The secure choice depends on who needs the model and how much control you require. Public distribution, private collaboration, and internal sharing between cloud accounts have different security boundaries. Compare each platform’s identity controls, visibility settings, network exposure, encryption and key management, artifact scanning and loading behavior, version provenance, audit logs, and fit with your existing cloud and identity systems. A documented feature is only an available control; your configuration, plan, region, and operating procedures determine whether it protects your workflow.
Start with the sharing boundary
Write down the intended audience before comparing products. A model that is safe to publish for anonymous download may be inappropriate for a partner, and a repository that is adequate for a small team may not satisfy an internal multi-account governance requirement.
Public distribution
Public sharing means anyone who can reach the service may discover or download the artifact. The main risks are accidental exposure of proprietary weights, embedded credentials or training data, malicious files being downloaded by users, and consumers loading the model unsafely. Use a release process that removes secrets, records the exact revision, states the license, and explains the expected loading format. Public visibility is not made private by requiring an account to download; treat internet-facing authenticated access as a different boundary from private network access.

For contractors, customers, or research partners, use private repositories or packages and give each person an individually attributable identity. Confirm how invitations are revoked, whether guests can create or share new revisions, and whether tokens can be limited to read-only access. Require multi-factor authentication (MFA) or single sign-on (SSO) where available, and review access when a project or contract ends.

Internal or cross-account sharing
When teams share models between cloud accounts, the important questions are which account owns the registry, which roles may publish or approve a version, and how a consuming account receives it without copying uncontrolled files. A central registry with version metadata, lineage, approvals, and audit events is usually easier to govern than ad-hoc object-storage links.
The security controls to compare
Identity and least-privilege authorization
Look for separate human and machine identities. Human access should support MFA, SSO, group or role assignment, and rapid offboarding. Automation should use short-lived or narrowly scoped credentials rather than a developer’s personal token. Check whether permissions distinguish viewing, downloading, uploading, deleting, administering a repository, and approving a production release.
Ask how often access can be reviewed and whether the service records who changed a permission. Resource groups or role-based policies are useful only when they map to your actual teams and environments. A single shared token for an entire pipeline makes incident investigation and revocation difficult.

“Private” can mean that an object is hidden from unauthenticated users while the service remains reachable over the public internet. If your threat model requires traffic to stay on a private network, verify support for private endpoints, VPC or equivalent isolation, firewall policy, and DNS routing. Document every path used by the workflow: browser and API requests, container pulls, training jobs, metadata calls, and artifact downloads.
Encryption and key handling
Verify TLS for client-to-service traffic and encryption at rest for model files, metadata, logs, caches, and backups. If policy requires customer-managed keys, establish which storage is covered, who can use the key, how rotation works, and what happens when the key is disabled. Do not assume that “encrypted in transit” covers every internal hop. AWS documentation for SageMaker AI explicitly discloses exceptions for some internal service traffic, including certain control-plane and distributed-job communications; workflows with strict in-network encryption requirements need a traffic-specific review.
Artifact trust and safe loading
Model files are executable in practice even when they are called data. Some serialization formats can invoke code during deserialization. Prefer formats and loading modes that do not execute arbitrary code, pin a specific revision, and test loading in a sandbox with no sensitive credentials or network access.

