Choose a Samsung phone by your budget, preferred form factor and the features you will actually use—not by a headline about the company’s quarterly results. Samsung’s mobile-related business reported an operating loss in Q2 2026, but the figure combines its Mobile eXperience and Networks businesses; it does not show that a particular Galaxy phone is a bad purchase or that its support will end. Start with a firm total-price limit, decide between a conventional phone and a foldable, then compare specific models sold in your country for price, storage, warranty and update terms.

What does it mean that Samsung’s smartphone business is struggling?

The evidence points to profitability pressure, not a simple story of a company abandoning phones. In its Q2 2026 results, Samsung reported KRW 33.2 trillion in consolidated revenue and an operating loss of KRW 0.7 trillion for its combined Mobile eXperience (MX) and Networks businesses. Samsung said revenue grew year over year on Galaxy S26 sales and strong Galaxy A-series momentum, while earnings declined because of elevated component costs across the industry. Those figures are for MX and Networks together, not a handset-only income statement.

That distinction matters when deciding what to buy. A segment’s quarterly result is not a direct measure of an individual phone’s reliability, usefulness or value. It also does not, by itself, establish that Samsung will stop supporting phones already sold. Samsung’s results say the company planned to push sales led by its S26 and Z8 series and pursue efficiency measures to mitigate rising costs. That is management’s stated plan, not a guarantee about future prices, product availability or support.

There is also evidence of continued market presence. Samsung’s 1Q 2026 interim report attributes smartphone unit market-share figures to TechInsights: 21.3% in 1Q 2026, 19.2% in 2025 and 18.3% in 2024. These figures are reported by Samsung from TechInsights; they describe share, not profit or the quality of any one model. Samsung’s same report forecasts that 2026 smartphone demand would decrease slightly to the 140-million-unit range as higher component costs push average selling prices upward. That is a forecast, not a final count of realized 2026 demand.

A separate report needs even more caution. In October 2026, Android Central attributed to Korean outlet Money Today an alleged supplier request for a 20–30% smartphone production reduction in Q4 2026, with output potentially falling from an earlier expected 270 million toward the 200-million range. Samsung did not confirm that request in the official material reviewed here. It is not proof of shortages, an imminent end to phone support or a reason to buy before comparing prices and terms.

Which Samsung phone should you buy?

There is no single answer without a country, current price and buyer profile. Samsung’s U.S. catalog accessed in October 2026 lists the Galaxy S26 Ultra, S26 and S26+, S26 FE, Z Fold8 and Z Flip8, and A57 5G, A37 5G, A27 5G and A17 5G. This is a U.S. catalog snapshot, not a worldwide lineup. Samsung’s catalog confirms those models and their product positioning, but the available information does not establish a complete, comparable set of current prices and specifications.

Use the range to narrow your search, then verify the exact local variant. The categories below are starting points for a decision, not claims that one tier is always cheaper or better value in every country.

Starting point Consider it if… Check before choosing
Galaxy S26 You want a conventional S-series flagship and do not have a specific reason to move up to a larger or more feature-focused model. Current local price, available storage, regional model number and the features that distinguish it from S26+ and Ultra.
Galaxy S26+ You are considering a larger-display S26-family option. Whether the larger display is worth the price difference in your market; do not assume a U.S. launch-price gap is still the local gap.
Galaxy S26 Ultra You have a concrete use for its premium camera or zoom capability, up to 1TB storage, or built-in Privacy Display. Whether those features matter enough to justify its local price over S26 or S26+.
Galaxy S26 FE You are considering an S26-family option positioned separately from the standard S26 models. Compare its current price, storage, features and support against the exact alternatives available locally. One independent review noted tradeoffs, but that is not a full comparative test.
Galaxy A-series You are looking for a candidate in Samsung’s value-oriented range. Compare the exact A-series model and local price against discounted older S-series phones, including warranty, condition and remaining support.
Galaxy Z Fold8 or Z Flip8 You specifically want a folding-screen format and expect to use that flexibility. Confirm local price, availability, warranty and support. Do not choose a foldable merely because it is part of the current lineup.

Samsung’s February 25, 2026 U.S. announcement set general availability for the S26 family beginning March 11, 2026. Its historical U.S. starting prices were $899.99 for S26, $1,099.99 for S26+ and $1,299.99 for S26 Ultra. Samsung listed 256GB and 512GB storage for S26 and S26+, and 256GB, 512GB and 1TB for Ultra. These are launch figures, not guaranteed prices or configurations in October, in another country or through a particular carrier. The Associated Press reported rounded U.S. launch prices of $899, $1,099 and $1,299, describing increases for base and mid-tier models while Ultra held its price against the prior generation. Those rounded figures are not current street prices either.

Set a budget before comparing models

Decide on the maximum amount you are willing to pay after trade-in and carrier terms. Compare unlocked and financed offers on equivalent terms rather than treating a low monthly installment as the phone’s full cost. A promotion can change the best choice, but only if the required plan, trade-in condition, bill credits and payment period work for you. The available evidence does not establish October 2026 street prices, live stock or a universal best-value winner, so check the offer in the country where you will buy.

For each offer, write down the full amount you will pay, the duration of any financing, required service-plan conditions, trade-in assumptions, and whether the quoted price is for the exact storage and regional version you want. Compare like with like: a lower-priced model with less storage is not automatically the better deal if you would otherwise need more capacity, and a discount does not compensate for a warranty or carrier mismatch.

