The right replacement appliance is the one that fits the opening and delivery route, handles your household’s real workload, and still makes financial sense after energy, water, delivery, installation, supplies, and disposal are included. Start by measuring and checking the exact installation instructions, then compare similarly sized models using EnergyGuide estimates and applicable ENERGY STAR criteria.

This order prevents the most expensive mistakes: buying a model that cannot pass through the doorway, discovering that its doors hit a wall or island, or paying a low sticker price that becomes high after services and operating costs.

Use a fit-first, full-cost decision process

Do not begin with a brand, finish, or feature list. Build a shortlist in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Physical fit: opening dimensions, ventilation space, door and drawer movement, utility connections, and the complete delivery path.
  2. Functional fit: capacity, configuration, cycles, controls, and features your household will actually use.
  3. Efficiency: EnergyGuide consumption and cost estimates, plus ENERGY STAR certification when the category and model qualify.
  4. Total installed cost: appliance price, delivery, installation or hookup, haul-away, required hoses or cords, taxes, and realistic operating costs.
  5. Purchase timing and support: warranty terms, local rebates, return policy, and whether an open-box or used option is sensible.

A model that fails any earlier step should not remain on the shortlist, no matter how attractive its price or feature set appears.

How do I measure for a new refrigerator?

Refrigerators are unusually sensitive to fit because they are deep, need airflow, and have doors that swing into nearby cabinets and walkways. Consumer Reports’ refrigerator guide, updated July 10, 2026, recommends checking both the opening and the route used to deliver the appliance.

Measure the opening at several points

Record width, height, and depth at the front, middle, and back of the opening. Walls and floors are not always square, and a single measurement can hide a tight spot. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction, including cabinets, trim, molding, and soffits. Measure between the narrowest points of the side walls, not just between the cabinet faces.

  • Note baseboards, door casing, chair rails, countertop overhangs, and any trim that reduces the usable opening.
  • Check for uneven flooring that could change the height available or require leveling feet to be extended.
  • Look for walls that bow inward and for outlets, water lines, gas pipes, or other projections behind the appliance.
  • Write down the depth to the wall and the depth to the front edge of the counter. A refrigerator may project beyond the counter even when its cabinet technically fits.

Compare these measurements with the candidate model’s installation diagram, not only the headline product dimensions. The manual may specify separate cabinet, handle, hinge, and door-open dimensions.

Allow the manufacturer’s ventilation clearance

Refrigerators release heat and require airflow. The required space above, behind, and beside the cabinet varies by model, so use the exact installation instructions. A refrigerator that can be pushed into an opening but lacks the specified airflow may run inefficiently, make excess noise, or fail to operate as intended.

Check door swing and usable access

Open every door and drawer to the angles shown in the installation documentation. Check clearance from islands, adjacent cabinets, walls, and handles. Confirm that crisper drawers, freezer baskets, and shelves can be removed for cleaning without hitting an obstruction. Reversible doors are useful only if the model permits the required hinge change and the surrounding layout leaves enough room.

Measure the delivery route before ordering

Measure exterior doors, interior doorways, hallways, turns, stairwells, elevator openings, and the final approach to the kitchen. Include door thickness and trim in the narrowest measurement. Identify low ceilings, railings, sharp corners, and steps. Ask the seller how the refrigerator will be tilted or unpacked during delivery and whether packaging dimensions differ from the installed cabinet.

Confirm who is responsible if the appliance cannot pass through the route. A delivery crew may return the unit, charge a failed-delivery fee, or require doors to be removed; policies differ by seller and location.

Do not assume counter-depth means flush

Counter-depth models often project less into a room, but the label does not guarantee a flush installation. Handles, doors, hinges, required rear clearance, and the surrounding cabinetry still determine the final projection. Compare the actual product dimensions and usable capacity with your measured space.

How do I measure for appliances other than refrigerators?

Use the same measurement discipline, but do not transfer refrigerator-specific clearances to a range, dishwasher, washer, dryer, or other appliance. Universal dimensions and clearance rules were not established for every appliance category. For the exact model, obtain the installation guide and verify:

  • Required opening width, height, and depth.
  • Ventilation and combustible-material clearances where applicable.
  • Electrical voltage, amperage, plug, circuit, or hard-wiring requirements.
  • Water supply, drain, gas, vent, or exhaust connections.
  • Location and length limits for hoses, cords, and ducts.
  • Door, lid, drawer, and service-access clearance.
  • Delivery access and any need to remove doors, railings, or packaging.

If the seller cannot provide the installation documentation, treat that as a reason to pause rather than guessing from a product listing.

How big a refrigerator should I buy?

