There is no single US-and-Europe price that makes one transactional SMS provider directly comparable with another. SMS rates depend on the destination country—and sometimes the carrier—as well as the message’s billing unit, sender type, carrier charges, number costs, registration, and volume tier. Use the US figures below as limited benchmarks, then price each European destination separately using the provider’s current selector, rate sheet, dashboard, or quote.
What the published prices do—and do not—compare
SMS APIs may charge by segment, message part, or message, and their published sending rate may exclude carrier passthrough, phone-number charges, taxes, setup, or registration. A useful comparison therefore separates the provider’s rate from other charges rather than treating a headline rate as an all-in cost.
The rates below are provider-published information from pricing materials accessed in 2026. They are not a same-day quote or an independent price test. Prices can change; confirm the current amount, currency, destination, and billing unit before budgeting or purchase.

| Provider or product | Published rate or pricing model | Important additional costs or qualifications | What to check for Europe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twilio | US outbound and inbound SMS: $0.0083 per 160-character segment for long codes, toll-free numbers, and short codes, according to Twilio’s US pricing page accessed in 2026. | Carrier fees vary by destination and mobile network operator; phone-number charges are additional. A2P 10DLC onboarding fees apply where relevant. Twilio also lists a $0.001 processing fee for a message ending in Failed status. The listed segment rate is not an all-in message cost. | Do not extrapolate the US rate. Obtain country- and, where applicable, carrier-specific rates and include the sender and carrier charges. |
| Telnyx | Outbound and inbound SMS: $0.004 per message part plus carrier fee, according to its pricing page accessed in 2026. | Number charges, carrier passthrough, and taxes vary by destination. The provider’s published one-million-US-part example is an example, not a universal carrier-fee rate. Automatic outbound price tiers begin above 100 million monthly messages. | Request or look up destination-specific carrier passthrough and number costs; keep the API rate and carrier fee as separate line items. |
| Vonage SMS and Messages API | Country-selectable pricing and a global rate sheet are available. The Messages API describes per-message, tiered rates that vary by country. | Platform fees may be added to carrier or provider fees; channel or country setup fees may also apply. The pricing materials do not provide stable numeric rates for a comparable US-and-Europe set here. Vonage says pricing is periodically updated and recommends checking the customer dashboard at purchase. | Use the live country selector or rate sheet for each destination, then record the date, currency, unit, tier, and applicable platform or setup fees. |
| Amazon SNS / AWS End User Messaging SMS | Pay-as-you-go pricing varies by destination country and, in some cases, carrier. AWS supports messaging in more than 200 countries; it directs users to daily usage reports for exact per-message USD charges after sending. | AWS says displayed prices are guidance and change frequently. Depending on the destination, a dedicated origination identity may be required. AWS lists a $2 monthly lease price for a US SMS-enabled toll-free number; other origination resources have separate terms. | Look up each target destination and confirm identity requirements and charges. Do not treat the US toll-free lease as a Europe-wide number price. |
| Sinch Engage | Subscription tiers include SMS credits, with additional-credit prices. The available pricing information does not establish a directly comparable API rate for the same US and European traffic profile. | For Sinch Engage accounts outside the US and Canada, including the UK and Europe, the product says standard SMS does not incur carrier passthrough fees. This statement is specific to Sinch Engage, not every Sinch service. Its sender options include local long codes outside the US and alphanumeric sender IDs in select markets. | Compare plan fee, included credits, additional-credit price, and available sender type for each market. The product describes alphanumeric sender IDs in the UK, France, and Spain; confirm availability and conditions for the intended account and use. |
AWS summarizes the geographic pricing issue this way: “The price for sending SMS messages varies between countries, regions, and in some cases, between carriers in the same country or region based on the telecom carrier of the destination phone number.” That is why a US starting rate cannot stand in for a European estimate.

