The best TV for offline viewing is not simply the one with a USB socket or a “4K” badge. Choose a model whose manual lists the container, video and audio codecs, subtitle formats, resolution limits, file systems, drive capacities and USB power requirements that match the files you already own. Treat downloaded titles inside streaming apps as a separate question: TV support for USB files does not prove that a particular app allows downloads on that television, in your country or on your account.
Define what “offline viewing” means in your setup
People use offline viewing to describe two different workflows. Decide which one you need before comparing televisions, because the requirements and evidence are different.
Playing files from your own storage
In this workflow, films, recordings, photos or music are stored on a USB flash drive or external USB hard disk. You plug the drive into the TV, open its media player and select a file. This is local playback; it does not require an internet connection after the files have been copied.
USB playback is a model-specific feature. A television can have a USB port for software updates, service functions or charging without offering a useful video player. Even when a media player is included, the supported containers, codecs, subtitles, resolutions and file systems vary.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Downloading titles inside a streaming app
Some phone and tablet apps let subscribers download titles for later viewing. That permission does not automatically extend to the TV version of the app. Availability can depend on the service, TV operating system, model, software version, subscription and region. The manufacturer guidance considered for this guide does not establish a universal list of TV apps that permit downloads. Confirm the specific service’s help page and the exact TV model before buying for this purpose.
A TV that cannot store app downloads may still stream the same service when connected to the internet. Conversely, a TV with excellent USB playback may have no downloadable-app feature at all.
Begin with the files you actually want to watch
Do not shop from a brand-level promise such as “plays video from USB.” Build a small inventory of representative files first. Include an ordinary file, the largest or highest-resolution file, a file with subtitles, and one with the audio track you care about. For each item, record:

- Filename extension and container (for example, the format represented by an
.mp4or.mkvfilename). - Video codec and, where shown, profile, level, bit rate and frame rate.
- Audio codec, number of channels and whether the track is a format such as DTS.
- Subtitle format, language and whether subtitles are embedded or separate.
- Resolution and any unusual features such as HDR, interlacing or variable frame rate.
- File size and the file system on the drive that currently holds it.
Operating-system file properties, a media-information utility on your computer or the software that created the recording can reveal these details. If you cannot identify a file’s codecs, note that uncertainty rather than assuming the extension tells the whole story.
Keep the inventory with you while reading a TV’s manual. A filename extension identifies a container, not every stream inside it. Two files ending in the same extension can use different video, audio or subtitle codecs and behave differently on the same television.
Read the exact model manual, not just the product page
Manufacturers publish format tables in model-specific help guides. Search the manual for “USB,” “media player,” “video playback,” “supported files” and “file system.” Record the limits in a comparison sheet. The following checks matter more than the number of USB ports.

| What to compare | Question to answer in the manual | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Media player | Does this exact model open video, audio and photo files from USB, or is the port intended for another function? | Without a playback application, a compatible file still cannot be opened from the TV interface. |
| Container | Are the containers used by your files listed? | The container carries the streams and metadata; a listed extension alone does not guarantee successful playback. |
| Video codec | Are your codec, profile, level, frame rate and resolution within the stated limits? | A TV can reject a file even when its container is listed. |
| Audio codec | Is the audio format supported, and are there channel or pass-through restrictions? | You may see a picture with silence, an error, or an unsupported-audio warning. |
| Subtitles | Are your subtitle formats, character sets, languages and external sidecar files supported? | Video can play while subtitles fail to appear or display incorrectly. |
| Resolution and rate | What maximum resolution, frame rate and bit rate are documented? | “4K TV” describes the panel, not every file the built-in player can decode. |
| File system | Does the TV read the file system on your drive? | An otherwise compatible file is invisible when the drive cannot be mounted. |
| Capacity and power | Are there limits for flash drives, hard disks, partitions or USB current? | A large or power-hungry disk may not mount reliably even when a small flash drive works. |
| Software and region | Does the note apply to your operating-system version, region and firmware? | Support tables and app behavior can change between model variants and software versions. |
LG states that file extensions and codecs can vary by model and that codec specifications must match the TV’s requirements for USB video playback. Sony gives the same practical warning in its BRAVIA Help Guide: “Depending on the file, playback may not be possible, even when using the supported formats.” Treat that sentence as a buying rule: the table is a compatibility target, not a guarantee that every file with a matching label will decode.
Understand storage and USB limits
File-system support is not universal
LG’s general USB guidance recommends FAT32 or NTFS. Sony’s support summary says most BRAVIA models support FAT16, FAT32 and exFAT, while newer models (identified on that page as 2013 onward) support FAT16, FAT32, exFAT and NTFS. These statements describe the manufacturers’ guidance, not a cross-brand standard. Use the exact model’s manual as the authority.
