Choose a digital thermometer that fits the person’s age and that you can use correctly at its intended measurement site. For a young infant, follow pediatric guidance on rectal readings and urgent fever thresholds. For older children and adults, compare digital multi-use, forehead, and ear thermometers for age suitability, placement, and ease of use. Avoid mercury thermometers and forehead temperature strips.
Start with age and the measurement site
There is no single thermometer or measurement site that is right for everyone. The choice depends first on the person being checked and whether they can cooperate with the method. A reading also needs to be interpreted in light of where it was taken: oral, rectal, ear, forehead, and underarm measurements can differ. Tell a health professional which site you used rather than trying to convert the result with a fixed adjustment.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends digital thermometers for children and explains how age affects the choice. Its HealthyChildren.org page, “How to Take Your Child’s Temperature,” was last updated April 17, 2024. The National Health Service (NHS) gives different practical advice for measuring children under five in the armpit. These are guidance differences, not evidence that the same method is equally reliable in every situation.
| Method | Age and use guidance | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Digital probe, rectal | AAP says rectal readings are the most accurate for infants, especially those under three months. | Use a thermometer dedicated to rectal use and follow its instructions. |
| Digital probe, oral | AAP does not recommend oral measurement for children under four. | Requires cooperation and correct placement; wait 30 minutes after a hot or cold drink before measuring a child. |
| Digital probe, underarm | NHS recommends an electronic thermometer in the armpit for children under five; AAP describes underarm measurement as useful for screening. | AAP calls it the least accurate method among those it discusses. |
| Digital forehead / temporal artery | AAP describes forehead measurement as usable at all ages. | Sunlight and cold exposure can affect some readings; follow the model’s positioning instructions. |
| Digital ear / tympanic | AAP guidance supports use from six months of age. | Not reliable for babies under six months; correct positioning matters, and AAP advises waiting 15 minutes indoors after cold outdoor exposure. |
What to compare before choosing
Start by identifying the person you are most likely to check. A thermometer intended for an older child who can follow directions may not be the right choice for a young infant. If you are buying for a household with several ages, consider whether one method is suitable for each person and whether you can keep any site-specific devices clearly separated. Do not assume that convenience for one family member makes the same method appropriate for another.

Next, consider whether you can reliably position the device and follow its instructions. An oral probe requires cooperation and correct placement. An ear device depends on correct positioning. A forehead device must be scanned or held at the distance and location specified by that model. A digital multi-use probe can be used at different sites depending on the device directions, but that flexibility does not make every site suitable at every age.
Think about the conditions in which you will take a reading, too. Direct sunlight or cold exposure can affect some forehead readings. Cold outdoor exposure may affect an ear reading, so the AAP advises waiting 15 minutes after coming indoors before using an ear thermometer. These considerations matter when a reading is taken soon after someone has been outside. Follow the instructions for the particular model rather than relying on a generic distance, placement, or timing rule.
Finally, distinguish quick screening from a measurement method chosen to assess a possible fever. The AAP describes underarm measurement as useful for screening but less accurate than the other methods it discusses. Forehead strips and pacifier thermometers are also less reliable options for confirming a child’s temperature. If a screening result raises concern, use an appropriate thermometer and method for the person’s age, or contact a health professional for advice.

Digital multi-use thermometers
A digital probe thermometer is often called multi-use because the device may be used orally, rectally, or under the arm, depending on its instructions. It is a category rather than a guarantee that every model supports every site. Check the product directions to confirm how it can be used and which ages its instructions address. Choose a site that matches the person’s age and ability to cooperate, not simply the site that seems most convenient.
For infants, the AAP identifies rectal readings as the most accurate, especially for babies under three months. For oral use, the AAP does not recommend measuring a child’s temperature by mouth until age four. A child needs to cooperate and the probe needs to be placed correctly; if the child has had a hot or cold drink, wait 30 minutes before taking an oral reading. If those requirements cannot be met, choose an age-appropriate alternative rather than treating an unreliable placement as a definitive result.
Underarm measurement is another possible use of an electronic probe. The NHS recommends an electronic thermometer in the armpit for children under five, while the AAP says underarm readings are useful for screening and are the least accurate of the methods it discusses. This difference is worth understanding if you are comparing guidance from the United States and the United Kingdom. Follow the current advice of your local health service and your thermometer’s instructions, and tell a clinician that the reading was taken under the arm.

