For most homes, a “whole-house VPN” means a compatible router configured as a VPN client to a commercial VPN provider. Devices connected through that router can use the VPN without each needing its own app. The right choice depends on your exact router model and firmware, provider compatibility, desired device controls, internet speed, and Wi-Fi coverage—not just whether a box says it supports VPN.
What a whole-home VPN does—and what it does not
A router running a VPN client connects to a remote VPN service and routes household devices through that connection. TP-Link describes this setup as connecting the router and devices on its network to a remote VPN server (TP-Link setup guidance); ASUS similarly says its VPN feature can provide VPN access to home-network devices without installing VPN software on each one (ASUS support).
Do not confuse this with a router’s VPN server feature. A VPN server can let you connect back to your home network while away. NETGEAR’s Orbi manual explicitly says its described OpenVPN feature does not make the router a client to an external VPN provider and does not encrypt traffic between the home network and the internet (NETGEAR Orbi manual).
How to choose the right router
Confirm client mode, protocol, and exact model
Look for VPN client support for the protocol and configuration your provider supplies. VPN support varies by model, hardware revision, and firmware. Before buying or setting anything up, confirm the exact router version and firmware against the provider’s supported protocols and configuration instructions. ASUS advises users to confirm the VPN connection type with their provider (ASUS setup guidance).

Supported protocols can include WireGuard or OpenVPN, but a router supporting a protocol does not by itself establish that it will work with every provider. Check whether the provider supplies compatible configuration details and credentials. NordVPN’s router guidance, for example, describes importing configuration files and credentials after checking router protocol compatibility (NordVPN router guidance).
Decide whether all devices or selected devices use the VPN
Some routers send all connected devices through the VPN client; others let you choose which devices use the VPN and which stay on the normal internet connection. ASUS describes VPN Fusion for assigning selected devices, but says availability depends on the router model. When that feature is unavailable, the routing behavior may apply to all devices instead (ASUS setup guidance). Check this before purchase if you need, for example, one device on the VPN and another on the regular connection.

Assess VPN performance separately from Wi-Fi coverage
A router’s VPN capability does not establish its speed under VPN load or guarantee a wireless signal throughout a house. Compare model-specific VPN throughput only when the measurement includes clear test conditions; the available comparison does not provide a comparable VPN-speed figure for the product discussed below. Also assess Wi-Fi generation, home layout, and whether you need separate mesh access points. A VPN tunnel cannot extend Wi-Fi coverage by itself.
Check setup, maintenance, and failure behavior
Router VPN setup usually involves selecting the client mode and protocol, entering provider credentials or importing a configuration file, and choosing which devices use the tunnel if the router supports that control. Follow the exact model’s manual because menus and capabilities differ. Keep router firmware maintained as part of ordinary network security. Do not assume a router will block traffic if the VPN connection drops: the available product information does not establish comparable kill-switch behavior across routers, so verify that specific feature if it is essential.

A specific option to investigate: GL.iNet Flint 3
The GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300) is one concrete candidate: RTINGS’ comparison, updated September 28, 2026, describes it as supporting WireGuard and OpenVPN in both VPN client and server modes (RTINGS VPN router comparison). That makes it worth checking for a commercial VPN client setup, but it is not a universal best router. Confirm the current hardware revision, firmware, your provider’s configuration compatibility, and whether its Wi-Fi coverage and routing controls suit your home before choosing it.
Preconfigured VPN-router options are another category: NordVPN identifies FlashRouters as a partner offering preconfigured routers (NordVPN router guidance). Check current availability and provider compatibility directly; the fact that a router is preconfigured does not establish that it supports every service or meets your coverage needs.

Setup checklist
- Identify the goal: use a commercial VPN for household internet traffic (VPN client), or connect remotely back to your home network (VPN server).
- Verify the router: check the exact model, hardware revision, and firmware manual for VPN client support. TP-Link separates VPN server and client scenarios and directs users to the product manual for model-specific details (TP-Link setup guidance).
- Ask the VPN provider what it supports: confirm the protocol, required configuration file, and credentials for router setup.
- Choose routing behavior: determine whether the router sends all devices through the tunnel or supports device-by-device assignment.
- Plan the wireless network independently: verify coverage for your home and whether mesh access points are required.
- Configure and validate: follow the router’s own instructions, then check that the intended devices use the VPN and that other devices follow the intended route.
- Maintain and prepare for outages: keep firmware current and confirm whether the router blocks traffic or falls back to the normal connection if the VPN disconnects.
