Choose a multi-GPU server by workload scale and communication pattern before comparing GPU counts. A PCIe GPU server is usually the flexible choice for a single node or scale-out fleet. An HGX platform is designed for tightly coupled multi-GPU training and inference that can exploit NVLink and NVSwitch. If a job spans servers, the compute fabric, NIC layout and switch design become as important as the GPUs. Then validate CPU and PCIe balance, host memory, storage, power, cooling, support and regional availability against the exact OEM configuration.

Start with the workload, not the GPU count

The same number of GPUs can produce very different server requirements. A model-serving node handling independent requests has a different communication pattern from distributed training in which every GPU exchanges gradients repeatedly. Data preprocessing may be limited by CPU, memory or storage rather than accelerator throughput.

Classify the job

  • Single-node inference: the model and target concurrency fit inside one server. GPU memory capacity, request isolation, host-to-GPU data movement and storage latency usually matter more than a cluster fabric.
  • Fine-tuning or training on one node: several GPUs share a server, and the efficiency of GPU-to-GPU communication becomes important when the framework synchronizes frequently.
  • Distributed training: workers run on multiple servers. The design must include a dedicated, compatible compute network and a topology that avoids bottlenecks between GPUs and NICs.
  • Distributed inference: model parallelism, expert routing or high request volume may require multiple nodes. Confirm whether traffic is mostly GPU-to-GPU, GPU-to-storage or client-facing before selecting network adapters.
  • Data preparation and pipelines: CPU cores, system memory, local scratch space and ingress bandwidth can determine utilization even when the GPU specification looks sufficient.

NVIDIA’s NVIDIA-Certified Systems Configuration Guide puts the principle plainly: “Optimal PCIe server configurations depend on the target workloads (or applications) for each server and will vary on a case-by-case basis.” Treat that as a design rule, not as a reason to buy the largest available node.

Decide whether the workload fits in one node

Single-node deployment

NVIDIA defines a single-node workload as one that allocates resources within a single server or workstation, including jobs that use multiple GPUs in that server. Such a deployment normally does not need high-speed networking to connect several servers for the AI job. It can still require ordinary networking for storage, management, users or other applications.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A single node is simpler to operate: there is no distributed scheduler or inter-node failure domain, and data does not cross a cluster fabric during every synchronization step. It can also be easier to place in a smaller rack or lab, subject to the chassis power and cooling requirements.

Clustered deployment

A clustered workload distributes resources across servers connected by a high-speed fabric such as InfiniBand or RoCE. The software stack, NIC mode, switch topology and traffic pattern must be designed together. A server that is excellent for isolated inference can be a poor distributed-training worker if its GPUs cannot reach the network adapters at the required rate.

Make this decision before choosing a platform family. If the model, batch size and concurrency fit within one node, a cluster fabric may add cost and operational complexity without helping the application. If the job must span nodes, specify the fabric and per-GPU path at the start of the procurement process.

PCIe versus HGX: the architectural choice

Decision factor PCIe multi-GPU server HGX scale-up system
Primary use Configurable single-node systems and scale-out nodes for applications that support PCIe GPUs. Tightly coupled multi-GPU training, inference and accelerated computing that benefit from an integrated GPU interconnect.
GPU configurations NVIDIA’s certified PCIe reference directory lists two-, four- and eight-GPU configurations. NVIDIA’s cited HGX H100/H200/B200 references cover four- and eight-GPU configurations; the reference design uses eight GPUs.
GPU-to-GPU path PCIe topology; performance depends on generation, lane allocation, root-port placement and software traffic. NVLink/NVSwitch integrated into the platform.
Expansion approach Useful when accelerator count, card type or network-adapter mix may change between nodes. Optimized as a coordinated baseboard and server design rather than a collection of independent cards.
Inter-node networking Required when jobs span servers; adapter count and GPU-to-NIC placement must be checked. Also required for multi-node jobs; the HGX reference architecture specifies a high-bandwidth compute fabric.
Certification evidence Certified combinations identify tested CPU, GPU and adapter arrangements, not equal performance for every application. Certified HGX systems identify tested OEM platforms and GPU/network combinations; verify the exact current listing.

