Start by deciding what you want to do during a typical play session: make decisions at a relaxed pace or under pressure, play alone or with other people, and spend a short time or settle in for longer sessions. Then use Steam tags and the game’s description to find candidates, read review text that matches your priorities, check system requirements and operating-system support, and confirm whether the game is released or still in Early Access. Steam’s refund policy can offer a limited safety net, but it is not a guarantee that a purchase will be refunded.
Decide what kind of strategy experience you want
“Strategy game” is a broad label. A tag can help you discover a game, but it cannot tell you by itself whether the decisions, pace, or play structure will suit you. Before opening a long list of candidates, describe the experience you want in practical terms. That gives you a basis for comparing games instead of treating a popular tag or review summary as a verdict.
Choose your preferred pace and decision style
Ask whether you want time to consider each move or prefer decisions that have to be made while events are unfolding. Also consider whether you want to focus on a small number of consequential choices or manage several things at once. These are preference questions, not a ranking of game types: the right answer is the one that makes you want to keep playing.
Look for evidence in the game’s description and in written reviews. Reviewers may explain whether a game feels demanding, deliberate, hectic, or easy to learn. Those descriptions are more useful when they refer to the aspect you care about. A comment that a game is “complex,” for example, is not enough on its own; look for context about what is complex and whether that complexity is presented as enjoyable or frustrating.

Decide whether you will play alone or with others
Be specific about how you expect to play. If you want a solo experience, check that the game offers the kind of single-player play you have in mind. If you want to play with other people, verify that the relevant multiplayer mode is available and suits your plans. A broad strategy label does not establish what modes a particular game supports. Check the current Steam Store page and look for written reviews that discuss the mode you intend to use.
It also helps to distinguish “I might play with friends” from “multiplayer is essential.” If it is essential, treat confirmation of the mode as a requirement, not a bonus. If solo play is your main plan, give more weight to evidence about that experience than to comments about a mode you may never use.
Set expectations for complexity and time
Think about how much you are willing to learn and how long you want a typical session to last. You may welcome a game that asks you to understand a lot of systems, or prefer one that lets you get into decisions quickly. You may be looking for sessions that fit a limited window, or be comfortable with play that takes longer to reach a satisfying stopping point. The available evidence does not establish a universal measure for complexity or session length, so use the description and relevant review text rather than assuming a genre tag answers these questions.
Write down your priorities before comparing candidates. Separate must-haves from preferences: for example, a particular play mode may be essential while a certain pace is merely desirable. This distinction makes it easier to reject a game that fails a requirement even if other aspects look appealing.
Use Steam tags to discover games, then verify the fit
Steam tags help classify games and support browsing and recommendations. They are a useful way to generate a shortlist, not a complete explanation of how a game plays. Steam’s documentation describes how tags work for the store: Steam Tags.
Build a shortlist from the tags that match your preferences
Start with tags that describe the experience you want, rather than selecting a game solely because it has the word “strategy” attached to it. Browse candidates whose tags suggest a relevant pace, play structure, or mode. Treat a match as a reason to investigate, not proof that the game will meet your expectations.
Tags are most useful at the discovery stage. They can point you toward a category of games, but they do not settle how demanding a particular game is, how its systems interact, or whether its solo or multiplayer play suits you. When a tag and the description leave a question unanswered, keep that question open and look for more direct evidence.

Read the description for the actual experience
On each candidate’s Steam Store page, read the description with your own criteria in mind. Look for concrete information about what you do, how play is structured, and whether the game supports the mode you want. Do not infer a feature from a tag if the description does not confirm it. If the page does not establish something important to your decision, mark it as unknown rather than assuming the answer is yes.
Use the same questions for every candidate. Does the description indicate the kind of decisions you want to make? Does it explain whether you can play alone or with others? Does it make the expected pace or complexity clearer? Consistency matters: comparing one game’s detailed feature information with another game’s broad tag list can make the first seem more suitable simply because you have more information about it.
Keep evidence and assumptions separate
A simple comparison note can prevent a guess from turning into a conclusion. For each candidate, record the evidence you found, the question it answers, and anything that remains uncertain. For example, write “description confirms the mode I want” rather than “probably supports it” when the page does not say. If an unresolved point is a must-have, pause the decision until you can verify it.
Do not treat a missing detail as proof that a game lacks a feature; it is simply not established by the information you have checked. Equally, do not treat an attractive description or a matching tag as confirmation of a feature the page has not stated.
Read reviews for the experiences that matter to you
Steam user reviews report players’ experiences and whether they recommend a game. The summary score is based on positive recommendations and has calculation rules that include purchase and language considerations. Steam Support explains its review system here: Steam User Reviews. Use the summary to orient yourself, then read written reviews to understand what players mean.
Use the summary as a signal, not a substitute for judgment
A summary score condenses recommendations; it does not tell you whether the reviewers value the same things you do. A generally positive response cannot establish that the game has your preferred pace, meets your hardware needs, or provides the mode you want. A less positive summary likewise does not, by itself, explain whether the concerns apply to your priorities.
Keep the score in its proper role: it can help you decide whether a candidate deserves more attention, but the reasons behind recommendations matter more to an individual buying decision. Do not read the summary as an objective measure of quality for every player or as a promise about your own experience.

Look for relevant written review themes
Read reviews that discuss the aspects you identified earlier. If you care about learning the game, look for descriptions of how understandable or demanding its systems feel. If you plan to play alone, focus on comments about that experience. If you intend to play with others, seek review text that addresses the relevant multiplayer experience. For pace, complexity, or time commitment, prefer comments that describe what the reviewer actually encountered over a one-word verdict.

