Choose a secure cloud GPU provider by verifying the exact GPU SKU, confidential-computing mode, image, region, and shared-responsibility boundary you will actually deploy. A generic “secure cloud” statement or compliance badge is not enough: require evidence for in-use protection, attestation, encryption and key control, tenant isolation, data sanitization, audit scope, and the customer-operated controls.

What “secure cloud GPU” must protect

A rented GPU processes data in several places: GPU memory, host and system memory, attached disks, network storage, management interfaces, and backups. Security therefore has to cover the entire lifecycle, not only the moment a model is running.

Confidential computing can add hardware-backed isolation and encryption while data is being processed. Google Cloud describes confidential GPUs as using hardware-based encryption and isolation for GPU processing, and says its Confidential VM technology extends a hardware-based trusted execution environment (TEE) to attached NVIDIA GPUs. Microsoft documents a configuration in which the confidential VM and its attached GPU share the TEE boundary. These statements apply to specified products and configurations, not to every GPU instance.

  • At rest: boot disks, local scratch space, network-attached volumes, snapshots, and backups encrypted with defined key controls.
  • In transit: traffic between clients, storage, control planes, and GPU workers protected and restricted.
  • Between tenants: GPU memory, system memory, disks, and firmware state sanitized before reassignment or hardware replacement.
  • Operational access: provider administrators, support systems, telemetry, and management endpoints constrained and logged.

Ask for evidence at each boundary. A provider that can prove encrypted disks but cannot explain GPU-memory cleanup has not answered the complete isolation question.

Start with the exact deployment, not the provider’s brand

Security features are configuration-specific. Record the exact combination you intend to rent before comparing providers:

  1. GPU model and quantity.
  2. Virtual-machine or bare-metal SKU.
  3. Confidential-computing mode, if offered.
  4. Operating-system image, kernel, drivers, and container runtime.
  5. Region and availability zone.
  6. Local scratch storage, attached volumes, object storage, and backup services.
  7. Network topology, private endpoints, firewall rules, and management access.

Then ask the provider to confirm that every security claim covers this combination. Availability can differ by region, GPU model, image, and capacity, and may change between ordering and deployment. Recheck the official product documentation immediately before launch.

Use confidential GPU computing only when the boundary is proven

What confidential GPU protection provides

In a confidential-GPU design, hardware and firmware enforce an isolation boundary around a protected VM and its GPU. Encryption and integrity controls are intended to prevent a hostile host or neighboring tenant from reading or modifying protected data during processing. This is valuable for model weights, prompts, regulated records, proprietary source code, and other data that cannot be exposed to the infrastructure operator.

Protection is meaningful only if the GPU is inside the boundary. Some confidential VM offerings protect CPU memory while leaving an attached accelerator outside that protection. The provider must state explicitly whether GPU memory and GPU computation are included, which driver stack is supported, and how the VM verifies that the expected mode is active.

Microsoft Azure example: NCCadsH100v5

Microsoft’s documentation identifies the NCCadsH100v5-series as using AMD 4th Gen EPYC processors with SEV-SNP and NVIDIA H100 GPUs. It says the TEE spans the confidential VM and the attached GPU. The documentation also specifies compatible operating-system images and capabilities such as secure mounting and attestation support.

Google Cloud example: Confidential GPUs

Google Cloud describes confidential GPUs as using hardware-based encryption and isolation to protect data during GPU processing. Its Confidential VM overview says NVIDIA Confidential Computing extends hardware-based TEE protection to attached NVIDIA GPUs.

Before relying on that protection, verify the exact Google Cloud service, GPU type, machine configuration, image, and region. Confirm that your intended framework and drivers are supported in confidential mode and that the deployment exposes the attestation information your workload needs.

Require attestation, not just an icon or label

Attestation lets software establish that it is running on genuine hardware with an expected firmware and confidential-environment state. It can detect a substituted device, altered firmware, disabled protection, or an unexpected measurement before secrets are released.

