The best retro console is the one that contains—or accepts—the games you actually want to play. Choose the library first, then choose between a fixed, plug-and-play Nintendo Classic Edition and the cartridge-based Atari 2600+.
The NES Classic Edition lists 30 built-in NES games, while the Super NES Classic Edition has a separate SNES library. Atari 2600+ is the relevant choice if you own Atari 2600 or 7800 cartridges, because Atari says it plays most of them. All three options support connection to a modern HDMI display, but their power supplies, save systems, multiplayer requirements and expansion limits differ.
Start with the games, not the console
Write down five to ten must-play titles before comparing hardware. A console that looks attractive but lacks those games will be frustrating, especially when its library cannot be expanded.

The Nintendo Classic Mini: NES is designed around a fixed selection of 30 preinstalled NES games. Nintendo’s official product page lists examples such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Dr. Mario, Final Fantasy, PAC-MAN, Castlevania and Mega Man 2. Choose SNES-era games
The Super NES Classic Edition is not an expanded NES system; it has a distinct SNES list. Nintendo’s support list includes Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III, F-ZERO and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Compare your list with the complete Super NES Classic included-game list.
Choose Atari cartridge games
If your collection is made up of Atari 2600 or 7800 cartridges, the Atari 2600+ offers a different ownership model. Atari says it “plays both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges” and includes a 10-in-1 game cartridge. The wording is important: Atari says most original cartridges are supported, not every cartridge. Check the exact title against the compatibility information linked from the official Atari 2600+ product page.

Understand the Nintendo Classic Edition limits
The libraries are fixed
Nintendo states: “No. Additional games cannot be downloaded to the Classic Edition consoles, nor are these consoles compatible with external storage devices.” Treat the published game list as the complete library. There is no supported purchase, download or memory-card route for adding another title.

This makes the buying decision straightforward but unforgiving. If one essential game is missing, do not assume you can add it later. Recheck the official list and the exact edition—NES or Super NES—before spending money.
NES Classic Edition: what the 30-game list means
The NES model is the closer match for many 1980s Nintendo favorites. Its listed games include platformers, role-playing games, action games, arcade conversions and puzzle games, but the important test is whether your personal favorites appear. The official list is the authority; retailer descriptions can omit titles or describe a different regional package.
Super NES Classic Edition: a different generation of games
The SNES model includes games such as Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III, F-ZERO and A Link to the Past. These are not interchangeable with the NES list. If your definition of “classic 1980s games” is strictly NES-era, the SNES unit may contain the wrong library even though it is also a Nintendo mini console.

Nintendo says both Classic Edition systems work with standard HDMI inputs on TV screens and monitors. Connect the console’s HDMI cable to an available HDMI input, select that input on the display and then connect USB power. The HDMI statement does not mean every television has identical picture settings; it means the consoles use the common HDMI input standard rather than an older analogue connection.

Power setup
Nintendo’s support instructions specify a Type-A-to-micro-B USB cable and a 5V/1A adapter. Check the cable and adapter you have before opening the console’s box, particularly if you are buying a used system with missing accessories. Keep the adapter’s output at the specification Nintendo documents rather than substituting an unknown supply.
Two-player requirements
For two-player NES play, Nintendo UK says additional accessories are required and sold separately. Confirm that a second compatible controller or the required accessory is included in the listing you are considering. Do not assume that a single-controller package provides everything needed for multiplayer.
Suspend Points and in-game saves
Each preloaded game has four Suspend Point slots. Games that originally supported their own in-game save feature can retain that behavior as well. Suspend Points are quick snapshots, but Nintendo warns that saving to a Suspend Point—or resuming from one—can overwrite newer in-game progress. A safe routine is to finish the in-game save first, then create a Suspend Point only when you deliberately want a rollback point.
- Use the game’s own save command when the game provides one.
- Exit or pause only after the save has completed.
- Create a Suspend Point for a difficult section or a temporary stopping place.
- Before resuming, check that the Suspend Point is newer than the in-game save you want to keep.
Understand what the Atari 2600+ adds
Cartridge compatibility is the central feature
Atari 2600+ is aimed at people who want physical cartridges rather than a sealed, built-in library. Atari describes support for most Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and includes a 10-in-1 cartridge in the package. “Most” is not the same as universal compatibility: unusual cartridges, specific revisions or accessories may not work. Find the compatibility list through Atari’s official product page and check each cartridge you care about before treating it as supported.

