Start with the Proton version Steam selected, normally the current stable build supplied by the Steam Client. If the game still will not launch, check its current compatibility notes and Proton changelog for a fix, then test one relevant alternative at a time. Experimental and Hotfix can solve specific problems; Bleeding Edge is an untested diagnostic last resort.
There is no universally best Proton release. The right choice depends on the game, your Linux distribution, GPU driver, Steam library location, and the exact failure. If changing versions makes no difference, investigate permissions, drivers, runtime components, and collect a Proton log instead of cycling randomly through releases.
What Proton does, and why the version matters
Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for running Windows games through Steam on Linux. It combines Wine with graphics, audio, input, and other translation components so a Windows build can run without a native Linux port. Each Proton release contains a particular set of fixes and regressions. A newer release may add support for a game, while an older one may avoid a change that broke it.
Valve’s project guidance says most users should use the Proton version provided by the Steam Client. That default receives the broadest validation for ordinary use and avoids making you maintain a development build. Treat another branch as a targeted experiment based on evidence about your game, not as an automatic upgrade.

Proton is selected per game, so a working setting for one title does not establish the right setting for another. A change that fixes a launcher in one game can have no effect on a different title, and a graphics regression can affect only certain GPUs or drivers. Keep a record of the game, Proton tool, date, and result so you can undo an override cleanly.
Choose the branch by its purpose
Steam exposes several Proton branches. They are not simply a quality ranking from old to new; they have different release and testing goals.

Why “newest” is not a selection rule
Version numbers do not tell you whether a particular game will launch. A fix may be present in Experimental but absent from Stable, or a recent change may expose a problem in your GPU driver. Choose a branch because it contains a documented fix or gives you a useful comparison, then change back if it does not help.

Before changing Proton, identify the failure
A game that closes immediately, displays a missing-library message, hangs at a black screen, or fails before creating a window may have different causes. Write down the exact symptom and any text Steam or the game shows. Also record:
- The game’s name and whether you installed it through Steam.
- Your Linux distribution and release.
- Your GPU model and installed graphics-driver version.
- The Steam library path, including whether it is on an NTFS partition.
- The Proton tool Steam currently reports for that game.
- Whether the failure began after a game, driver, Steam, or Proton update.
Note whether other Steam games launch. If only one title fails, a game-specific compatibility issue is more plausible. If several unrelated titles stopped at the same time, prioritize the library, driver, Steam installation, or runtime. This information prevents a version change from hiding a system problem and makes a later compatibility report actionable.
Step-by-step: test a Proton version safely
- Confirm Steam’s current tool. Open Steam, select the game in your Library, open its Properties, and choose the Compatibility section. Note the selected tool. If you have not forced a tool, begin with the version Steam provides rather than installing a development build.
- Check current game-specific information. Review the game’s recent Proton compatibility reports and the Proton changelog for a matching issue. Look for the exact symptom, launcher, anti-cheat component, video codec, or graphics feature involved. A report that names your game and a fix is stronger evidence than a recommendation to “try the latest.”
- Separate a fix from a workaround. A changelog entry may identify a regression, a newly supported component, or a temporary workaround. Check whether it names a Proton branch, a runtime, or a launch option. Do not assume that an entry mentioning a similar game applies to yours.
- Force one alternative. In the game’s Properties > Compatibility screen, enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and select the branch indicated by the fix. Test only one alternative before changing anything else. Keep a note of the branch, date, and result.
- Use a controlled launch test. Start the game from Steam after each change and reproduce the same failure. Allow the first launch enough time for its prefix and shader or launcher setup to complete, but compare the same point in the startup process each time. Do not combine a Proton switch with a driver update, prefix deletion, filesystem move, or multiple launch options; otherwise you cannot tell which change mattered.
- Return to the baseline when appropriate. If the alternative does not improve the result, switch back to the Steam-provided stable version before investigating another cause. If it does work, keep the working selection and watch later changelogs for a fix that makes the override unnecessary.
Changing the selected tool does not repair unrelated files or permissions. A clean comparison means the game files, launch arguments, account, and hardware remain unchanged while only the Proton selection differs. If you need to test a second branch, record the first result before doing so.
When each branch is a sensible experiment
Stable: the reference point
Stable is the comparison point for every other test. Valve releases a numbered stable flavor after extensive QA and a public release-candidate phase. Start here unless a current game report explicitly directs you elsewhere. If Stable launches the game, there is no benefit in moving to a less-tested branch simply because its number is higher.

Experimental: a documented newer fix
Experimental is appropriate when its changelog names your game or the component implicated by your error. For example, a changelog entry that addresses a game’s launcher or a rendering regression gives you a reason to test it. Valve says games that work only with Experimental, as listed in its changelog, are tested for regressions before a fix is promoted. That does not guarantee success on every distribution or driver, so retain the exact result of your test.
Experimental can also be useful when a recently released game has not yet received the fix in a numbered release. Treat that as a temporary per-game override. If a later Experimental update removes the improvement, test the last known working tool and report the regression rather than assuming every newer build is better.
Hotfix: a narrow, short-lived correction
Hotfix is not a permanently newer Stable. Valve describes it as usually hosting an outdated build, with occasional targeted fixes for new or important games until the change can move into another flavor. Select it when the Hotfix notice specifically mentions your game. If no such notice exists, Stable or a relevant Experimental build is a more defensible test.

