Choose an SCA tool by the way your repositories actually build software, not by a generic “best” list. Start with the languages, package managers, manifests, lockfiles, containers and repository host you use. Then compare how each candidate resolves direct and transitive dependencies, matches versions to vulnerability intelligence, evaluates licenses and suspicious packages, produces or consumes SBOMs, explains reachability, integrates with pull requests and builds, and helps developers fix findings.
SCA should be one layer of an AI-assisted development workflow. It inventories third-party components and their known security or licensing risks; code scanning is still needed for vulnerabilities and coding errors in first-party code, including code written by an AI assistant. The practical choice is the tool that gives your team reliable component visibility and a remediation process it will use continuously.
What SCA can—and cannot—tell you about AI-generated code
Software composition analysis identifies the open-source and third-party components in an application and evaluates component-related risk. Depending on the product and configuration, that can include publicly disclosed vulnerabilities, license obligations, malicious-package indicators, outdated versions, and policy violations. The output is useful only when the scanner identifies the component accurately and can match its version to current intelligence.
AI-assisted coding makes this inventory more important, not less. An assistant may add a package that a developer did not previously use, suggest a similarly named package, omit a lockfile update, or introduce a dependency indirectly through a framework. The generated source may also be copied into a repository without a clear record of why a component was selected. Review the proposed package name and source, resolve the actual dependency graph, and scan it in the same pull-request and build process used for manually written code.

Direct and transitive dependencies
OWASP’s DevSecOps Guideline puts the distinction plainly: “A direct dependency is a package your team explicitly chose.” It follows with: “A transitive dependency is everything that package depends on — and everything those packages depend on.” A project that evaluates only its manifest’s top-level entries can therefore miss components that ship in production.
Require graph resolution from manifests and lockfiles, and confirm that the result includes transitive packages. Look for stable component identifiers, such as Package URLs (PURLs), so the same component can be correlated across an SBOM, a build record, an alert and a portfolio inventory.
First-party vulnerabilities are a separate problem
SCA does not prove that generated application logic is safe. An AI-written authentication check, input validator or authorization branch can be insecure even when every dependency has a clean vulnerability record. GitHub documents dependency review as a way to examine dependency changes and vulnerable versions before a pull request is merged, while code scanning addresses vulnerabilities and coding errors in new or modified code. Use both capabilities where they fit your repository and plan.

A 2025 preprint by Maximilian Schreiber and Pascal Tippe analyzed 7,703 files attributed to four AI coding tools in public GitHub repositories. Using CodeQL, the study reported 4,241 CWE instances across 77 vulnerability types. It also reported that 87.9% of the analyzed code had no identifiable CWE-mapped vulnerability, with variation by programming language.
Those figures describe a bounded set of publicly available, explicitly attributed files, not a population-wide safety rate for AI-generated software and not an evaluation of SCA products. They support a narrower conclusion: generated code can contain ordinary coding vulnerabilities, so dependency analysis must be paired with first-party code analysis and human review.

