Choose a router with WPA3 Personal, a written security-update commitment that applies to its exact model and hardware revision in your country, and a secure update process with automatic updates or clear notifications. Check the manufacturer’s end-of-life (EOL) information before buying; a newer Wi-Fi generation does not guarantee longer security support. Once installed, update the firmware, change the default passwords and disable remote management, WPS and UPnP if you do not need them.
Start with the support promise, not the Wi-Fi generation
A router is a security product for as long as it connects your home network to the internet. Firmware updates can address security problems after you buy it, so a useful purchase question is not only “How fast is it?” but also “How long will this exact device receive security updates, and how will I get them?”
Look for a dated support commitment or a written policy that explains how the manufacturer determines the support period. Record the exact model name and hardware revision, the country or region where it is sold, and the date support is due to end. A date attached to one model, version or market should not be treated as a global promise for every router sold under a similar name.
For example, ASUS publishes region-specific security-support information. Its UK page, updated August 19, 2026, lists security-update periods for named networking products, with groups ending on December 31, 2028, 2029 or 2030. Its Singapore page, updated September 3, 2026, lists model groups with dates that include September 30, 2029. These are examples tied to those pages and regions, not a universal ASUS warranty or a way to infer support in another country. Check the live entry for your exact model on the ASUS UK policy page or ASUS Singapore policy page.

TP-Link’s published PSTI compliance statement gives a defined support period that ends three years after a product’s end-of-life date and includes product entries with dates. That commitment must be read alongside the jurisdiction and the exact product listing; it is not a statement that all TP-Link products in every market receive the same period. See the TP-Link PSTI compliance statement.
These examples illustrate why comparing support commitments takes more than lining up years. One manufacturer may publish a fixed calendar end date for a particular model group; another may define a minimum period relative to EOL. Compare what triggers the end date and which products and markets the statement covers.
Check that the exact router is not already at end of life
Before paying, search the manufacturer’s EOL list using the full product name and hardware version. An EOL entry can mean the manufacturer no longer provides firmware for the device, even if a retailer still has stock. ASUS says models on its EOL list are no longer manufactured or updated with firmware and documentation. Its networking EOL list is therefore a useful check before purchase as well as when deciding whether to keep an older router.
TP-Link’s US EOL page says its list can apply to a whole model or to a specific version, and that the list may change without notice. The page was identified as the new home for that list on September 21, 2026. Check the current entry for the version you are considering rather than relying on a retailer’s broad model-family description. The details are on TP-Link’s US EOL information page.

For a used router, the same check matters: an attractive price does not make an unsupported device a good long-term security choice. If the manufacturer no longer issues firmware for the exact version, do not assume that a reset, a new app or a different Wi-Fi setting can restore security support.
Require modern Wi-Fi security and check older-device compatibility
For the wireless network, look for WPA3 Personal. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) calls WPA3 the newer and best available encryption, while also saying WPA2 Personal can work. Its guidance is to use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, and to consider replacing a router that offers only obsolete WPA or WEP after checking whether an update is available. Read the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance for its explanation of these options.
WPA3 support is not the same as a guarantee that every device in your home will connect using WPA3. If you have older phones, computers or smart-home devices, check their compatibility and the router’s supported security modes before choosing a configuration. WPA2 compatibility can help accommodate devices that do not support WPA3, but avoid setting the network to an obsolete mode simply to make an old client work; look for a safer configuration supported by both the router and that device.

Evaluate how firmware updates are delivered and protected
A long support date is only useful if security fixes reach the router and can be installed safely. NIST’s September 2024 report, Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products, recommends secure, authorized software-update mechanisms; signed update packages; keeping software current through automatic updates or consistent customer notifications; and safeguards against rolling firmware back to a version with known vulnerabilities. These are NIST recommendations, not a consumer certification that a particular router has passed a test. The report is available as NIST IR 8425A, with its publication record at NIST’s publication page.
On the manufacturer’s support pages or product documentation, look for a documented update method and a way to learn when updates are available. Automatic updating can reduce the chance that a fix is missed, while clear notifications give you a route to act if installation is manual. Check whether you can see the installed firmware version and an update history, and whether the maker explains how updates are authenticated or verified. If the manufacturer does not explain these basics, treat that as missing information rather than assuming the process is secure.
Also determine what the support promise covers. A router may depend on a phone app, cloud account or other bundled software for setup or management. Check whether the manufacturer’s stated security period applies to the router firmware alone or also explains support for those connected components. Do not infer a commitment for an app or cloud service from a date listed for router hardware unless the policy says so.

