Use the app that matches the operator running your train or bus. The official NJ TRANSIT Mobile App is the practical all-in-one choice for NJ TRANSIT bus, rail and light-rail trips: it plans journeys, shows arrivals and departures, delivers service information and sells NJ TRANSIT tickets. RidePATH is the Port Authority’s official app for PATH arrival times, schedules, trip planning and alerts. A journey that uses both networks usually requires both operators’ fare methods: buy an NJ TRANSIT fare in the NJ TRANSIT app, then pay for PATH with PATH’s TAPP contactless system.

There is no verified evidence that one app is universally more accurate, nor that a third-party planner reliably combines both operators’ live data and ticketing. Choose by the services you will ride, then confirm connections, service alerts and payment rules with each operator before leaving.

Start with the operator, not the app-store rating

NJ TRANSIT and PATH are separate rail systems with separate fare products, service notices and official mobile tools. That division determines which app can answer your question and which app can take your payment.

What you need Best official tool What it covers
NJ TRANSIT bus, rail or light rail NJ TRANSIT Mobile App Trip planning, schedules, real-time arrivals and departures, service information, NJ TRANSIT ticket purchase and activation
PATH train RidePATH PATH arrival times, schedules, trip planning, station discovery, maps and PATH alerts
A trip using both systems Use the relevant official app for each operator Plan the connection, check both operators’ alerts and use NJ TRANSIT tickets plus PATH TAPP as applicable

A journey planner can show a route that crosses from one network to the other, but directions do not automatically grant permission to use one operator’s fare on the other. Treat routing and payment as two separate decisions.

When the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App is the right choice

Choose the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App when your trip is wholly or primarily on NJ TRANSIT. NJ TRANSIT says the app plans trips across its bus, rail and light-rail services, displays real-time arrivals and departures, and supports purchasing and activating tickets.

Services and ticket products

The app’s listed fare products include one-way and round-trip tickets, ten-trip options for rail, bus and light rail, weekly rail passes, FLEXPASS and monthly passes. The exact product, route validity and fare can change, so verify the offer shown in the app or current NJ TRANSIT fare information before buying. A product appearing in the app is not evidence that it is valid for PATH.

Browsing without an account

You can plan a trip and view schedules without signing in. This is useful if you are checking a departure before deciding whether to install the app or create an account. An account is required to purchase, store and manage tickets and to use saved favorites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Device and account limitation

NJ TRANSIT says tickets are not transferable across multiple devices under one account. If you replace a phone, use a second phone or travel with another person, plan how the ticket will remain on the purchasing device before you buy. Do not assume that signing in on another device will let you move an active ticket.

Alerts and system information

The app separates personalized and system-wide information. My Transit Alerts sends notifications about service changes for routes or stops you select. System Status gives the broader view of conditions across the NJ TRANSIT network. Set route or stop alerts for a regular commute, but check system status when weather, construction or a major disruption could affect a wider area.

What the app does not pay for

NJ TRANSIT’s official FAQ says the app cannot be used to pay parking fees or Access Link trips. It also does not list PATH fare payment among the NJ TRANSIT ticket products described above.

When RidePATH is the right choice

RidePATH is the Port Authority’s official PATH app. Use it when your train journey is on PATH and you need PATH-specific arrival times, schedules, trip planning or alerts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PATH-focused information

The official listing describes nearby PATH station discovery as well as geographic and system maps. Those features help you find the correct station and understand the line before you travel, while arrival information answers the immediate “which train is next?” question.

Why a PATH app matters even when another planner gives directions

A general planner may provide a useful door-to-door itinerary, but RidePATH is the operator-specific place to check a PATH delay, station information or alert. For a time-sensitive connection, compare the itinerary’s PATH leg with RidePATH shortly before departure.

App listing freshness

The official Google Play listing reported an update on June 3, 2026. That is an app-store update date, not a performance rating or proof that every feature will behave identically on your phone. Interfaces and capabilities can change after that date.

How fares work on a trip that uses both systems

The most common mistake on a cross-network trip is assuming that a route shown in one app is also a single mobile fare. Keep these questions separate:

  1. Which operator runs each leg? Identify whether each train or bus is NJ TRANSIT or PATH.
  2. Which fare product covers that leg? An NJ TRANSIT ticket covers the NJ TRANSIT service for which it was purchased, subject to the product’s rules. PATH identifies TAPP as its contactless fare-payment system.
  3. Where will you pay? Buy and activate an NJ TRANSIT ticket in the NJ TRANSIT app. For PATH, use the PATH fare method currently identified by the Port Authority, TAPP, at the relevant PATH access point.

Do not present an NJ TRANSIT mobile ticket as valid for PATH unless a current, authoritative rule explicitly says so. The cited NJ TRANSIT ticket list is for NJ TRANSIT modes, while TAPP is the fare method PATH identifies.

Example: NJ TRANSIT rail to a PATH connection

Plan the entire itinerary so you know where to change, then split the fare work by operator. Purchase the NJ TRANSIT rail ticket in the NJ TRANSIT app and activate it according to the app’s instructions. At the PATH portion, follow station signage and use TAPP as required. Before leaving, check the NJ TRANSIT departure and PATH arrival information separately because a delay on the first operator can make the planned connection impractical.

