A secure robot lawn mower is not defined by a single “hacker-proof” label. Choose one by verifying its network dependencies, pairing and account controls, firmware-update process, support period, privacy policy, and any independently recognized certification. Those details vary by model and country, so use the exact mower’s manual, app documentation, and security policy before buying.

What “secure” means for a connected mower

A robot mower can contain radios, sensors, a mobile app, cloud services, and firmware that controls a machine operating outside your home. Security therefore has several separate parts:

  • Local access: Can a nearby person pair with the mower over Bluetooth, discover it, or change settings?
  • Network access: Does it join Wi-Fi, a cellular network, or both? Which functions stop when the internet or cloud service is unavailable?
  • Account access: Can someone who obtains your app credentials locate the mower, change schedules, or issue commands?
  • Software maintenance: How are firmware updates delivered, authenticated, installed, and supported after purchase?
  • Privacy: What location, images, telemetry, or account information are collected, and can you control retention or deletion?
  • Physical safety: Does the mower fail safely when communication is interrupted, a boundary is crossed, or a sensor detects a person or object?

No manufacturer statement is an independent security audit. Treat security pages as evidence to verify, not as a guarantee that a product has no vulnerabilities. There is no reliable industry-wide statistic establishing how often robot mowers are hacked, so a precise risk percentage would be misleading.

Can my robotic lawn mower be hacked?

Husqvarna presents this question in its support material, along with “Is it safe to connect my robotic lawn mower to Wi-Fi?” The practical answer is that any networked device can have vulnerabilities, but the relevant risk depends on the model’s radios, software, account protections, update process, and how you configure it. A mower that has no internet-connected functions has a different exposure from one that accepts remote commands through a cloud service.

Before purchase, ask the manufacturer or dealer to identify the exact attack surfaces for your model: Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity, cloud APIs, the mobile app, and physical access to the charging station. Then verify what the mower can still do locally if the app, internet connection, or vendor cloud is unavailable.

1. Map every connection and what it controls

Start with a model-specific connectivity table in the manual or app documentation. Husqvarna’s documentation illustrates why a product family name is not enough: it lists Bluetooth across its models, while Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity are available only on selected models. Its guides distinguish Wi-Fi-only models from models using Wi-Fi plus mobile connectivity.

Connection Questions to answer Why it matters
Bluetooth Is it required for initial setup, nearby control, diagnostics, or every app session? What pairing confirmation and encryption are used? Bluetooth can be reached by someone physically near the mower, so pairing restrictions and a changeable PIN matter.
Wi-Fi Does the mower need your network for normal mowing, remote control, maps, notifications, or updates? Does it support WPA2, WPA3, or both? Wi-Fi credentials and router security become part of the mower’s security boundary.
Cellular/mobile Is a cellular radio included, and does it provide remote control or only location and service features? Is a subscription required? Cellular connectivity can keep remote functions working outside your home network, but it adds a cloud and account dependency.
Cloud service Which commands pass through the vendor’s servers? What happens during an outage, account lockout, or service shutdown? A cloud outage should not be confused with a mower failure. Confirm whether local schedules and safety functions continue.
Charging-station link Must the mower be docked or within strong Wi-Fi range to receive updates? Some update systems rely on the charging station’s network connection rather than a direct mower connection.

Husqvarna’s Wi-Fi and firmware guide says feature availability varies by model. For Wi-Fi-only models, it specifies strong Wi-Fi at the charging station for firmware delivery. Confirm the requirement for your exact model in the Husqvarna Wi-Fi and FOTA guide.

Separate ordinary mowing from remote features

Ask the seller to demonstrate three states: normal operation with the internet connected, operation with the router turned off, and operation with the app or cloud service unavailable. The documentation may state that schedules continue locally, but do not assume this for every model. Record which functions stop: remote start, location tracking, notifications, map synchronization, weather features, or updates.

Use a separate network when appropriate

If the mower joins Wi-Fi, place it on a guest or Internet-of-Things network when your router supports client isolation and the mower does not need to reach local computers. This limits the damage if the mower or its credentials are compromised. Do not enable a network mode that blocks required communication without checking the mower’s requirements first.

2. Check pairing, PINs, passwords, and account controls

Security begins at setup. Look for a unique credential, a forced password or PIN change, account-based access, and a way to remove old owners or phones. Verify whether multiple household members receive separate accounts or share one login.

