Choose a self-tanner by matching its format to the areas you plan to cover and by checking that you can follow its label directions and exposure precautions. Most sunless tanners use dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a color additive that darkens the outer skin temporarily; it does not create a UV tan or automatically protect you from the sun. For an even result, prepare dry skin, apply in sections, and keep sunscreen in your routine.

What self-tanner does—and what it does not do

Dihydroxyacetone, usually shortened to DHA, is a common color additive in sunless tanners. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains that DHA reacts with amino acids at the skin’s surface, darkening the outer skin cells. The visible color is temporary and typically lasts several days. The FDA describes sunless tanning as a faux glow created by coating the skin with DHA; it is not a UV tan.

That surface color is different from a tan produced by ultraviolet (UV) exposure. A self-tanner’s color does not mean your skin is protected from UV rays. Most sunless tanning lotions and sprays do not contain sunscreen. A product offers sun protection only if it contains sunscreen ingredients and is labeled with an SPF.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some products add temporary color that washes off. The FDA notes that “bronzer” is not a legally defined product category; the word commonly refers to temporary color products such as tinted moisturizers or powders. A washable bronzer is not the same thing as a DHA self-tanner, whose color develops through a reaction at the skin surface. If a product is described as a bronzer, check what the label says it is and how it is meant to be used rather than assuming it works like a DHA product.

How to choose a self-tanner

There is no universally best format established by FDA and American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) guidance. The sources identify lotions, creams, and sprays, but do not provide head-to-head testing showing that one format is more even, lasts longer, or is safer in every situation. Make the choice based on the area you want to cover, how you prefer to apply product, and whether you can control exposure as the label requires.

A useful way to decide is to ask three questions before buying: What area do I want to apply it to? Which format can I handle deliberately over that area? Can I follow this product’s directions and, if it is a spray or mist, avoid inhaling it and getting it on sensitive areas? The answers point to a practical fit without assuming that a format alone guarantees a particular result.

Choose by application area and handling

  • For a smaller area: Consider whether the product’s consistency and packaging will let you apply it carefully to the area you intend to treat. Work in sections and use circular motions, as the AAD advises; no format guarantees an even result.
  • For larger areas: Think about which format you can spread or handle consistently across sections such as your arms, legs, and torso. Follow the product’s label because application directions may differ. Being able to work systematically matters more than choosing a format based on an unsupported promise of speed or coverage.
  • If you are considering a spray or mist: Exposure control is especially important. DHA is intended for external application; take care not to inhale or ingest it, or get it on your eyes, lips, or other mucous membranes.

The FDA lists lotions, creams, and sprays as forms of self-tanner. Those categories tell you how a product is presented, not how well it will perform compared with another format. Choose based on practical handling and the precautions you can follow rather than assuming a particular format is inherently superior.

Format or product type What the guidance establishes How to decide
Lotion Lotions are one of the forms in which sunless tanners are sold; most sunless tanning lotions do not contain sunscreen. Check its directions and consider whether you can apply it to your intended areas in sections.
Cream Creams are another recognized format. The FDA and AAD guidance does not establish that creams outperform other formats. Choose only if you are comfortable handling it according to its label; do not infer better results from the format name.
Spray or mist Sprays are a recognized form, and exposure precautions are particularly important when applying a product that can become airborne. Be confident you can avoid inhaling it and keep it away from eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. Follow the label carefully.
Bronzer The term is not legally defined and commonly refers to temporary color, such as tinted moisturizer or powder, that washes off. Do not treat it as interchangeable with a DHA self-tanner; check the product description and directions.

This is a handling comparison, not a performance ranking. FDA and AAD guidance does not establish a universally safer format, a guaranteed duration for one format over another, or which format will look most even on a particular person. If a product makes a result claim, use its label as the source for its own directions, not as proof that every product in that format behaves the same way.

Check the ingredient list and label

Look for the product’s current ingredient list and directions. DHA is a common active color additive, but other ingredients vary by product. The available guidance does not establish a ranking of added ingredients by quality, safety, irritation potential, or tanning performance, so do not treat a particular ingredient name or marketing description as proof that a product is better for you.