| What to record | What to verify | Why it affects the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Model and hardware revision | Full product identifier and the version shown on the device, box or support listing | Support and EOL status can differ by version, even within a model family. |
| Sales region | Country or market for the unit and the scope of the policy you are reading | A regional support date should not be generalized to a different market. |
| Security-support commitment | Fixed end date or minimum period, what starts the clock, and which models are listed | These terms are not interchangeable; compare the commitment’s basis, not just the number of years. |
| Update channel | Automatic installation or clear notifications, update history, and documented package verification | A written support period needs a usable way to deliver and install fixes. |
| Wireless security | WPA3 Personal and WPA2 Personal availability, plus compatibility with your clients | Modern encryption must work with the devices you actually use. |
| Home-network fit | Coverage needs, mesh nodes if needed, wired ports, ISP service and client compatibility | A secure router still needs to work for the layout and devices in your home. |
| Price | Current price for the exact model and revision from the seller | Compare price only after confirming that the products offer the support and fit you need. |
For support dates, retain the link and the date you checked it. Manufacturer lists can change; the TP-Link US EOL page explicitly says its list may change without notice. Recheck a policy close to purchase if the listing, model revision or regional availability has changed.
Match the router to the home without confusing speed for security
After support and encryption, choose for practical fit. Consider the size and layout of the area to cover, the number of wired devices and ports you need, the speed of your internet service, and whether one router or a mesh system is appropriate for the coverage problem. Confirm that your devices can use the features you plan to rely on.
Mesh is relevant when a single router does not adequately cover the home; it is not automatically a safer or better choice. Count the nodes the layout actually calls for, and check whether support information clearly identifies the included hardware and its versions. More radios, ports or advertised maximum throughput do not extend the firmware-support period. Nor does a newer Wi-Fi generation establish that a vendor will maintain a device longer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Make the trade-off explicit: if two routers meet your coverage and connection needs, prefer the one with the clearer, longer applicable security commitment and better-documented update process. If only one candidate has a verifiable support date, that is decision-relevant information even if the other advertises a higher peak speed.

Use this buying workflow
- Identify the exact unit. Write down the complete model name, hardware revision and country of sale from the product listing or packaging. Do not stop at a series name shared by multiple versions.
- Check support and EOL pages. Search the manufacturer’s security-update policy and EOL list for that exact model and revision. Record whether the support commitment is a fixed date or a minimum period, the market it covers, and whether the product is already listed as EOL.
- Confirm wireless security. Verify WPA3 Personal support and check WPA2 Personal compatibility for older clients. If an update may add a supported mode, confirm that in manufacturer documentation rather than assuming it will.
- Inspect update practices. Look for automatic updates or clear security-update notifications, an update history, and documentation of secure, authorized update delivery. Find out whether the stated support applies to any required app or cloud service as well as firmware.
- Check the physical and service fit. Match coverage, wired ports, ISP speed and device compatibility to your home. Add mesh nodes only if the coverage layout calls for them.
- Compare like with like. Put the candidate information in the table above. Do not compare a regional end date for one product with a worldwide-sounding minimum for another without noting their different scopes and terms.
Secure the router after installation
A well-supported router still needs safe setup. The FTC recommends changing default administrative and Wi-Fi credentials, installing available updates, and disabling remote management, WPS and UPnP when they are not needed. These features can create security weaknesses if left enabled without a reason. Follow the router’s own documented setup instructions; menu names and locations vary by model.
- Install current firmware. Use the router’s update control or the manufacturer’s documented update method, then confirm the installed version if the interface shows it.
- Replace default credentials. Set a new, unique administrative password and a strong Wi-Fi password instead of keeping factory credentials.
- Choose a supported encryption mode. Use WPA3 Personal where your clients support it; use WPA2 Personal where necessary for compatibility, rather than obsolete WPA or WEP.
- Turn off unneeded convenience features. Disable remote management, WPS and UPnP if your setup does not require them. If a device or service depends on one, understand that dependency before changing the setting.
- Keep track of support. Save the model, revision and support-policy page, and revisit manufacturer notices periodically so you can tell whether the router is still supported.
The FTC’s recommendations and explanation of these settings are in its guide to securing a home Wi-Fi network.
Warning signs that should change your choice
- No support commitment you can verify: you cannot find a policy or model-specific security-support entry for the market where you are buying.
- Ambiguous version coverage: a listing gives only a family name, while the manufacturer’s policy distinguishes hardware versions.
- Already EOL: the exact model or hardware revision appears on the manufacturer’s EOL list.
- Unclear update process: documentation does not explain how fixes are delivered or how customers will learn that action is needed.
- Obsolete security only: after checking for updates, the router offers only WPA or WEP rather than WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal.
- Performance claims standing in for support: the product description emphasizes speed or Wi-Fi generation but gives no applicable firmware-support information.
These are reasons to pause and verify, not proof by themselves that a product has a particular defect. If the manufacturer cannot establish that a model is supported, choose a candidate with a clearer policy rather than filling the gap with assumptions.
Make the decision
Choose the simplest router that covers your home and meets your wired and wireless needs, provided its exact hardware version is still supported, its security-update terms apply in your country, and its update mechanism is documented. Favor WPA3 Personal with WPA2 Personal compatibility where needed. If you cannot verify support or EOL status for the exact unit, do not let a high speed rating or a familiar model name substitute for that evidence.