Because Hotfix builds are short-lived, check whether the same correction has moved to a later Stable or Experimental release. Keeping an obsolete branch indefinitely can make later troubleshooting harder when the game, Steam Client, or driver changes.
Bleeding Edge: diagnostic use only
Bleeding Edge is an automated and untested release from Experimental’s beta branch. It can show whether a development change has addressed a newly reported problem, but it is not a normal everyday setting. Valve warns that it can damage a game prefix or saves. Back up important saves through the game’s supported method before trying it, and do not use a failed Bleeding Edge test as proof that your hardware is unsupported.
Use it only when you can reproduce the problem, understand how to restore the game’s supported data, and are prepared to stop after a single informative test. If it launches, capture the exact build and log, then look for the change to reach a tested branch.
Read the Proton log before assuming the version is wrong
If a relevant branch does not change the failure, enable Proton’s diagnostic logging. In the game’s Steam Properties, open General, find Launch Options, and enter:

What a log can and cannot establish
- It can show which Proton executable and translation layers started, and where initialization stopped.
- It can provide error text to match against current compatibility reports.
- It cannot by itself prove that changing Proton will fix the issue.
- Repeated warnings that occur after the actual failure are often secondary; focus on the earliest fatal error and the surrounding context.
When sharing a log, include the exact game and system details and quote only the relevant portion when possible. Avoid posting personal paths or unrelated account information. A useful report states which branches were tested and whether the failure affects one title or several.
System causes that a Proton switch will not fix
Library ownership and permissions
Valve’s FAQ notes that games can fail to launch when a Steam library is on an NTFS partition that is not owned by the user. The FAQ is old, so treat this as a possible cause rather than a universal rule for every current Linux setup. Verify that your account can read, write, and execute the library and the game’s compatibility data. Correct the mount and ownership configuration using the guidance for your distribution, then retest without changing Proton again.
Graphics drivers
Some newer games require cutting-edge graphics drivers. A driver that is too old, incomplete, or mismatched with the running kernel can fail during Vulkan or DirectX translation regardless of Proton branch. Valve’s requirements material includes distribution-specific examples that are dated; do not interpret those examples as current universal minimums. Check your distribution’s current driver packages and the GPU vendor’s supported version for your hardware before replacing a working driver.

If several games fail after a driver change, that pattern is stronger evidence for a driver or Vulkan setup problem than for a title-specific Proton regression.
Steam Linux Runtime generation
Proton releases use different Steam Linux Runtime generations. Valve’s runtime reporting guide associates the following Proton ranges with runtime generations:

A runtime mismatch or damaged runtime installation can make several games fail at once. If multiple unrelated titles stopped launching after a Steam or system change, investigate the runtime and Steam installation rather than selecting a different Proton build for each title. These mappings describe the runtime generation associated with a Proton range; they are not a promise that every game in that range behaves identically.
Game files, launchers, and services
A corrupted download, a failed first-run launcher, an online service, or an anti-cheat requirement can stop a game before Proton’s game code runs. Use Steam’s file-verification function where appropriate and check the game’s current compatibility notes for launcher or service requirements. Do not delete the game prefix merely because a version switch failed; do that only when a case-specific report or log identifies damaged compatibility data and you have protected saves and configuration.
How to interpret the result of your tests
Only Experimental launches
Keep Experimental selected temporarily and record the changelog entry or report that explains why it works. Recheck later releases because the fix may move to Stable. If the game breaks again after an Experimental update, test the last known working tool and report the regression with your system details.

Only Hotfix launches
This usually indicates a narrowly targeted correction. Keep the Hotfix only while it is maintained and the game requires it; move to the later branch containing the same fix when Valve publishes one. Avoid treating Hotfix as a general performance upgrade.
Bleeding Edge launches, but nothing else does
That result suggests a development change may be relevant, but it also leaves you on an untested build. Capture the log and exact version, then check whether the change reaches Experimental or Stable. If the prefix or saves become unusable, stop testing and restore the game’s supported save data and compatibility files before continuing.
No branch launches
Stop cycling through versions. Compare the Proton log with current reports, verify library permissions, check the graphics driver, and inspect the Steam Linux Runtime generation. A failure shared by every branch is more likely to be outside the Proton version itself.

When you ask for help or file a bug, include the game, distribution and release, GPU and driver, Steam library filesystem, Proton versions tested, exact launch symptom, and the relevant portion of the Proton log. State what changed between tests and whether the failure affects one game or several. This lets others distinguish a game-specific regression from a permissions, driver, or runtime problem.

Can changing Proton delete my saves?
