Choose an industrial steam turbine from the plant’s steam balance outward—not from the largest advertised megawatt rating. Start by documenting inlet steam pressure, temperature and flow; every process-header requirement; the plant’s electrical or shaft-power objective; and how those values change during startup, turndown, seasonal operation and process interruptions. Then select the exhaust arrangement—back-pressure, extraction, extraction-condensing or straight condensing—that can meet the site’s useful-heat duty while delivering the required power. The final choice must be confirmed by a project-specific OEM proposal with defined guarantees, auxiliaries, site conditions and operating points.

1. Define the plant duty before looking at turbine models

A steam turbine is an energy-conversion component inside a steam system. Its suitability depends on the conditions at its inlet, the pressure and temperature required downstream, the amount of steam available, and whether the plant values useful heat, electricity, mechanical shaft power or a combination. A model that looks attractive on a nameplate can be unsuitable if its exhaust pressure does not match the process header or if it cannot follow the plant’s real load profile.

Record the inlet steam conditions

  • Steam mass flow at the turbine inlet, including normal, minimum and maximum values.
  • Inlet pressure and temperature, with the measurement location and expected variation.
  • Steam quality or other condition information required by the turbine supplier.
  • Operating modes such as startup, standby, seasonal production and process interruptions.

Use a time-based operating profile rather than one design-point number. A turbine may spend much of its life away from the nominal condition, and the off-design points determine whether it can provide useful process steam and stable power during normal operation.

Map every process-steam requirement

For each process header, document the required steam flow, pressure and temperature, plus the hours or production conditions in which that demand exists. Identify whether the header can accept turbine exhaust directly, whether steam must be withdrawn at an intermediate pressure, and whether any steam demand is non-negotiable during electrical or process turndown.

State the power objective

Define whether the turbine will supply electricity for on-site loads, export electricity, provide backup capability, or drive a specific machine. State the required output at each important operating point, not only the peak target. If the turbine will drive a pump, compressor or other rotating machine, specify shaft speed, torque, starting method, driven-equipment transients and any required speed-control range.

2. Select the exhaust arrangement around the heat sink

The exhaust arrangement determines where the turbine’s remaining steam energy goes. That decision controls the balance between useful process heat and electricity, and it introduces different condenser, cooling and control requirements.

Configuration Where the steam goes When to evaluate it Key implications
Back-pressure (noncondensing) All turbine exhaust enters a downstream steam system at a pressure set by the process or heating duty. When the plant can continuously use exhaust steam at the required pressure. Useful heat is preserved in the process system; a condenser is not the normal heat sink for the exhaust.
Extraction, noncondensing Steam is withdrawn at an intermediate pressure and the remaining flow continues to a lower-pressure process header. When the plant needs more than one useful steam condition. Extraction flow and pressure must remain compatible with both process headers and the turbine’s control range.
Extraction-condensing A portion of the flow is extracted for process use; the remainder goes to a condenser. When the plant needs useful process steam and also wants power from steam that cannot be used in the process. Requires condenser and cooling-system design while retaining process-steam controls.
Straight condensing Steam exhausts to a condenser. When the primary objective is power generation and useful process steam is not required from the turbine exhaust. Power-oriented arrangement with condenser, cooling and vacuum-system requirements; it is generally unlike most cogeneration applications.

These categories describe functions, not a universal ranking. A back-pressure unit can be the best answer for a plant with a dependable process-steam sink, while an extraction-condensing unit can be better where process demand changes or excess steam must still produce electricity. A straight-condensing unit may fit a power-focused installation but can waste an opportunity to use heat if the site has a substantial process demand.

3. Match the heat-and-power balance, not just electrical output

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Guide to Combined Heat and Power Systems for Boiler Owners and Operators states: “In selecting a steam turbine design, it is important to match CHP pressure and temperature requirements and to maximize electrical efficiency while providing the desired thermal output.” That principle is the central selection test.

Compare candidate arrangements at the same inlet steam conditions and the same plant operating profile. Record both the useful process steam delivered and the electrical output. A configuration that produces more electricity at a single point may be inferior over a year if it cannot supply the pressure, temperature or quantity of steam required by production.

When process heat is the priority

If the facility’s process cannot operate without a dependable steam header, begin with the required exhaust pressure and flow. A back-pressure or extraction arrangement may preserve the needed thermal output, even if its electrical output is lower than a fully condensing alternative. The decision should account for the hours when the process header is available as the turbine’s heat sink.

When power and process heat both matter

Extraction-condensing equipment can divide the flow: one portion serves process demand and the balance continues to the condenser for additional power production. The supplier must show how extraction pressure, extraction flow and condenser operation respond when process demand changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the installation is power-oriented

A straight-condensing arrangement sends the flow to a condenser rather than a process header. Evaluate the condenser, cooling conditions and operating schedule as part of the turbine package. Do not compare its electrical efficiency with a CHP arrangement without also accounting for the useful steam that the CHP arrangement supplies.

