The right PS5 rhythm game is the one whose songs you actually want to replay and whose physical controls feel natural. Compare four things before buying: the exact music included, the action you perform on every beat, the cost of packs or subscriptions, and whether you need VR hardware.
For Japanese pop, anime, VOCALOID and game music with drum-pattern play, start with Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival. For a library devoted to Final Fantasy, choose Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. If you want immersive motion control, compare Beat Saber, Synth Riders and Pistol Whip, while checking the current support status of the PlayStation version.
Start with the music, not the song-count headline
A large number of tracks does not guarantee a good fit. A player who loves Final Fantasy music may prefer 385 focused tracks over hundreds of unrelated licensed songs. Someone who mainly listens to Japanese anime themes may value a smaller base catalog plus a pass or packs that contain those specific songs.

The four questions that prevent most buying mistakes
- Are my favorite songs available? Search the current track list rather than relying on a total-song figure.
- What do I physically do? You may strike drum patterns, follow stage-style button prompts, or move VR controllers through the play space.
- What is the real music budget? Add the base game to only the packs or subscription access you actually need.
- What equipment and social features do I want? Decide between a standard controller, a compatible drum peripheral, or a VR headset and controllers. Check whether local and online modes are available on the version you are buying.
PS5 rhythm games compared by library and play style
| Game | Music identity and documented catalog | Core interaction | Hardware and social notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival | Japanese pop, anime, VOCALOID, game music and other licensed categories. The base game is described as having 76 songs; the paid Taiko Music Pass provides access to more than 700 additional songs. | Drum-pattern play in Taiko Mode, with four difficulty modes. It also has Story mode and other activities. | Playable on PS5 with a standard controller; compatible with the Taiko no Tatsujin Drum Controller for PS5, PS4 and Windows PC. Taiko Land supports up to four players, and Dondoko Town provides online play. |
| Theatrhythm Final Bar Line | Final Fantasy music rather than a broad cross-genre licensing catalog. Square Enix describes 385 tracks in the standard game across the Final Fantasy series. | Stage-based rhythm inputs combined with party and character progression. It has three game modes. | Local and online multiplayer. The standard controller is the expected starting point; verify the edition and downloadable track list for your region. |
| Beat Saber | VR music-playlist experience. On PlayStation, songs and packs released by June 18, 2025 remain purchasable. The last PlayStation content release was Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra” on June 5, 2025. | Slash incoming blocks in time with the music using VR motion controllers. | Requires a compatible PlayStation VR setup. PlayStation multiplayer ended February 26, 2026, although PlayStation customer support continues. |
| Synth Riders | Electronic and licensed music with optional DLC songs and stages, including packs featuring Gorillaz, Bruno Mars and The Offspring. The guide does not establish one comparable total-song figure. | Motion-led VR rhythm play with modifiers. | Local Party mode and 10-player online multiplayer are described in PlayStation’s guide. Requires compatible VR hardware. |
| Pistol Whip | Included by PlayStation’s guide among its rhythm and music games; the reviewed guide does not state a comparable song count. | VR music/action play. Check the current product listing for the exact modes and music available in your territory. | Requires compatible VR hardware. Use it as a motion-focused alternative rather than ranking it by catalog size. |
The figures above come from publisher or platform descriptions, not an independent audit of every currently available track. A pass catalog can also include songs that are not part of the base purchase, so treat the base and expanded totals as separate buying decisions.
Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival: the strongest non-VR fit for Japanese music
Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival is the clearest choice when your ideal rhythm game resembles a Japanese arcade drum cabinet. You follow notes on a lane and perform the corresponding drum hits, either with a normal PS5 controller or a compatible Taiko no Tatsujin Drum Controller. The PlayStation listing describes four Taiko Mode difficulty levels, so beginners can start with simpler patterns while experienced players work upward.
What is in the music library?
Bandai Namco describes 76 songs in the base game. Its paid Taiko Music Pass adds access to more than 700 songs. Those numbers communicate the scale of the two offerings, but they do not tell you whether your favorite opening theme, VOCALOID track or game song is included. Search the current catalog before paying for the pass.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe US PlayStation Store listing has described separately sold packs spanning anime, pop, classical, game-music and licensed-theme categories. Pack availability, names and prices are regional and can change. A player interested in one franchise may spend less by buying a single pack, while someone who wants to explore broadly may prefer the Music Pass. Compare the exact tracks you want rather than assuming that either option contains the complete catalog.
Modes and multiplayer
- Taiko Mode: the central drum-chart experience with four difficulty modes.
