Choose a soundbar by matching its speaker layout, placement needs, and connections to your room and TV—not by channel count alone. A compact all-in-one bar suits a simple setup; a separate subwoofer can add bass; and satellite or height speakers need more room and careful placement. Dolby Atmos is worth considering when your content, playback devices, connection, and listening space can all support it.
How do I choose a soundbar?
Start with the room and the way you watch. Consider how many people listen, where they sit, whether the bar can sit below the TV, and whether you have space for separate speakers. As Dolby puts it in its Home Theater Setup Guide, “There is no one-size-fits-all solution when creating a home theater.”
- Room and seating: A layout that works for a centered seat in a small room may not suit a wide seating area or a dedicated media room.
- Dialog and bass: Think about whether clearer, more prominent TV audio is your main goal or whether you also want stronger low-frequency effects.
- Physical space: Account for the bar, subwoofer, and any satellite speakers, as well as unobstructed paths for sound.
- Connections and formats: Check the ports and audio-format support of the TV, soundbar, and devices you use to play content.
- Setup effort: Separate speakers create more placement choices, but they also require more space and setup than an all-in-one bar.
Channel notation describes speaker configuration, not a guaranteed measure of sound quality. In a 5.1.2 system, the first number is ear-level speakers, the second is subwoofers, and the third is height speakers. The figures describe the system’s speaker arrangement; they do not tell you by themselves how it will sound in your room.
Which soundbar layout fits your room?
| System type | Room fit and trade-offs |
|---|---|
| Compact all-in-one bar | Favors a simple footprint and fewer separate speakers. Consider whether its bass and surround effect meet your needs; Dolby describes integrated soundbars as a convenient room solution. |
| Bar with a separate subwoofer | Adds a dedicated low-frequency speaker, so plan for a practical location and be ready to test placement in the room. |
| Bar with satellite surrounds or height drivers | Provides more speaker positions but depends on available space, seating, ceiling conditions, and clear sound paths. |
| AV receiver and separate speakers | Offers more individual components to tailor to a dedicated room, with more equipment and placement work. |
These are different approaches rather than a simple ranking. A higher channel count does not guarantee better sound: room shape, listening position, speaker placement, and system design all matter.

Do I need Dolby Atmos?
Not necessarily. Atmos is most relevant if you want height effects and can play compatible content through compatible equipment. It is not created by the soundbar alone: the content, source device, TV or connection path, and soundbar must support the format. Dolby’s speaker setup guide describes compatible streaming paths and hardware such as Blu-ray players; service catalogs and device support vary.
Before choosing an Atmos bar, check each part of your playback chain. The source may also need to output audio as bitstream. Confirm the exact support in the manuals or specifications for your TV, bar, and source device rather than assuming that one Atmos-capable component makes the whole setup compatible.

An Atmos soundbar can use upward-firing drivers or virtualization. Upward-firing designs need a clear path to the ceiling and are more dependent on room conditions. Virtualized designs have fewer special room constraints, according to Dolby’s setup guidance. If your room cannot accommodate clear upward sound paths, that distinction may matter more than the Atmos label alone.
Check HDMI and audio compatibility before buying
HDMI ARC or eARC can send audio from a TV to a soundbar. HDMI passthrough is another option when the TV, bar, and source device support the arrangement. Dolby explains these connection paths in its home theater setup guidance. Check the labels and capabilities of the exact ports on your equipment and follow the product instructions; ARC and eARC support should not be assumed from the presence of an HDMI port.

- Identify the TV’s audio-output options and whether it supports ARC or eARC.
- Check the soundbar’s HDMI inputs and output, including which port supports ARC or eARC.
- Check how your source device connects and whether the TV or bar supports the audio formats you want on that path.
- Choose TV-to-bar ARC/eARC or a passthrough arrangement according to the capabilities of all connected devices.
- Use an appropriate high-speed HDMI cable where required, and confirm compatibility in the equipment instructions.
Format support can depend on the full connection path, not just the soundbar. If Atmos is a priority, verify the content and app, the streaming device or player, the TV, and the soundbar together.

Upward-firing Atmos bars
Dolby recommends placing an upward-firing Atmos soundbar at or slightly above seated ear level, with an unobstructed line of sight from its upward-firing drivers to the ceiling. A cabinet or soffit that blocks this path can interfere with the intended effect. For this specific setup guidance, Dolby describes an ideal ceiling height of 7.5 to 12 feet (2.3 to 3.66 meters) and prefers a flat, reflective ceiling. These are recommendations for upward-firing designs, not universal requirements for every soundbar.

Virtualized Atmos bars
Dolby describes virtualized Atmos soundbars as more flexible about room conditions. Place the bar below the TV around ear level and keep the path between the bar and listeners clear.
Subwoofers
A separate subwoofer can add low-frequency bass. Bass is not directional, but the room and the subwoofer’s position still affect the result. Dolby advises considering distance from walls, cabinetry, and furniture, as well as separation from the soundbar. Begin near the bar and TV, then try other practical locations in the actual room rather than assuming one position is best.

Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Make the final choice against your equipment and priorities
- Choose an all-in-one bar when a compact footprint and simpler installation matter most.
- Consider a separate subwoofer if added bass is important and you have somewhere practical to place it.
- Choose satellite or height speakers only if your room, seating, and unobstructed sound paths can accommodate them.
- Prioritize Atmos when you have compatible content and devices along the playback path, and the bar’s design fits your ceiling and placement conditions.
- Confirm connection support on the exact TV, soundbar, and source device before purchase; product availability, specifications, and current model rankings are not established here.