Choose capacity from your household’s shopping and cooking habits, then verify that the exterior dimensions still fit. A larger refrigerator generally consumes more energy; ENERGY STAR states, “Generally, the larger the refrigerator, the greater the energy consumption.” The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) also warns that an oversized refrigerator increases purchase cost and can waste energy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Size for actual use, not occasional overbuying

Review what is usually in your refrigerator during a normal week. A household that shops frequently may need less storage than one that buys in bulk. Account for large containers, meal-prep boxes, frozen food, beverages, and seasonal entertaining. If the freezer is always full but the fresh-food section is mostly empty, prioritize freezer layout rather than simply increasing total capacity.

Usable capacity matters more than the headline cubic-foot number. Shelves, ice makers, water reservoirs, drawers, and thick insulation occupy space. Compare the interior arrangement, shelf adjustability, door-bin size, and freezer access of models with similar external dimensions.

Compare configurations against energy and access trade-offs

Top-freezer refrigerators tend to use the least energy among common configurations. DOE cautions that side-by-side models and through-the-door ice typically use more energy than some alternatives. Those features can still be worthwhile if their convenience solves a real household problem; treat the energy difference as part of the trade-off rather than assuming the most efficient layout is automatically best for everyone.

How do I know whether an appliance is energy-efficient?

Use labels as comparison tools, not as promises of a particular household bill. EnergyGuide estimates annual energy consumption and cost under standardized assumptions. Your utility rate, climate, installation, loading, cycle choices, and usage pattern can produce a different result. ENERGY STAR certification means the model meets that program’s applicable efficiency criteria for its product category; it does not guarantee a fixed dollar saving for every home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare EnergyGuide figures within the same category

Place similar models side by side and record estimated annual kilowatt-hours, gallons per cycle where shown, and estimated annual operating cost. Compare refrigerators with refrigerators and standard dishwashers with standard dishwashers. A compact dishwasher has different criteria from a standard machine, so do not rank them by a single threshold without considering capacity.

Understand the published refrigerator figures

ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator guidance accessed October 13, 2026 estimates that a certified refrigerator is about 9 percent more energy efficient than models meeting the federal minimum standard. The same guidance estimates about $150 in savings over a 12-year product lifetime when an old refrigerator is replaced with a certified model and the old unit is recycled. That is a program estimate, not a guarantee for every household.

FEMP’s 2023 example is different: it estimates $45 in lifetime energy-cost savings for an ENERGY STAR refrigerator compared with its reference model, using a modeled 18.1-cubic-foot automatic-defrost top-freezer refrigerator, federal electricity-price assumptions, a 16.2-year assumed product life, and December 2023 criteria. Because the reference product and assumptions differ, do not combine or substitute the $45 and $150 figures.

Understand the published dishwasher figures

FEMP’s 2023 dishwasher example estimates $94 in lifetime combined utility-cost savings for an ENERGY STAR dishwasher. The model assumes 215 cycles per year, federal electricity and water/sewer rates, and a 15.2-year assumed product life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For criteria effective July 19, 2023, ENERGY STAR lists a maximum of 240 kilowatt-hours per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle for a standard ENERGY STAR dishwasher. Compact dishwashers have separate thresholds. Check the current criteria for the product class you are considering rather than applying the standard limit to a compact model.

Published figure Scope and assumptions How to use it
About 9% more efficient ENERGY STAR refrigerator guidance accessed October 13, 2026; compared with federal minimum-standard models Screen certified refrigerators against similar non-certified models
About $150 lifetime savings ENERGY STAR estimate for replacing and recycling an old refrigerator over 12 years Use as a program estimate, not a personal savings promise
$45 lifetime energy savings FEMP 2023 modeled 18.1-cubic-foot top-freezer refrigerator; federal electricity assumptions; 16.2-year life Understand one transparent comparison; do not merge it with the $150 estimate
$94 lifetime utility savings FEMP 2023 dishwasher example; 215 cycles/year; federal electricity and water/sewer rates; 15.2-year life Compare the example’s assumptions with your own usage and rates
240 kWh/year and 3.2 gallons/cycle maximum Standard ENERGY STAR dishwasher criteria effective July 19, 2023 Check standard models against the standard category; compact criteria differ

Decide whether an efficiency premium pays back

Estimate the added purchase price, multiply the annual utility difference by your local rates and realistic usage, and consider the years you expect to keep the appliance. DOE FEMP describes this lifecycle-cost approach, but its examples use federal purchase and utility assumptions. A higher-efficiency model is financially stronger when plausible lifetime utility savings exceed the added upfront price without forcing you to buy excess capacity or unwanted features.

What does a new appliance really cost after delivery and installation?

The sticker price is only one line in the purchase. Ask for a current, local quote that shows the complete delivered and installed total.

