The right gaming TV is defined by the signal it can accept from your console or PC—not by a “120” badge or an HDMI 2.1 label alone. Start with the exact HDMI input’s supported resolution and refresh rate, then verify VRR, ALLM, firmware, cable, and every device between the source and screen.

A 4K 120Hz input can display compatible high-frame-rate output, while VRR can synchronize the panel’s timing with uneven frame delivery. Neither feature makes every game run at 120 frames per second, removes all stutter, or works automatically on every port. Use the checks below before buying or troubleshooting.

What matters most when choosing a gaming TV

Prioritize the features in this order:

  1. Supported format on the exact HDMI input: Confirm that the port you will use accepts your target resolution and refresh rate, such as 4K at 120Hz.
  2. VRR compatibility: Check that the TV and source support variable refresh rate and, when documented, the operating range.
  3. Low-latency features: ALLM can switch the TV into a game-optimized mode automatically. It is separate from refresh rate and VRR.
  4. Signal-chain limits: Check the source settings, firmware, cable, receiver or soundbar, and any switch before assuming the panel is faulty.

Compare the manufacturer’s manual or specification sheet for the exact model and port. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s current overview identifies HDMI 2.2 as the latest specification update, while HDMI 2.1b documentation describes gaming features including VRR, ALLM, and QFT. A version name is therefore a starting point, not a complete compatibility guarantee.

Refresh rate and 4K 120Hz explained

What refresh rate means

Refresh rate is how often a display can update its image, measured in hertz (Hz). A 60Hz display refreshes up to 60 times per second; a 120Hz display can refresh up to 120 times per second when it receives a compatible signal.

Higher refresh can make camera movement and aiming feel smoother, but only when the console or PC, the game, and the TV input all support the same mode. HDMI Licensing Administrator lists 4K120 among HDMI high-resolution/high-refresh capabilities. Sony documents 4K 120Hz video output for PS5, while its console guidance refers to 120Hz output for games that support it: PS5 resolution support.

Why “120” marketing claims can mislead

Some televisions advertise motion-processing numbers that are not the same as accepting a native 120Hz input. A genuine gaming specification should state the input format, for example “4K at 120Hz,” and identify the HDMI port that supports it. Do not infer that every game renders at 120 frames per second. A title may target 30, 60, or another frame rate, or offer a separate performance mode.

Matching the source to the display

For 4K120, all of these must line up:

  • The game must provide a mode capable of outputting the selected resolution and refresh rate.
  • The console or PC must be configured to output that format.
  • The TV’s chosen HDMI input must accept it.
  • The cable and any intermediary device must carry the signal without reducing it to a lower mode.

If one link is limited to 4K60, the system will negotiate a lower format even if the television panel itself is capable of 120Hz.

VRR: what it does and what it cannot do

Why fixed refresh can produce tearing or judder

A game does not always finish each frame in the same amount of time. HDMI Licensing Administrator explains that rendering time changes with scene complexity, GPU capability, resolution, and frame rate. If a display refreshes on a fixed schedule while frames arrive at different times, the screen can repeat a frame, wait for the next one, or show parts of two frames. Those timing mismatches can appear as judder or tearing.

How variable refresh rate works

VRR lets the display vary its refresh timing to follow frame delivery instead of refreshing at one unchanging interval. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes it this way: “VRR enables a gaming source such as a console or computer to deliver video frames as fast as it can, which in many cases is slower than the normal static refresh rate.” Read the full technical explanation at HDMI Variable Refresh Rate (VRR).

  • Dolby Atmos Audio: Advanced spatial audio processing can be found in movies, TV shows, and video games.

VRR can make an uneven frame rate look smoother and reduce tearing, but it does not create extra frames or guarantee a fixed frame rate. Sony notes that PS5 can synchronize display refresh with console output on HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and monitors, and that results vary by TV and game: PS5 features.

What to verify before relying on VRR

  • Whether the TV supports VRR on the input you will use.
  • Whether the console or PC supports the TV’s VRR implementation.
  • The documented VRR range, if the manufacturer publishes one.
  • Whether enabling VRR changes other modes, such as resolution, local-dimming behavior, or picture controls.
  • Whether the particular game supports a variable-frame-rate mode.

HDMI 2.1: read the port specification, not just the label

“HDMI 2.1” does not automatically mean that every port on a TV accepts every HDMI 2.1 feature. Manufacturers can provide different capabilities on different inputs, and a television may support 4K120, VRR, ALLM, or other functions only under particular combinations of resolution, color format, and settings.

Use the model’s official specification sheet and manual to answer these questions:

  • Which numbered HDMI input supports 4K at 120Hz?
  • Which input supports VRR and ALLM?
  • Are those features available simultaneously?
  • Does enabling an “enhanced,” “deep color,” or similar input mode unlock the advertised bandwidth?
  • Does the TV require a current firmware version?
  • Will an AV receiver, soundbar, capture card, switch, or adapter in the path pass the same signal?

HDMI Licensing Administrator’s HDMI 2.2 Specification Overview and HDMI 2.1b Specification explain the standards and features. They do not identify the capabilities of a particular television model, so model-level documentation remains essential.

ALLM and QFT: useful, but different from refresh rate

ALLM

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) is a signal from a console or PC that asks a compatible display to switch to a low-latency picture mode. It can avoid manually selecting Game Mode every time you start playing. ALLM does not increase refresh rate and does not perform the same function as VRR.

QFT

Quick Frame Transport (QFT) reduces the time spent transporting active video data across the link, which can reduce transport-related display latency when the source and display support it. QFT addresses the signal’s transport time; it does not make a game render faster and does not replace checking the TV’s supported input modes. HDMI Licensing Administrator discusses these gaming features in its HDMI 2.2 overview: HDMI specification overview.

