI resolution, frame rate, HDR or VRR behavior.
  • Assuming HDMI 2.1 means every feature. ALLM, VRR and 4K/120 Hz support must each be verified for the exact model and port.
  • Confusing console capability with game output. PS5 can output 4K at 120 Hz in supported circumstances; that does not make every game a 120-fps title.
  • Using the wrong HDMI input. A display can have different limits on different ports.
  • Ignoring the cable and signal path. The supplied PS5 cable, a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable and a direct connection remove common variables during setup.
  • Choosing size without measuring distance. A screen that looks impressive in a showroom may be uncomfortable at your actual seat.
  • Treating one input-lag number as universal. Test conditions, picture mode, model and environment all affect measurements.

What to monitor before GTA VI launches

Before November 19, 2026, recheck Rockstar’s current platform and release information and look for an official statement about GTA VI’s display modes. If Rockstar publishes resolution, frame-rate, HDR or VRR details, compare them with the specifications of the exact display and HDMI input you plan to use. Until then, the safest purchase is a screen that is comfortable in your room, works correctly with your console today and offers optional features—such as 4K/120 Hz, VRR, HDR and ALLM—only when they match your broader needs.
