The right robot lawn mower is determined by the grass it must actually cut, the steepest slope it must cross, and the way your yard is divided—not by your property’s total lot size. Measure mowable lawn after removing buildings, patios, paths and beds; record the maximum incline and where it occurs; then compare those measurements with each mower’s area rating, slope limits, traction, navigation system, zone support and installation requirements. A manufacturer’s maximum is a specification under stated conditions, not a promise that every yard will be completed equally well.

1. Measure the lawn the mower will really maintain

Start with a sketch or satellite image of the property. Outline every grass area the robot is expected to cut, then exclude the house footprint, driveway, paved patios, ornamental beds, ponds and any other permanent surface. The result is the mowable area that should be compared with a mower’s rated capacity.

Calculate each grass section

For a simple rectangular section, multiply length by width. Divide an irregular lawn into rectangles and triangles, calculate each part, and add the results. If one section is separated from another, record it as its own zone instead of treating the entire property as one continuous rectangle.

  • Include: all grass the mower can physically reach and is intended to maintain.
  • Exclude: buildings, driveways, paths, patios, beds, water features and permanently fenced-off areas.
  • Record uncertainty: if your measurement is approximate, leave headroom rather than selecting a mower whose published maximum barely exceeds it.

Read the capacity figure correctly

Capacity figures can be based on different mowing patterns. Husqvarna’s US Automower 420 iQ listing, for example, distinguishes irregular mowing from systematic mowing and gives a capacity of up to one acre for that US-market model. A systematic pattern, a complex layout or frequent obstacles can require more operating time than an open lawn of the same area. Do not turn a maximum-area specification into a guaranteed completion time or runtime.

Dreame’s buying guidance, published May 19, 2026, likewise advises measuring actual mowing area and checking how the maker defines coverage. Verify whether the number assumes a particular mowing mode, daily operating schedule or ideal route. Capacity, battery endurance and charging time are related but not interchangeable specifications.

Allow practical headroom

Leave a margin for areas that are technically grass but difficult to reach, such as narrow strips, corners around trees or a route that the mower must share with another zone. If your measured area is close to the published maximum, compare a larger-capacity model or plan a schedule that the manufacturer explicitly supports. The figure alone does not establish that the robot will finish every zone on your preferred timetable.

2. Measure the steepest terrain, not the average grade

A yard that feels mostly level can still contain one short bank that exceeds a mower’s limit. Measure the steepest section the robot would cross, including slopes beside boundaries and the approach to the charging station.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the percentage-slope formula

Husqvarna states the calculation as: Slope (%) = vertical height / horizontal distance × 100. Measure the horizontal run, measure the rise over that run, divide rise by run, and multiply by 100. For example, a 0.8-metre rise over a 4-metre horizontal run is a 20% slope (0.8 ÷ 4 × 100).

A phone inclinometer can provide a quick check, but use a tape measure and a level, or another repeatable method, when a result is near the mower’s limit. Measure several points because a bank may steepen at its edge. Record the direction of the slope and whether the mower must turn across it.

Check both work-area and boundary limits

Manufacturers may publish separate limits for the open work area and for the strip near a boundary. Husqvarna’s support information lists 40% work-area and 15% boundary limits for several Automower families, with higher limits for certain all-wheel-drive models. Those values apply only to the models and product families named on that support page; limits can differ by country, revision and exact model.

Why a headline incline is not the whole answer

Honda’s guidance notes that turning across a slope, mowing near an edge, wet grass and the installation layout can make a site more demanding than a straight climb. Traction depends on wheel tread, drive system and weight distribution. A short, wet, rutted bank with an obstacle at the top may be unsuitable even when its measured percentage is below the published maximum.

3. Match drive and traction to the ground

For a flat, firm lawn, a conventional two-wheel drive system may be adequate. Slopes, soft soil and uneven ground call for closer examination of the drive layout and the maker’s terrain instructions.

Factors that change real-world grip

  • Surface moisture: Honda warns that wet grass reduces grip for any mower. Schedule operation when the surface is firm if the model’s instructions permit it.
  • Tread and wheel diameter: Deeper tread and larger wheels can help maintain contact, but they do not override the mower’s rated grade.
  • Weight distribution: The location of the drive wheels and battery affects how much load remains on the driven wheels while climbing or turning.
  • Ruts and loose soil: A measured slope does not describe holes, ridges or soil that can cause a wheel to unload.
  • Turning space: A mower may climb in a straight line yet slip when it changes direction on the bank.