Terms such as “natural” or “organic” do not, on their own, establish that a self-tanner is safer. Ingredient lists are product-specific, so make decisions using the label for the exact product you are considering rather than generalizing from a category. If you have an individual medical concern or experience an unexpected reaction, consult a qualified health professional rather than trying to diagnose the cause from the product category alone.

Read the instructions before applying. The FDA advises following product-label directions carefully, and directions can vary by product. If a label includes specific restrictions or handling steps, use those rather than assuming all self-tanners are applied in exactly the same way. The application sequence below reflects AAD consumer guidance; it does not replace additional instructions on a product’s own label.

Also distinguish a color additive from sun protection when reading a package. DHA explains the color-changing purpose of a sunless tanner, but it is not evidence that the product contains sunscreen. If sun protection is relevant, check whether sunscreen ingredients and an SPF are actually listed on the product.

Use the exposure precautions to decide whether a spray suits you

The FDA restricts cosmetic DHA to external application. Do not inhale or ingest it, and do not apply it to mucous membranes, including the lips or the area in and around the eyes. With a spray or mist, take particular care to prevent product from reaching those areas and to avoid breathing it in. If you cannot control that exposure while applying a product, choose a format you can handle more carefully.

These precautions are not just a comparison point between packages: they are part of using a DHA product as directed. The FDA’s guidance about spray-tan exposure emphasizes avoiding contact with mucous membranes and inhalation. Do not direct product toward the face or treat the spray as something to breathe in. Follow the instructions and restrictions for the exact product you have.

How to apply self-tanner evenly

The AAD recommends a deliberate, section-by-section method. Prepare your skin first, work systematically, and take extra care with joints, where product can collect or appear more concentrated. These steps aim to help with even coverage; they do not promise a specific color or result.

  1. Exfoliate. Use a washcloth or an exfoliating product before application. Give extra attention to the thicker skin on your elbows, knees, and ankles. This is preparation, not a reason to scrub aggressively; follow the AAD’s basic advice and product directions.
  2. Dry your skin. Apply the self-tanner to dry skin. Pause after washing or exfoliating until the skin is dry, so you can follow this part of the application guidance.
  3. Work in sections. For example, apply to your arms, then legs, then torso. Massage the product in with circular motions. Taking one section at a time gives you a clear sequence to follow and makes it easier to remember where you have applied it.
  4. Wash your hands after each section. Use soap and water when you finish each section to help avoid stained palms. Do not leave this until the end of the whole application if you are following the AAD’s section-by-section method.
  5. Blend at wrists and ankles. Lightly blend the product toward your hands and feet so the transition is less abrupt. The AAD advises a light blend at these boundaries rather than treating them exactly like the larger sections.
  6. Reduce buildup on joints. On elbows, knees, and ankles, lightly rub with a damp towel or apply a thin layer of lotion over the self-tanner, following the AAD’s advice. These areas have thicker skin, so the guidance specifically calls for extra attention there.
  7. Let the skin dry before dressing. Wait at least 10 minutes before putting on clothes. For the next three hours, wear loose clothing and try to avoid sweating.
  8. Continue sun protection. Use sunscreen as appropriate; a self-tanned appearance is not evidence of UV protection. For sunscreen guidance, the AAD recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher.

An application mitt is an optional convenience for spreading product across sections. The AAD’s instructions support applying in sections and using circular motions; they do not say a mitt is required or that it produces a better result. If you want to shop for one, “self-tanner application mitt” or “tanning mitt” describes the accessory, but choosing a mitt is optional and does not replace the application steps.

A simple way to keep the sequence straight is to prepare, apply, blend, and wait: exfoliate and dry; apply section by section in circular motions; wash hands and soften transitions at wrists, ankles, and joints; then allow the skin to dry before dressing. Keep the label nearby if its directions add product-specific steps. This approach stays within the AAD’s advice without relying on a tool or format to do the work for you.

Does self-tanner protect you from the sun?

No—not unless the particular product also contains sunscreen ingredients and is labeled with an SPF. FDA guidance notes that most sunless tanning sprays and lotions do not contain sunscreen. Do not use the visible tan as a substitute for sun protection, and do not assume a product provides SPF protection because it is called a self-tanner.

