The safest way to avoid unwanted pre-installed apps is to choose the operating system and its support plan before choosing a handset. In practice, that means either buying a currently supported phone and installing GrapheneOS yourself, or buying a Fairphone model sold with /e/OS already installed. The first route offers more control but requires setup and ongoing maintenance; the second is easier to start with but requires careful checking of update terms, app compatibility, verified boot, and regional availability.
No phone is automatically private because it carries a privacy label. Check the exact model, firmware-support window, default services, carrier behavior, repair options, and the applications you cannot live without.
What makes a phone privacy-focused?
A privacy-focused phone is not simply a device with fewer icons in its app drawer. Privacy depends on several layers working together:
- Software defaults: which account services, analytics components, app stores, and cloud integrations are enabled before you configure anything.
- Permission and sandbox controls: whether apps can be restricted without giving up basic phone functions.
- Security maintenance: how quickly the operating system and the manufacturer’s firmware receive fixes, and how long those updates continue.
- Verified boot: whether the phone can detect unauthorized changes to the operating system during startup.
- Hardware and carrier support: whether calls, messaging, emergency functions, accessibility tools, and network features continue to work with your carrier.
- Serviceability: whether the device can be repaired, returned, or replaced through a trustworthy local channel.
“No Google by default” is narrower than “Google is impossible.” GrapheneOS states that Google apps and services are not included or used by default, while official Google Play can be installed through its compatibility layer and run in the standard app sandbox. That gives you a choice rather than forcing one default.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Conversely, a phone sold with an alternative operating system is not automatically safer. Privacy Guides warns that buyers should check verified boot and the delivery of original-equipment firmware updates, especially when a reseller preloads an operating system. An end-of-life handset can lack important manufacturer patches even if its replacement operating system still launches.
The two realistic buying routes
| Route | Advantages | Checks before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a currently supported handset and install GrapheneOS yourself | Google apps and services are absent by default; you can add sandboxed Google Play only if particular apps need it. You control the installation and can follow the operating system’s official process. | Confirm the exact model is on GrapheneOS’s current production-support list; check the manufacturer’s remaining firmware-support period, bootloader-unlocking eligibility, carrier variant, essential apps, and network features. |
| Buy a Fairphone sold with /e/OS preinstalled | The alternative operating system is ready to use, so there is no operating-system installation step. Fairphone advertises /e/OS configurations for the Fairphone (Gen. 6) and Fairphone 5. | Confirm the model and /e/OS configuration currently sold in your country, the exact security-update terms, app requirements, verified-boot behavior, return policy, and ongoing /e/OS support. |
These routes are not interchangeable security guarantees. Compare the actual handset’s firmware support, operating-system maintenance, verified boot, compatibility, and service arrangements. Support lists, end-of-support dates, configurations, and regional stock can change, so check the official pages immediately before ordering.
Start with an app and service inventory
Write down what the phone must do before comparing operating systems. This prevents a privacy goal from turning into an unusable daily device.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- Banking, brokerage, government-identification, and insurance applications.
- Work login, two-factor authentication, device-management, and certificate tools.
- Contactless payment, transit tickets, loyalty cards, and digital keys.
- Messaging services, group chats, voice and video calling, and multimedia messages.
- Navigation, location sharing, ride services, delivery apps, and emergency alerts.
- Android Auto, wearable integration, smart-home controls, printers, and accessibility software.
- Carrier voicemail, visual voicemail, Wi-Fi calling, voice over LTE, multimedia messaging, and emergency calling.
Mark each item as “essential,” “useful,” or “replaceable.” For essential items, check the developer’s current requirements and test them on the exact operating-system configuration before moving your primary number. An app may install successfully yet still depend on a proprietary service, device-integrity check, or background component.
Verify support for the exact handset
GrapheneOS route
- Open GrapheneOS’s official FAQ and production-support documentation immediately before purchase.
- Match the complete model name and regional variant, not merely the phone family. Production support applies to listed models, and the list can change.
- Check the manufacturer’s remaining operating-system and security-firmware window. GrapheneOS support does not extend the manufacturer’s proprietary firmware indefinitely.
- Confirm that the bootloader can be unlocked on the variant you intend to buy. Carrier-specific models may impose restrictions.
- Read the current installation guide and make sure you have a compatible computer, a reliable cable, and time to restore accounts and data.
/e/OS route
- Identify the exact Fairphone model and storage or regional configuration being sold with /e/OS.
- Read the current /e/OS support information for that model, including security-patch cadence and any stated limitations.
