To choose a secure small-business router, check the exact model’s security advisories, firmware-update eligibility, and published end-of-support dates before buying. Prefer vendors that clearly document those milestones, then verify that the specific hardware revision and region you plan to use remain eligible for updates. A published policy shows how a vendor handles support; it does not guarantee a particular support duration for every model.

Check the support lifecycle for the exact model

A router’s useful security life depends on more than whether its manufacturer still sells it. Look for the hardware’s end-of-support date and any separate firmware milestones, such as when maintenance updates end or when upgrades become restricted. Cisco Meraki’s lifecycle policy is one example of a vendor publishing milestones such as end of sale, end of support, firmware maintenance, and firmware restriction: Cisco Meraki End-of-Life Products and Dates.

Do not treat a vendor’s stated typical support interval as a promise for every device, or as a number of years guaranteed from your purchase date. Confirm the dates published for the model itself and ask what support or replacement options apply as it approaches end of support.

Verify update eligibility

Check that updates apply to the precise model and hardware revision you are considering, in your region. Also check whether access to updates, management features, or support depends on a cloud service or active license. These conditions can vary; confirm them in the vendor’s current product terms rather than assuming they are universal.

Look beyond the router’s update-check button

A router reporting that it is up to date is not conclusive proof that it has the latest security firmware. In an ASUS case, the Federal Trade Commission documented that the router’s update tool sometimes reported a device was current even when newer critical security firmware was available: FTC: ASUS Settles FTC Charges.

Before purchase, find the vendor’s security advisories and the model’s support or downloads page. Check whether notices identify affected models and firmware versions, and whether the vendor provides a clear reporting or support path. TP-Link Omada, for example, publishes security information for its products: TP-Link Security Advisories. After purchase, check those sources as well as the router’s built-in update tool.

Compare candidates on practical security criteria

What to compare What to verify
Lifecycle transparency Are model-specific end-of-support and firmware milestones published and explained?
Security updates Can you find model-specific advisories, update instructions, and a way to contact support or report a vulnerability?
Eligibility and terms Does the exact hardware revision in your region qualify for firmware updates? Do management or support features require a cloud service or active license?
Configuration controls Can you change default credentials, disable remote management, and use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption?
End-of-support transition Does the vendor explain what happens at end of sale or end of support and how to plan a replacement?

Use the answers to rule out candidates with unclear update eligibility or lifecycle dates. A well-documented policy is useful evidence of transparency, but it is not a model-by-model security certification or a guarantee that all devices receive updates for a fixed duration.

Secure the router during setup

The Federal Trade Commission’s small-business router guidance recommends: “Change the default name and password, turn off remote management, and log out as the administrator once the router is set up.” It also advises using WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. See the FTC’s small-business security guidance.

Keep firmware current and plan for replacement

Firmware maintenance continues after installation. The FTC advises small-business owners that they may need to visit the router manufacturer’s website regularly to check for updates. Follow the vendor’s instructions for your exact model and hardware revision, and monitor its security notices as well as its update tool.

End-of-life is also a planning milestone, not just a date to note. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency advises organizations to “Monitor for vendor end-of-life (EOL) announcements for hardware devices, operating system versions, and software, and upgrade as soon as possible.” See CISA’s guidance on end-of-life devices. Decide how your business will replace the router before it stops receiving security updates, rather than assuming an unsupported device will remain safe to use.