Set aside room in the budget for ownership terms as well as the handset. Check the return window, warranty coverage, repair options and any optional protection plan. Samsung Care+ terms vary by market and eligibility. Samsung’s UK newsroom described availability across 17 European markets and coverage that included accidental damage, unlimited repairs, walk-in service, extended warranty and theft/loss protection. Those details do not establish the terms available in your country; check the local plan before counting its coverage or cost.

Choose the form factor before the feature race

Conventional Galaxy phone

If you want a familiar, non-folding phone, compare the S26 family with the A-series and discounted older S-series models actually sold where you live. Within the S26 family, the useful question is not simply which model has the most features. Ask whether a larger display, camera or zoom capability, storage tier or Privacy Display solves a real need for you. Samsung identifies the built-in Privacy Display as an S26 Ultra feature. Its UK release also highlights Nightography video and Super Steady’s horizontal lock option. Those are manufacturer-described capabilities; consider whether you will use them, rather than treating a feature list as proof of better results for your own needs.

The Galaxy A57 and A37, along with A27 and A17, are candidates to compare in Samsung’s A-series range. The lineup alone does not prove that an A-series model is cheaper than an older flagship or the better buy in a particular market. Put the exact local price, storage, device condition, warranty and remaining support side by side before deciding.

Foldable Galaxy phone

Consider the Z Fold8 or Z Flip8 only if you want the folding-screen format and have a reason to use it—for example, the Fold form’s multitasking potential or the Flip form’s compact folding design. This is a form-factor choice, not a default upgrade over a conventional phone. Establish the local price and warranty first, then decide whether the format is worth the difference to you. The available catalog information does not provide a complete, comparable price table or prove which option offers better value.

Compare the exact alternatives you can buy

For a value-focused decision, compare a new A-series phone with an older discounted S-series phone rather than assuming the newest model in a lower tier is the obvious choice. Use the same checklist for every candidate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Price and terms: Record the full local price after trade-in, financing and plan requirements. Check whether a discount is conditional or time-limited.
  • Storage: Match the listed storage to your needs. Confirm the exact configuration; the S26-family U.S. launch storage options do not guarantee that every capacity is sold in every market.
  • Condition: For used or refurbished devices, confirm the grade, battery state, included warranty and return policy. Do not compare a refurbished phone’s headline price with a new phone as though their condition and protection were identical.
  • Model and network fit: Verify the regional model number, carrier bands and eSIM support with your carrier. Compatibility can vary by model and market; the available information does not establish it for your particular carrier.
  • Support: Find the product-specific update commitment for the exact regional model, not a general claim inferred from another Galaxy generation or country.
  • Repair and returns: Check local warranty, repair access, return window and the terms of any protection plan before purchase.

This comparison is especially important when an older flagship is discounted. A lower price may make it attractive, but the price alone does not settle whether its remaining support, condition, storage and warranty suit you. Likewise, the A-series label does not guarantee a better deal than an older S-series device. Choose from the actual offers and protections available to you.

Check update support by model and region

Support commitments are a material part of the purchase, but the available Samsung statements use different terms. Samsung’s February 2026 U.S. announcement says the S26 series receives seven years of security updates. A Samsung UK S-series buyer guide accessed during research states three years of Android updates and four years of security updates for the S generations it lists. These statements differ in scope or wording; they should not be blended into one universal policy for every Galaxy S phone or every region.

Before buying, look up the exact phone’s support page or product-specific regional terms and distinguish Android-version updates from security updates. Confirm which model and market the commitment covers. If you are buying an older or refurbished phone, check the remaining support period for that specific device rather than relying on the original launch promise alone.

Use this decision process

  1. Set your maximum total price. Include trade-in assumptions, financing terms and any required service plan. Compare offers on equivalent terms.
  2. Choose conventional or foldable. Make the form-factor decision before comparing processors, cameras or model names. A foldable only makes sense if you want its folding-screen format.
  3. Name the features that would change your choice. Decide whether you need a compact standard model, a larger display, premium camera or zoom features, 1TB storage, or the S26 Ultra’s Privacy Display. If you cannot name a use for an upgrade, do not assume you need it.
  4. Shortlist models sold in your market. Use Samsung’s local catalog as a list of candidates, not as evidence of a worldwide lineup or a complete price comparison.
  5. Compare A-series and discounted older S-series options. Use the same criteria for price, storage, condition, warranty, battery state on used or refurbished devices, and remaining support.
  6. Verify the purchase details. Confirm model number, carrier bands and eSIM support; check local stock, return policy, warranty, repair coverage and current promotion terms.
  7. Confirm support before paying. Read the regional, model-specific Android and security update commitment, especially for an older device.

What to know about the S26 FE review

Android Central’s S26 FE review reported that the reviewer found tradeoffs including a display reused from recent FE models and slow charging. Treat those as observations from one independent review, not as a full comparison of the S26 FE with every alternative and not as hands-on testing conducted for this article. If charging speed or display changes matter to you, consult a current review of the exact regional version and compare it with the other phones on your shortlist.

Is a Samsung phone still worth buying?

It can be, if a specific Galaxy model fits your needs, budget and local purchase terms. The Q2 operating loss is meaningful business context, but it is not a verdict on a handset. The practical way to manage uncertainty is to buy based on verifiable details: exact model, price, support commitment, network compatibility, warranty and return terms. No available evidence here establishes that every Samsung phone is a good value—or that the company’s reported pressure makes every Samsung phone a poor one.