Formatting a drive erases its contents. Copy the files elsewhere first, format the drive on a computer only after confirming the TV’s accepted file system, then copy the media back. If the TV does not recognize the drive, test a small, freshly formatted drive before changing codecs; this separates a mounting problem from a playback problem.

Capacity and power recommendations
LG’s general instructions suggest a USB memory device of 32 GB or less and an external hard disk of 2 TB or less, with a 5 V / 500 mA-or-less drive rating. Those are LG recommendations for the guidance cited, not limits that every television follows. A model manual may specify a different maximum, partition rule or current limit.
Mechanical USB hard disks can draw more power during startup than a TV port supplies. TCL’s Roku TV instructions note that some USB hard drives need their own external power adapter. If a disk repeatedly disconnects, clicks, spins up and disappears, or never appears in the media player, use the manufacturer’s powered adapter or a lower-power drive that the TV explicitly supports. Do not assume a powered USB hub will be accepted unless the manual says so.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRemove storage safely
LG advises ejecting USB storage through the TV before disconnecting it. Follow the on-screen eject command, wait for confirmation, then unplug the drive. Removing it while the TV is reading or writing can cause file-system errors and may corrupt the index or media files. Keep a second copy of irreplaceable recordings; a TV is not a backup system.

Compare candidate TVs on the right axes
When two models appear similar, compare them line by line against your file inventory.
| Decision axis | Evidence to collect | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in local playback | Exact model manual names a USB media player and lists the media categories you need. | The sales page mentions USB but the manual describes only charging, updates or photos. |
| Codec coverage | Every representative file’s container, video codec, audio codec, subtitles and resolution fit the table. | Only extensions are listed, or audio and subtitle limits are omitted. |
| Drive compatibility | Your chosen file system, capacity and power demand are within the documented limits. | The manual says “USB storage” without specifying file systems or power. |
| Interface and navigation | The TV can browse folders, resume files and select subtitle or audio tracks in a way you can use. | Only a generic file browser is described, with no media-player controls. |
| Fallback route | A laptop or separate player can connect over HDMI and decode your files when necessary. | You are relying on HDMI to fix an unknown codec or audio problem without testing the source device. |
| App-download requirement | The streaming service confirms downloads on this TV platform, model family and region. | You are inferring offline-app support from the existence of USB playback or an app icon. |
Do not select a model solely because it has a higher panel resolution, more HDMI sockets or a larger advertised storage number. Those features do not expand the built-in decoder’s format list.
Use this buying procedure
- Write the use case. State whether you need USB files, app downloads, or both. Note whether the TV will ever be disconnected from the internet.
- Inventory real media. Capture the container, video codec, audio codec, subtitle type, resolution and file size for representative files.
- Shortlist exact model numbers. Include the region and screen size; a family name can cover variants with different software or format tables.
- Download each manual. Use the model’s support page, not a retailer’s generic specification panel. Search for the USB and supported-file sections.
- Mark every requirement. In a table, label each file as supported, unsupported or not stated for container, video, audio, subtitles and resolution. Treat “not stated” as unresolved rather than supported.
- Check storage rules. Confirm file system, capacity, partition and USB-current requirements. Compare them with the drive you intend to use.
- Verify app downloads separately. Read the streaming service’s current device and download rules for your region and subscription. Ask the retailer or manufacturer about the exact model only when the service documentation is unclear.
- Plan a fallback. If any file is uncertain, decide whether a laptop or external player over HDMI is acceptable and whether that device can decode the audio and subtitles.
- Test before committing when possible. Use a small copy of your representative files on a correctly formatted drive. Test the most demanding file, subtitles, alternate audio tracks, seeking and resume behavior.
Set up USB playback after purchase
- Back up the drive, then format it with a file system the model manual lists. Confirm the format before copying media because formatting deletes existing data.
- Copy a few representative files first, rather than filling the drive immediately. Keep filenames simple and preserve the original folder structure so you can identify a failed file.
- Connect the drive directly to the TV’s documented media USB port. If it is an external hard disk, connect its specified power adapter before opening the TV’s media application.
- Open the TV’s media player and select the USB device. TCL Roku TV instructions describe selecting the USB device and then the file in Roku Media Player; other interfaces use different labels and menus.
- Play the test files one at a time. Check picture, audio, subtitles, alternate tracks, seeking and whether the TV reports an unsupported codec.
- Use the TV’s eject or safely-remove command before unplugging the drive. If the TV reports an error, stop copying new files until the drive has been checked on a computer.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The USB drive does not appear
- Confirm the port supports media playback and that the drive receives power.