Default PINs must be changed

Husqvarna states that “The factory PIN code is 1234 on all mowers produced 2024 or later.” That is a manufacturer statement, not a universal rule for every brand or model. If you buy an affected Automower model, change the PIN during setup and confirm that the new value is required for pairing or sensitive actions. For any other mower, look for a model-specific default and change it immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not leave a printed default PIN in an exposed shed or share it in a group chat. If the app offers account recovery, protect the email account or phone number used for recovery with a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication where available.

Verify pairing behavior

Find out whether pairing requires physical access to the mower, a button press, a displayed code, or only a PIN. Physical confirmation is preferable to silent pairing. Husqvarna says its Automower connection uses a PIN to establish a connection and describes encrypted communication between the mower and app in its connection security answer. Its security FAQ also describes Bluetooth encryption. These are Husqvarna’s published claims; check that the same behavior applies to the model and software version you intend to buy.

Review account lifecycle controls

  • Can you see all phones, tablets, and users currently authorized?
  • Can you revoke a lost phone without resetting the mower?
  • Does transferring ownership remove the previous owner’s access?
  • Does the service notify you about a new login, pairing, or password change?
  • Is multi-factor authentication available for the app account?

If the documentation does not answer these questions, mark the control as “not stated” rather than assuming it exists.

3. Examine the firmware-update process

Connected hardware needs a way to receive security fixes. A useful update policy tells you the supported models, the support start date, the end date or minimum duration, the region covered, and how updates are installed. “Automatic updates” alone is not enough: you also need to know whether the package is authenticated, whether installation can be deferred, and how the owner is notified.

Compare support promises with their qualifications

Manufacturer policy Published commitment Scope and qualification
Husqvarna At least three years of security updates from the manufacturing date for FOTA-capable Automower models. Applies to models supporting Firmware Over The Air (FOTA); the start point is manufacture, not your purchase date. See the Husqvarna support-period statement.
Roborock “We will provide software security updates for lawn mower for a minimum of 2 years.” The UK policy lists model launch and end dates and warns that timing can vary by region and model. Do not apply those dates to another country without regional documentation. See the UK policy.
EGO Three-year periods for named UK-market models, including 1 February 2026 through 30 January 2029 for the identified RMR models. The cited policy is explicitly for the UK market and uses model-specific calendar dates. Check the exact model designation on the EGO product-security policy.
TerraMow At least three years from the product’s official launch or market-release date. The company says the table on its Product Security page supplies specific dates. Confirm the regional product entry.

These periods are not directly comparable. One starts at manufacture, another at launch, and others depend on a named region or model. A mower purchased late in its support window may have substantially less remaining coverage than the headline number suggests.

Ask how an update is delivered

Use this checklist before buying:

  • Does the mower check automatically, and how often?
  • Must it be parked in the charging station?
  • Does the charging station need strong Wi-Fi?
  • Can the owner approve installation, or is it automatic?
  • Does mowing pause during installation, and is there a recovery method if power is interrupted?
  • Does the app show the available version, installation result, and date?
  • Does the manufacturer explain package signing, certificate validation, or another authenticity check?
  • Can you install a security update without an active cloud subscription?

Husqvarna says some models check weekly, download updates automatically when available, and typically download while the mower is parked. Its app reports available and installed updates. Wi-Fi-only models need a strong connection at the charging station. Verify the exact workflow in the Husqvarna firmware-update guide and the Wi-Fi and FOTA guide.

Prefer an explicit authenticity explanation

A trustworthy update design should prevent an attacker from replacing official firmware with a modified package. Look for language about digitally signed updates, verified channels, certificate checks, rollback protection, or an equivalent mechanism. If a page merely says “secure updates” without explaining the control, record that the mechanism is not stated. TerraMow publishes claims about TLS 1.2 or higher and verified update channels; treat those as the manufacturer’s description and confirm the feature for your model.