Traction accessories

Husqvarna says most of its models offer an optional terrain kit with heavy rear wheels and wheel brushes, although availability is model-dependent. Treat such a kit as a compatibility check, not a universal upgrade: confirm the exact mower, wheel design and regional accessory list before buying. Accessories cannot make an area safe when it exceeds the mower’s slope or boundary rating.

4. Choose navigation that fits your property

Navigation determines how the mower knows where it may travel, how it divides work, and how it behaves when trees or buildings interfere with signals. No single approach is best for every yard.

Navigation approach What defines the mowing area Conditions to verify Typical fit
Boundary wire A physical wire installed around the perimeter and exclusions Installation time, buried or pinned wire, breaks, future landscaping changes Properties where a reliable wired boundary is practical and signal conditions are difficult
Satellite positioning or RTK Virtual boundaries and mapped routes derived from satellite signals Clear sky view, correction-signal availability, tree cover, building shadowing and antenna placement Open yards where accurate positioning can be maintained
LiDAR mapping Sensor-generated map and virtual boundaries Sensor line of sight, reflective or cluttered objects, app mapping process and channel layout Owners seeking wire-free mapping where the model supports the property’s complexity
Vision-based mapping Cameras and software identify lawn edges and obstacles Lighting, vegetation changes, camera cleanliness and the maker’s supported boundary method Yards suited to the model’s camera assumptions and maintenance requirements

These categories describe operating conditions, not a performance ranking. A satellite system can struggle under dense trees; a camera system can be affected by changing light; a wire-free system still needs a usable route between zones. Read the exact installation manual rather than assuming that a feature name guarantees coverage.

Satellite and virtual mapping

Husqvarna’s US Automower 420 iQ uses EPOS satellite positioning and virtual mapping. The manufacturer lists capacity up to one acre and slope capability up to 45% within the boundary area for that listing. These are US-market manufacturer specifications and should be checked again for the exact model year, firmware and sales region.

LiDAR and multi-zone controls

Segway describes app-based multi-zone controls and a wire-free i2 model that uses LiDAR mapping. It separately markets an i2 AWD model for complex terrain. Those are manufacturer feature claims, not independent comparative test results. Confirm how the chosen model creates safe channels, how zones are edited, and whether every zone has a route that the mower can follow without crossing forbidden areas.

5. Map zones, passages and obstacles before buying

Draw the property as the mower will experience it, not as a real-estate plot. Mark every grass zone, the intended route between zones, the charging station, trees, play equipment, low branches, drains, retaining walls and places where people or pets may leave objects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate zones and transport paths

Some systems let you create multiple work areas in an app; others rely on physical guide wires or a continuous boundary. Husqvarna says the 420 iQ can use mapped work areas and transport paths. Segway describes app-managed zones and safe channels connecting them. Check whether a channel must have a particular width, whether the mower can cross a paved connector, and whether a zone can be reached automatically from the dock.

Narrow passages

Dreame’s buying guide identifies narrow passages, tree cover and zone layout as selection factors, but its examples are manufacturer guidance rather than a universal passage-width rule. Measure the narrowest point, account for wall clearance and turning room, and use the exact model’s passage specification. A robot that fits through a straight gap may still fail if it cannot turn or if boundary wires leave less usable width.

Obstacles and changing conditions

Permanent obstacles should be represented in the map or enclosed with the specified boundary method. Seasonal objects such as paddling pools, furniture and children’s toys need a routine for removal or temporary exclusion. Low-hanging branches, exposed roots and drainage channels can affect both navigation and traction even when they do not appear in the area calculation.

6. Install a sloped yard conservatively

Installation choices can turn a marginal slope into a reliable route—or create repeated slipping and boundary errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep over-limit ground out of the work area. Exclude any bank beyond the model’s stated work-area limit. Do not rely on software settings to compensate for a physical grade the mower is not designed to climb.
  2. Move an outer boundary onto flatter ground. Husqvarna recommends relocating the boundary where an edge is too steep. This sacrifices a strip of grass but gives the mower a safer stopping and turning area.
  3. Choose the dock for approach and departure. Place the station on firm, reasonably level ground with a route that does not force a sharp turn on a bank. Follow the model’s required clearances and orientation.
  4. Route guide wires or virtual paths deliberately. Adjust guide-wire placement or mapped paths to suit the installation type. The best route is not always the shortest route; it must leave room for the mower to align, turn and return.
  5. Keep steep turns away from wet conditions. Husqvarna warns that turning around obstacles on steep slopes can increase slipping risk, especially when wet. Honda likewise advises careful docking and boundary layout and excluding very steep, heavily rutted or obstructed inclines when appropriate.
  6. Recheck after landscaping. New edging, soil movement, tree roots or a changed path can alter the usable width and slope. Update the map or wire layout instead of assuming the original installation remains valid.