- Check Fairphone’s terms for the model you are buying. Fairphone states an eight-year operating-system and security-update commitment for the Fairphone (Gen. 6); verify that the commitment applies to the configuration and market you will purchase.
- Confirm whether the seller is the manufacturer or an authorized channel, and determine who handles warranty, returns, firmware delivery, and repairs.
- Test your essential apps and carrier functions before transferring your number or selling your old phone.
Understand what alternative installation changes
Replacing the stock operating system can alter behavior that the manufacturer and carrier normally test together. GrapheneOS documents common mobile functions but notes that some capabilities depend on carrier support or proprietary applications.
Calling and messaging
Ask your carrier specifically about voice over LTE, Wi-Fi calling, visual voicemail, multimedia messages, short-code services, and emergency calling on the exact model and software. A phone can have the right radio bands yet still lack a carrier’s proprietary configuration. Keep a second way to contact emergency services while testing a newly installed system.

Payments and identity checks
Payment, banking, workplace, and government apps can apply their own integrity or service requirements. Do not assume that installing sandboxed Google Play resolves every check. Look for a supported-app statement from the provider, install the current release, and complete a real test transaction or login before relying on the phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAccessories and vehicle systems
Check Android Auto, watches, hearing devices, keyboards, printers, and smart-home hubs individually. Their companion apps may require background services, nearby-device permissions, or vendor components that are not included in a privacy-focused default.
Installing GrapheneOS safely
GrapheneOS recommends that the owner install it through the official installation process rather than relying on an unknown reseller. Use the current guide, because browser steps, supported models, and prerequisites can change.

- [360 ° Flexible Rotation Design] Comes with a rotatable lanyard ring that supports 360 ° free rotation, effectively solving the problem of twisted and tangled lanyards
- [Wide compatibility] The ultra-thin 0.02-inch design does not block the charging port at all, and both wired and wireless charging can be used directly without removing the pad. Compatible with most smartphones such as iPhone, compatible with various wristbands, lanyards, crossbody straps, and keychains
- [Durable and Portable Material] Premium rust-resistant stainless steel material with good flexibility, which not only avoids scratching the phone case, but also has excellent anti rust and anti fading performance
- [Multi scenario Practical] Paired with a lanyard or wristband, hands-free use can be achieved. The phone is within reach and not easily dropped, ideal for daily commuting and outdoor activities. Suitable for full coverage phone cases, does not support half coverage phone cases
- [Quality Service] If you find any damage or other issues with the product upon receipt, please contact us immediately. We will handle it quickly
- Back up first. Export photos, authenticator accounts, password-manager recovery data, messages, and any files that are not synchronized elsewhere. An operating-system replacement can erase the phone.
- Check the model and bootloader. Confirm production support and that the specific carrier or regional variant permits unlocking.
- Prepare the computer. Use the supported browser and a known-good data cable. Keep the phone charged and avoid a computer that may sleep or disconnect during installation.
- Follow the official installer. Enable the required developer and bootloader settings only when the guide instructs you, unlock the bootloader, and flash the matching release.
- Relock when instructed. A correctly completed installation should restore the security model, including verified boot, according to the project’s procedure. Do not leave the bootloader unlocked as a casual workaround.
- Reboot and update. Install available system updates before restoring applications. Record the date and software version so you can identify the baseline if troubleshooting is needed.
- Add only what you need. Leave Google Play absent if your required apps work without it. If an app needs it, install the official compatibility components using GrapheneOS’s documented method and grant permissions deliberately.
- Test before migration. Make a call, send an MMS, test Wi-Fi calling if you use it, sign in to essential services, and verify navigation and accessibility functions.
Never treat a successful boot as proof that every service works. Test the functions you depend on while your previous phone is still available.
Buying a phone with /e/OS preinstalled
A preinstalled configuration removes the operating-system flashing step, which is useful if you do not want to unlock a bootloader or maintain an installation yourself. It does not remove the need for due diligence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the phone is genuinely shipped with /e/OS, not merely advertised as compatible with it.
- Check who signs and delivers system updates, how often security fixes arrive, and how long the stated support lasts.
- Verify that the device retains a trustworthy verified-boot path and that original firmware updates remain available.
- Review the default app store, account services, synchronization options, and permission controls during initial setup.
- Check whether your essential apps are available through the included store or another supported installation method.
- Confirm repairability, spare-part access, warranty coverage, and return rights in your country.
Fairphone’s /e/OS offering is a product configuration, not a universal guarantee for every Fairphone model or market. Availability and terms can change; read the current product and support pages for the exact device.

Can you avoid unwanted apps without replacing Android?
