For a small room, start with the distance from the projector lens to the screen and the image width you want—not the diagonal alone. Of the four models with manufacturer-documented specifications in this guide, the BenQ TH690ST and ViewSonic X2 have the shortest listed throw ratios; the XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro prioritizes portability and smart features, while Epson’s EF22 family offers a compact laser option. This is a four-model shortlist, not a verified top-five ranking, and the figures below are manufacturer specifications rather than independent test results.
How to tell whether a projector fits your room
Measure from the projector lens to the intended image plane, then choose a target image width or screen size. Throw ratio is the lens-to-screen distance divided by image width. A smaller throw ratio produces a wider image from the same distance. XGIMI Support explains the relationship in its MoGo 3 Pro projection-size and throw-ratio guide.
Use the manufacturer’s throw chart or calculator to check the actual placement range before buying. A listed ratio is a useful comparison, but it does not replace checking that the image fits your wall or screen at your available lens-to-screen distance. Also account for zoom and the intended mounting position. Keystone correction or automatic alignment may help with imperfect placement, but check the geometry first rather than relying on digital correction to make an unsuitable position work.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat short throw changes
A short-throw model can make a large image with less space between projector and screen. That can keep the projector closer to the wall and reduce the chance that people cross the beam. It does not mean the projector can sit anywhere: the image size still depends on the lens-to-screen distance and the model’s throw range.

Four projectors to consider for limited space
The models below address different priorities. Brightness figures use different measurement standards and should not be read as a direct ranking: BenQ specifies ANSI lumens, XGIMI specifies ISO lumens, ViewSonic specifies LED lumens, and Epson specifies white and colour light output under stated conditions.

|---|---|---|---|
| BenQ TH690ST | 0.69–0.83 throw ratio; 1.2× zoom | 2,300 ANSI lumens; native 1080p | Manufacturer-listed gaming latency: 16.7 ms at 1080p/60 Hz and 8.3 ms at 1080p/120 Hz |
| ViewSonic X2 | 0.69–0.83 throw ratio; 100 inches at 1.53 m | 3,100 LED lumens; native 1080p | Smart LED short-throw home projector |
| XGIMI MoGo 3 Pro | 1.2:1 throw ratio; supported image range 40–200 inches; 60–120 inches recommended for best viewing | 450 ISO lumens; native 1080p | Google TV; 1.1 kg; optional PowerBase stand and carrying case; 65W USB-C PD power-bank support for portable use |
| Epson EF22 family / EF-22B | 30–150-inch image support; EF-22B page lists a 1.0 throw ratio | 1,000 lumens white output and 1,000 lumens colour output under the guide’s stated conditions | Compact smart laser projector; EF-22B product pages describe an adjustable stand |
Which model matches your priorities?
BenQ TH690ST: short-throw gaming
Consider the TH690ST if gaming latency matters alongside placement flexibility. BenQ lists a 0.69–0.83 throw ratio, 1.2× zoom, native 1080p resolution and 2,300 ANSI lumens. Its listed input lag is 16.7 ms at 1080p/60 Hz and 8.3 ms at 1080p/120 Hz; those are manufacturer specifications for the stated modes, not independent measurements. BenQ’s product overview says the projector can produce a 100-inch image at five feet. Check the placement chart for your own target size and installation.

Epson EF22 family and EF-22B: compact laser option
Epson’s EF21/EF22 user guide lists 1,000 lumens of white output and 1,000 lumens of colour output, with image sizes from 30 to 150 inches. Epson Australia’s EF-22B product page lists a 1.0 throw ratio and describes an adjustable stand. These sources cover different regions and product naming. Confirm the exact local suffix, software bundle, warranty and port configuration before choosing a retail unit.
How to choose for your room and use
For movies in a small room
Begin with the throw calculation and the screen size you can actually accommodate. Then consider how much ambient light the room has and the model’s brightness specification, keeping its measurement standard attached to the figure. The portable MoGo 3 Pro has a lower listed lumen figure than the other models, but its ISO figure cannot be compared directly with their ANSI, LED or Epson white/colour-output figures.

For gaming
Check the input-lag specification at the resolution and refresh rate you expect to use. The TH690ST has manufacturer-listed figures for 1080p at 60 Hz and 120 Hz; do not assume either figure applies to another resolution, refresh mode or projector. Also confirm that your source device and connection can use the desired refresh mode.

Setup checks before you buy
- Measure the lens-to-screen distance. Measure to the surface where the image will appear, not to the back of the projector.
- Choose the target image size. Decide on screen width or diagonal and ensure the image can fit the available wall or screen.
- Check the manufacturer’s throw chart. Confirm the model can produce that size at your measured distance; include any zoom range in the calculation.
- Confirm the physical installation. Check whether the projector can sit or mount at the intended position and whether the beam path will be obstructed.
- Verify the exact product configuration. For regional variants and optional accessories, check the suffix, ports, software, warranty, power requirements and mounting interface for the unit sold where you live.
Why this guide lists four, not five
The manufacturer specifications available for this comparison support four models, not a defensible fifth recommendation or a fully verified top-five ranking. Adding another projector without checking its small-room placement dimensions and regional specifications would make the list look more complete without making it more useful. Prices, stock and retailer terms are also not established here, and no independent comparative test supports claims about image quality, fan noise, reliability or overall value.