Repository malware or pickle scanning is valuable screening, but it is not a proof that an artifact is harmless. Scanners can miss a novel payload, a malicious custom layer, or a dependency fetched at runtime. Review the publisher, provenance, commit history, hash or digest, license, and the exact code path that loads the model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Provenance, approvals, and auditability
Require immutable or signed revisions where the platform supports them. Record the training code version, dataset identifiers, dependency lockfile, evaluation results, owner, intended use, and approval decision alongside each model version. A release path that promotes a tested version from development to production is safer than rebuilding from an unpinned branch.
Audit logs should cover authentication, token creation, permission changes, uploads, downloads where available, version changes, approvals, and deletions. Export those events to the same monitoring system used for other production services, and define retention before an incident occurs.
Operational and contractual fit
Check the service’s region availability, data-retention behavior, support model, incident-notification terms, and any enterprise agreement required for SSO or compliance commitments. Feature lists can vary by subscription tier and region. Confirm the exact entitlement in writing before designing a control around it.
What the documented platform controls show
The following comparison summarizes controls documented by the platform providers. It is not an independent security ranking, and the controls still require customer configuration.
| Decision area | Hugging Face Hub | AWS SageMaker and Model Registry |
|---|---|---|
| Private sharing | Private repositories for models, datasets, and Spaces; resource groups for controlled collaboration. | Model Registry supports sharing between AWS accounts through AWS Resource Access Manager (RAM). |
| Identity controls | Access tokens, MFA, SSO, and resource-group permissions are documented. | AWS guidance uses IAM roles and separate human and machine identities in a multi-account architecture. |
| Artifact screening | Malware and pickle scanning, commit signatures, and third-party scanner integrations are documented. | Private registries for model containers and other Security Hub controls are recommended for deployment environments. |
| Encryption and network controls | Review the plan and deployment details for the encryption and network requirements of your workflow. | SageMaker states that model and system artifacts are encrypted in transit and at rest; Security Hub checks include network isolation, custom VPC notebooks, KMS encryption, and inter-container encryption for applicable jobs. |
| Governance | Repository history and signed commits can support provenance; loading behavior remains the consumer’s responsibility. | Enterprise guidance describes a central registry, versioned model packages, metadata, lineage, and CloudTrail audit trails. |
| Documented limitation | The security policy warns that loading an untrusted model, dataset, configuration, or pickle can create load-time risk. | AWS documentation discloses that some internal service traffic is not encrypted by default; verify the paths used by your jobs. |
Using the Hub for a private collaboration
1. Create a private repository and define ownership
Make the repository private before uploading a model. Assign an owner responsible for access reviews and an approved release process. Keep development experiments separate from the repository used by downstream applications so an accidental push cannot become a production dependency.

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
2. Assign identities, not shared credentials
Give collaborators the smallest permission set that supports their work. Use read-only access for consumers, write access for designated maintainers, and administrative access for a very small group. Issue separate access tokens to automation and set their scope to the required repositories and operations. Enable MFA for user accounts and SSO when your organization plan and identity provider support it. Remove invitations and revoke tokens during offboarding.
3. Protect the revision history
Use commit signing where practical and require review before a release tag or production revision is accepted. Pin consumers to a commit or immutable revision rather than an unqualified “latest” reference. Store a digest and the model card or equivalent metadata with the release record.
4. Treat scanner results as one gate
Use the Hub’s malware and pickle scanning, and review any third-party scanner integration available to your organization. A clean scan does not replace code review, dependency analysis, license review, or sandboxed loading. The platform’s security policy distinguishes ordinary API vulnerabilities from the documented risk that a user deliberately chooses to load an untrusted artifact; your application must address that loading decision.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
5. Load defensively
- Download a pinned revision rather than a moving branch.
- Verify the expected hash or signature before loading.
- Use a safe serialization format and a loader mode that does not execute arbitrary code whenever the framework supports one.
- Test the load in an isolated environment with no production credentials, restricted filesystem access, and egress controls.
- Only then promote the artifact to a serving environment.
If your organization needs contractual terms or enterprise identity features, verify the applicable Hub plan and terms; public documentation does not establish identical availability for every subscription.
Using SageMaker Model Registry across AWS accounts
1. Choose a registry ownership model
A central platform or governance account can own model packages while development and production accounts consume approved versions. AWS’s enterprise ML guidance describes this multi-account pattern with centralized model management, versioning, lineage, and CloudTrail audit trails. Define which team can register, approve, share, or reject a version before granting IAM permissions.
2. Share through AWS RAM, not copied files
AWS announced cross-account sharing for SageMaker Model Registry through AWS Resource Access Manager on June 28, 2024. The announcement states that the capability was available in SageMaker Model Registry regions except GovCloud regions at that time. Check the current AWS regional feature matrix before implementation, then test the exact account, region, and principal combinations you will use.

3. Verify encryption for every artifact path
SageMaker documentation states that model artifacts and other system artifacts are encrypted in transit and at rest and that API and console requests use SSL. Determine which KMS key protects each storage location, who may decrypt it, and whether logs, temporary volumes, and backups use the same or a different key.
The same documentation notes that some internal control-plane and distributed-job traffic may be unencrypted. Map your jobs and decide whether that exception is acceptable. Where supported, enable inter-container encryption for distributed training or processing jobs and record the setting in your deployment baseline.
4. Apply network-isolation controls
AWS Security Hub’s SageMaker controls include enabling network isolation, placing notebooks in a custom VPC, using private registries for model containers, encrypting specified storage with KMS keys, and enabling inter-container encryption for applicable jobs. Treat these as configuration checks, not a certification that the complete deployment meets your policy.
Use private connectivity and restrictive security groups where the workflow permits. Test that training, evaluation, registry access, and deployment can complete without an unintended public route. If a component must reach an external service, document the destination and the data it can send.
5. Record lineage and approval evidence
Store model version metadata, source commit, dataset reference, evaluation results, owner, and approval status in the registry workflow. Use CloudTrail events to monitor registration, sharing, permission changes, and deployment actions. Alert on unexpected cross-account access or a production deployment that bypasses the approval path.