The distinction is not simply “cheap versus expensive” or “few GPUs versus many.” PCIe gives the system builder more freedom to select cards and scale out. HGX gives tightly coupled GPUs a purpose-built communication fabric. Choose the architecture that matches the communication pattern your software actually uses.

How to size a PCIe multi-GPU server

Verify the chassis and card layout

Start with the exact accelerator model, physical dimensions, auxiliary power connectors, airflow direction and slot spacing. Confirm that every selected card fits without blocking adjacent slots and that the chassis supports the required number of double-width or other form-factor accelerators. Do not infer physical support from a generic “eight-GPU” label; card cooling and power arrangements differ.

Check the PCIe generation and lane width delivered to each slot. A slot that is mechanically long but electrically under-connected can become a bottleneck. Map each GPU to its CPU socket and root complex, and ask the OEM for the topology diagram. Balanced placement across sockets and root ports is especially important when several GPUs transfer data simultaneously.

Size CPU resources around the GPUs

NVIDIA’s starting guidance is at least six physical CPU cores per GPU. For eight GPUs, that implies at least 48 physical cores before accounting for operating-system services, data loading, compression, orchestration or preprocessing. This is guidance rather than a universal requirement: a lightweight inference service may need less, while a data-heavy pipeline may need more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the actual CPU socket count, core count, memory channels and PCIe root-port arrangement in the candidate system. A high core total is not enough if the sockets cannot provide balanced PCIe access or if the workload’s data loaders are pinned to a remote NUMA domain.

Size host memory deliberately

NVIDIA recommends system RAM of at least twice the total GPU memory as a starting point. If eight accelerators provide a combined 640 GB of device memory, that rule of thumb points to at least 1.28 TB of system RAM. The figure is not a benchmark or an invariant: model staging, dataset caching, checkpointing and preprocessing can move the requirement up or down.

Populate memory evenly across CPU sockets and memory channels. Uneven population can reduce bandwidth or leave one socket starved while another has idle capacity. Confirm supported DIMM capacities, speed at the planned population and the maximum memory the motherboard firmware supports.

Use certification listings as a shortlist

NVIDIA’s certification directory describes PCIe Optimized Reference Configurations as scale-out nodes and lists two-, four- and eight-GPU systems. Its naming pattern includes CPU count, GPU count, network-adapter count and average per-GPU network bandwidth. For example, a 2-8-5-200 pattern means two CPUs, eight PCIe GPUs, five network adapters and 200 Gb/s average GPU network bandwidth.

Concrete PCIe example

Dell’s PowerEdge XE7740/XE7745 is an example of a two-socket 4U AI server described as supporting eight PCIe accelerators. Dell’s reviewed worker-node configuration recommends at least 1 TB of memory for an eight-GPU system and lists local NVMe for datasets, containers, temporary data and model artifacts. These are recommendations for that configuration; another chassis may have different limits and requirements. See the Dell GPU worker-node configuration for the cited details.

When an HGX scale-up system is the better fit

Look for communication-heavy jobs

HGX is intended for workloads in which GPUs exchange substantial data inside one server. NVIDIA’s HGX H100/H200/B200 reference architecture specifies 900 GB/s of GPU-to-GPU bandwidth for the cited H100 and H200 eight-GPU baseboards and 1,800 GB/s for the cited B200 eight-GPU baseboard. These are vendor specifications for the platform interconnect, not guaranteed application throughput.

Choose this architecture when your framework and parallelism strategy can use the integrated NVLink/NVSwitch path. If the workload mostly runs independent inference processes, the extra scale-up capability may not offset the platform’s cost, power and integration requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the supported configurations

NVIDIA says the cited H100, H200 and B200 reference systems are available in four- and eight-GPU configurations, while its reference design uses eight GPUs. The HGX H100/H200/B200 component guide describes the associated networking and system design.