7. Compare candidate models with one worksheet

Use the same measured inputs for every candidate. A side-by-side worksheet prevents a large headline capacity from hiding a poor fit on slope or navigation.

Comparison field What to record Why it matters
Mowable area Your measured grass area, with excluded surfaces removed Shows whether the capacity figure applies to the actual workload
Capacity basis Irregular or systematic mode, and any schedule assumptions Prevents unlike capacity numbers from being treated as equivalent
Work-area slope Maximum measured percentage and mower limit Determines whether open banks are within specification
Boundary slope Steepest edge and separate boundary limit Edges often have a lower permitted grade
Drive and traction Drive layout, tread, wheel options and terrain guidance Indicates how the mower may handle wet or uneven ground
Navigation Wire, satellite/RTK, LiDAR, vision or combination Must match tree cover, buildings and signal conditions
Zones and passages Number of zones, channel method and narrowest measured gap Confirms that separated lawns can be reached and managed
Installation equipment Included wire, anchors, antennas, beacons and dock requirements Reveals additional work and compatibility constraints
Service items Blade replacement process and compatible traction accessories Shows what routine maintenance the installation will require

Manufacturer pages are appropriate for specifications and installation limits, but they do not establish independent comparative performance. Treat claims about complex-terrain capability as claims to verify against your measured site, not as a substitute for a site assessment.

8. What the published examples actually show

Husqvarna Automower 420 iQ

Husqvarna’s US product information identifies EPOS satellite positioning and virtual mapping, lists capacity up to one acre, and gives slope capability up to 45% within the boundary area. The same listing explains that capacity varies with mowing mode. The figures apply to the US listing and should be rechecked for the exact model year, software and regional configuration. They do not prove that every one-acre yard, especially one with many zones or shaded signal areas, will perform identically.

Honda Miimo range

Honda UK lists the Miimo HRM 1000, HRM 1500, HRM 2500 and HRM 4000 as handling slopes up to 47%, while the Miimo 40 and Miimo 70 are listed up to 27%. Honda’s guide describes the HRM range for lawns from 1,000 to 4,000 square metres. These are UK manufacturer figures, not a cross-brand test or a guarantee that a wet, irregular or heavily obstructed lawn will behave like a laboratory-style slope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use these examples

Use the numbers as a demonstration of what to look for: area basis, work-area versus boundary grade, market and model revision. Do not rank the products from these figures alone. A model with a higher stated incline can still be a worse choice if its navigation cannot maintain a signal in your tree cover or if its installation method cannot connect your zones.

9. Common mismatches and practical fixes

Symptom Likely mismatch First corrective action
The mower slips while turning on a bank Wet surface, cross-slope turn, inadequate tread or a grade near the limit Keep the route level where possible, operate only in conditions allowed by the manual, clean wheels and reassess the slope
One zone is rarely reached No usable transport path, channel too narrow or boundary layout blocks access Measure the route, adjust the guide wire or virtual channel, and verify the model’s zone rules
Positioning becomes unreliable under trees Satellite or correction signal is obstructed Check antenna/beacon placement and consider a navigation method suited to the shaded layout
The mower repeatedly stops near an edge Boundary grade exceeds the separate edge limit or the turn area is too tight Move the boundary onto flatter ground and provide the required clearance
Coverage falls short of the advertised area Capacity measured under a different mowing mode or an irregular layout consumes more travel time Compare the manufacturer’s capacity basis with your schedule and map, then choose appropriate headroom
New landscaping causes boundary errors Physical wire or virtual map no longer matches the yard Update the installation and remap exclusions before resuming automatic mowing

10. A final pre-purchase checklist

  • Have I measured mowable grass rather than total property area?
  • Did I record the steepest rise and run and calculate its percentage?
  • Did I check separate work-area and boundary limits for the exact model?
  • Will wet grass, ruts, turning or obstacles make the route harder than a straight climb?
  • Does the navigation method suit tree cover, buildings and available signals?
  • Can the mower travel between every zone through a specified channel or guide route?
  • Have I measured the narrowest passage and checked the model’s clearance rule?
  • Is the dock on firm, level ground with a practical approach?
  • Are required wires, antennas, beacons, terrain kits and wheel accessories included and compatible?
  • Am I treating manufacturer specifications as limits to verify, rather than independent proof of performance?

When the measurements are close to a limit, choose the safer installation: exclude the marginal strip, flatten or reroute the approach, and select a model whose rated area and terrain leave useful headroom. That approach produces a more dependable result than choosing by lot size, a single incline number or a feature label.
