There is no single best sound mixer for every professional production. For a compact live, recording, or streaming setup, Allen & Heath SQ is a strong fit; Yamaha DM7 spans live sound, broadcast, streaming, music production, and recording; and Allen & Heath dLive is built for larger touring, broadcast, and installed systems. Choose by the show’s channel and bus requirements, signal routing, recording workflow, redundancy needs, and local support—not by a universal ranking.
Start with the production, not the product label
“Sound mixer” can mean a live console, a studio desk, or a small podcast mixer. This comparison focuses on professional digital consoles for live production and related recording, streaming, broadcast, and hybrid work. A studio-only buyer may need a different shortlist.
Write down the production’s actual requirements before comparing consoles:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Environment: touring or festivals, a permanent venue, broadcast, recording, streaming, or a hybrid event.
- Show-file capacity: input channels, mix buses, matrices, and the number of monitor mixes the production needs, including likely growth.
- Signal path: required analog inputs and outputs, network audio formats such as Dante, stage I/O, expansion cards, and compatibility with existing equipment.
- Computer workflow: the number of channels needed for multitrack recording, playback, streaming, or virtual soundcheck.
- Operational needs: operator familiarity, redundancy, service arrangements, and the local rental or dealer ecosystem.
These criteria matter more than a broad “professional” label. The manufacturer specifications below establish stated capabilities and intended uses; they are not independent sound-quality, reliability, or value tests.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Allen & Heath dLive product information | Larger, more complex productions or installations needing substantial channel and bus capacity and system expansion. |
These figures are manufacturer specifications and descriptions, not independently verified measurements or a cross-brand ranking. The evidence does not establish that one console sounds better, is more reliable, or offers better value than another.
Match the console to the work
For a compact live, recording, or streaming rig
Consider SQ when the production benefits from a compact professional console and a multichannel USB connection for computer-based recording, playback, or streaming. The documented 32×32 interface is relevant when the workflow requires multiple channels in both directions. Confirm the requirements of the specific SQ model and its firmware before building the show system.

For a shared live, broadcast, and recording system
Consider DM7 when one console must cover several production contexts and Dante is part of the planned audio network. Its documented DM7 specification combines large channel and bus counts with analog I/O and an 18-in/18-out USB audio interface. Those figures apply to the DM7; do not transfer them to DM7 Compact, whose cited specification lists 72 mono inputs and 16 analog inputs.

For large touring or installed systems
Consider dLive when the production needs the stated 128 input channels, 64 mix outputs, and configurable 64-bus architecture, or when its touring, broadcast, and installation fit aligns with the system. The cited redundancy description applies to dLive S Class; verify the configuration and connections required for the particular system.

Check the whole signal and recording path
A console’s headline channel count does not establish that it will connect to every part of an existing rig. Before purchase or rental, map each stage of the signal path and confirm the exact interfaces and channel counts required.
- Count sources and outputs: list input channels, analog inputs and outputs, mix buses, matrices, and monitor mixes for the expected show file.
- Specify network audio: identify whether Dante or another format is required, and verify the console, stage I/O, cards, and network design support the intended connection. The cited DM7 specification documents Dante; it does not establish compatibility with every third-party device.
- Separate computer I/O from simple USB recording: the SQ and DM7 figures above refer to multichannel USB audio interfaces. They should not be read as a claim about recording or playback directly from a USB thumb drive.
- Validate DAW and clocking requirements: confirm channel routing, sample-rate needs, computer compatibility, clocking, and any required expansion cards with the manufacturers and system integrator.
- Test the full workflow: check recording, playback, stream feeds, and any virtual soundcheck configuration with the exact console, software, and connected equipment.
The available manufacturer information documents selected console capabilities, not interoperability with every third-party system. Confirm the entire design rather than relying on a single specification.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Plan for continuity, support, and total system cost
For production-critical events and installations, consider what happens if a power supply, connection, or other part of the system fails. Yamaha lists dual power supplies for the DM7 series; Allen & Heath describes redundant power supplies and audio connections for dLive S Class. These specifications document features, not comparative field reliability.
Also assess operator familiarity, show-file workflow, local service access, rental availability, and the support arrangements offered for the actual deployment. A console’s purchase price alone would not capture the system budget: include stage I/O, networking, expansion cards, cases, training, support, and setup. Current prices, regional stock, rental rates, and local service coverage are not established here, so obtain local quotes rather than treating any model as a proven lower-cost choice.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The three families offer documented paths for different scales and workflows: SQ for compact professional live and computer-audio use; DM7 for a broad mix of live and media applications; and dLive for larger, complex touring, broadcast, or installed systems. That is a fit-based shortlist, not an exhaustive survey of professional consoles. It does not establish comparative market share, sales, sound quality, reliability, or value, and it is not based on hands-on testing.