What is included
Atari lists an HDMI cable and a USB-C cable with the console. It does not list a USB-C power adapter, so plan to supply a suitable adapter separately. This is the most likely out-of-box setup problem: a buyer may have the console and HDMI cable but no power source.
Connecting it to a modern TV
Use the supplied HDMI cable between the Atari 2600+ and an HDMI input on the television or monitor. Connect the USB-C cable to an appropriate power adapter, select the correct HDMI input and insert only cartridges confirmed by Atari’s compatibility information. Keep the cartridge contacts clean and insert cartridges with the console powered down if the instructions for your particular cartridge or system require that precaution.
Save expectations
The cited Atari product information does not establish a Suspend Point system or another save feature. Treat the Atari 2600+ as a cartridge-focused system unless the manual for a specific game documents saving. For games that traditionally use passwords or no persistent progress, plan to use those original methods.
Follow this decision path
- Make a must-play list. Separate NES titles, SNES titles and Atari cartridge titles. A mixed list may require more than one system because the Nintendo libraries are fixed and the Atari console follows a different cartridge ecosystem.
- Verify every essential title. Use the official NES list, the official Super NES list and Atari’s compatibility information. Do not rely on a marketplace headline such as “hundreds of games” when the supported list is what determines whether your favorites work.
- Choose the access model. Select NES Classic or Super NES Classic if you want a ready-to-play selection with no cartridge hunting. Select Atari 2600+ if using original Atari cartridges is a primary reason to buy.
- Check expansion expectations. If you expect to download new games or attach external storage, neither Nintendo Classic Edition is suitable because Nintendo explicitly disallows both.
- Check the display and power kit. Confirm that your television has an available HDMI input. For Nintendo, plan for the specified USB power arrangement; for Atari, remember that the USB-C adapter is not listed as included.
- Check multiplayer needs. If two-player NES gaming matters, budget for the separately sold accessory Nintendo identifies as required.
- Check condition and availability. Nintendo’s official product information confirms features, not current new-stock availability. Atari’s official page says the Atari 2600+ is available now and links to regional Amazon listings, but stock, price and condition can change. Compare the actual package contents and avoid paying an unclear premium for used hardware.
Setup checklists
NES Classic Edition or Super NES Classic Edition
- Confirm that the console’s official game list contains your must-play titles.
- Have an HDMI cable and a Type-A-to-micro-B USB power cable available.
- Use a 5V/1A adapter as specified by Nintendo.
- Connect HDMI, select the matching TV input and connect USB power.
- Test one game, create a Suspend Point and verify that you understand the difference between a snapshot and the game’s own save system.
- Obtain the separately sold multiplayer accessory if two-player NES gaming is required.
Atari 2600+
- Check each owned 2600 or 7800 cartridge against Atari’s compatibility information.
- Confirm that the 10-in-1 cartridge is present if buying a complete package.
- Confirm that the HDMI cable and USB-C cable are included.
- Provide a compatible USB-C power adapter because Atari does not list one in the package.
- Connect HDMI and power, select the correct display input and test the included cartridge before inserting valuable original cartridges.
- Use the game’s documented original save or password method; do not assume a modern snapshot feature.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by console name instead of game list
“NES,” “SNES” and “Atari” identify different libraries and physical formats. A familiar brand name cannot tell you whether a particular title is included. Verify the title first, then the hardware.

Assuming a fixed library can be expanded
The Nintendo Classic Editions do not accept downloaded games or external storage. A cheap listing is not a good deal if it lacks the one game you planned to play.
Assuming every Atari cartridge works
Atari’s “most” wording requires a title-by-title check. Keep the compatibility list open while shopping for a used cartridge, especially when a listing does not show the cartridge’s exact label or revision.
Forgetting power accessories
Nintendo’s required USB arrangement and Atari’s missing USB-C adapter are easy to overlook because HDMI receives most of the attention in product descriptions. Count cables and adapters separately before deciding whether a package is complete.
Overwriting a Nintendo save
A Suspend Point can replace newer in-game progress when you resume from an older snapshot. Use the game’s native save first and reserve Suspend Points for intentional checkpoints.
Paying an inflated used-market price
Official feature pages do not establish a fair resale value. Compare current listings, verify condition and accessories, and treat “new old stock” or incomplete bundles cautiously. Atari’s regional links can change, and Nintendo’s current availability is not established by the support pages cited here.
Which console fits which player?
Choose NES Classic Edition when
- Your essential games are on Nintendo’s 30-game NES list.
- You want the simplest fixed-library experience and do not need additional downloads.
- You value four Suspend Point slots per preloaded game.
- You are prepared to obtain any required second-player accessory separately.
Choose Super NES Classic Edition when
- Your list is centered on SNES games such as Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III, F-ZERO or A Link to the Past.
- You understand that its library is different from the NES Classic Edition’s library.
- You prefer HDMI plug-and-play and built-in Suspend Points over cartridges.
Choose Atari 2600+ when
- You already own Atari 2600 or 7800 cartridges, or want to collect compatible cartridges.
- Playing physical media is more important than having a fixed Nintendo library.
- You have checked the compatibility list for every important cartridge.
- You can supply a USB-C power adapter in addition to the listed cable.
Bottom line
For a specific NES or SNES game list, buy only the Nintendo Classic Edition whose official list contains those games; both are simple HDMI systems but neither can be expanded. For an Atari cartridge collection, Atari 2600+ is the relevant path, provided each cartridge is checked for compatibility and you supply the missing USB-C power adapter.