4. Read the privacy policy before connecting the mower

Security and privacy overlap but are not identical. The app may collect information even when the mower itself is safe from unauthorized commands. Read the privacy policy for the exact mower, app, and region and look for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Precise location, property boundaries, mowing maps, and travel history.
  • Images or video from cameras, if the model uses them for navigation or obstacle detection.
  • Voice, diagnostic, crash, and telemetry data.
  • Account identifiers, contact details, device identifiers, and IP addresses.
  • Data sent to cloud providers, analytics services, dealers, or service partners.
  • Retention periods and whether data is stored after account closure.
  • Controls to disable optional collection, export data, delete an account, or remove a device.
  • Cross-border transfers and the legal basis for processing in your region.

The mower-specific material reviewed for this guide does not establish a comparable privacy profile across models. Do not generalize from one company to another; open the policy linked from the exact app listing or manufacturer support page before you create an account.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

5. Treat certifications and ratings as evidence, not immunity

A security certification can show that a defined product, version, and process was assessed against a defined standard. It does not prove that every model in a product family is certified or that future software remains compliant. Check:

  • The exact model, firmware version, and region in the certificate.
  • The standard and test scope.
  • The independent certifier or laboratory.
  • The issue date, expiry date, and surveillance requirements.
  • Whether the certificate covers the mower, app, cloud service, or only one component.

For context, DJI’s trust center reports certification to ETSI EN 303 645 for ROMO, a different connected product. That illustrates the kind of specific certification claim to look for; it is not evidence that a robot lawn mower has that certification.

Weight the items according to your property

For a small yard where the mower is always within Bluetooth range, pairing and physical-access controls may matter most. A large property with remote monitoring puts more weight on cloud authentication, cellular or Wi-Fi availability, and account alerts. If your internet connection is unreliable, prioritize documented offline mowing and a clear local recovery procedure. If the mower operates near a public path, combine cybersecurity checks with physical safety features and a schedule that keeps people away from the operating area.

7. Secure the mower during installation

  1. Install the official app. Use the manufacturer’s current app listing and verify the developer name. Avoid unofficial APK files or links sent by strangers.
  2. Create a unique account password. Use a password manager and enable multi-factor authentication if the service provides it.
  3. Change the mower’s default PIN. Do this before pairing additional phones or inviting household members.
  4. Update the mower and charging station. Keep the mower docked, powered, and within the documented network range until the app confirms completion.
  5. Configure Wi-Fi deliberately. Use WPA2 or WPA3 as supported by the model, a strong router password, and a separate network where practical.
  6. Review permissions. Grant location, Bluetooth, camera, and notifications only when needed for the feature you intend to use.
  7. Check authorized users and devices. Remove installers, former owners, lost phones, and test accounts.
  8. Record support dates. Save the model number, firmware version, policy URL, and stated support end date with your purchase records.

8. Troubleshoot common security and connectivity failures

The mower will not pair

Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled, you are physically near the mower, the mower is not already paired to another account, and the PIN has not been mistyped. Remove an obsolete phone from the authorized-device list before resetting anything. A factory reset can erase maps and schedules, so use it only after checking the model’s recovery instructions.

Remote control stopped but mowing continues

Check the router, charging-station Wi-Fi signal, cellular coverage, and cloud-service status. If the local schedule still runs, the failure is likely in the remote path rather than the mower’s cutting system. Do not repeatedly create new accounts, which can complicate ownership and device authorization.

An update is waiting indefinitely

Return the mower to its dock, verify the charging station has the required network signal, keep power connected, and check the app for an installation result. Do not interrupt power during an installation unless the manufacturer’s recovery procedure instructs you to do so. If the app reports an error, capture the model, current firmware, error text, and timestamp before contacting support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You bought a used mower

Require the seller to remove the mower from their account and demonstrate a clean ownership transfer. Change the PIN, create your own account, revoke every previous device, install current firmware, and inspect the privacy settings. If ownership cannot be cleared, treat that as a reason to walk away.

Questions to send the manufacturer before purchase

  • Which functions require internet or cloud access, and which continue locally?
  • What radios are in this exact regional model?
  • What is the default PIN or password, and is a change forced at first setup?
  • How are Bluetooth and app communications encrypted?
  • How often does the mower check for updates, and must it be docked?
  • How are update packages authenticated?
  • What are the support start and end dates for this model in my country?
  • Can I delete account, location, map, image, and diagnostic data?
  • What certification covers this exact model and firmware version?

Keep written answers with the model’s manual. Security features can change between hardware revisions, app versions, and national editions even when the retail name looks identical.