The NVIDIA certification directory lists tested OEM HGX systems and configurations for H100, H200, B200 and B300, including examples from Dell, HPE, Lenovo and Supermicro. Check the live listing for the exact server model, GPU type, adapter count and operating mode; a certification for one combination does not certify every variant.

Account for newer B300 designs separately

NVIDIA’s HGX B300 reference describes an eight-GPU Blackwell baseboard with the GPUs connected internally by NVLink and an external network interface of 800 Gb/s per GPU using ConnectX-8. NVIDIA also discusses adjusting B300 configurations to cluster requirements and the storage and networking implications for distributed inference.

Design the compute fabric for multi-node jobs

Plan one GPU-to-network path per accelerator where required

For H100, H200 and B200 HGX multi-node systems, NVIDIA recommends accommodating one NIC per GPU. The same reference gives a minimum compute-network bandwidth above 200 GB/s and recommends 400 GB/s total for the cited eight-GPU server design. These numbers describe reference architecture guidance; the supported adapter models, operating modes and switch requirements still need confirmation.

Ask the integrator to document which GPU reaches which NIC, whether traffic crosses CPU sockets, the number of uplinks per switch and the oversubscription ratio. A nominally fast adapter cannot compensate for an imbalanced topology or a switch fabric that is saturated by storage and management traffic.

Match the fabric to the software

Confirm whether the framework uses InfiniBand verbs, RoCE, a vendor collective-communication library or another transport. RoCE deployments need a correctly engineered lossless or near-lossless configuration, including queueing and congestion controls appropriate to the design. InfiniBand deployments require compatible host adapters, switches, firmware and management tools.

Specify message sizes, synchronization frequency, expected concurrent jobs and whether storage traffic shares the same fabric. A fabric sized for one eight-GPU training job may behave differently when several jobs compete for links.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not overlook storage and host data paths

Local NVMe can provide scratch space for datasets, containers, temporary files, checkpoints and model artifacts. The Dell example explicitly lists these uses, but the right capacity and endurance depend on your pipeline. Separate high-write scratch from durable model storage when checkpoint frequency or preprocessing creates sustained writes.

Document the path from storage to CPU memory and GPU memory. Check the number of drive bays, supported NVMe backplanes, RAID or software-defined storage options, boot-device redundancy and network-attached storage bandwidth. If multiple GPUs read the same dataset, verify that the storage subsystem and PCIe switches can feed them concurrently rather than testing only one reader.

Also account for operating-system images, container layers, logs, checkpoints and recovery copies. Storage capacity is a workload variable, so no universal capacity figure can be inferred from GPU count alone.

Validate power, cooling, rack and support requirements

There is no single wattage or cooling formula that applies to every multi-GPU server. GPU model, card power limit, CPU choice, memory population, drive count, fan policy, inlet temperature and workload duty cycle all change facility requirements. Request the exact chassis-level power draw, PSU redundancy mode, heat output, airflow direction, allowable inlet temperature, acoustic limits and rack dimensions from the OEM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that the data-center circuits, PDUs, floor loading, rack depth and cable paths can support the configured system. Ask whether the quoted power is a maximum, a sustained design value or a typical estimate, and whether the figures assume a particular GPU power cap.

Support terms matter as much as component specifications. Obtain response times, on-site replacement coverage, firmware ownership, GPU and NIC diagnostic procedures, spare-part policy and the process for updating drivers and system firmware. Verify regional stock and lead time for the exact configuration rather than relying on a family-level product page.