Ask these questions:

  • Is an attestation report generated for the actual VM and GPU combination?
  • Which hardware, firmware, image, and configuration measurements are included?
  • Who signs the evidence, and how does your application validate the signing chain?
  • Can your workload obtain and verify attestation automatically during deployment?
  • Can key release be conditioned on a matching measurement, rather than relying on a manual check?
  • What happens when firmware, drivers, or images change?

Documentation about a platform’s attestation capability is not proof that your selected configuration produces verifiable evidence. Perform a test deployment and retain a sample report, validation procedure, and failure behavior in your security records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate encryption and key ownership across the lifecycle

Encryption claims are incomplete without key management. Use a written inventory covering boot disks, local NVMe or scratch space, network volumes, object storage, snapshots, backups, logs, and exported model artifacts.

Control Evidence to request Decision point
Encryption at rest Services and storage classes encrypted, including temporary and backup copies Does every location holding sensitive data have coverage?
Key ownership Provider-managed versus customer-controlled keys; hardware-security-module details where applicable Can your organization prevent provider personnel from using keys?
Issuance and access Identity checks, approval workflow, logging, and least-privilege policy Are key requests attributable to a person or service?
Rotation Rotation interval, versioning behavior, and re-encryption process Will rotation interrupt jobs or leave old copies readable?
Revocation and deletion Emergency disablement, scheduled destruction, and evidence of completion Can access be stopped quickly when a tenant, employee, or device is compromised?

NVIDIA’s AI cloud requirements call for key and certificate lifecycle protections and encryption at rest. Treat that document as a benchmark for questions, not as an independent finding about any particular provider.

Check isolation and network exposure

GPU workers often need access to package registries, datasets, control APIs, and monitoring systems. Every additional path is an opportunity for data exfiltration or administrative compromise.

Tenant and host isolation

Ask how the provider separates tenants on the GPU, CPU, memory bus, storage devices, and management plane. Determine whether GPUs are dedicated, partitioned, or multiplexed; whether a reset clears device memory; and whether host administrators can attach debugging tools or inspect processes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Private management paths

Management interfaces should be private or tightly restricted. Request the architecture for:

  • Administrative SSH or remote-console access.
  • Metadata and identity endpoints.
  • Control-plane APIs and orchestration services.
  • Telemetry, crash dumps, and support bundles.
  • Provider access during troubleshooting.

Confirm firewall or equivalent filtering, egress controls, private service endpoints, and logging. If public access is unavoidable, require narrowly scoped source ranges, short-lived credentials, multifactor authentication, and a documented exception process.

Demand a documented data-sanitization process

Deletion is not complete when a virtual machine disappears from the console. Ask how the provider sanitizes:

  • GPU framebuffer and device memory after a job or reset.
  • System RAM and CPU caches when a VM terminates.
  • Local disks, ephemeral volumes, and swap space.
  • Network-attached volumes, snapshots, and backups.
  • Hardware removed for repair, recycling, or reassignment.

Request the sanitization method, trigger, responsible team, verification evidence, and retention period for logs. Clarify what happens after forced termination, hardware failure, abandoned resources, and support access. If the provider cannot explain how GPU memory is cleared between tenants, classify that as an unresolved isolation risk rather than assuming a standard VM wipe is sufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret audits and compliance reports by scope

A compliance acronym is useful only when its scope matches your workload. Obtain the report or certificate and check:

  • The exact service and infrastructure included.
  • Data centers, regions, and subcontractors covered.
  • The reporting period and any exceptions or complementary customer controls.
  • Whether GPU hardware, confidential-computing services, storage, and support operations are in scope.
  • Whether the report addresses the data type and geography your contract requires.

NVIDIA’s AI cloud requirements specify SOC 2 Type 1 or better across stated service and infrastructure scope. This is a vendor-published requirement, not a measured performance statistic or proof that a particular provider has satisfied it. Ask for the provider’s independent report and read its boundaries yourself.