Multi-use capability also creates a household hygiene and mix-up issue. The AAP advises clearly dedicated oral and rectal thermometers. If you keep both types, label them and store them separately so that a thermometer used rectally is not later used orally. Clean the device before and after use according to its instructions. Do not assume that a probe can be shared between sites or cleaned in a particular way unless the manufacturer’s directions support it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Temporal artery thermometers measure at the forehead. The AAP describes forehead measurement as usable at all ages, which can make it an option to consider when selecting a method for different household members. The actual procedure varies: some models are scanned across a specified area and some non-contact models must be held at a specified distance. Read the instructions for the specific model before relying on it; a generic technique cannot substitute for the maker’s placement directions.
Forehead devices can be convenient, but convenience is not the same as immunity to environmental effects. Direct sunlight and cold conditions after being outdoors can affect some readings. If the person has just come in from cold weather, or the forehead is in direct sunlight, a result may be affected. Follow the device’s guidance on conditions and placement, and if the result conflicts with how the person seems or prompts concern, repeat a measurement using an age-appropriate method or ask a health professional what to do.
Do not confuse an electronic forehead thermometer with a forehead temperature strip. Strips are not a reliable choice for measuring a young child’s temperature. If you want a forehead method, choose a digital device intended for that purpose and use it exactly as directed, rather than treating a strip as an equivalent substitute.
Ear thermometers
Tympanic thermometers take a reading in the ear. AAP guidance supports this method for children six months and older, but says it is not reliable for babies under six months. For a baby younger than six months, choose a method appropriate to that age rather than trying an ear device because it appears quick or easy.

The device instructions explain how to place it, and incorrect positioning can undermine the measurement. AAP also advises waiting 15 minutes after coming indoors from cold outdoor exposure before taking an ear temperature. That pause is particularly relevant if you are checking someone immediately after they return from outside. Clean the thermometer before and after use as directed by its manufacturer.

When comparing ear and forehead models, do not decide only by speed or convenience. Consider age eligibility, how reliably you can follow the placement directions, and whether environmental conditions could affect the reading. Neither method removes the need to report the measurement site to a health professional or to act on urgent infant guidance.
Rectal readings and young infants
Rectal readings are the AAP’s most accurate method for infants, especially those under three months. That accuracy consideration is important because fever in a very young baby has a specific urgent threshold. The AAP says that a baby three months old or younger with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher needs an immediate call to their pediatrician.
Use a thermometer designated for rectal use and follow its instructions. Keep it clearly labeled and separate from an oral thermometer. Do not choose a less suitable site simply because it feels easier if the infant’s clinician has told you to use rectal readings. If you are unsure how to take the measurement safely or interpret it, contact the pediatrician rather than improvising technique or converting a reading from another site.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe AAP’s infant guidance generally uses 100.4°F (38°C) or higher as the fever cutoff for other measurement sites as well, while underarm readings may use a lower cutoff. The site still matters, and the reading should be described accurately. Do not apply a fixed number of degrees to convert an underarm, ear, forehead, or oral result into a rectal equivalent. Tell the clinician the number, the unit, the measurement site, and the baby’s age, and follow their advice.
How to take a reading more reliably
- Check the age and method. Before measuring, confirm that the method is suitable for the person. In particular, do not use oral measurement for a child under four under AAP guidance, or an ear thermometer for a baby under six months.
- Read the device instructions. Models can differ in placement, scanning path, distance, and cleaning directions. Use the thermometer at its intended site and follow the directions for that model rather than guessing.
- Account for relevant conditions. For an oral reading in a child, wait 30 minutes after a hot or cold drink. After cold outdoor exposure, wait 15 minutes indoors before taking an ear reading. Direct sunlight or cold conditions can affect some forehead readings.
- Take the reading at the stated site. Make sure an oral probe is placed correctly, an ear device is positioned as instructed, or a forehead device is scanned or held as directed. If the person cannot cooperate with the chosen method, use an age-appropriate alternative or seek clinical guidance.
- Clean and store the thermometer correctly. Clean it before and after use according to the manufacturer’s directions. Keep oral and rectal thermometers clearly labeled and separate if both are used in the household.
- Record the site along with the result. If you call a health professional, say whether the temperature was taken rectally, orally, under the arm, at the forehead, or in the ear. Do not convert between sites using a made-up fixed adjustment.
These steps support a more useful measurement; they do not replace medical advice. If a result is unexpected, the method or conditions may matter, so explain how it was taken when asking for help. Do not delay an immediate call about a young infant who meets the AAP threshold while trying multiple devices to obtain a preferred number.
Thermometers to avoid
A digital thermometer is the general recommendation in AAP guidance. Avoid mercury thermometers: they can break and expose people to mercury. There is no need to select a mercury device when a digital thermometer is the recommended category for home temperature checks.