Cost item Questions to ask
Appliance price Is the listed price current, and is it for the exact size, finish, and configuration?
Delivery Does the charge include stairs, long carries, door removal, unpacking, and placement?
Installation or hookup Does the service include leveling, water, gas, electrical, drain, or vent connections required by this model?
Required supplies Are hoses, shutoff valves, power cords, adapters, anti-tip hardware, or vent parts included?
Old-appliance haul-away Is removal included, priced separately, limited by condition, or unavailable for certain appliances?
Operating cost What do EnergyGuide energy and water estimates imply at your local rates?
Taxes and fees Are disposal, recycling, installation, or regional fees added at checkout?

Consumer Reports’ retailer guidance, updated January 19, 2023, notes that delivery, installation, hookup, and haul-away may be included, charged separately, or offered through promotions. Terms change, so verify the complete installed price with the seller before paying.

Consider floor, open-box, and used options carefully

If the replacement is not urgent, ask about floor samples, open-box inventory, or used appliances. Possible savings are not guaranteed. Inspect condition, missing accessories, remaining useful life, warranty coverage, return rights, cosmetic or functional damage, and delivery terms. A discount is not worthwhile if a missing hose, damaged door, or short return window creates a second purchase.

Check rebates and incentives before checkout

ENERGY STAR and DOE identify utility incentives as a possible way to reduce the cost of an efficient appliance. Availability, eligibility, funding, and qualifying model lists are local and can change. Search your electricity or gas utility’s current program page, confirm whether the rebate applies to the exact model and purchase date, and save the required receipt, model number, recycling proof, and installation documentation.

Do not subtract a rebate from your budget until the program confirms that your household, location, appliance category, and purchase channel qualify.

A practical shopping workflow

  1. Define the replacement job. Write down why the old appliance is being replaced, the must-have capacity, essential features, and features you can give up.
  2. Measure the space and route. Record multiple opening measurements, obstacles, utility locations, and every narrow point from delivery entrance to final position.
  3. Collect installation documents. Download the exact candidate model’s manual and installation diagram before ordering.
  4. Build a fit-qualified shortlist. Remove any model that fails opening, clearance, door-swing, utility, or route checks.
  5. Compare like with like. Match configuration and capacity class, then record EnergyGuide energy, water, and annual-cost estimates.
  6. Price the complete installation. Request delivery, hookup, haul-away, supplies, taxes, and fees in writing.
  7. Check incentives and warranty. Verify current local rebates, return terms, labor coverage, parts coverage, and who handles service.
  8. Choose using lifecycle cost. Weigh the upfront difference against realistic utility savings and the years you expect to own the appliance.
  9. Reconfirm before delivery. Recheck the model number, dimensions, route, installation requirements, and service appointment.

Common failure modes and how to prevent them

The cabinet fits, but the appliance cannot get inside

This happens when shoppers measure the kitchen opening but not the exterior doorway, hallway turn, stairwell, or packaging. Measure the full route and ask the seller about delivery clearances before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The doors open only partway

Nearby walls, islands, handles, and cabinet panels can block access even when the refrigerator body fits. Use the manufacturer’s open-door dimensions and test every drawer and shelf path.

The appliance is too deep for comfortable use

A model can meet the opening measurement yet project far into the room. Compare cabinet depth, handle depth, door-open depth, and required rear clearance; do not rely on the term counter-depth.

The installation requires parts you did not budget for

Water lines, hoses, cords, vent components, shutoff valves, anti-tip brackets, and adapters may be separate. Ask for a written list of included and excluded materials.

The promised savings do not appear on the utility bill

EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR figures use standardized assumptions. Local rates, frequent door openings, high-temperature settings, partial loads, and different cycle choices can change actual costs. Use the figures to compare models, not to promise a specific bill reduction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A rebate is rejected

Common causes include an expired funding window, an ineligible model, missing recycling proof, an incorrect purchase date, or a household that does not meet the program rules. Confirm eligibility before purchase and retain every document.

Old-appliance removal falls through

Some services require the old unit to be disconnected, empty, accessible, and in a particular condition. Confirm these requirements and have a backup disposal or recycling plan if haul-away is not included.

Make the final decision with a simple scorecard

For each surviving model, score fit, capacity, efficiency, installed price, and support separately. A model should not win on efficiency while failing the route, or win on price while lacking the capacity you use every day.

  • Fit: passes all opening, clearance, door-swing, utility, and route checks.
  • Use: stores or processes the normal household workload without relying on unused features.
  • Efficiency: compares favorably within the same category on EnergyGuide figures and meets applicable ENERGY STAR criteria if selected.
  • Cost: remains within budget after delivery, installation, supplies, haul-away, taxes, and realistic operating costs.
  • Risk: has clear warranty, return, service, rebate, and delivery terms.

The best replacement is the model that clears every non-negotiable requirement and offers a defensible ownership cost—not necessarily the largest, cheapest, or most feature-packed appliance.