How to build an apples-to-apples estimate
Use the same message, traffic pattern, and target destinations for every provider. Build one cost row per country, and add carrier rows where a provider prices differently by network.
- Define the traffic. Record the alert text, expected monthly sends, peak pattern, and whether you need outbound messages, inbound replies, or both.
- Set the destinations and sender identity. List each country and, if required by the rate card, carrier. Specify the intended sender type—such as a local number, toll-free number, short code, or alphanumeric sender ID—rather than assuming the same identity works everywhere.
- Normalize the billing unit. Determine whether the quoted rate is per message, segment, or part. Use the same sample text and encoding assumptions in each provider’s calculator or quote. A 160-character segment price, for example, is not automatically the price of every alert: the message may be billed as multiple segments.
- Add charges beyond message volume. Include carrier passthrough, platform fees, number leases, registration or onboarding, setup, provisioning, and applicable taxes. Keep each separate so an excluded fee does not disappear inside an apparently low API rate.
- Apply the actual volume terms. Record the relevant tier, any commitment, subscription fee, included credits, and additional-credit rate. Do not apply an example blended fee or a high-volume tier to a different traffic level.
- Save the quote context. For each number, preserve the provider page or quote date, destination, currency, direction, message unit, sender type, volume assumption, and exclusions. Recheck volatile rates before committing.
A practical monthly estimate is the sum of message-volume charges for each destination, plus carrier and platform charges, number and sender costs, setup or registration fees, subscription fees, and taxes. If a provider does not expose a stable destination price publicly, mark it as awaiting a provider quote rather than substituting a US rate or a neighboring country’s rate.

How the providers differ in pricing shape
Per-use rates versus included credits
Twilio, Telnyx, Vonage, and AWS present usage-based or destination-priced models in the cited materials, although their billing units and add-on fees differ. Sinch Engage instead presents subscription tiers with included SMS credits and prices for additional credits. Keep these models distinct: compare a subscription plan’s monthly fee and credit allowance against the expected usage, not just against another provider’s per-part or per-segment rate.
Message units are not interchangeable
Twilio’s cited US rate is per 160-character segment; Telnyx describes its rate per message part. A single alert can consume more than one billable unit depending on its length and encoding. Compare the same payload under each provider’s counting rules, not just the displayed unit prices.

Sender identity is part of the estimate
A sender option can carry its own lease, setup, registration, or availability requirements. AWS notes that dedicated origination identities may be required depending on destination. It lists a $2 monthly lease price for a US SMS-enabled toll-free number. Sinch Engage describes local long codes outside the US and alphanumeric sender IDs in select markets, including the UK, France, and Spain. These are product- and market-specific details, not a guarantee that a particular identity is available for every account or message type.
What to verify before choosing a provider
- Country and carrier coverage: Confirm every destination independently; a regional label such as “Europe” is not a price.
- Direction and transaction type: Check outbound versus inbound rates and whether the message is categorized as transactional or promotional where the product distinguishes them.
- True billed quantity: Verify the unit and segment/part calculation for the sample alert.
- All-in charges: Ask whether carrier passthrough, platform fees, numbers, registration, setup, and taxes are included or additional.
- Sender permissions and requirements: Confirm supported sender types and any dedicated identity or registration requirement for each country.
- Commercial assumptions: Check the account’s volume tier, minimum commitment, included credits, and validity of any quote.
- Price freshness: Save the pricing date and reconfirm it before purchase; AWS calls its displayed prices guidance that changes frequently, and Vonage says its pricing is periodically updated.
Choosing a shortlist for your traffic
Start with the structure that matches your buying model, then validate the same destination set and usage assumptions across candidates.

- USB Port Interface
- Control via AT Commands
- Support Dual Frequencies: GSM/GPRS 900/1800MHz
- For a US benchmark: Twilio and Telnyx publish useful base-rate figures, but neither cited figure includes every charge needed for a final cost. Use the segment or part unit and add the applicable carrier and number costs.
- For country-by-country price discovery: Vonage provides a country selector and global sheet; AWS directs buyers to destination pricing and usage reporting. Confirm actual amounts in the live pricing surfaces rather than relying on a static US number.
- For a subscription-and-credits model: Evaluate Sinch Engage by total plan cost and included/additional credits, while confirming the product-specific country and sender conditions.
These pricing materials do not establish a universal Europe-wide rate or demonstrate which provider is cheapest for a particular alert workload. That answer depends on the exact countries, carriers, payload size, sender identity, monthly volume, and included fees in your quote.