A practical procurement workflow

  1. Write the workload profile. Record model size, precision, GPU-memory requirement, batch or request concurrency, sequence length, checkpoint frequency, preprocessing load and whether the job is single-node or distributed.
  2. Set the scaling boundary. Decide whether the largest expected job must fit in one node. If not, define the number of nodes, expected GPU-to-GPU traffic and the required compute fabric.
  3. Choose the platform class. Shortlist PCIe systems for flexible card counts and scale-out nodes; shortlist HGX when tightly coupled GPU communication is central to the workload.
  4. Build the topology map. For every GPU, record its PCIe root port or NVLink relationship, CPU socket, NUMA locality, NIC and switch path. Reject configurations with undocumented or visibly imbalanced paths.
  5. Apply sizing checks. Use NVIDIA’s six-physical-cores-per-GPU and two-times-total-GPU-memory guidance as starting points, then adjust for data loading, storage and orchestration. Check memory-channel population and PCIe lane availability.
  6. Specify the fabric. For multi-node work, identify InfiniBand or RoCE, NIC model and mode, per-GPU adapter mapping, switch radix, uplinks, oversubscription and firmware compatibility. Compare the design with the 400 GB/s total compute-network recommendation where the cited HGX reference applies.
  7. Verify storage and facility fit. Request NVMe layout, endurance, boot redundancy, power, cooling, rack, PDU and inlet-temperature requirements for the exact bill of materials.
  8. Check certification and OEM documentation. Use the NVIDIA Certified Systems listings and the detailed certification pages to identify tested combinations, then obtain system-specific documentation from the supplier.
  9. Run a representative acceptance test. Test the real model, framework, precision, batch or concurrency target, storage path and distributed communication pattern. Vendor bandwidth figures should not be converted into expected tokens per second or training time without workload-specific measurements.
  10. Document the production configuration. Record firmware, driver, CUDA or other runtime versions, NIC settings, topology, power limits, monitoring points and rollback procedures so that replacement nodes remain equivalent.

Examples of configuration decisions

Independent inference services on one server

If each request can be assigned to one GPU and the model fits within one node, a PCIe server may provide the needed flexibility. Prioritize GPU memory, card fit, balanced PCIe access, sufficient CPU and RAM for preprocessing, and local NVMe or network storage sized for containers and model artifacts. A high-speed inter-node fabric is not central unless the serving design shards a model across servers.

Communication-heavy eight-GPU training

If one training job uses all eight GPUs and performs frequent collective operations, compare a PCIe node with an HGX design rather than comparing GPU counts alone. The HGX H100/H200 reference cites 900 GB/s GPU-to-GPU bandwidth, while the cited B200 reference lists 1,800 GB/s. Treat those values as platform specifications and validate the actual framework scaling with a representative test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Training across several eight-GPU servers

For a distributed job, combine the intra-node choice with a fabric plan. The cited HGX guidance recommends one NIC per GPU and 400 GB/s total compute-network bandwidth for its eight-GPU design. Confirm switch topology, NIC operating mode, software support and storage traffic before ordering nodes; otherwise the cluster can be limited by communication even when each server is well configured internally.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Buying by GPU count alone: Check memory capacity, PCIe lanes, CPU locality, NIC paths, storage and facility limits.
  • Assuming every eight-GPU server is equivalent: Card spacing, power delivery, root-port topology and cooling differ by chassis and GPU model.
  • Treating vendor bandwidth as application performance: 900 GB/s, 1,800 GB/s and 400 GB/s are reference specifications, not promises of tokens per second, training time or scaling efficiency.
  • Ignoring NUMA placement: Ask for a topology diagram and place CPU threads, memory and NICs close to the GPUs that use them.
  • Adding a cluster fabric late: Distributed training requires compatible NICs, switches, firmware, transport settings and software from the beginning.
  • Using certification as a blanket guarantee: A certified combination is evidence that a tested system exists; it does not prove equal results for every model or framework.
  • Underestimating facility work: Obtain chassis-specific power, cooling, rack and PDU requirements before committing to a deployment location.
  • Leaving regional availability until the end: Lead times, support coverage and inventory can differ by country and exact GPU or NIC combination.

Final decision rule

Choose a PCIe server when you need configurable accelerators, independent workloads or a scale-out node design and can provide balanced CPU, memory, PCIe and networking resources. Choose HGX when the software benefits from tightly coupled GPUs connected through NVLink/NVSwitch and the integrated platform fits your power, cooling and budget envelope. Choose a cluster only when the workload must cross server boundaries, and design the compute fabric, NIC mapping and storage paths as part of the same system. In every case, make the final purchase decision from the exact OEM bill of materials and a workload-representative validation test, not from a GPU-count headline.
