The right local-multiplayer racing game is determined first by your hardware, then by how many people will race on one screen, which controllers you have, and whether your group wants a relaxed free-for-all or cooperative team play. For a single Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the clearest documented fit for four players sharing a screen. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a broader platform option with local split-screen, while Team Sonic Racing is the specialist choice for cooperative team mechanics—provided you confirm its current availability.
Start with the kind of local play you actually need
“Local multiplayer” can describe two different setups. In same-console split-screen, everyone uses one console and views the race on one television or the console’s tabletop display. In local wireless play, each player uses a separate console connected nearby. The player count, number of game copies and controller requirements can change completely between those arrangements.
Same-console split-screen
Choose this when the group is sitting together and you want the simplest setup. The console renders several views at once, so the game must explicitly support split-screen and your hardware must support the stated number of players. A game advertising eight-player local wireless does not automatically support eight people on one screen.

Local wireless across consoles
This is useful when several people own compatible consoles and want an individual full-screen view. It normally requires a console for each player and, in some games, a separate software copy for each player. Treat “local wireless,” “local communication” and “local play” as mode labels to verify rather than interchangeable promises.

Use this decision sequence before buying
- List the hardware. Write down the console model, whether you will play on a television or tabletop display, and how many compatible controllers are available.
- Choose the setup. Decide between one-console split-screen and local wireless across multiple consoles.
- Set the target player count. Count people who will race simultaneously, not spectators or players taking turns.
- Pick the racing style. Decide whether your group wants item-based kart racing, traditional race events, party modes, or cooperation between teammates.
- Check the exact platform page. A feature listed for one version may not apply to another. Confirm the mode and player count for the edition you intend to purchase.
- Audit controllers and copies. Plan one compatible controller per player and, for local wireless, check whether every console needs its own copy.
- Verify volatile details. Retail stock, regional editions and current availability can change, especially for older releases.

When Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the practical Switch choice
Nintendo’s product page identifies Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a Nintendo Switch game released on 28 April 2017, with 48 courses. Its local split-screen mode supports up to four players on one Switch in TV or tabletop mode. That is the key specification for a household or party with one console: four people can race together without bringing additional consoles.
Four players on one Switch
Connect the Switch to a television for the largest shared view, or use tabletop mode when a television is unavailable. Select the local multiplayer option, assign a controller to each participant and choose the race rules. Nintendo states that one compatible controller is required per multiplayer player and notes that additional controllers may be needed, so count controllers before the event rather than after everyone arrives.
Eight players through local wireless
The same product page lists up to eight players through local wireless. This is not an eight-player split-screen mode: each participant uses a separate compatible console, and Nintendo says one copy of the software is required per player for Wireless Play. If your group owns only one Switch or one game copy, plan for the four-player shared-screen mode instead.

Nintendo describes Smart Steering as an option that helps new players stay on course. It can reduce early frustration in a mixed-experience group, while experienced players can leave it off. Treat it as an onboarding setting, not as a replacement for choosing an appropriate speed class or race rules.
When Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds fits better
SEGA’s official information lists local play for one to four players. It separately identifies Nintendo Switch local communication for up to eight players, while the PlayStation listing describes local split-screen in Grand Prix and Race Park. Those statements describe different platform or mode combinations, so do not advertise the game to your group as having one universal local player count.
Check the platform-specific mode
Before purchasing, open the product information for your exact console and look for the local mode name. On PlayStation, verify that the split-screen events you want—such as Grand Prix or Race Park—are included in the edition shown. On Switch, distinguish four-player local play from the separate local-communication option that can reach eight players.
Account for changing details
The official CrossWorlds page displayed update notices dated 10 October 2026 when its information was retrieved. Updates can alter menus, supported events or platform notes. Recheck the current listing immediately before buying or organizing a tournament, particularly if your plan depends on an eight-player local-communication session.