The capabilities to compare before you choose
Use the following criteria as a requirements checklist. A tool that is excellent at one dimension can still be a poor fit if it cannot identify your packages or fit the way your team builds and fixes software.
| Decision axis | Questions to ask in an evaluation | Why it matters for AI-assisted repositories |
|---|---|---|
| Ecosystems and artifacts | Which languages, package managers, manifests, lockfiles, containers, operating-system packages and binaries are supported? | Components that are not identified cannot be assessed. Support must match what your builds actually ship. |
| Dependency identification | Does the tool resolve direct and transitive graphs, recognize generated or vendored manifests, and import or export PURLs and SBOMs? | AI-suggested packages and indirect components can enter quickly; a complete graph is the basis for reliable findings. |
| Vulnerability intelligence | Which advisory sources are used, how often are they updated, how are package versions matched, and what evidence is shown with each alert? | Results depend on both correct component identification and the quality and freshness of available vulnerability data. |
| License and policy workflow | Can you see licenses, set allow or deny rules, document exceptions, assign owners and retain an audit record? | AI-generated dependency additions still create attribution, notice and compatibility obligations. |
| Malicious-package risk | Does the product flag typosquatting, dependency confusion, suspicious behavior, abandoned maintenance or other package-risk signals? | OWASP’s current guidance calls out AI-hallucinated dependencies; a package can be dangerous even without a published CVE. |
| Reachability and prioritization | Does it show whether vulnerable code is reachable in your supported languages, explain the call-path evidence and state uncertainty? | Reachability can reduce triage noise, but dynamic dispatch, reflection and incomplete call graphs limit what “not reachable” means. |
| Workflow integration | Can scans run in pull requests and CI builds, from an IDE or CLI, through issue trackers and in a central portfolio view? | Routine, repeatable checks are more dependable than occasional manual scans and make ownership visible. |
| SBOM and continuous monitoring | Can the platform generate or ingest CycloneDX SBOMs, consume VEX statements, monitor new advisories and query components across projects? | Build-time checks do not answer what happens after release; an inventory enables ongoing monitoring. |
| Alert handling and remediation | Are severity and exploitability explained? Can teams suppress findings with review dates, assign owners, suggest upgrades or open update changes? | Findings reduce risk only when developers can judge them and complete a verified fix. |
| Cost and terms | Which features, repositories, contributors, scans, support levels and retention periods are included in the plan you would actually buy? | Entitlements and limits change frequently, so confirm them in current vendor documentation rather than relying on an old comparison. |
Match the tool approach to your development workflow
GitHub-native dependency and code workflows
If your repositories and pull requests are already managed on GitHub, a native workflow can put dependency review next to the proposed change. GitHub describes dependency review as showing the impact of dependency changes and vulnerable versions before merge. Its code-scanning capability addresses vulnerabilities and coding errors in new or modified code, which complements rather than duplicates dependency review.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the current Code Security entitlements for your organization and repository type. Availability varies by plan, and public repositories have some capabilities available by default. Validate the exact policy controls, alert retention and private-repository coverage you need before making this approach your only control.
SBOM-centered operations
OWASP Dependency-Track is an example of an SBOM-driven operating model. It consumes SBOMs, analyzes known security, operational and license risks, and presents component and vulnerability views across a portfolio. Its documentation states that “Components defined in SBOMs will be analyzed for known vulnerabilities using multiple sources of vulnerability intelligence, including the NVD.”
This model suits teams that build software in several systems, need an inventory after deployment, or want one place to monitor components from different build tools. You still need a dependable process to generate an accurate SBOM for every build and to associate it with the released artifact.

Local and CI scanning
OWASP dep-scan documents repository and container inputs, local package vulnerability scanning, SBOM, vulnerability-disclosure (VDR) and VEX generation, reachability analysis, and package-risk auditing. Its documentation lists OSV, NVD, GitHub, NPM and Linux vulnerability sources and says: “Package vulnerability scanning is performed locally and is quite fast. No server is used!”
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A local or pipeline-first scanner can be useful when source code cannot be sent to a hosted service or when developers need a fast check before opening a pull request. Verify the ecosystems, lockfile behavior, container support and configuration required by your specific project; documented support is not a guarantee that every framework or build layout will resolve cleanly.
Build-tool-integrated analysis
OWASP Dependency-Check is described as a command-line and build-tool-integrated SCA utility that identifies dependencies and reports known publicly disclosed vulnerabilities. Its project documentation describes analyzers and CPE/CVE matching. This approach is a natural fit when your build system is the authoritative place to resolve dependencies and you want a gate or report produced with each build.
Confirm how the analyzer handles your package manager, generated manifests, shaded or vendored code and offline builds. A build report that omits a runtime dependency is still incomplete, even if the build itself succeeds.
Commercial platforms and reachability-focused products
OWASP’s guideline names commercial examples including Snyk Open Source, Mend and Endor Labs and discusses feature strengths such as developer workflow integration and reachability-oriented prioritization. Treat those descriptions as guidance about product approaches, not as independent performance testing or a universal ranking. Ask each vendor to demonstrate your languages, repository host, CI system, SBOM format and exception process with a representative project.

