Use AI as a research organizer, not as your final authority. Give it your actual requirements, ask for a source-linked comparison, then verify every important claim in the manufacturer’s specifications, the exact seller listing, independent reviews, and the seller’s return policy. Before paying, compare the delivered cost, confirm who is responsible for return shipping, and save records of the offer and terms.
This process lets AI reduce search time without allowing a polished summary, a high star rating, or a prominent comparison result to conceal compatibility problems, biased reviews, hidden fees, or restrictive returns. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) offers U.S. consumer guidance on these checks; that guidance should not be treated as a statement of consumer law in every country.
What AI can—and cannot—do when you shop
An AI assistant is useful for translating a vague goal into buying criteria, finding potential candidates, organizing specifications, and highlighting questions you should investigate. It can also turn several product pages into a side-by-side table. Those are organizational and analytical tasks, not proof that a product is suitable or that a claim is current.
An assistant may have incomplete data, misunderstand a model number, merge specifications from different versions, or present an outdated price and delivery estimate. The FTC materials considered for this guide do not certify any shopping assistant as accurate, unbiased, current, or safe for sensitive information. Keep a person in the approval role for the final purchase.

How do I use AI to compare products?
1. Write a precise shopping brief
Do not start with only a category such as “laptop” or “mattress.” State the job the product must perform and the conditions in which you will use it. Include:
- Primary use and frequency.
- Must-have features and acceptable alternatives.
- Size, weight, ports, operating system, mounting pattern, or other compatibility limits.
- Maximum total budget, including delivery and taxes.
- Deal-breakers, such as subscriptions, refurbished condition, noise, or a particular material.
- Required arrival date and whether a delayed delivery would make the purchase useless.
- Your location when regional availability, voltage, language, or warranty coverage matters.
Ask the assistant to separate facts from inferences and to identify claims that require a source check. A prompt like this creates a useful audit trail:
I need a product for [intended use]. Must-have requirements: [list]. Nice-to-have requirements: [list]. Maximum delivered budget: [amount and currency]. Deal-breakers: [list]. I need it by [date] in [country/region]. Build a shortlist of no more than five exact models. For each, show model number, dimensions, included items, compatibility, warranty, seller, condition, delivery promise, and total known cost. Mark every field that needs confirmation and do not fill gaps with guesses.
Providing your location and currency prevents the assistant from silently mixing regional versions. If you use a prompt containing personal details, omit information that is not needed to answer the shopping question.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Require a comparison table, not a persuasive paragraph
Ask for one row per exact model and one column per decision criterion. Require a “not stated” entry where the assistant cannot find evidence. This prevents a confident-sounding summary from hiding an unknown specification. Add a column named “source to open” so you can inspect the original page yourself.
| Column to request | What to confirm on the original page |
|---|---|
| Exact identity | Manufacturer, model number, generation, color or capacity variant, and region. |
| Fit | Dimensions, weight, interfaces, capacity, power requirements, and compatibility with your equipment. |
| What is included | Accessories, software, consumables, batteries, chargers, adapters, and assembly parts. |
| Condition | New, open-box, refurbished, used, or clearance status. |
| Support | Warranty provider, duration, exclusions, and service region. |
| Transaction | Seller identity, stock status, delivery date, shipping method, taxes, and other fees. |
| After purchase | Return eligibility, deadline, return-shipping responsibility, restocking fee, and condition requirements. |
Verify AI’s claims at the original product and seller pages
Open the manufacturer’s specification page and the listing for the exact seller and item. Do not treat an AI-generated summary as a substitute for the live listing. Compare the model number character by character; similar names can represent different generations or capacities.

