If Microsoft Edge keeps choosing the wrong printer, first select the intended device in Edge’s print dialog. If Windows keeps changing the system default, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer and set the printer you want. The nine checks below move from quick per-print choices to Windows, driver, and administrator-managed settings; stop once printing works as intended.
1. Select the intended printer in Edge
Open the page or document in Edge and press Ctrl+P. In the printer list, choose the installed printer you actually want to use, check the preview, and print. Edge lets you choose a printer for the current print job; a printer merely appearing first in the list does not mean it is the one you must use. See Microsoft’s instructions for printing in Edge.
2. Reopen the print dialog and choose again
If the selected printer is marked unavailable, or Edge reports a preview problem, cancel the print attempt, reopen the dialog, and select the intended printer again. A temporary connection issue can affect printer availability. If the printer is still unavailable, check its status and connection before repeatedly sending the job. Microsoft recommends reselecting the printer when Edge’s preview reports a problem in its Edge printing troubleshooting steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Try the Windows system print dialog
Edge’s own print interface and Windows’ system dialog are different routes to the printer. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+P to open the system print dialog directly, then confirm the selected printer before printing. You can also choose Print using system dialog from Edge’s print flow. If the system dialog shows the correct device while Edge’s dialog does not, use the system dialog as a practical workaround while you check Edge’s selection behavior. Microsoft documents the shortcut in its Edge printing guide.

4. Set the Windows default printer you want
If you want Windows’ system default to be a particular device, set it in Windows 11:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Turn off Let Windows manage my default printer.
- Select the intended installed printer and choose Set as default.
If Set as default is not available, verify that automatic default management is turned off. Follow Microsoft’s steps to set a default printer in Windows.

5. Keep Windows from switching the default to your last-used printer
Windows can automatically make the last printer you used the default. If you want a fixed default, leave Let Windows manage my default printer turned off in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. If you deliberately move between locations and want Windows to follow recent printer use, you may prefer to leave it on; that setting is designed to change the default based on the last-used printer. This Windows behavior is separate from choosing a printer for one job in Edge. Microsoft explains the setting in its default-printer instructions.

6. Check for missing, unavailable, or duplicate printer entries
Look carefully at the printer names in Edge and Windows. Select the entry that corresponds to the intended device and is currently available; similar names can make it easy to choose a different queue or device. Don’t remove a working printer just because Edge preselected another one. If the intended printer is missing or was installed incorrectly, Microsoft’s Windows guidance supports removing and reinstalling that printer. Use its instructions for printer connection and printing problems.

7. Restart Edge and try again
Close Edge completely, reopen it, return to the page or document, and select the preferred printer again. Microsoft recommends restarting Edge as a troubleshooting step for print-preview failures. This is a low-risk retry, not a change to Windows’ default-printer setting; if Edge keeps selecting the wrong device, continue to the Windows checks instead of treating a restart as a permanent fix. See Microsoft’s Edge printing troubleshooting steps.
8. Test whether another app has the same problem
Try printing a document from Word or another Windows application. This helps identify whether the problem is confined to Edge’s selection or affects printing more broadly:

- Other apps print to the right device: Focus on Edge’s printer selection and its print dialog.
- Other apps also fail or use the wrong device: Investigate Windows, the printer queue, the driver, hardware, or connectivity instead of assuming Edge is responsible.
Microsoft recommends comparing print results from other applications and documents when diagnosing Edge issues. If the problem crosses apps, use the Windows printer troubleshooting guide.
9. Check the driver or ask IT about printer-selection policy
If only Edge is affected
Check the printer manufacturer’s support site for the latest driver for your model and Windows version, then follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Microsoft suggests checking for a current manufacturer driver when printing problems persist in Edge. Don’t assume a driver is the cause if the only issue is that a different printer is preselected.

If the device is managed by your organization
Ask your IT administrator to review Edge’s DefaultPrinterSelection policy if the browser repeatedly starts with a particular printer. Microsoft says this policy determines the rules for selecting the default printer the first time a user tries to print. It can match a printer by ID or display-name pattern; if a configured rule does not match within the timeout, Edge can fall back to its built-in PDF printer or no printer. This is policy behavior on managed setups, not proof that consumer Edge universally changes printers. Refer policy changes to IT rather than editing registry policy settings yourself. See Microsoft’s DefaultPrinterSelection policy documentation, last updated May 22, 2026.
When the job prints somewhere other than the device you selected
There is a difference between Edge preselecting the wrong entry and a job going to another physical device after you have selected the intended printer. In the second case, confirm the exact printer or queue name in the dialog and compare the result from another app. If other apps show the same behavior, follow Windows’ connection and printing troubleshooting, which includes the Get Help printer troubleshooter, connection checks, driver installation, printer reinstallation, and print-spooler troubleshooting. Those steps address evidence of a broader printer or Windows problem, not merely an unwanted Edge selection. Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; consult its current Windows printer troubleshooting page for supported guidance.