When Team Sonic Racing is the right style
SEGA product information describes four-player split-screen and a cooperative team system. Teammates can share power-ups and speed boosts, so success depends on helping the team as well as finishing your own lap quickly. This changes the social dynamic: a less experienced driver can still contribute by passing useful items or boosts to a teammate.
The available product sheet is publisher information updated 21 May 2018, not a current store-availability statement. Confirm that the game runs on your intended platform and is sold in your region before building a session around it. Do not assume that a historical four-player specification proves current support for every console generation.
Match the game to your group’s racing preferences
Choose free-for-all kart racing for mixed groups
Item-based kart racing gives every participant an individual result and usually creates frequent reversals of fortune. It works well when players have different skill levels and want short, repeatable races. A beginner-friendly assistance option, such as Smart Steering in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, can make the first races less intimidating.
Choose team racing for cooperation
Team mechanics are better when the group enjoys communication and shared objectives. In Team Sonic Racing, passing power-ups and speed boosts gives strong drivers a support role instead of rewarding only the fastest individual. Agree on team sizes and whether teammates may coach one another before starting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose event variety for a party
If participants have different attention spans, prioritize a game and platform listing that includes more than a single race format. SEGA’s CrossWorlds information names Grand Prix and Race Park for local split-screen on PlayStation. Confirm the exact event list for your platform rather than assuming every mode appears everywhere.
Budget and purchase planning
The cheapest-looking setup is not always the cheapest complete setup. A one-console split-screen session needs one game copy, but it still needs one compatible controller for every person racing. If you choose local wireless, count consoles and software copies as well as controllers. Nintendo’s specification for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one copy per player for Wireless Play, so a large group can require several purchases.
Controller accessories are a conditional expense rather than a universal recommendation. First inventory the controllers you already own, then check that each is compatible with the console and accepted by the game. If you must buy or borrow extras, do so before race night and test them. No fixed price should be assumed: retailer prices, bundles, regional editions and stock change over time.

Older games require an additional availability check. The four-player information for Team Sonic Racing comes from a product sheet updated in 2018, so compare current store listings and supported hardware before spending money. For CrossWorlds, use the current platform page because update notices can change the practical details of a local session.
Plan the room as carefully as the game
Four split-screen panes are easier to follow on a television than on a small tabletop display. If tabletop mode is your only option, place the Switch where every participant has a clear, stable view and keep charging cables away from the play area. Seat players so controllers do not cross one another, and leave enough space for people to reconnect a device without blocking the screen.
For a multi-console wireless session, label each console and game copy before starting. Put all systems on charge, install required updates, and decide who will create the local room. Keep the consoles close enough for the listed local-communication range, but do not confuse a local room with an internet lobby. If a session depends on a particular platform mode, open that mode once during setup rather than assuming the menu will match another console.
Use a low-pressure opening race
- Pair or connect every controller and confirm battery levels.
- Join the intended number of players in the exact local mode.
- Run one short race with default settings.
- Ask each player whether the screen, controls and seating are comfortable.
- Turn on available assistance for newcomers, then begin the planned event.
This test catches the most common failures—an unpaired controller, an unavailable mode, a missing software copy or an uncomfortable viewing angle—before the main competition begins.
Keep local and online requirements separate
Local multiplayer should not be described as online multiplayer. Nintendo notes that two local players can join online races together in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but that adds internet, account and paid-membership conditions that depend on the player’s region. Those requirements apply to the online portion, not to the basic four-player split-screen session on one Switch.
If your group plans to mix couch players with remote players, check the current account and membership terms before inviting everyone. If the plan is entirely local, concentrate on the console, display, controller and software-copy requirements instead. Keeping those two checklists separate prevents people from buying a subscription they do not need—or arriving without the hardware they do.
How to read a store listing
Look for the exact phrases used by the platform holder: “split-screen multiplayer,” “local multiplayer,” “local play” or “local communication.” Then read the player count beside the phrase, not a headline elsewhere on the page. A listing can contain several numbers for different modes. Record the platform, number of simultaneous players, required controllers and whether each console needs its own copy.

