For a compact TV setup, start by measuring the space under your screen and checking which audio outputs your TV has. The Yamaha SR-C20A is a specification-based fit if you want a short bar with built-in bass; the Bose TV Speaker (2nd Gen) is similarly narrow and offers Dialogue Mode; Sonos Ray requires an optical TV connection; and Polk Signa S2 includes a separate wireless subwoofer that needs its own floor or shelf space. These are matches to different needs, not a sound-quality ranking.
Measure the space and check the TV connection first
“Small” is not a standard soundbar size. Measure the usable width, height, and depth where the bar will sit, including any overhang or stand. Leave room for cables and controls, and make sure the bar will not cover the TV’s infrared receiver or screen edge.
Then check the TV’s audio outputs. HDMI ARC uses the TV’s ARC-labeled HDMI port and can simplify the connection and TV-remote control when both TV and soundbar support the relevant behavior. Optical is another digital audio connection; a soundbar that requires it will not suit a TV installation without a usable optical output. Check the TV audio-output settings if sound does not play after connecting.
Compact soundbar shortlist
| Model | Published size or bass arrangement | TV connection and dialogue feature | Best fit by specification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamaha SR-C20A | 23-5/8 × 2-1/2 × 3-3/4 inches (width × height × depth) when placed in front of a TV; built-in subwoofer. | HDMI ARC, digital optical, and auxiliary connections; Clear Voice. | A short bar with bass built into the unit, avoiding the need to place a separate subwoofer. Yamaha specifications and product page. |
| Bose TV Speaker (2nd Gen) | 2.244 inches high × 23.465 inches wide × 4.154 inches deep. | HDMI or optical audio connection; Dialogue Mode. | A compact bar with a named speech feature. Confirm you are looking at the second-generation model, not the separately listed first-generation Bose TV Speaker. Bose TV Speaker (2nd Gen) product page. |
| Sonos Ray | Described by Sonos as a small TV and gaming soundbar; the cited page does not provide dimensions here. | Setup instructions specify an optical TV connection; Speech Enhancement. | A candidate when the TV has optical output and Sonos features matter. Do not assume HDMI ARC compatibility. Sonos Ray product page. |
| Polk Signa S2 | Low-profile bar sold with a separate wireless subwoofer; plan for the subwoofer’s placement as well as the bar. | HDMI ARC; VoiceAdjust and Night Mode. | A candidate if you want the included separate subwoofer and have room for it. Polk lists a total frequency response of 45 Hz–20,000 Hz; this is a manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement. Polk Signa S2 product page. |
Yamaha describes the SR-C20A as having “Simple setup with HDMI®, optical or aux connections.” That is Yamaha’s product-page wording about connection choices, not independent evidence that setup is easier than with other models.

Match the choice to your room and priorities
Choose by bar footprint
Among the models with dimensions stated here, the Yamaha SR-C20A is 23-5/8 inches wide and the Bose TV Speaker (2nd Gen) is 23.465 inches wide. Those figures are close, so measure the available space rather than relying on a “compact” label. The cited Sonos and Polk pages do not establish comparable bar dimensions in this material.
Choose by bass arrangement
The Yamaha has a built-in subwoofer, so its published configuration does not require a separate subwoofer unit. The Polk Signa S2 includes a wireless subwoofer, which adds a second piece of equipment to position. Make sure it can sit without blocking a walkway or taking space you do not have.

Choose by dialogue feature
The manufacturers give their features different names: Yamaha Clear Voice, Bose Dialogue Mode, Sonos Speech Enhancement, and Polk VoiceAdjust. Treat these as available processing features, not a guarantee that every voice will become clearer in every room or for every listener. If dialogue intelligibility is a priority, check the controls available on the exact model and assess whether the result works for you.
Choose by TV output and ecosystem
If your TV has a suitable ARC-labeled HDMI port and you want an HDMI connection, the Yamaha and Polk pages list HDMI ARC, while Bose describes HDMI audio connection. Sonos Ray’s cited setup instructions specify optical, making the TV’s optical output a key compatibility check. If app or ecosystem features matter, confirm the exact model’s current capabilities on its official product page rather than inferring them from the brand.

What these specifications can—and cannot—tell you
The dimensions, connection lists, bass configurations, and feature names above are manufacturer-published information. They help screen for fit and compatibility, but do not establish that one soundbar sounds better, plays louder, or produces more convincing surround sound than another. The cited material also does not provide a controlled cross-brand test or independent lab measurements.
A compact cabinet alone does not establish support for Dolby Atmos or any other surround format. If a particular format or output level matters to you, verify it in the exact model’s current specification and seek independent testing that directly compares the candidates under stated conditions.