Implement SCA for an AI-assisted repository
- Inventory the software you actually ship. List languages, package managers, manifests, lockfiles, container images, operating-system packages, generated directories and release artifacts. Include repositories where an assistant is allowed to commit code, not only the largest production service.
- Resolve the complete graph. Run the candidate scanner against a clean checkout and the same lockfiles used by the build. Compare the output with the package manager’s resolved tree. Investigate missing transitive packages, duplicate versions and components that appear only in generated or container layers.
- Record stable identities. Prefer component records with PURLs or an equivalent identifier. Export an SBOM in a format your inventory system can ingest, and retain the association between the SBOM, source revision, build and released artifact.
- Establish a pull-request check. Have the tool report newly introduced vulnerable or disallowed components before merge. Review the proposed package name and source when an AI assistant adds a dependency, especially when the name is unfamiliar or resembles a popular package.
- Add a build-time check. Run the scan whenever the application is built, including scheduled rebuilds that can reveal a newly disclosed vulnerability in an unchanged lockfile. OWASP’s DevSecOps Verification Standard describes the mature pattern this way: “Whenever a build is executed, the tool automatically resolves the application’s dependency tree, generates a software bill of materials (SBOM), and checks each component against known vulnerability and license data, reporting the status back to the build.”
- Define license and package-risk policy. Decide which licenses require legal review, which package sources are trusted, how typosquatting or dependency-confusion alerts block a build, and who can approve a time-limited exception. Store the reason, owner and review date with every exception.
- Route findings to owners. Include the affected component and version, introduced-by path, severity, advisory evidence, reachability evidence when available, fixed versions and a suggested owner. Avoid sending every alert to one security queue without repository context.
- Use reachability as prioritization, not absolution. If a tool reports that a vulnerable function is not reachable, check the language and framework assumptions, dynamic dispatch, reflection and generated code. Keep the finding visible until the team has enough evidence to accept the residual risk or upgrade.
- Track remediation over time. Monitor new advisories against released SBOMs, measure aging findings and revisit suppressions. A component that was clean at release can become vulnerable when new intelligence is published.
- Scan first-party code separately. Run code scanning and appropriate tests for authentication, authorization, input handling, secrets, cryptography and other application logic. SCA cannot detect an insecure algorithm or access-control decision implemented in your own files.
How to test candidates without inventing a benchmark
There is no independent, directly comparable SCA effectiveness or pricing benchmark established for these approaches. Instead of assigning a universal score, run a short, evidence-based pilot on a representative repository and document what happened.
Use a representative project
- Choose a service with the package managers and languages that matter most to you.
- Include its lockfiles, generated code, container build and release process.
- Include at least one known direct dependency and one transitive dependency so you can verify graph resolution.
- Use a pull request that adds, upgrades and removes packages, then observe the review experience.
Ask for observable outputs
- Which files and artifacts were identified, and which were skipped?
- Can the tool show why a component was selected, where it entered the graph and which released artifact contains it?
- What advisory sources and update timestamps are shown for a finding?
- Can the team export and re-import a CycloneDX SBOM or VEX statement without losing component identity?
- How are license exceptions, suppressions, owners and review dates recorded?
- What evidence supports a reachability result, and how does the product represent uncertainty?
- Can developers receive a useful pull-request comment or issue without exposing secrets or source code to an unintended service?
- Can a security team query every project containing a vulnerable component after release?
Judge remediation, not alert volume
A large alert count can reflect broad detection, duplicate versions or weak prioritization; a small count can reflect missed artifacts. Have developers attempt to fix several findings during the pilot. Record whether the tool identifies a valid upgrade, explains breaking-change risk, opens a reviewable update change and preserves a clear audit trail. Treat automatically generated fixes as proposals that require tests and review, not as verified repairs.
Why reachability needs careful interpretation
Reachability analysis tries to determine whether application execution can call vulnerable code in a dependency. It can help a team prioritize a component used only in an unreachable feature over one invoked on every request. The result depends on the language, framework, call-graph construction and the code available to the analyzer.
Dynamic dispatch, reflection, runtime loading, generated code and configuration-driven routes can hide calls. A “not reachable” result therefore means “not demonstrated as reachable under this analysis,” not “safe.” Require the product to show the path or assumptions behind the result, identify languages with limited support and retain a policy for manually reviewing uncertain cases.

