Choose a smartphone by starting with your budget, required apps, accessibility needs, carrier, and how long you plan to keep it. Then verify the exact model’s network compatibility, compare total costs, and shortlist devices whose size, battery, camera, storage, and software support suit your daily use. There is no universal best phone: market, carrier, and model details matter.
What should you decide before comparing phones?
Write down the constraints that can rule out a phone before you compare specifications. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s guidance recommends establishing user needs, budget, supported software, and accessibility requirements before choosing a device. Its advice is written for organizations, but those criteria are useful for personal purchases too. Read the NCSC’s device-selection guidance.
- Total budget: Set a limit for the phone and the service plan, including any financing or contract commitments.
- Essential apps: Check that the apps you rely on are available and work on the platform you are considering.
- Accessibility: Note requirements such as text size, screen-reader support, hearing-aid compatibility, or controls that are easier to use.
- Handling and display: Decide what screen size and weight you can comfortably manage.
- Existing devices and services: List the computers, watches, accounts, and services you expect the phone to work with.
- Carrier and coverage: Identify your intended carrier and the places where you need reliable service.
- Ownership period: Estimate how long you intend to use the phone before replacing it.
Which operating system and ecosystem should you choose?
Start with your required apps and the devices and services you already use, rather than assuming one operating system is best for everyone. Apple’s iPhone may fit naturally if you already use Apple devices. Android gives shoppers a choice of manufacturers and hardware, but features and availability vary by model and region. Before settling on a platform, confirm that your must-have apps are supported and check how well the phone will work with your existing devices and services. If you depend on a specific accessibility feature or accessory, verify compatibility for the exact phone rather than relying on the platform name alone.

How can you confirm a phone will work with your carrier?
Check the exact model number and regional variant against the intended carrier’s supported network bands and services. A phone with a familiar product name may have different versions for different markets, and compatibility can differ between them. Also check coverage where you actually use the phone; a technically compatible device cannot compensate for weak local coverage.
- Find the complete model number and region or market version for the phone you plan to buy.
- Check the carrier’s compatibility information for that model, including supported bands and services.
- Confirm that the carrier provides coverage in your home, workplace, and other places where you need service.
- If the listing or carrier information does not identify the variant clearly, ask the seller or carrier to confirm before purchasing.

How should you compare buying outright with a phone plan?
Compare the cost across the whole period you would pay, not just the device’s upfront price or a plan’s monthly figure. Include the phone price, service charges, financing period, and any contract terms. CHOICE describes outright purchase and plans commonly paid over a fixed term; the specific terms and prices depend on the market and offer. - Outright purchase: Add the phone price to the service cost over the period you expect to use it.
- Purchase through a plan: Add all device payments and service charges over the full term, and check any contract conditions.
- Compare equivalent service: Make sure the plans provide the coverage and service you need before treating their totals as comparable.
Use current prices and terms for your own country and carrier. A lower monthly payment does not by itself establish a lower total cost.
Which features matter most in everyday use?
Prioritize features according to what you do with your phone. A headline specification cannot establish that one model will suit you better without comparable evidence and your own use case.
Screen size, weight, and accessibility
Choose a size and weight you can comfortably handle. If possible, try a shortlisted phone in person: test one-handed reach, reading comfort, keyboard use, and the accessibility settings you depend on. A larger display may help readability but can be harder to hold or operate one-handed.

Battery life
Compare battery results only when the testing conditions are similar. Estimates depend on the test setup and on individual use, so a capacity figure or a single advertised duration is not a reliable promise of how long your phone will last. Google’s Android chooser explicitly qualifies battery estimates by test setup and use. Review the Android chooser’s battery and device information.
Camera
Match camera capabilities to what you photograph: for example, people, moving subjects, low-light scenes, or video. Do not treat megapixel counts alone as proof of better photos; they do not establish comparative image quality for your use.
Storage and performance
Estimate how much space your apps, photos, videos, and downloads need, and choose storage accordingly. For performance, consider the work and games you actually run. Processor names by themselves do not show how two phones compare in real-world tasks.

Durability and water resistance
Check the exact model’s stated durability and water-resistance terms, along with the conditions and limitations attached to them. A resistance rating does not mean a phone is waterproof, and resistance can diminish over time.
Samsung’s selection guide also prompts shoppers to consider screen size, storage, camera, battery, and product category. How important is software support if you plan to keep the phone?
Check the support commitment for the exact model and compare its end date or promised duration with your intended ownership period. The NCSC’s “Choosing devices” guidance, published 29 June 2021 and reviewed 13 May 2025, states: “You should ensure that the device will be supported by the manufacturer for the entire time you intend to use it.” Its guidance is aimed at organizations, but the support-lifecycle principle applies to anyone planning to keep a phone for years.

For Android devices, consider how the manufacturer delivers updates as well as the promised support period. Google Play Protect certification is a useful baseline: Google says shoppers should look for the Play Protect logo to help ensure a device comes with Play Protect’s security benefits. Certification indicates Google verification; an uncertified device has not received the same verification. Read about Google Play Protect certified devices.
How do you turn your priorities into a shortlist?
- Set your constraints. Record your budget, essential apps, accessibility needs, preferred handling, ecosystem, carrier, and expected ownership period.
- Remove platform mismatches. Keep only phones that support your required apps and work with the devices or services you rely on.
- Verify the exact network variant. Match the full model number to your carrier’s supported bands and services, then consider coverage where you use the phone.
- Compare full-term cost. Calculate the phone and service costs across the entire payment or contract period using current local terms.
- Compare daily-use features. Assess handling, battery tests under comparable conditions, camera suitability, storage, performance, and durability terms against your own needs.
- Check support and try finalists. Confirm the model’s software-support commitment and, where possible, test the phone’s reach, readability, weight, keyboard, and accessibility options.
For a useful shortlist, treat unresolved basics—such as an unclear model variant, unconfirmed carrier compatibility, missing support information, or an app you cannot verify—as questions to answer before buying, not details to guess.
