For most homes, the practical setup is a manageable snow shovel for paths and entrances, a separate windshield ice scraper for the car, and either rock salt or traction grit chosen for the actual hazard. Pick the shovel by fit, weight and the area you must clear—not by an assumed “best” blade design. Use salt to treat ice, use sand or grit mainly to improve grip, and clear fresh snow before it is compacted whenever conditions allow.
The safest method is to work early, take small loads, push rather than lift where possible, and give extra attention to steps, slopes, shaded patches and places that stay wet. If the work exceeds your strength or balance, arrange help instead of turning a winter hazard into an injury.
The right tool for each winter job
These products overlap in winter preparation but do different jobs. Treating them as interchangeable leads to poor clearing and unnecessary effort.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Snow shovel | Move snow and loose ice from walkways and areas around the home, including near foundations and downspouts. | Choose a weight, handle height and head size you can control comfortably for the area you clear. | No reviewed authority establishes one universally best blade width, material or design. |
| Windshield ice scraper and brush | Remove frost and ice from vehicle windows before driving. | Keep one with the car as part of winter vehicle equipment. | It is not a substitute for a snow shovel or treatment for a footpath. |
| Rock salt | Melt existing ice or snow and help prevent ice from forming when conditions allow. | Use on suitable paths when frost, ice or snow is forecast, or when a damp surface is likely to be at or below freezing. | It needs time and moisture to work, can be washed away by heavy rain, and does not remove deep snow or compacted ice by itself. |
| Sand, ash or traction grit | Increase underfoot grip on a slippery surface. | Use when traction is the immediate need or salt is unavailable, following local advice and the product label. | It is primarily an abrasive traction aid, not an equivalent chemical de-icer. |
Official guidance from the Government of Canada identifies a snow shovel as a core tool for clearing around a home. The National Weather Service and Staffordshire County Council place an ice scraper in vehicle-preparation advice instead. That division is useful when buying: one tool protects access to the house, the other prepares a car window.

How to choose a snow shovel you can actually use
Start with the clearing area
List the surfaces you are likely to clear: the main entrance, steps, a path to bins or a garage, a driveway edge, and areas around downspouts or the foundation. A short, narrow route may require only repeated light pushes. A long driveway or several paths creates more handling time, so a shovel that feels acceptable for one porch can become tiring over a larger area.
Think about where the snow can go before you buy. You need room to push or place it without blocking the walking line, a doorway, a drain or a downspout. The shovel does not have to be large to be useful; a head that produces loads you can control is safer than one that encourages you to lift too much.
Match the handle to your height and reach
Derbyshire County Council’s Adverse Weather Guidance (2024) advises using a shovel that fits the user, with a comfortable height and head width. In a shop, hold the assembled shovel in your normal working position. You should be able to push without hunching excessively and reposition the load without stretching away from your body. If more than one person will clear snow, check that the person with the least strength or reach can use it safely; the shovel is a shared tool only if everyone can control it.
Keep weight within your capability
Empty-tool weight matters before snow is added. Wet snow is heavier to move than a light dusting, and a large head can tempt you to take a load you cannot lift comfortably. Pick the lightest shovel that still feels stable and durable enough for your surfaces. The evidence does not establish a single correct weight, so use a practical test: can you hold it, push it, and set down a partly loaded head without straining or losing balance?

- SNOW SHOVEL AND SHOW PUSHER: 18-in combination blade shape is ideal for shoveling and pushing snow
- DURABLE BLADE: Nylon wear strip prolongs blade life and does not cause damage to deck, patio and other ground surfaces
- ERGONOMIC HANDLE: Ergonomic handle for easier shoveling; 37.4 in. ergonomic handle for more comfortable shoveling
- OVERSIZED HANDLE: Oversized D-Grip handle for comfortable grip with gloved hands
Do not choose by a marketing claim that a particular material or construction is universally best. The reviewed public guidance does not compare brands, exact models, materials or a single optimum blade width for wet snow, deep snow or a particular property. Those decisions should follow your body, clearing area and local conditions rather than an unsupported ranking.
Prefer pushing and small loads
Use the shovel as a pusher whenever snow is loose and the surface allows it. When lifting is unavoidable, take a smaller load instead of trying to move a deep layer at once. Keep the load close to your body, and avoid twisting while throwing it. These handling points come directly from the Derbyshire guidance and the Canadian home-clearing advice; they reduce the leverage and sudden movements that make a manageable task harder.
- Push a light layer forward in short runs where possible.
- Break a deep or compacted section into smaller bites rather than filling the head to its limit.
- Keep both the shovel and its load close to your torso when lifting.
- Turn your feet and whole body to place snow; do not twist your trunk while throwing.
- Pause when your grip, balance or breathing deteriorates.

- Manageable empty weight: you can carry and manoeuvre it without fatigue.
- Head width and shape: the load is appropriate for your path and strength, with no assumption that the widest head is best.
- Intended task: it is sold and described for moving snow, not merely for sweeping light debris.
- Control: you can push, stop and set down a partly loaded shovel without the tool pulling you off balance.
What an ice scraper is—and where it belongs
An ice scraper is primarily a windshield tool. The National Weather Service includes a windshield scraper and brush in a winter survival kit, and Staffordshire County Council lists an ice scraper and de-icer among vehicle supplies. Keep that equipment in the car so you can clear windows before driving.

