Choose by the exact model’s published update policy, not by the Galaxy family name. Compare how many major OS upgrades Samsung promises, how long security updates are scheduled, and how much of that support period is likely to remain from the phone’s launch date. Then verify the full model and local carrier or market: Samsung says availability and timing can vary.
What to compare before you buy
Samsung’s update promises can cover two different things: major operating-system upgrades and security updates. A promise of several years of security updates does not, by itself, establish the same number of Android or One UI version upgrades. Check both figures for the specific model.
- OS upgrade count: The number of major OS generations Samsung says the phone will receive.
- Security-update duration: The stated support period for security patches. Check whether Samsung specifies a cadence, such as monthly or quarterly; the cited policy statements do not establish one cadence for every model.
- Time remaining: The launch date and the date from which the support commitment runs. A later purchase does not restart that clock.
- Exact model and location: Confirm the full model or SKU, country, and carrier. A family name alone does not establish identical support for every variant.
- Price: Compare the current price of the exact configuration with its remaining support horizon; price changes and is not part of Samsung’s update commitment.
What Samsung’s published policies say
These are manufacturer policy statements, not independent measurements of the consumer benefit of longer support. Samsung’s commitments have changed over time and differ by model; the figures below should be read with their stated scope.

| Models or policy | Published support statement | Scope to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S25 series | Seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch | Samsung’s January 22, 2025 announcement says timing may vary by device model, network provider, and market. Samsung Global Newsroom |
| Galaxy S24 series | Seven years of OS and security updates | Samsung’s US S-series guide states this period; do not assume the US guide establishes terms for every region or variant. Samsung US |
| Galaxy S23, S22, S21, S20, and S10 families | Four years of OS upgrades and five years of security updates | The same Samsung US guide lists these periods and cautions that older models may no longer be supported. Check current eligibility for the exact device. Samsung US |
| Selected Galaxy devices announced in 2022 | Four generations of One UI upgrades and up to five years of security updates | Samsung Singapore’s announcement covers selected models, including named S21/S22 and Z Fold3/Z Flip3 devices; it is not a promise for every Galaxy phone. Samsung Singapore |
| Galaxy mobile devices, general statement | Security-update support is “up to 7 years” | Samsung’s 2025 Sustainability Report also says availability and timing may vary by product and market. “Up to” is not a seven-year promise for every Galaxy phone. Samsung 2025 Sustainability Report |
How to estimate the support you’ll have left
Start with Samsung’s stated commitment start point, not your purchase date. For the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung says the seven-year security period and seven OS generations run from global launch. Buying a phone later in its lifecycle therefore leaves less of that stated period ahead. Do not infer an exact end date or remaining OS-upgrade count unless Samsung provides enough model-specific information to establish it.

How to check a model before purchasing
- Shortlist phones that fit your budget and hardware needs.
- Find each model’s official policy. Record its OS-upgrade count and security-update duration separately. Use a policy statement for that model, rather than assuming another phone in the same family has the same terms.
- Note the original launch date and the commitment’s stated starting point. Estimate how much support may remain; do not count from the day you buy it.
- Verify the full variant locally. Check Samsung’s support information for your country and the carrier’s information for the exact model. Samsung says availability and timing can vary by product, market, and network provider.
- Check current update eligibility. Samsung rollout notices list selected models. A phone appearing in a current rollout announcement shows eligibility for that rollout, not a new or longer future support commitment. For example, Samsung’s September 15, 2025 One UI 8 announcement names selected S, Z, A, and tablet devices. Samsung Newsroom US
- Weigh the remaining support against the price and your other requirements. A longer stated period can matter, but it does not replace checking the model’s fit, local availability, and current cost.
How to avoid misleading assumptions
- Do not treat “Galaxy” or an S, Z, or A family name as a support guarantee for every model or regional variant.
- Do not interpret “up to seven years” as a blanket commitment for every Galaxy device.
- Do not equate security-update years with major OS-upgrade generations.
- Do not assume an update currently rolling out proves how long future updates will continue.
- For older models, check whether support is still active; Samsung’s US guide warns that older listed models may no longer be supported.
Samsung’s US S-series guide is useful for its explicit support statements, but it is US-oriented. Confirm terms and current availability for the precise device in your market rather than relying on a broad family-level summary.