An SBOM is the component inventory for a particular build or artifact. Generate it from the resolved dependency graph, include transitive components, and sign or otherwise protect its integrity where your release process supports that. OWASP’s LLM application guidance recommends maintaining an accurate and signed SBOM, vulnerability scanning and patching, and a license inventory with regular audits. It also describes AI/ML BOMs as an emerging area; do not treat that emerging format as a replacement for the ordinary application dependency SBOM you need today.

VEX statements can add context about whether a product is affected by a vulnerability, but they do not correct an incomplete inventory. An SBOM platform can monitor new advisories after release, while a CI scanner catches newly introduced changes. Use both when the operational risk justifies the added process.
Common selection mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | What goes wrong | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Scanning only top-level manifests | Indirect packages that ship with the application are invisible. | Resolve and compare the full direct and transitive graph from the build’s lockfiles. |
| Treating SCA as an AI-code detector | Insecure first-party logic can pass while dependencies are clean. | Pair dependency analysis with code scanning, tests and human review of sensitive logic. |
| Trusting a package name suggested by an assistant | A typo, dependency-confusion package or malicious project can enter the build. | Verify the package source and maintainer context, then scan package risk and policy compliance. |
| Blocking every high-severity alert automatically | Developers bypass the control or create undocumented suppressions. | Use severity, exploitability, reachability evidence and business context, with owned and time-limited exceptions. |
| Assuming “not reachable” means “not vulnerable” | Reflection, dynamic dispatch or incomplete analysis can hide a call path. | Review the evidence and analyzer limits; keep uncertain findings visible. |
| Generating one SBOM at project start | Released artifacts and newly disclosed vulnerabilities are not tracked. | Generate an SBOM per build or release and monitor it continuously. |
| Choosing by alert count or a vendor ranking | Counts are not comparable across coverage, deduplication and policy settings. | Test representative workflows and remediation outcomes on your own repositories. |
| Ignoring plan and repository entitlements | A feature demonstrated publicly may not be available for your private projects. | Confirm current plan, repository-type, usage and retention terms before adoption. |
A practical decision framework
Choose a repository-native workflow when
Your team wants dependency changes reviewed beside pull requests, already uses a hosted repository’s code-scanning controls, and can verify that the current plan covers every private repository and contributor. Add a separate portfolio or SBOM service if you need cross-system inventory and post-release monitoring.
Choose an SBOM-centered workflow when
You release artifacts from multiple build systems, need a portfolio view, or must monitor components after deployment. Make SBOM generation a release requirement and test ingestion, component identity, VEX handling and ownership queries with real artifacts.
Choose local or build-integrated scanning when
Source-code residency, offline operation or existing build gates are decisive. Verify that the scanner resolves every production artifact, not only the developer checkout, and connect its reports to a durable tracking system.
Choose a commercial platform after demonstrating fit when
You need managed intelligence, developer workflow automation, reachability prioritization or remediation orchestration that your team cannot maintain. Require a hands-on demonstration using your languages, CI, repository model and exception process; do not infer performance from a feature list or vendor-reported percentages.
The bottom line for AI-generated code
The best SCA tool is the one that sees the components your build really ships, explains risk well enough for developers to act, and runs every time the software changes and after it is released. Make full dependency-graph coverage, current vulnerability and license intelligence, malicious-package checks, SBOM interoperability, reachability transparency, pull-request and CI integration, and accountable remediation non-negotiable evaluation criteria.
Then add code scanning for first-party vulnerabilities and coding errors. AI assistance changes how quickly dependencies and application logic appear; it does not change the need to inventory, review, patch and monitor them.