Also avoid forehead temperature strips as a way to measure a young child’s temperature. They are less reliable for confirming a fever. Pacifier thermometers are likewise less reliable confirmation tools. If you need to assess a possible fever, select a digital method that fits the person’s age and can be used correctly at its intended site.
Cost, brands, and choosing a model
The guidance supports choosing by thermometer type, age suitability, placement, and correct use; it does not establish that a particular brand or model is more accurate, nor does it provide a price comparison. There is no evidence-based reason here to treat a higher price, a particular retailer, or a commercial endorsement as proof that a device is the right choice. Compare the intended measurement sites and age directions on the product, and make sure the instructions explain placement and cleaning clearly.
If choosing a multi-use model, verify which sites the manufacturer permits and keep separate, labeled devices for oral and rectal use if both are part of your household routine. If choosing an ear or forehead thermometer, check that you can carry out the positioning procedure and understand any environmental cautions. A simple digital device used correctly at an appropriate site is more useful than a feature-rich device used at the wrong age or in the wrong way.
When a reading needs prompt attention
The most specific urgent threshold in the AAP guidance discussed here is for babies three months old or younger: a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher warrants calling the pediatrician immediately. Keep the baby’s age and measurement site attached to that number. Do not wait to see whether a different thermometer gives a lower value before contacting the pediatrician.
For other sites, the AAP’s infant guidance generally uses the same 100.4°F (38°C) or higher fever cutoff, with underarm readings potentially using a lower cutoff. Because sites can produce different values, give the clinician the actual reading and explain how it was measured. Follow current local clinical guidance, particularly if it differs from the general advice described here. This article is general home-measurement guidance, not a substitute for individualized care.

Which thermometer should I use for a baby under three months?
The AAP says rectal readings are the most accurate for infants, especially those under three months. A baby three months old or younger with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher needs an immediate call to their pediatrician. Follow the thermometer instructions and keep a rectal device clearly dedicated to that use.
Can I use an ear thermometer on a baby?
AAP guidance supports ear thermometers for children six months and older. They are not reliable for babies under six months. Correct positioning matters, and after cold outdoor exposure the AAP advises waiting 15 minutes indoors before taking an ear reading.
At what age can a child have an oral temperature taken?
The AAP does not recommend oral temperature measurement for children under four. Oral readings also require cooperation and correct probe placement. For a child, wait 30 minutes after a hot or cold drink before taking an oral reading.

Are underarm thermometers accurate for children?
An electronic underarm measurement is the NHS recommendation for children under five. The AAP describes underarm readings as useful for screening but the least accurate among the methods it discusses. If you report an underarm result, identify the site; do not convert it using a fixed adjustment.
Are forehead thermometers suitable for infants?
The AAP describes digital forehead or temporal artery thermometers as usable at all ages. Follow the model’s instructions for scanning or holding distance. Direct sunlight and cold conditions after being outdoors can affect some forehead readings. Forehead strips are not a reliable substitute for measuring a young child’s temperature.
Should I add or subtract degrees to compare temperature sites?
No. Oral, rectal, ear, forehead, and underarm readings can differ, and the guidance does not support using a made-up fixed conversion. Tell a health professional the reading and the site used so they can interpret it.
How should I clean a thermometer?
Clean the thermometer before and after use according to the instructions for that specific device. If you use separate oral and rectal thermometers, label and store them separately so they are not mixed up.
Are mercury thermometers safe to use at home?
The AAP recommends digital thermometers. Mercury thermometers can break and expose people to mercury, so avoid them.
The Bottom Line
Choose a digital thermometer based on the person’s age, the site you can measure correctly, and the device instructions—not on a claim that one method is best for everyone. Use rectal readings for young infants as directed by pediatric guidance, remember the age limits and technique cautions for oral and ear readings, and report the measurement site rather than converting it. For a baby three months old or younger with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, call the pediatrician immediately.