Look for recurring themes rather than letting one vivid comment decide the purchase. A review can be sincere and still reflect a different preference, play mode, or expectation from yours. Ask whether the reviewer’s reason for recommending or criticizing the game would matter to you. If it would not, give that comment less weight in your decision.
Translate each review into a decision
When a review identifies a drawback, connect it to your own must-haves and preferences. A drawback may be decisive if it conflicts with an essential requirement; it may be unimportant if it concerns an aspect you do not plan to use. The same applies to praise: a feature is not a selling point for you unless it matches what you want from the game.
If reviews disagree, do not assume that one side must be wrong. Their different experiences may point to different expectations or priorities. Compare the substance of each comment with the game’s description, then decide whether the disagreement reveals a trade-off you are willing to accept.
Check that your computer and operating system are supported
Before buying, compare the candidate’s system requirements and supported operating systems with your own computer. Steam Support specifically advises checking hardware requirements as well as operating-system support: Steam Support: platform availability. Check these details on the individual game’s Steam Store page; do not assume that a game will work just because other games in the same broad category run on your device.

Find the requirements on the game’s current Store page and compare them with the hardware and operating system on the computer where you intend to play. Check every relevant item the page lists rather than focusing on a single component. A mismatch or an unknown specification is a reason to investigate further, not a reason to guess that the game will run acceptably.
System requirements provide the compatibility information shown for that game; they do not establish your preferred level of performance in every situation. If the page does not answer a compatibility question that matters to you, avoid treating the absence of an answer as confirmation. The practical buying decision depends on both the listed requirements and the details of your own system.

Check the operating system separately
Hardware is only part of the check. Confirm that the game supports the operating system you use, as Steam Support advises. If you use more than one computer or operating system, check for the device on which you actually expect to play. A candidate that fits one machine may not fit another.
When your system details or the game’s requirements are unclear, resolve that uncertainty before purchase if compatibility is essential. A favorable review score cannot answer whether your particular setup is supported.

Confirm release status and inspect Early Access games carefully
Check whether the game is released or offered in Early Access, and assess the current listing rather than relying on an older impression of its state. Steam’s Early Access guidance says purchases remain subject to Steam’s refund policy and directs attention to the game’s current state and developer updates: Steam Early Access.
Judge the game that is listed now
For an Early Access game, read the current description and developer updates on its Steam page. Ask whether the state described there is acceptable to you today. Do not buy solely on the assumption that a future update will add a feature, change a system, or resolve a concern unless the current page provides information you are willing to rely on. Your decision should be based on the experience available as described now, not on an unverified expectation of what it may become.
Also check the date and context of any information you are using. A review or description of a game at an earlier stage may not describe the current listing. Conversely, do not assume that a game’s status or development progress has changed without checking the live page.
Apply the same questions to released games
Release status does not remove the need to check the current Store page, description, requirements, and relevant reviews. It simply answers a different question from whether the game’s present state suits you. Treat status, compatibility, play style, and review themes as separate pieces of evidence rather than allowing one to stand in for the others.
Check the live listing before you commit
Use the current Steam Store page for the final pass. Verify the game’s present description, tags, system requirements, supported operating systems, and release status. Confirm the edition and price shown on that page before buying, since title-specific availability and purchase details must be checked on the live listing. Do not rely on a remembered price or on information about a different edition.

This last check is especially useful when you made your shortlist earlier. A candidate’s current listing is the relevant place to confirm what is being sold and what is stated about the game now. If a detail you consider essential is missing or unclear, decide whether you can accept that uncertainty before proceeding.
Understand Steam’s refund rule without relying on it as a guarantee
Steam Support says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason.” The policy qualifies that statement: for games, the standard rule is to request the refund within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Steam describes exceptions, says requests outside the standard rules may still be reviewed, and warns that refunds are not a way to obtain free games. The 14-day and under-two-hour conditions describe the standard rule, not an unconditional promise that every request will be granted. Steam’s policy page was last updated April 23, 2024; because policy wording can change, check the current page rather than treating that date as a guarantee that the policy remains unchanged.

Use the refund policy as a limited safety net after you have made a careful choice, not as a substitute for checking the game. It does not answer whether the game fits your preferences or computer, and it should not be treated as permission to buy games with the intention of playing them for free.
A practical comparison method
When several candidates remain, compare them against the same questions. This table is a framework for organizing evidence, not a ranking: the answer depends on what you value and what each game’s current page and relevant reviews establish.

Use must-haves to narrow, then preferences to choose
First remove candidates that fail a must-have: for instance, an essential play mode or operating-system requirement that the current listing does not confirm. Then compare the remaining games on preferences such as pace, complexity, and review themes. This order avoids letting an appealing feature distract from a deal-breaker.
If two candidates still seem close, identify the one unanswered question most likely to change your choice. Return to the relevant listing or reviews and look for direct evidence. If the evidence does not establish an answer, make the uncertainty explicit and decide whether you are comfortable buying with that uncertainty. Do not turn a guess into a fact merely to force a winner.

A strong candidate is one whose described experience matches your priorities, whose important features are supported by the current listing, whose relevant review themes you can accept, and whose system requirements and operating-system support fit your computer. Early Access status and the live edition and price are part of that final check. There is no universal best strategy game for every Steam buyer: the right choice follows from the kind of play you want and the evidence on each game’s current page.