Map the shared-responsibility boundary

Cloud security is divided between provider and customer. NVIDIA’s data-processing addendum says customers must independently decide whether the described technical and organizational measures meet their requirements and remain responsible for controls on components they control.

Make the division explicit in a control matrix:

Area Provider may operate Customer must configure or operate
Physical and hardware security Facilities, host hardware, firmware supply chain, disposal Validate attestation and approved hardware measurements
Identity and access Control-plane identity service and administrative processes Users, roles, multifactor authentication, service accounts, and credential rotation
Images and drivers Qualified confidential images and documented driver support Patch, harden, sign, and approve the image and workload software
Network Virtual-network primitives and provider backbone Subnets, routes, firewalls, private endpoints, egress policy, and monitoring
Data Storage encryption options and deletion mechanisms Classification, key policy, retention, application deletion, and backup handling
Monitoring and response Platform logs and incident notification Alerting, investigation, evidence preservation, and breach response

Have legal, security, and engineering owners sign off on every customer-side control before production. A technically strong provider cannot compensate for an exposed identity key, an unpatched image, or an unrestricted egress rule managed by your team.

A practical provider-evaluation procedure

  1. Define the workload. Document data classification, residency, retention, threat model, required GPU performance, and contractual obligations.
  2. Freeze the configuration. Write down SKU, GPU, image, drivers, region, storage, network, and confidential mode.
  3. Send a standardized evidence request. Ask for confidential-boundary details, attestation workflow, encryption and key procedures, isolation design, sanitization evidence, audit reports, and responsibility documentation.
  4. Verify the evidence. Match every claim to the exact SKU, image, region, and service. Reject answers that apply only to a broad platform family.
  5. Test a non-production deployment. Validate attestation, image measurements, private networking, firewall rules, key release, logging, and deletion behavior.
  6. Score unresolved risks. Record missing evidence, compensating controls, owner, deadline, and whether the gap blocks production.
  7. Recheck before launch and renewal. GPU availability, supported images, regions, firmware, and report scope change; repeat the review after material changes.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing a compliance badge

Problem: A certificate is treated as proof that your GPU service and region are covered.
Correction: Read the scope, period, exceptions, and complementary customer controls; obtain written confirmation for the selected service.

Assuming every GPU is confidential

Problem: A provider’s confidential-VM page is applied to unrelated GPU SKUs.
Correction: Verify the exact GPU, image, driver, region, and capacity, then test attestation.

Ignoring temporary data

Problem: Teams protect the primary volume but overlook scratch space, swap, logs, snapshots, or GPU memory.
Correction: Inventory every copy and require a sanitization procedure for termination and hardware replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving the customer side undefined

Problem: The provider is expected to secure identity, images, and egress rules that your team controls.
Correction: Maintain a signed responsibility matrix and monitor each customer-operated control.

Trusting documentation without deployment evidence

Problem: Marketing language is accepted without proving the running instance matches it.
Correction: Capture attestation, image measurements, network policy, key events, and deletion logs from a test deployment.

Decision framework

Eliminate a candidate if any of these conditions apply:

  • The provider will not identify the exact configuration covered by its claims.
  • GPU processing is outside the confidential boundary when your threat model requires in-use protection.
  • Attestation is unavailable or cannot be independently verified.
  • Key ownership, administrator access, or revocation procedures are unspecified.
  • Tenant-memory and storage sanitization is undocumented.
  • Audit scope excludes the service, region, or infrastructure handling your data.
  • Customer responsibilities cannot be implemented with your identity, network, and monitoring controls.

Among candidates that pass, select the one with the smallest evidence gap and the clearest operational ownership—not the one with the broadest security slogan. Keep the evidence package with your architecture and procurement records so a future GPU, image, or region change triggers a deliberate reapproval.
