Choose a tattoo artist whose portfolio fits the style and placement you want, and verify the studio’s current licensing or inspection status with the relevant local authority. Before booking, ask how the artist prevents contamination, what experience and training they have, what risks and healing to expect, and what written aftercare they provide. Rules differ by location, so there is no single credential or licensing checklist that applies everywhere.

Compare the artist, studio, and consultation

A strong choice is more than an attractive portfolio or a clean-looking waiting room. Evaluate the work, local compliance, hygiene practices, communication, and support together.

What to assess What to look for
Style and portfolio Finished work in the style, scale, and placement you want. Ask to see healed tattoos as well as completed work, and ask how much experience the artist has with similar projects. Queensland Health recommends asking how long the artist has been tattooing and requesting photos of clients’ tattoos. Queensland Health
Local compliance Check whether the premises and, where required, the artist are licensed, registered, or inspected under local rules. Ask where official records can be checked.
Infection control The artist should be able to explain hand hygiene, gloves, sterile needles and instruments, work-surface preparation, and disposal of used items. Observe the setup, not just the studio’s general appearance.
Consultation and health The artist should answer questions clearly, discuss relevant allergies and health concerns, explain risks and likely healing, and give you time to decide.
Aftercare and support Ask for written aftercare instructions and find out how the studio handles follow-up questions or healing concerns. Compare price alongside the work and support; a low quote alone does not establish good value.

Verify credentials and local rules

There is no universally recognised tattooist credential. Requirements depend on where the tattoo is performed, and an artist’s portfolio or private training is not the same thing as a statutory license.

  • England: UK Health Security Agency guidance says there are no legal requirements for professional competence and no nationally recognised or accredited training courses for tattooing and body piercing in England. That does not establish the rules for other parts of the UK. UKHSA guidance, published 5 March 2025
  • Queensland, Australia: Queensland Health advises using a licensed studio and suggests asking about the operator’s infection-control competency. Queensland Health
  • Florida, United States: The Florida Department of Health says both the tattoo artist and the establishment must have a Florida Department of Health license. Florida Department of Health
  • Texas, United States: The Texas Department of State Health Services says a tattoo studio must hold a current department-issued license; licenses are site-specific. Texas DSHS

These are examples, not a complete list of jurisdictions. Check the local health or licensing authority for the rules and current records that apply to the studio’s location. If inspection results are available, ask when the premises was last inspected and how to find the result.

What to ask during a consultation

Use questions like these to get specific, practical answers. Queensland Health advises asking whatever helps you feel informed and comfortable with the decision to get—or not get—a tattoo. Queensland Health

  1. “Is this studio licensed or registered where required? When was it last inspected, and where can I check the result?” Verify the answer with the relevant local authority rather than relying only on a verbal assurance.
  2. “What infection-control training or competency do you have, and how long have you been tattooing?” Ask about experience with the particular style, size, and placement you want.
  3. “How do you prepare the skin and work area, and what happens to reusable equipment between clients?” Ask which items are single-use, how reusable tools are cleaned or sterilised, and how sterile items are handled.
  4. “What do you do if gloves touch a non-clean surface or the procedure is interrupted?” Queensland Health says the artist should wash their hands and put on new disposable gloves before starting and after interruptions where gloves may have been contaminated.
  5. “What risks should I understand, how long might healing take, and what written aftercare will you provide?” Ask the artist to explain the expected care in a way you can follow at home.
  6. “Do you need to know about any allergies, skin irritation, or health conditions?” Toronto Public Health notes that artists should ask about allergies to pigments and materials such as latex or iodine. Toronto Public Health
  7. “Who should I contact if I have a concern while it heals?” Western Australia’s guidance suggests considering studios that offer aftercare service and follow-up visits. Government of Western Australia

What safe tattooing should look like

Public-health guidance describes observable precautions. Look for a clean work area, handwashing, fresh single-use gloves, skin cleaning, sterile needles and other skin-penetrating items, and appropriate cleaning or sterilisation of reusable instruments and work surfaces. Sterile packages should be opened just before use. Queensland Health Toronto Public Health Government of Western Australia Texas DSHS

Ask what the artist does when gloves or equipment may have become contaminated. A studio that will not answer reasonable questions about inspection, instrument handling, or cross-contamination has not given you enough information to make an informed choice. A tidy reception area or polished portfolio cannot, by itself, show how the procedure is carried out.

Understand health risks and aftercare

Tattooing penetrates the skin. Public-health guidance identifies infection—including bloodborne viruses and bacterial or fungal infection—as a risk when infection prevention is inadequate. Allergic reactions are also possible. Tell the artist about relevant allergies or health concerns before the appointment, and ask what complications and healing changes to expect. When to walk away

  • The artist cannot show work relevant to your requested style or discuss experience with similar tattoos.
  • You cannot verify required licensing or registration, or the studio will not explain how to check it.
  • The artist cannot clearly describe sterile-item handling, glove changes, or cleaning and sterilisation practices.
  • Your questions about allergies, risks, healing, or aftercare are dismissed or left unanswered.
  • You feel rushed to decide or pressured to proceed before you are comfortable.

Any one concern may be enough to pause and choose another studio. You do not have to book or continue a consultation if you are not satisfied with the answers.