- Story mode: a progression-based way to play through the game’s adventure content.
- Taiko Land: multiplayer activities for up to four players on the same system.
- Dondoko Town: an online mode described by the publisher.
This combination makes Taiko especially suitable for a household that wants local party play as well as solo practice. It is also the only option in this comparison with a specifically named compatible drum controller. The official compatibility statement covers PS5, PS4 and Windows PC; it does not confirm a particular retailer’s stock, bundle, model number or current price.

Who should choose it?
- Choose it if Japanese pop, anime, VOCALOID or game music is central to your listening.
- Choose it if you want rhythmic drumming rather than VR motion.
- Choose it if local multiplayer for up to four people matters.
- Check first if you are willing to buy a drum controller, because the standard controller and dedicated accessory produce different physical experiences.
- Check the track list first if the appeal depends on a handful of favorite licensed songs; they may require a pack or the Music Pass.
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line: the focused choice for Final Fantasy fans
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is built around one musical universe: Final Fantasy. Square Enix describes three game modes, more than 100 Final Fantasy characters and 385 tracks in the standard game across the series. That focus is its advantage. You are not paying for a broad collection of unrelated pop or anime licenses when the music you want is the series’ orchestral themes, battle tracks and character motifs.
How its gameplay differs from Taiko
Theatrhythm turns songs into stage-based rhythm sequences. You follow prompts and keep a party of Final Fantasy characters performing effectively, rather than striking a virtual drum. The party structure gives the game a light role-playing dimension: your choice is not only which song to play, but also which characters and progression systems accompany it.
Local and online multiplayer are part of the product description. That makes it a practical option for Final Fantasy fans who want to play together without buying VR hardware. Before purchase, verify which edition you are viewing and which downloadable tracks are sold separately in your territory; the 385-track figure refers to the standard game described on Square Enix’s product page.
Who should choose it?
- Choose it when Final Fantasy music matters more than genre breadth.
- Choose it when you prefer stage prompts and party mechanics to drum patterns.
- Choose it when local or online multiplayer is useful but VR is not.
- Look elsewhere if your must-have songs are mainly anime, current pop or non-Final Fantasy game music.
Beat Saber: an established VR option with a finished PlayStation content pipeline
Beat Saber is the right interaction model for players who want to slash incoming blocks in time with music. It is not a standard-controller rhythm game: you need a compatible PlayStation VR setup and motion controllers, and you should have enough clear play space to move safely.
What changed on PlayStation?
The official Beat Saber FAQ says that songs and music packs released on or before June 18, 2025 remain available to purchase on PlayStation. It identifies Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra,” released June 5, 2025, as the last PlayStation content release. New PlayStation music should therefore not be treated as an ongoing expectation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
PlayStation multiplayer was discontinued on February 26, 2026. The game remains available, and the support FAQ says PlayStation customer support continues, but a buyer choosing Beat Saber in 2026 is choosing its existing PlayStation catalog rather than an actively expanding one. If regularly arriving songs or online multiplayer are essential, this support status should weigh heavily in your decision.
Who should choose it?
- Choose it for immersive motion and the satisfaction of physically slicing to the beat.
- Choose it if you already own the required PlayStation VR equipment.
- Choose it if the existing song and pack catalog suits you and you do not require new PlayStation releases.
- Do not choose it solely because you expect future PlayStation multiplayer or a continuing stream of PlayStation music packs.
Synth Riders and Pistol Whip: compare the VR experience before the catalog
Synth Riders
PlayStation’s rhythm-game guide describes Synth Riders as a VR game with play modifiers, a local Party mode and 10-player online multiplayer. Optional DLC adds songs and stages from acts including Gorillaz, Bruno Mars and The Offspring. It is a strong comparison point for players who want motion-led play and social features, especially when electronic music or artist-specific packs appeal to them.
The available guide does not provide a single total-song figure comparable with Taiko’s 76 or Theatrhythm’s 385. Evaluate it by the artists and packs you actually want, then check the current store listing for price and compatibility.
Pistol Whip
PlayStation includes Pistol Whip among its rhythm and music games. The reviewed product information does not establish a comparable song count, so catalog size is not a sound basis for ranking it against the other games. Consider it when you want a VR music/action experience, and confirm the current description, modes, music and hardware requirements before buying.

- Write down the base-game catalog that is available without additional purchases.
- Mark each favorite song as base-game, individual pack, or subscription/pass content.
- Add the price of only the packs needed for those songs.