- Check the identity. Confirm the model, regional version, color or size, and whether the page describes a bundle rather than the base product.
- Check physical and technical fit. Measure your available space and compare the published dimensions. Confirm connector types, wireless standards, operating-system support, voltage, mounting hardware, and any required subscription.
- Check the box contents. A photograph may show accessories that are sold separately. Read the text list of included items.
- Check condition and warranty. Verify whether the item is new, refurbished, open-box, or used, who provides the warranty, and whether the warranty applies in your region.
- Check delivery language. Distinguish “ships in” from “arrives by.” A delivery estimate can change with inventory, seller location, and the shipping option selected.
- Record the page. Save the URL, date, price, and a screenshot or downloaded copy of material terms before checkout.
If the manufacturer and seller pages disagree, pause rather than averaging the numbers. The seller’s specific listing determines what you are being offered, while the manufacturer’s page helps you detect a misidentified or incompatible item. Ask the seller to resolve the discrepancy in writing.
Can I trust AI product recommendations?
Use a recommendation as a shortlist hypothesis, not a verdict. Trust increases when the assistant shows the exact source for each material claim, distinguishes missing information from a negative result, and reaches a conclusion that survives your own checks. A recommendation is weak when it relies on unnamed “top” lists, repeats a single retailer’s marketing copy, or cannot tell you which version it evaluated.
Test the recommendation by changing one requirement at a time. Ask, for example, which candidate remains if you remove a preferred feature, lower the budget, or require a specific return window. If the ranking changes dramatically without an explanation, the result may be driven by an unstated assumption.
Do not infer safety from fluency. An assistant can produce a coherent explanation while being wrong about a price, specification, availability, or policy. The FTC’s consumer materials provide shopping precautions, not a certification of any named AI tool’s accuracy, data practices, or neutrality.
How can I tell if product reviews are fake or misleading?
Start with several narrative reviews rather than the star average. The FTC advises that some reviews and ratings are fake or misleading, so a high average is not proof of authenticity. Fake activity can promote a product or damage a competitor; direction alone does not reveal the problem.

Assess the source and reviewer context
- Identify who published the review: an independent expert, a customer, a retailer, a manufacturer, or a publication with a commercial relationship.
- Look for disclosure of sponsorship, free products, affiliate relationships, or other incentives.
- Consider whether the reviewer has a history of detailed reviews in the same category or a profile consisting of near-identical one-line ratings.
- Check the review date against the product’s release and any redesign. A review of an earlier generation may not apply.
- Read enough detail to learn how the product performed in conditions similar to yours.
Look for patterns, not isolated anecdotes
Repeated, specific complaints—such as a connector failing with a named device or a dimension differing from the listing—deserve investigation. Repeated praise can be useful for the same reason. A sudden burst of reviews in a short period can be a warning signal, but it is not proof that the reviews are fake; investigate the timing and wording before deciding.

Do not overvalue “verified” labels
FTC staff guidance on online customer reviews says both open systems, where anyone may post, and closed systems, where purchases are supposedly verified, can face authenticity problems. A verification badge may describe a platform’s process, but it does not establish that every statement is accurate or unbiased.
Understand the 2024 FTC rule
In 2024, the FTC announced a final rule addressing specified fake or false reviews and testimonials. It includes certain AI-generated reviews that falsely represent a real person or experience, along with other deceptive practices. The rule concerns prohibited conduct; it is not a test you can apply to prove that an individual review is genuine. Continue examining the reviewer, evidence, timing, and disclosure.
Compare sellers and the full delivered cost
The cheapest displayed price may not be the cheapest purchase. For each seller, write down the item price, shipping and handling, taxes, required accessories, service plans, and any other mandatory fee. Use the same currency and product configuration for every row.
| Cost or risk | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Item price | Is this the exact model and condition you compared? |
| Shipping and handling | Is shipping free only with a membership or a particular method? |
| Taxes and duties | Are they shown before payment, and could cross-border charges apply? |
| Required extras | Do you need a charger, mount, subscription, proprietary cartridge, or adapter? |
| Delivery risk | Is the date guaranteed, estimated, or dependent on stock? |
| Return exposure | Could postage or a restocking fee erase the apparent savings? |
Comparison-shopping tools can help track prices and sellers, but the FTC cautions that some comparison sites list or rank only sellers that pay them. Treat a ranking as advertising or a lead unless the site clearly explains coverage and you have checked sellers that may not appear.
Rank #4
What should I check in a return policy before buying?
Read the policy for the exact seller and item, not a general help page. Sale, clearance, opened, customized, refurbished, and marketplace items may have different terms. Confirm the following before checkout:
- Eligibility: Is this item returnable, and does it qualify for a full refund rather than store credit or an exchange?
- Deadline: How many days do you have, and does the clock start at purchase, shipment, delivery, or activation?
- Condition: Must packaging, seals, accessories, serial numbers, or proof of purchase be retained?
- Return shipping: Who pays postage, and must you use a particular carrier or label?
- Fees: Is there a restocking, pickup, cancellation, or handling fee?
- Exceptions: Are software licenses, hygiene products, personalized goods, opened media, or clearance items excluded?
- Process: Do you need authorization before shipping, and where are instructions requested?
- Refund timing: When is the refund issued after receipt, and to which payment method?
- Delivery problems: What does the seller promise if the package is late, damaged, or marked delivered but missing?
The FTC specifically advises checking refund eligibility, return-shipping responsibility, the number of days available, and restocking fees. Treat those points as purchase criteria, not paperwork to review later. Save the policy and order confirmation because online terms can change after the transaction.