4. Decide between generator duty and mechanical-drive duty

Industrial steam turbine packages can drive an electrical generator or plant machinery such as pumps and compressors. The correct choice follows the plant’s required shaft duty and electrical-system objective.

Generator drive

For generator service, define the required electrical output, voltage and frequency, grid-parallel or islanding requirements, synchronization method, allowable export and import conditions, and the plant’s response to load changes. These electrical-system details belong in the same bid package as the steam profile so bidders size the turbine, generator and controls together.

Mechanical drive

For a pump, compressor or other machine, define the driven equipment’s speed, torque, transient behavior and control range. A mechanical-drive turbine may be preferable where the plant has a large continuous shaft load and does not need all available steam energy converted to electricity. The turbine supplier and driven-equipment supplier must agree on coupling, speed control, overspeed protection and operating limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some plants need both functions—for example, a turbine-generator for site power and separate turbine drives for large rotating machinery. Treat each duty as a defined operating case rather than assuming one package can satisfy incompatible speed, pressure and control requirements without a detailed engineering review.

5. Screen turbine families using real operating limits

Manufacturer product families differ in inlet steam conditions, exhaust pressure, extraction arrangements, speed and output. Current Siemens Energy industrial steam-turbine information describes applications including CHP, process industries and waste-to-energy, with packages intended for generator or mechanical drives. GE Vernova also publishes steam-turbine configurations for utility and industrial applications. These pages are useful for creating a shortlist, but their portfolio limits are not guarantees for a particular plant.

For every candidate family, ask the OEM to confirm the project-specific envelope:

  • Minimum, normal and maximum inlet pressure, temperature and flow.
  • Back-pressure or condensing exhaust limits.
  • Available extraction pressures, extraction-flow range and control method.
  • Rated and operating speed, including any required speed range.
  • Generator or driven-machine output at each specified operating point.
  • Turndown behavior, startup constraints and response to process interruptions.
  • Required condenser, cooling-water or other heat-rejection conditions.
  • Auxiliary systems, controls, lubrication, drains, valves and instrumentation included in the package.

Published product information is manufacturer-provided and can change by model, region and edition. Treat it as a screening source, then obtain a written proposal that states assumptions and guarantees at your conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Compare feasible configurations on consistent axes

Once the steam balance identifies feasible arrangements, compare them using the same operating cases and boundary conditions. A simple comparison matrix prevents a high-output option from winning merely because it omits process or balance-of-plant requirements.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Why it matters
Useful process steam What flow, pressure and temperature are delivered to each header, and during which operating modes? Determines whether production requirements are actually met.
Electrical output What output is guaranteed at normal, minimum and maximum flow? Reveals performance across the real operating profile instead of one rating.
Load flexibility How does the turbine respond when steam demand, power demand or process operation changes? Shows whether controls can follow the plant without sacrificing the required header conditions.
Condenser and cooling Is a condenser required, and what site cooling or heat-rejection conditions are assumed? Determines additional equipment, utilities and site constraints.
Drive arrangement Is the output matched to a generator, pump, compressor or another machine? Prevents a mismatch between turbine output and the actual shaft or electrical duty.
Installed and lifecycle cost What are the equipment, installation, auxiliary, maintenance and operating assumptions? Cost is project-specific; comparable boundaries are essential.

The available technical sources do not establish a universal lifecycle-cost model, payback period or cross-vendor efficiency ranking. Require each bidder to price the same scope and operating profile rather than comparing headline equipment prices.

7. Follow a step-by-step selection process

  1. Build the steam and load profile. Gather inlet pressure, temperature and flow; process-header pressure, temperature and flow; electrical or shaft-power targets; and the duration of each operating mode.
  2. Identify the heat sink. Decide whether exhaust steam can be used continuously by the process, whether multiple pressure levels are required, or whether excess flow must be condensed.
  3. Shortlist configurations. Evaluate back-pressure, extraction, extraction-condensing and straight-condensing arrangements against the documented heat sink and power objective.
  4. Define the driven output. Specify generator duty or the exact pump, compressor or other machine duty, including speed, torque, transients and control requirements.
  5. Check the operating envelope. Remove turbine families that cannot accept the project’s inlet conditions, exhaust pressure, extraction requirements, speed or output range.
  6. Define site conditions. Provide condenser and cooling conditions where applicable, steam-system interfaces, electrical-system requirements, available utilities and the intended package boundary.
  7. Issue identical technical information to bidders. Give every OEM the same load cases, process requirements, site conditions and requested guarantees.
  8. Normalize the proposals. Compare guaranteed performance, useful steam delivery, electrical or shaft output, auxiliaries, controls, maintenance scope and exclusions at the same operating points.
  9. Resolve deviations before selection. Ask bidders to identify every assumption, limitation and non-included item, then recalculate the comparison if a proposal changes the steam balance or site requirements.
  10. Choose the configuration that meets the complete duty. Select the option that satisfies process steam and power objectives over the operating profile, not the one with the largest isolated rating.