Do not infer features from a franchise name. CrossWorlds has separate Switch and PlayStation descriptions, and Team Sonic Racing has an older product specification. A current digital listing, physical box and publisher page may also show different regional wording. When they disagree, confirm the edition you will actually buy and check the date of the listing.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing wireless and split-screen counts: Eight local-wireless players may still mean only four on one screen. Read the mode label next to the number.
- Buying one copy for a multi-console session: Nintendo states that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Wireless Play requires one copy per player. Budget for that requirement before inviting a large group.
- Assuming all platforms share the same features: CrossWorlds lists different local details for Switch and PlayStation. Verify the exact edition.
- Arriving short on controllers: One controller per player is the baseline. Borrow or purchase compatible units in advance, without assuming a specific accessory model will work.
- Relying on an old product listing: Team Sonic Racing’s cited specification is from 2018. Treat availability and supported hardware as questions to confirm today.
- Ignoring skill differences: Use available assistance settings for newcomers, run a practice race and avoid making the first event a long championship.
- Forgetting update or account requirements: If you use online features in addition to local play, check the current internet, account and paid-membership conditions for your region. Local play itself should not be described as online multiplayer.
A setup checklist for race night
- Console model and display method confirmed.
- Exact local mode selected: split-screen or local wireless.
- Player count confirmed for that mode and platform.
- One compatible controller assigned to each player.
- Software copies counted for every console in a wireless session.
- Current platform support and availability checked, especially for older releases.
- Race format chosen: free-for-all, Grand Prix, party event or cooperative teams.
- Practice race completed with the full controller count.
Which option should you pick?
Pick Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when you have one Nintendo Switch and up to four people need to race on one screen, or when your group can supply multiple Switch consoles and copies for local wireless play. Its documented player limits and Smart Steering option make the setup straightforward for mixed-experience groups.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Confirm whether you need one-to-four local play, PlayStation split-screen events, or Switch local communication for up to eight, because those are separate claims.
Pick Team Sonic Racing when sharing power-ups, boosting teammates and pursuing a team result is more appealing than an individual leaderboard. Verify current availability and platform support first because the cited four-player information comes from a 2018 product sheet.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on one Switch?
Up to four players can use split-screen on one Nintendo Switch in TV or tabletop mode. Each player needs one compatible controller. The separate eight-player figure applies to local wireless across multiple consoles, not to eight people sharing one screen.
Does Mario Kart 8 Deluxe local wireless require multiple game copies?
Yes. Nintendo states that Wireless Play requires one copy of the software per player, along with a compatible console for each participant. If you have one Switch or one copy, use the four-player shared-screen mode instead.

What is the difference between split-screen and local wireless?
Split-screen puts everyone on one console and display, with each player receiving part of the screen. Local wireless links nearby consoles so each player has an individual view. They can have different player limits, controller needs and software-copy requirements.

Is Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds four-player on every platform?
SEGA lists local play for one to four players, but platform details differ. The Switch listing separately mentions local communication for up to eight, while PlayStation lists local split-screen in Grand Prix and Race Park. Confirm the exact edition and mode.
Does Team Sonic Racing still support four-player split-screen?
SEGA product information updated 21 May 2018 describes four-player split-screen and cooperative team mechanics. Because that specification is old, verify current platform support, store availability and regional compatibility before buying.
How many controllers do I need for a local racing session?
Plan one compatible controller per simultaneous player. Nintendo explicitly states this requirement for multiplayer in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Pair every controller and test button response before guests arrive; do not assume a controller that opens menus is comfortable for racing.
Do I need an online subscription for couch multiplayer?
Basic same-console local play does not become online multiplayer simply because the game also offers online features. If you add online races, check the current internet, account and paid-membership requirements for your region. Requirements can differ from the local setup.
What should I check before buying an older racing game?
Confirm the exact platform, current store listing, local player count, controller requirement and whether the advertised mode is still supported. Retail stock, prices, regional editions and hardware compatibility can change, especially when the feature information comes from an older product sheet.
The Bottom Line
Choose by setup first: one Switch and four people points to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe; platform-specific local modes make Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds worth checking; cooperative item sharing favors Team Sonic Racing. Confirm controllers, copies, platform details and current availability before you pay or invite the group.