Shopping applications may collect contact, purchase, and location information. Before entering data, read the privacy policy and inspect available settings. Use only the information needed for the comparison; do not paste payment-card numbers, passwords, government identifiers, or private correspondence into a general assistant.
Check whether your prompts or uploaded documents are retained, used to improve a service, shared with vendors, or accessible to account administrators. The available FTC guidance does not establish how any particular AI shopping assistant stores or uses prompts, so you must review the tool’s current terms yourself. You can often compare products by supplying public specifications and a broad region rather than an exact address.
A practical decision framework for a final shortlist
After verification, score only evidence you can explain. You can use a simple worksheet with the following columns and a rating such as strong, adequate, weak, or unknown:
Best Value
- NO ADDITIONAL COST: You pay no fees for repairs, replacements or reimbursements. Shipping included.
- IMMEDIATE PROTECTION: Drops, spills, and cracked screens covered for portable products, plus power surge protection from day one. Malfunctions covered after the manufacturer’s warranty ends.
- EASY CLAIMS: File a claim in minutes at Asurion.com/amazon. We'll repair, replace, or reimburse you up to the purchase price (excluding tax).
- ELIGIBILITY: Plan must be purchased with your product or within 30 days of purchase. Pre-existing conditions are not covered. (Products for business or commercial use are excluded)
- TERMS AND DETAILS: Terms & Conditions are emailed within 24 hours and available in Your Orders on Amazon. More information about this protection plan is available within the “Product guides and documents” section. Simply click “User Guide” for more info.
| Criterion | Evidence to enter | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Fit to use | Verified specifications and compatibility notes. | Does it meet every must-have requirement? |
| Evidence quality | Manufacturer documentation, independent expert coverage, and varied customer experiences. | Can you corroborate important claims? |
| Review pattern | Recent, specific recurring praise and complaints; disclosure and reviewer context. | Are the known weaknesses acceptable? |
| Seller and condition | Seller identity, new/refurbished status, warranty, and stock. | Do you know exactly who will fulfill the order? |
| Total cost | Item, shipping, taxes, required extras, and likely return expense. | Is the delivered cost within budget? |
| Return protection | Eligibility, deadline, shipping responsibility, fees, and exceptions. | Could you realistically return it if it fails to fit? |
| Privacy cost | Data requested, retention, sharing, and settings. | Is the convenience worth the information supplied? |
Reject a candidate with an unresolved must-have failure, an unknown seller, or return terms you cannot accept, even if its rating or headline price is attractive. Keep the assistant’s output as a draft worksheet and your saved source pages as the evidence behind the decision.
Common AI-shopping mistakes and how to correct them
The assistant compares different versions
Symptom: One row describes a newer generation, a bundle, or a different capacity. Fix: Require exact model numbers and reopen every source page before comparing.
A summary repeats marketing language
Symptom: Benefits appear without measurements, test conditions, or a definition. Fix: Ask what the claim means operationally, then seek a specification or independent review that supports it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A star average hides divided experiences
Symptom: The average is high but recent detailed reviews describe a recurring defect. Fix: Separate reviews by date and version, identify the repeated issue, and check warranty and return exposure.
The “best deal” is not the lowest total
Symptom: Shipping, tax, accessories, or a membership appear late in checkout. Fix: Recalculate using the final cart and record every mandatory charge.
The return window expires before you can test the item
Symptom: The clock starts at shipment or the policy excludes opened products. Fix: Confirm the start date and condition rule before purchase; if they do not fit your testing needs, choose another seller or product.
Too much personal data is shared
Symptom: The tool requests contacts, precise location, purchase history, or unrelated account access. Fix: Decline optional permissions, provide a broad region, and use public product information where possible.
Keep a purchase record
Store the seller name, exact model, condition, price, fees, delivery promise, return policy, warranty information, and all important messages. Include the date and a screenshot or saved copy of pages that influenced your decision. If a dispute arises, this record shows what was offered when you bought it and gives you the information needed to request a return or refund.
Quick Recap