- Check the file system against the exact model manual. A drive formatted with an unlisted file system may be invisible.
- Try a smaller flash drive. If it works while the hard disk does not, investigate capacity, partitioning and external power.
- Reconnect the drive after fully powering the TV off and on, then open the media player again.
The drive appears but a file is missing
- Check whether the TV hides unsupported extensions or folders.
- Verify that the file was copied completely and opens on a computer.
- Move one test file to the drive’s top level. If it appears there but not in a deep folder, the model may have a path, filename or indexing limitation.
Video plays with no sound
- Compare the audio codec and channel layout with the manual; a supported container does not prove that its audio stream is supported.
- Try another audio track if the file contains one.
- Use a laptop or separate player that can decode the track and send already-decoded audio over HDMI. This is a fallback, not a promise that HDMI accepts every source format.
Sound plays but subtitles do not
- Check the subtitle format, filename relationship and character encoding.
- Confirm subtitles are enabled in the TV’s playback controls and that the language track is selected.
- Test an embedded subtitle and a separate subtitle file independently; failure of one does not prove the other is unsupported.
A file starts, freezes or shows an error
- Compare its resolution, frame rate, profile, level and bit rate with the model’s limits.
- Test a lower-complexity copy to determine whether the problem is decoding load rather than the drive.
- Remember Sony’s qualification that playback may fail even when a format is listed. A matching extension is not evidence that every encoding variant works.
When an HDMI source is the better solution
A laptop or dedicated media player connected by HDMI moves decoding away from the television. This can be useful when your files change often, when the TV’s app is awkward, or when the TV lacks a required codec. The source device must still read the drive, decode the video and audio, render subtitles and output a signal the TV accepts. HDMI therefore provides a different playback path, not a universal codec converter.
Recommended Free Tools
LG documentation identifies DTS support through USB or HDMI in its guide, but that statement still belongs to the relevant model and connection path. Confirm whether the source decodes the track itself or expects an amplifier or TV to decode it. Test the complete chain—file, player software, HDMI output, TV and audio equipment—before depending on it for offline playback.
Make the choice by use case
| Your priority | What to prioritize | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| A small library on a flash drive | A straightforward USB media player and the correct file system. | Flash-drive capacity guidance, supported containers and your most common audio and subtitle formats. |
| Large local library on a hard disk | Documented disk capacity, USB power and folder navigation. | Whether the disk needs its own adapter, partition limits and safe-eject behavior. |
| Mixed or unusual codecs | A television with a confirmed match for every file, or a tested HDMI playback device. | Video, audio, subtitle and resolution tables; do not rely on extensions. |
| Travel or unreliable internet | USB playback you can test without a network. | That local files open after setup and that app-download requirements are not being assumed. |
| Streaming downloads | The service’s supported TV platform and download policy. | Model, operating-system version, region, subscription tier, storage behavior and expiration rules as documented by the service. |
| One simple setup for everything | A tested combination of TV, drive and optional HDMI source. | Run the same representative files and the intended app workflow before returning the old equipment. |
Common buying mistakes
- Equating USB with video playback: Verify that the exact port and model include a media player.
- Choosing by extension: Match container, video codec, audio codec, subtitles and resolution together.
- Treating “4K” as a decoder specification: A high-resolution panel may still reject a high-bitrate or differently encoded file.
- Assuming another model in the same series behaves identically: Compare the model number and regional manual.
- Ignoring power: A hard disk that exceeds the TV’s USB power capability can disconnect or fail to mount.
- Pulling the drive out immediately: Use the TV’s eject command to reduce file-system errors.
- Assuming an app can download because it can stream: Check the service’s download policy for TVs, not phones or tablets.
- Buying before testing: A short test with your own files reveals more than a generic compatibility badge.
Final checklist
- I know whether my requirement is USB files, streaming-app downloads or both.
- I recorded the container, video codec, audio codec, subtitles and resolution of representative files.
- The exact model manual lists a USB media player and matches those requirements.
- The drive’s file system, capacity, partitioning and power needs fit the model’s guidance.
- I understand that LG’s 32 GB flash-drive, 2 TB hard-disk and 5 V / 500 mA recommendations are model guidance, not universal standards.
- I have confirmed the streaming service’s TV-download policy separately, including region and subscription conditions.
- I have a tested HDMI fallback if any file or audio track is uncertain.
- I will eject USB storage through the TV before disconnecting it.
The defensible choice is the television whose own documentation matches your real files and storage—not the model with the most impressive port count or panel specification. If the manual leaves a codec, file system or app-download question unanswered, treat it as an unresolved risk and test the complete setup or choose a playback device with documented support.