The AAD recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Check sunscreen labeling and follow its directions, including any instructions for reapplication. The Academy presents self-tanner as an option for people who want a tanned appearance while continuing to protect their skin; it also states that tanning from UV exposure damages skin. Its skin-cancer prevention page, updated August 15, 2025, encourages sun protection regardless of whether someone uses self-tanner.

In practical terms, treat the self-tanner and sunscreen as separate choices unless a product is specifically labeled with sunscreen ingredients and an SPF. A color change is not a measure of UV protection. For a separate sunscreen, follow its label and the AAD’s guidance on broad spectrum, water resistance, and SPF 30 or higher.

Common selection and application mistakes

  • Choosing a format based on unsupported performance promises: FDA and AAD guidance does not establish that lotions, creams, or sprays universally give a better or longer-lasting result. Choose one you can apply carefully and use according to its label.
  • Treating DHA as sunscreen: DHA changes surface color; it does not automatically provide UV protection. Look for sunscreen ingredients and an SPF label if you expect a product to offer sun protection.
  • Ignoring spray exposure: Avoid inhalation, ingestion, and contact with eyes, lips, and other mucous membranes. These precautions matter particularly when using a spray or mist.
  • Applying without preparation or a plan: The AAD’s method is to exfoliate, dry the skin, apply in sections with circular motions, and handle joints and transitions deliberately.
  • Skipping the wait after application: Dressing before the skin has dried skips the AAD’s recommendation to wait at least 10 minutes. For the next three hours, it advises loose clothing and trying to avoid sweating.
  • Assuming a mitt is essential: It may be useful for spreading product, but the AAD does not require one or claim that it improves results.
  • Assuming “bronzer” means DHA self-tanner: Bronzer commonly refers to temporary color that washes off; the term is not a legally defined category.
  • Trusting broad marketing language over the label: “Natural” or “organic” wording does not establish that a product is safer, and one product’s directions may differ from another’s. Check the current ingredient list and directions for the product you plan to use.

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply self-tanner evenly?

Follow the AAD’s sequence: exfoliate, dry the skin, apply in sections using circular motions, and wash your hands with soap and water after each section. Lightly blend at wrists and ankles, and use a damp towel or a thin layer of lotion to reduce buildup on elbows, knees, and ankles. Wait at least 10 minutes before dressing, then wear loose clothing and try to avoid sweating for three hours.

Which self-tanner format should I use?

Choose the format you can handle carefully for the area you want to cover and whose label directions you can follow. FDA guidance identifies lotions, creams, and sprays, but does not establish that one is universally more effective, longer-lasting, more even, or safer. If considering a spray or mist, account for the extra care needed to avoid inhalation and contact with eyes, lips, or mucous membranes.

Does self-tanner protect you from the sun?

Not by itself. Most sunless tanning sprays and lotions do not contain sunscreen, and DHA’s color effect is not UV protection. A product offers sun protection only if it contains sunscreen ingredients and is labeled with an SPF. The AAD recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

What does DHA do in self-tanner?

DHA is a common color additive in sunless tanners. It reacts with amino acids at the skin surface and darkens the outer skin cells, creating temporary color that typically lasts several days. It is intended for external application and should not be inhaled or ingested or applied to mucous membranes.

Is a tanning mitt necessary?

No. An application mitt can be an optional convenience for spreading product across sections, but AAD guidance does not require one or say it improves results. Apply according to the product label and use the section-by-section method whether or not you use an accessory.

Is bronzer the same as self-tanner?

Not necessarily. The FDA says “bronzer” is not a legally defined category and commonly refers to temporary color, such as tinted moisturizer or powder, that washes off. DHA self-tanner creates color through a reaction at the skin surface. Check the specific product’s label rather than assuming the terms mean the same thing.

The Bottom Line

Choose a self-tanner by the areas you want to cover, the format you can handle carefully, and the product’s directions—not by assuming one format always performs best. DHA darkens the skin’s surface temporarily, not as a UV tan. Exfoliate, dry, apply in sections, blend carefully, and maintain sun protection: a self-tan is not sunscreen.