Do not plan to clear a home path with a small windshield scraper. It is too limited for moving snow and does not provide the surface treatment that an icy walkway needs. For the house, buy the snow shovel and the appropriate salt or traction material separately. This separation also avoids a common mistake: scraping a car window while leaving the entrance steps untreated.
Salt, sand and grit: choose by the hazard
When salt is the appropriate treatment
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says rock salt is the most commonly used grit and can stop ice forming and melt existing ice or snow. It advises gritting when frost, ice or snow is forecast, or when pedestrian walkways are likely to be damp or wet while temperatures are at or below freezing.
Salt is not instant. It needs moisture and time to dissolve into a brine that can act on the frozen surface. Heavy rain can wash it away, so a treatment applied before a downpour may no longer be present when temperatures fall. Check the path again after significant rain, fresh snow or heavy foot traffic rather than assuming one application lasts all day.
When sand or grit is the better choice
Sand, ash and other traction grit primarily give shoes something to grip. GOV.UK recommends salt where possible and says ash or sand can provide grip if salt is unavailable. Use traction material when the immediate problem is a slippery surface and you need mechanical grip, while recognising that it will not melt the ice in the way salt can.

Gloucestershire County Council’s snow-clearing guide cautions that salt does not remove snow or compacted ice. Clear what you can mechanically first, then apply the treatment that addresses the remaining risk. Excessive salt is unnecessary, wasteful and harmful to the environment, so more is not automatically safer.
Do not use one universal dose
Local recommendations vary with surface, weather and the product being used. Two official examples illustrate why a single number should not be presented as a universal specification:
| Local guidance | Example amount | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| West Lothian Council, Winter Service in West Lothian | About one tablespoon per square metre. | A local public-leaflet example, not a universal dose for every salt product or surface. |
| Gloucestershire County Council | A small handful for about one metre of surface. | Another local example; conditions and the wording of the local guide determine its use. |
Follow the packaging instructions for the product you bought and any advice from your local authority. Spread a thin, even treatment over the walking line instead of creating piles. If the label and local guidance differ, follow the label’s safety directions and the authority responsible for your area.

1. Identify the highest-risk sections first
Before picking up the shovel, walk the route and mark the entrance, steps, slopes and places that stay shaded or wet. HSE recommends identifying pedestrian areas most prone to ice; these commonly include entrances, sloped areas and damp or shaded locations. Heavily used sections deserve attention because repeated foot traffic can compact loose snow.

2. Work while snow is fresh
GOV.UK advises clearing early in the day, while snow is fresh and loose. Fresh snow is generally easier to push or lift than a layer compressed by feet, vehicles and later thawing. If you cannot clear everything, open the essential entrance and the safest route first, then return to less-used areas when your capability and conditions permit.
3. Move snow with controlled loads
Push rather than lift when the surface permits. For lifting, use small loads, keep them close and avoid twisting as you place them. Work within your capability and stop if the task becomes unstable or excessively strenuous. Do not turn a long driveway into one uninterrupted effort if short sections with rest breaks are safer.
4. Never pour water on snow or ice
GOV.UK specifically warns against using water to clear snow because it may refreeze. Water can leave a smoother, harder-to-see layer when temperatures drop. Use the shovel and an appropriate salt or traction treatment instead.
5. Apply treatment after mechanical clearing where feasible
Once loose snow is moved, choose salt for a de-icing objective or grit for traction. Salt can help with residual ice but does not replace removal of deep or compacted material. Apply sparingly according to the product label and local guidance, concentrating on the walking line, steps and slopes rather than covering every nearby surface.
6. Recheck changing conditions
Inspect the route after heavy rain, new precipitation, refreezing or substantial use. Rain can wash salt away, while passing feet can turn a thin layer of snow into a hard patch. Reapply only when the current condition justifies it; repeated handfuls without checking the surface create waste without guaranteeing safer footing.
Choosing between shovel, salt and grit in common situations
| Situation | First action | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh, loose snow on a path | Shovel early, using pushes or small loads. | Inspect for a remaining icy film and treat only if needed. |
| Snow compressed by foot traffic | Break up and remove what you can with the shovel. | Use salt for melting residual ice, or grit when immediate traction is the priority. |
| Frost forecast on a damp entrance | Identify the entrance and other pedestrian hotspots before temperatures fall. | Apply a suitable salt treatment in time for it to dissolve; check it again later. |
| Steep or shaded steps | Clear them early and work in small, controlled sections. | Give extra attention to grip with a suitable salt or traction material. |
| Heavy rain after salting | Inspect rather than assuming the treatment remains. | Re-treat only if ice risk persists and local/product guidance permits. |
| Salt unavailable | Remove loose snow mechanically. | Use sand, ash or traction grit to improve footing, understanding that it will not perform the same de-icing function as salt. |
Safety limits and when to get help
Snow clearing is a manual-handling task as well as a slip hazard. The Canadian guidance says people who cannot complete the work may seek help from a local professional, friend, family member or neighbour. That is a sensible option for anyone with limited strength, balance, mobility or medical restrictions, and for conditions that exceed the person’s equipment.
- Do not lift a load you cannot control from the ground to its destination.
- Do not twist while carrying or throwing snow.
- Stop if pain, dizziness, shortness of breath or loss of balance develops.
- Prioritise the entrance, steps and the route used most often rather than exhausting yourself on low-priority areas.
- Ask for assistance when snow is deep, compacted, repeatedly refreezing or spread across more area than you can safely manage.
The best purchase is therefore personal: a shovel that fits the user and can be handled repeatedly, plus a treatment selected for whether the problem is melting ice or improving traction. A separate windshield scraper completes the vehicle kit but should not be counted as home path equipment.