Often, yes. If your main complaint is clutter rather than the stock operating system’s trust model, start with lower-risk changes:
- During first setup, decline optional account synchronization, recommendations, and promotional notifications.
- Uninstall apps the system allows you to remove. For apps that cannot be uninstalled, use the system’s disable option if it is available and safe for your device.
- Revoke permissions that an app does not need, especially location, contacts, microphone, camera, nearby devices, and background activity.
- Turn off notifications and background data for services you do not use.
- Use a different launcher or browser only after checking its maintenance and privacy practices.
- Install updates from the manufacturer and app developers; removing an icon does not replace security maintenance.
Do not disable a package merely because its name is unfamiliar. Phone, network, emergency, accessibility, update, and authentication components can look like “bloat” while providing essential functions. If a package cannot be safely removed through the normal interface, replacing the operating system is a larger intervention than the original problem warrants.
Evaluate security support, not just privacy defaults
Ask four separate questions for every candidate:
- Who supplies operating-system updates? Is it the handset maker, the alternative-OS project, or both?
- Who supplies proprietary firmware fixes? Modem, bootloader, graphics, and other low-level components may follow the manufacturer’s schedule.
- How much support remains? A used phone near end of life may be cheap but still lack full OEM patches.
- Can the system prove its state at boot? Verify how verified boot works after installation or on the preloaded configuration.
Privacy Guides recommends buying a device as new as possible because end-of-life hardware does not receive the full set of manufacturer firmware patches. A reseller’s statement that an alternative operating system is “preloaded” is not evidence of continuing security maintenance.

Privacy and serviceability are connected. A phone that cannot be repaired locally may be replaced more often, increasing data-transfer and account-recovery risk. Before purchase, check:
- Battery replacement method and parts availability.
- Screen, charging-port, camera, and back-cover repair options.
- Warranty exclusions after bootloader unlocking or operating-system changes.
- Return deadlines and whether a modified device can be returned.
- Local network compatibility and access to replacement parts.
- Whether your data can be securely erased before a repair or return.
Do not infer these conditions from the operating system. They belong to the handset, seller, and jurisdiction.
A practical decision framework
Choose the self-installed route when
- You are comfortable following a technical installation guide and maintaining updates.
- Your exact handset is currently supported and has a substantial manufacturer firmware window remaining.
- You want Google services off by default but may add sandboxed compatibility for selected apps.
- You can test carrier and app behavior before making the phone your only device.
Choose a preinstalled /e/OS configuration when
- You want to avoid flashing an operating system yourself.
- The exact model is officially sold with /e/OS in your country and has clear update terms.
- Your essential apps and carrier features work without undocumented workarounds.
- You have verified who supplies support, repairs, returns, and firmware updates.
Keep the stock system when
- Your essential banking, work, payment, accessibility, or carrier functions are not confirmed on an alternative system.
- The handset is near the end of its firmware-support period.
- Your main issue is a manageable set of removable or disableable apps.
- You cannot recover accounts or data if installation fails.
After purchase: a privacy-maintenance routine
- Install system and firmware updates before adding personal data.
- Use a unique screen lock and store recovery codes offline.
- Review permissions after every major app installation.
- Remove accounts and revoke tokens before lending, repairing, or returning the phone.
- Keep a current backup and periodically verify that it can be restored.
- Recheck support status annually and before buying a used replacement.
- When a critical app changes its requirements, test it before an operating-system update or travel.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying by family name alone: verify the exact model and regional variant against the current support list.
- Assuming optional Google compatibility is universal: test each banking, payment, and work app independently.
- Ignoring the carrier: confirm VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, voicemail, MMS, and emergency behavior with your provider.
- Trusting a reseller’s preinstallation claim: identify the update supplier, verified-boot status, and firmware-support window.
- Using an end-of-life handset: choose newer hardware with remaining manufacturer patches.
- Unlocking without a recovery plan: back up authenticators, recovery codes, and irreplaceable files before installation.
- Confusing fewer icons with stronger privacy: evaluate defaults, permissions, updates, firmware, and data flows together.
The bottom line
Choose the phone with the clearest, still-current support story—not the one with the most persuasive privacy slogan. For maximum control, buy a model on GrapheneOS’s official production-support list, verify its manufacturer firmware window and carrier compatibility, and install GrapheneOS through the official guide. For less technical setup, consider a Fairphone configuration sold with /e/OS, but verify the exact model, update commitment, verified boot, app behavior, and local warranty. If your essential services are unverified or the device is near end of life, a carefully debloated stock phone is safer than an unsupported alternative installation.