- If considering a subscription, check its access terms, renewal conditions and whether the songs remain playable only while the subscription is active.
- Add any hardware: a Taiko drum controller for Taiko, or a compatible VR headset and controllers for the VR games.
- Recheck the total in your regional PlayStation Store, because prices and DLC availability are not universal.
For Taiko, compare the cost of one or two desired packs with the paid Music Pass. For Theatrhythm, verify whether your preferred Final Fantasy entries are in the standard edition or an add-on. For Beat Saber and Synth Riders, price the specific music packs you will actually play instead of assuming every available pack is necessary.
Choose hardware before you choose a game
Standard PS5 controller
A standard controller keeps the entry decision simple and avoids peripheral or headset costs. It suits Theatrhythm and allows Taiko to be played without the dedicated drum. It is also the practical fallback if several people need to play but only one specialized accessory is available.
Taiko drum controller
The official PlayStation page confirms compatibility with a Taiko no Tatsujin Drum Controller for PS5, PS4 and Windows PC. A drum changes the timing and physical feedback substantially, but it is an optional purchase rather than a stated requirement. Confirm the exact product, connection method, regional availability and current price before ordering.
VR headset and motion controllers
Beat Saber, Synth Riders and Pistol Whip are VR choices. Confirm that your headset and controllers are supported by the specific PS5 listing; do not assume that a headset used on another platform will work. Also plan for play-space clearance, charging and the comfort of repeated arm movement. If you do not already own compatible VR equipment, include that cost in the comparison rather than treating a VR game as equivalent to a controller-based purchase.
Use this decision process before you buy
- Pick your music identity. Select Japanese/anime/game music, Final Fantasy, a general VR playlist, or a specific artist pack.
- Choose the physical action. Select drum hits, stage prompts, or VR motion. Watch a current gameplay clip if you are unsure which action sounds enjoyable for repeated sessions.
- Check the exact tracks. Search the current regional catalog for your top five songs. A game should not win on a headline count if it misses those tracks.
- Separate included and paid content. Record whether each song is in the base game, a pack or a pass.
- Confirm equipment. Decide whether the standard controller is enough, whether Taiko’s drum is worth buying, or whether you need a compatible VR setup.
- Check social features and support. Confirm local-player limits, online play and whether new content is still arriving on PlayStation.
- Buy the smallest commitment that tests the fit. Start with the base game or one relevant pack when possible; expand only after the songs and controls prove suitable.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by total songs alone
Song counts combine different things: base content, subscription access and separately sold packs. A smaller, focused catalog can be more valuable than a larger one that does not contain your preferred music.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Assuming every rhythm game uses the same skills
Drumming, stage prompts and VR slashing create different fatigue, learning curves and replay patterns. Decide whether you want finger timing, arm movement or a party-management layer before comparing catalogs.
Forgetting regional catalog differences
The US PlayStation listing and publisher pages do not guarantee identical availability or pricing elsewhere. Check your own store account’s territory and edition.
Buying hardware before confirming compatibility
Taiko’s official compatibility statement names the supported platforms, but a retailer’s listing may show a different bundle or stock status. VR support also depends on the exact headset and controllers. Verify the current product page first.

Expecting Beat Saber to keep receiving PlayStation content
The last PlayStation content release was June 5, 2025, and multiplayer ended February 26, 2026. Treat Beat Saber as an existing-catalog purchase on PlayStation, not as a platform with continuing new releases.
Quick recommendations by player
| If you want… | Start by considering… | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Japanese pop, anime, VOCALOID or game music with drum play | Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival | Your favorite tracks, Music Pass or pack requirements, and whether to add the drum controller. |
| A large, clearly defined Final Fantasy music collection | Theatrhythm Final Bar Line | Edition and downloadable track list for your territory. |
| VR block-slashing and an established PlayStation catalog | Beat Saber | Compatible VR hardware and the fact that PlayStation content and multiplayer have ended. |
| VR motion play with local Party mode and large online sessions | Synth Riders | DLC artist packs, current price and headset compatibility. |
| A VR music/action alternative without judging by song count | Pistol Whip | Current store description, modes, music and hardware requirements. |
Bottom line
There is no universally best PS5 rhythm-game library. Choose Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival when its Japanese-focused catalog and drum play match your taste; choose Theatrhythm Final Bar Line for Final Fantasy’s concentrated 385-track identity; and choose a VR title only after confirming both the physical interaction and the platform’s current support status. The winning purchase is the one that contains your songs at a total cost you accept and asks you to play in a way you will enjoy for dozens of sessions.