A step-by-step method for choosing and preparing your apps

1. List every vehicle in the journey

Write down each bus, rail or PATH segment, including the transfer station. A trip that appears to be “one train ride” may involve two operators after a platform or station change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Install only the official app for each operator you will ride

For NJ TRANSIT service, install the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App. For PATH service, install RidePATH. Check the publisher name and operator description in the store so you do not confuse an unofficial timetable app with the operator’s own tool.

3. Test planning before you need a ticket

Search the origin, destination and travel time while you still have a reliable connection. Confirm that the app identifies the correct station, direction and mode. For a mixed trip, repeat the check in the other operator’s app rather than assuming one result contains every live detail.

4. Decide whether you need an NJ TRANSIT account

If you only need schedules, continue without signing in. Create an account before purchase if you need to buy, store or manage NJ TRANSIT tickets or save favorites. Remember that tickets cannot be transferred across multiple devices under one account.

  • Grip records by the edges to avoid fingerprints and smudges
  • Keep records vertically in a cool, dry area away from sunlight
  • Use a soft, anti-static cloth to clean records before and after each play
  • Prevent warping by avoiding stacking records

5. Set the right alerts

For recurring NJ TRANSIT travel, select the routes or stops in My Transit Alerts. On a day with a major event or severe weather, also inspect System Status. For PATH travel, enable the alerts offered by RidePATH. Notifications complement, rather than replace, a final check immediately before departure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Buy the fare for each operator

Purchase and activate the NJ TRANSIT product in the NJ TRANSIT app. For the PATH leg, prepare to use TAPP, PATH’s identified contactless payment system. Keep enough battery power and access to the payment method for the entire trip.

7. Recheck live conditions

Schedules are plans; alerts describe current conditions. Check both official apps shortly before leaving and again if a transfer window is tight. App-store update dates do not guarantee that a particular train will run on time.

Choosing for common traveler situations

You ride only NJ TRANSIT

Use the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App. It combines planning, arrivals and departures, alerts and NJ TRANSIT ticket purchase in one place. An account is optional for schedule research but necessary for ticket management.

You ride only PATH

Use RidePATH for PATH arrivals, schedules, planning and alerts. Keep your PATH fare method separate and follow current station instructions for TAPP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You commute across both systems

Keep both official apps installed. Use a planner to understand the complete connection if needed, then validate the NJ TRANSIT portion in the NJ TRANSIT app and the PATH portion in RidePATH. This two-app setup is less convenient than a single dashboard but makes the operator boundary visible, which reduces fare and alert mistakes.

You are an occasional visitor

If you do not want to create an account just to inspect NJ TRANSIT schedules, use the app’s no-sign-in planning mode. Create an account only when you are ready to purchase or manage NJ TRANSIT tickets. Install RidePATH if the itinerary includes PATH so you can check station-specific information and alerts.

You need one combined map

A third-party planner may be useful for a door-to-door overview, but no reviewed evidence verifies a particular third-party app’s combined real-time accuracy or ticketing support. Use such a planner as a navigation aid, not as proof that one mobile ticket covers both operators.

Troubleshooting before and during travel

The app shows a route but no ticket for the whole trip

That is expected when the itinerary crosses operators. Separate the NJ TRANSIT fare from the PATH fare. Check the operator name for every leg and pay each according to its own rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot buy an NJ TRANSIT ticket

Confirm that you are signed in, because NJ TRANSIT requires an account to purchase, store and manage tickets. Check that the product and origin-destination selection match the service you intend to board. If the phone you are using differs from the one associated with an active ticket, do not assume the ticket can be moved between devices.

You need a broad disruption update

Use NJ TRANSIT System Status rather than relying only on a personalized route alert. For PATH, open RidePATH’s alert information. A saved route may not represent a disruption elsewhere that affects your transfer.

Arrival times conflict between apps

First verify that both screens refer to the same operator, station entrance, direction and date. A general itinerary can be static while the operator’s own arrival board reflects a newer condition. There is no established independent benchmark proving one official app is always more accurate, so use the operator responsible for that leg as the final operational reference.

Your phone battery or connection is low

Open the itinerary and ticket before entering a station, keep the device charged and retain a backup record of the departure, station and transfer. Payment and inspection procedures may require the phone or contactless method to work at the moment you travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

Official descriptions establish each app’s intended functions and operator scope. They do not establish comparative accuracy, uptime, customer satisfaction or a universally best combined planner. No named statistic about comparative app performance or user outcomes is available here, and no official person’s statement endorses one app over the other.

The Google Play dates—June 3, 2026 for RidePATH and September 2, 2026 for NJ TRANSIT—indicate when those listings reported updates. They are not independent tests. Because interfaces, fares, schedules and payment rules can change, check the current operator pages and app listings before an important journey and use live alerts for the specific trip.

Decision checklist

  • My itinerary identifies every NJ TRANSIT and PATH segment.
  • I installed the official app for each operator I will use.
  • I know whether I need an NJ TRANSIT account for ticket purchase or only schedule browsing.
  • I bought and activated the NJ TRANSIT fare, if applicable.
  • I have a PATH TAPP payment method ready for the PATH leg, if applicable.
  • I checked personalized alerts and the broader system status where relevant.
  • I verified the final departure, station, direction and transfer shortly before leaving.
  • I understand that app routing does not automatically make one operator’s fare valid on another operator.