How to check a TV before buying

Use the exact model and port number

Do not stop at a product family name or a retailer headline. Download the manual or specification sheet for the exact regional model. Find the HDMI input table and record the port number that supports your intended mode. If the document says only “up to 120Hz” without identifying the input or resolution, treat that as incomplete information and seek a more precise table.

Run this buyer checklist

  1. Write down your source: console model or PC graphics hardware, target resolution, and the games or modes you expect to use.
  2. Check 4K120 support: Ask, “Does the TV claim to support 4K at 120Hz?” Confirm that the claim applies to an HDMI input, not merely internal panel processing.
  3. Identify the port: Note the numbered HDMI socket and whether a setting must be enabled for enhanced bandwidth.
  4. Check VRR: Verify compatibility and the documented operating range, if available.
  5. Check ALLM: Confirm that the TV can switch to its low-latency mode automatically with your source.
  6. Inspect the signal path: Include receivers, soundbars, switches, adapters, and capture devices—not just the TV and console.
  7. Check firmware: Read the manufacturer’s update notes and install the current firmware before judging compatibility.
  8. Confirm cable requirements: Use the cable supplied with the console when it is suitable, or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when the required mode calls for it.

Setting up a PS5 for 4K120 and VRR

Sony’s troubleshooting guidance is a practical sequence for a PS5 connection. The labels can vary slightly by TV brand, but the compatibility questions remain the same.

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV’s HDMI input identified for 4K120 or HDMI 2.1 gaming.
  2. On the TV, enable the input’s enhanced or high-bandwidth mode if the manual requires it.
  3. On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  4. Check the displayed resolution and 120Hz output information. Set the appropriate resolution and enable 120Hz output for supported games.
  5. In the same area, review the VRR option and enable it if both devices support it.
  6. Update the TV and PS5 firmware, then restart both devices.
  7. Test a game that explicitly offers a 120Hz or VRR mode; do not use a 60fps-only title as proof that the connection is failing.

Sony’s full instructions are at How to change PS5 console resolution. Sony recommends the cable supplied with PS5 or an Ultra High Speed cable rated for 4K120 when troubleshooting. A replacement is not required if the supplied cable works correctly.

PC considerations

A PC adds more variables than a console. The graphics card must generate the chosen resolution and refresh rate, the driver must expose the appropriate display mode, and the TV input must accept the resulting timing. If the PC is connected through a receiver, dock, adapter, or switch, each device must pass the same format.

Set the desired resolution and refresh rate in the operating system or graphics-control panel, then enable VRR in the display and graphics settings when supported. Test with a game that can vary its frame rate. If VRR engages only within a documented range, frame rates outside that range may behave differently; consult the TV and GPU documentation rather than assuming VRR is active everywhere.

Troubleshooting a missing 4K120 or VRR signal

The TV reports 4K60 instead of 4K120

  • Recheck that the cable is connected to the TV’s specified 4K120 input.
  • Enable the TV’s enhanced-input or high-bandwidth setting.
  • Remove a receiver, soundbar, switch, or adapter temporarily and connect the source directly to the TV.
  • Update the TV and source firmware.
  • Use the supplied console cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for the required format.
  • Confirm that the game and source are actually set to a 120Hz-capable mode.

VRR is unavailable or unstable

  • Confirm VRR is supported on that exact HDMI port, not just elsewhere on the TV.
  • Check that VRR is enabled on both the source and TV.
  • Test another game or graphics mode; support can vary by title.
  • Check the manufacturer’s documented VRR range and any firmware notes.
  • Bypass intermediary equipment to identify which link is limiting the feature.

Input feels delayed

Ensure Game Mode or the TV’s low-latency mode is active. If the source supports ALLM, verify that the TV receives and honors the signal. QFT can reduce transport time only when the complete HDMI chain supports it; neither feature compensates for a game’s own rendering delay.

Comparing two televisions without a model ranking

When two exact models appear similar, compare the same input and mode rather than relying on a shared HDMI version label.

Comparison point What to record Why it matters
Resolution and refresh rate Maximum format on the intended HDMI input, such as 4K at 120Hz Determines whether the source can use its target output
VRR Supported systems and documented range Determines how variable frame delivery is handled
ALLM Whether automatic low-latency switching is supported Reduces manual mode changes
Source compatibility Console or PC requirements and supported game modes A feature is useful only when the source and title can use it
Signal chain Cable, receiver, soundbar, switch, adapter, and firmware requirements Any link can limit the negotiated signal

This feature comparison does not establish panel brightness, contrast, response time, measured input lag, port count, price, or overall value. Those are model-specific questions requiring separate specifications or testing.

What to expect in real games

Use 120Hz as available headroom, not a promise that every title will render at 120fps. A game may choose a higher frame-rate performance mode at reduced visual settings, a higher-resolution mode at a lower frame rate, or no 120Hz mode at all. VRR can smooth changes within the supported range, but it cannot force a game to produce frames faster than the console or PC can render them.

The most dependable purchase is therefore the TV whose exact input, source, game modes, firmware, and cable all support the format you actually intend to use. Treat the panel’s headline refresh number as one line in that compatibility chain, not as the whole decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a 120Hz TV make a 60fps game run at 120fps?

No. The game and source must provide a 120Hz-capable output mode. A 120Hz panel can accept that signal, but it cannot create additional game frames.

Do I need a new HDMI cable for 4K120?

Not automatically. First test the cable supplied with your console. If troubleshooting requires another cable, use one certified Ultra High Speed HDMI and rated for 4K120, then verify the complete signal path.

Is HDMI 2.1 enough to guarantee VRR and 4K120?

No. Check the exact HDMI input, supported resolution and refresh rate, VRR and ALLM support, required TV settings, firmware, and any receiver or switch in the chain.