A practical selection process
- Describe the boundary. State whether the audience is public, a named external group, or identified internal accounts. Include the regions and data classifications involved.
- List unacceptable outcomes. Examples include public disclosure of weights, loading code execution, use of an unlicensed dataset, or deployment of an unapproved revision.
- Map required controls. Convert each outcome into a testable requirement: private visibility, MFA or SSO, scoped tokens or IAM roles, private networking, customer-managed keys, scanning, signed revisions, approval, and audit export.
- Check service and plan support. Confirm that the required control exists in the region and subscription you will buy. Do not rely on a feature name without checking its scope and limitations.
- Build a threat-model test. Attempt unauthorized reads, writes, downloads, cross-account access, and deployment of an unapproved version in a non-production environment. Verify the resulting audit events.
- Test artifact loading. Use a representative model, including its dependencies, in an isolated sandbox. Confirm that scanners, signatures, hashes, and safe-loader settings behave as expected.
- Review operations. Define token rotation, role review, offboarding, key rotation, incident response, backup retention, and artifact deletion procedures.
- Document the release decision. Record the chosen boundary, tested controls, residual risks, owner, region, plan, and date. Recheck after major platform or model-format changes.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling an internet-facing service “private”
Authenticated access over the public internet can still be appropriate, but it is not equivalent to a private endpoint or isolated network. If policy requires private traffic, add a network requirement and test routes rather than relying on a repository visibility label.
Using one long-lived token everywhere
Shared credentials prevent attribution and make emergency revocation disruptive. Replace them with individual identities and narrowly scoped automation credentials, then schedule access reviews.
Trusting a scan as a verdict
Scanning lowers the chance of accepting a known malicious file, but it cannot prove that custom code, dependencies, or a future revision is safe. Combine scanning with provenance checks, pinned revisions, safe loading, and sandboxing.
Loading by branch or latest tag
A mutable reference can change without a code review in your application. Pin an immutable revision or digest and require an explicit promotion when the model changes.
Ignoring internal encryption exceptions
Provider statements about encryption often describe client connections and stored artifacts, not every internal hop. Read the traffic-specific disclosure, enable available inter-container or network-isolation controls, and decide whether the remaining paths meet your policy.
Copying models between accounts manually
Manual exports lose lineage, approval context, and consistent access policy. Prefer a registry-sharing mechanism, such as RAM for supported SageMaker Model Registry regions, and keep the source version and consumer account visible in audit records.
Forgetting license and provenance checks
A technically safe file can still be unsuitable if its training data, weights, or dependencies are not licensed for your use. Record the publisher, license, source revision, and intended-use restrictions before approval.

Final pre-production checklist
- The audience, region, and data boundary are written down.
- Every human has an attributable identity with MFA or SSO where required.
- Automation uses scoped credentials, and offboarding and rotation procedures are tested.
- Visibility, private-network requirements, TLS, at-rest encryption, and key ownership are verified for every artifact path.
- Model files are scanned, provenance is reviewed, revisions are pinned, and loading occurs in a restricted environment.
- Version metadata, lineage, approvals, and rollback information are attached to the release.
- Audit events for access, sharing, permission changes, and deployment reach the monitoring system.
- Plan, region, contract, retention, and incident-notification terms match the organization’s requirements.
For a Hub-centered collaboration, the documented private repositories, scoped tokens, MFA, SSO, resource groups, signatures, and malware or pickle scanning provide building blocks; you still must control loading and release practices. For AWS-centered internal sharing, a multi-account Model Registry design with IAM, RAM sharing where supported, KMS, VPC and network-isolation controls, inter-container encryption, version metadata, lineage, and CloudTrail can provide the governance path. Neither platform is universally safest: select the one whose controls match your boundary and prove the configuration with tests before production use.