8. Prepare a comparable OEM request

A useful request for proposal is a data package, not just a requested megawatt value. Include the following information for every bidder:

  • Steam source, inlet pressure, inlet temperature and mass-flow cases.
  • Process headers, required pressure and temperature, flow range and operating hours.
  • Electrical demand, export target, generator interface and operating modes.
  • Mechanical-drive requirements where applicable, including speed and torque.
  • Condenser and cooling conditions for condensing or extraction-condensing options.
  • Startup, turndown, seasonal and process-interruption cases.
  • Site conditions, installation boundary and the auxiliaries expected in the package.
  • Requested guarantees for output, useful steam conditions, performance and operating limits.
  • Required maintenance scope, spare-parts assumptions and lifecycle-cost inputs.

Ask each bidder to present a guarantee table using the same operating points. The proposal should identify which values are guaranteed, which are calculated, which depend on site conditions and which are outside the supplier’s scope. This makes a technically smaller turbine easier to compare fairly with a larger package whose rating depends on conditions the plant cannot provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Account for balance-of-plant requirements

The turbine is not a stand-alone purchase. Back-pressure and extraction systems must connect to process headers and controls. Condensing systems add a condenser and heat-rejection equipment. Generator packages require electrical integration, while mechanical drives require coupling and driven-equipment coordination.

Require the bidder to identify auxiliaries and interfaces explicitly. At minimum, clarify steam valves and drains, control and instrumentation scope, lubrication equipment, condenser and cooling scope where applicable, generator or coupling scope, electrical connections, commissioning responsibilities and operating documentation. If a proposal excludes an item needed to achieve its stated output, the comparison is not complete.

11. Use cost as a lifecycle decision, not a sticker-price contest

There is no universal turbine price, payback period or lifecycle-cost answer for industrial plants. Costs depend on configuration, steam conditions, output, condenser and cooling requirements, generator or mechanical-drive equipment, controls, installation scope, maintenance strategy and the value of process heat and electricity at the site.

Ask bidders to separate capital cost from recurring assumptions and to state the operating profile used for any energy or maintenance estimate. Compare the same useful-steam delivery, electrical or shaft output, availability assumptions and scope boundary. If one configuration changes the plant’s boiler, condenser, cooling or process-header requirements, include those effects in the project comparison rather than treating the turbine as an isolated purchase.

12. Illustrative decision paths

Plant with a steady process-steam sink

If a facility has a stable process header that can accept turbine exhaust at the required pressure, begin with a back-pressure evaluation. Confirm that the header can absorb the exhaust during minimum production and that the turbine can follow startup and turndown conditions.

Plant with two useful steam pressures

If production needs an intermediate-pressure header and a lower-pressure header, evaluate extraction, noncondensing arrangements. The proposal must show extraction flow, pressure control and the remaining exhaust condition for both normal and reduced process demand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plant with variable heat demand and a need for additional power

If process demand varies and surplus steam should still generate electricity, evaluate extraction-condensing equipment. Require a clear operating map showing the tradeoff between extracted process steam and condenser flow.

Power-focused installation without a process-steam requirement

If the plant’s objective is power generation and no useful process steam is required from the turbine exhaust, a straight-condensing arrangement may be appropriate. Confirm condenser, cooling and electrical-system conditions before comparing output.

13. What the evidence can and cannot establish

The DOE CHP guidance and steam-turbine materials provide the configuration logic and the requirement to balance pressure, temperature, electrical efficiency and useful thermal output. Official Siemens Energy and GE Vernova product pages illustrate available industrial and utility product paths. They do not provide an independent, cross-vendor performance test, a universal lifecycle-cost comparison or a guarantee for any specific plant.

Product specifications and availability can change by model, region and date. The turbine’s actual efficiency, output, steam balance, payback, safety compliance and maintenance result must be established for the project’s conditions through engineering calculations and an OEM proposal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Final selection checklist

  • Have inlet pressure, temperature and flow been documented for every material operating mode?
  • Are all process headers defined by pressure, temperature, flow and operating hours?
  • Is the plant’s electrical export, self-generation or mechanical-drive objective explicit?
  • Has the exhaust arrangement been selected from the heat sink and process demand?
  • Have condenser and cooling requirements been included where applicable?
  • Are generator, shaft speed, torque and control requirements defined?
  • Has each candidate been checked against its actual inlet, exhaust, extraction, speed and output limits?
  • Do all bidders use identical operating cases, scope boundaries and guarantee conditions?
  • Are useful steam delivery and power output compared together?
  • Are capital, auxiliary, maintenance and lifecycle assumptions stated on the same basis?
  • Has the selected OEM confirmed the duty with a project-specific proposal?
