The right pressure sensor is the one whose pressure reference, range, transient rating, wetted materials, connection, electrical signal, temperature limits, and environmental protection all match your circuit. Start by documenting the fluid and operating conditions, then select gauge, absolute, or vacuum measurement; size the range for both normal pressure and spikes; verify accuracy on the manufacturer’s stated basis; and only then choose the port and output. No single sensor suits every compact fluid system.
What a pressure sensor must measure in a compact fluid circuit
A pressure sensor (often sold as a pressure transducer or transmitter) converts fluid pressure into an electrical signal. In a small pump loop, dosing manifold, laboratory rig, cooling circuit, or pneumatic test fixture, the sensor may feed a controller, data logger, alarm, display, or closed-loop control algorithm. A physically small part is not automatically suitable: the measurement reference, pressure limits, wetted construction, and signal interface determine whether the reading is useful and whether the sensor survives the application.
WIKA’s selection guidance frames the decision around where and how the instrument will be used, the demands placed on it, and whether particular features are necessary. That is a better starting point than choosing by body size or a headline accuracy number alone. See the guidance at WIKA’s pressure-sensor selection guide.

1. Describe the application and the fluid first
Write an application profile before looking at part numbers. Record the following values for the actual installation, not just the nominal specification of the pump or valve:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Fluid composition: water with additives, oil, solvent, refrigerant, air, steam, or a process mixture. “Water” and “oil” are broad labels; concentration, pH, dissolved chemicals, and additives can change compatibility.
- Temperature: normal, minimum, maximum, and any short-duration excursions. Sensor accuracy and materials can change with temperature.
- Cleanliness: sterile or hygienic service, ordinary clean fluid, or a circuit that may contain particles, fibers, crystals, or biological growth.
- Physical behavior: viscosity, suspended solids, tendency to crystallize, and whether the fluid can plug a small pressure passage.
- Corrosiveness: include the fluid’s chemistry and concentration, not merely a category such as “mildly corrosive.”
- Cleaning and maintenance: whether the sensor must tolerate flushing, cleaning-in-place, steam, solvents, or frequent removal.
In food and beverage equipment, cleanliness, the process connection, and the choice of transmission fluid—or a design with no transmission fluid—can be decisive. The pressure boundary must be compatible with the cleaning regime as well as the product. A general material chart is only a screening tool; use the exact model’s datasheet for the final decision.
Wetted parts are the compatibility boundary
Identify every part that contacts the medium: diaphragm, port, seals, welds, fill fluid, and any internal isolation material. TE Connectivity gives general guidance for materials such as 17-4 PH stainless steel and 316L stainless steel, with more specialized alloys available for demanding media, but that information does not replace the compatibility table for the selected configuration. Review TE’s product-family information at TE Connectivity’s pressure-transducer overview.
Check compatibility at the actual temperature and concentration. A seal that works in room-temperature water may swell in a cleaning chemical; a metal that is acceptable in a dilute solution may pit in a concentrated one. If the fluid can solidify or leave deposits, include a cleaning method and inspection interval in the design rather than treating clogging as an unlikely failure.

Pressure reference is a functional choice, not a labeling detail. Select the reference that matches the decision your controller or experiment must make:
| Reference | What the sensor compares | Typical reason to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gauge | Process pressure relative to local atmospheric pressure | Monitoring a pump discharge, filter differential setup, or vessel pressure where ambient pressure is the natural zero | The reading changes when atmospheric pressure changes; it is not an absolute vacuum measurement. |
| Absolute | Process pressure relative to a sealed vacuum reference | Applications involving vacuum, boiling point, gas calculations, or pressure that must be comparable across locations and weather | An absolute reading cannot be interpreted as gauge pressure without accounting for atmospheric pressure. |
| Vacuum or low pressure | Pressure below atmospheric pressure, using the reference defined by the instrument | Vacuum lines, suction monitoring, and low-pressure experiments | Confirm the specified vacuum range and whether the output increases or decreases through the operating region. |
WIKA lists gauge, absolute, and vacuum/low-pressure measurement among the basic selection considerations. Keep units consistent across the sensor label, calculations, controller configuration, and recorded data. Common customary and SI units can all be valid; the best unit is the one used consistently by the people and equipment operating the system.
3. Set the pressure range for normal operation and transients
Write down three pressures before selecting full scale:

- Normal operating range: the span in which the controller or operator needs useful resolution.
- Maximum credible pressure: the highest pressure that could occur during a blocked outlet, failed regulator, or incorrect valve position.
- Transient pressure: short spikes from pump startup, rapid valve closure, water hammer, pulsation, pressure testing, or a trapped thermal expansion event.
WIKA advises leaving buffer for pulsation and spikes. DwyerOmega specifically identifies operating mistakes, water hammer, and failure to isolate an instrument during pressure testing or startup as ways an overpressure event can damage a transducer. Read its selection discussion at DwyerOmega’s pressure-transducer selection criteria.

A very wide full-scale range protects against a large spike but can make ordinary readings less useful when accuracy is specified as a percentage of full scale. For example, an accuracy expressed as a percentage of a high full-scale value produces a larger absolute error at the low end than the same percentage on a lower range. An undersized range has the opposite problem: normal operation may look precise, but a credible transient can exceed the diaphragm or electronics rating.
Do not turn a generic margin into an engineering rule without checking the specific datasheet. Compare:
- Proof or allowable overpressure: the pressure the sensor can withstand without permanent damage.
- Burst pressure: the limit associated with mechanical rupture; it is not an operating target.
- Continuous pressure rating: the pressure permitted for the intended service and duty cycle.
- Transient response and cycling limits: whether repeated pulsation is allowed and whether damping is recommended.
The process connection needs its own pressure rating. TE notes that higher pressure ranges require a connection rated for that pressure; a sensor body with a suitable range is not enough if the thread, tube, fitting, or seal is the weak link.
4. Define the accuracy your decision actually needs
Start with the consequence of error. A simple high-pressure alarm may tolerate more error than a dosing calculation, a calibration fixture, or a feedback loop that must hold a narrow pressure band. State the maximum acceptable measurement error in the units used by the application, then map it to the sensor specification.
Compare like with like. A datasheet may specify:
- Full-scale or span accuracy: the error relative to the selected range or span.
- Linearity: deviation from the specified output curve.
- Hysteresis: difference in output for the same pressure approached from increasing and decreasing directions.
- Temperature effects: zero and span shifts across the operating temperature range.
- Total error: a combined figure that may include several contributors under stated conditions.
These terms are not interchangeable. A sensor advertised as “0.25% accurate” is incomplete information until you know whether that is percent of span, full scale, a room-temperature value, or a total-error limit over a temperature range. TE’s MEAS EB100 page lists an example accuracy of ±0.25% span for particular configurations; it is a product specification, not a universal requirement or guarantee for every EB100 variant. Review the configuration details at TE Connectivity’s MEAS EB100 product page.

5. Verify the mechanical interface
The sensor must fit the fluid path without creating a leak, an obstruction, or an unserviceable assembly. Confirm all of these items against the drawing for the exact part number:
- Port thread and gender: for example, the specified metric or inch thread and whether the port is male or female.
- Seal method: O-ring, bonded seal, conical metal seal, thread sealant, or another method approved for the fluid and pressure.
- Pressure rating of the mating fitting: include tubing, adapters, manifolds, and quick-disconnects.
- Insertion depth and clearance: avoid a probe that bottoms out, blocks a narrow passage, or cannot be removed with the surrounding hardware installed.
- Mounting orientation and support: account for vibration, unsupported tubing, and the weight of an adapter stack.
- Flushness and cleanability: choose a flush diaphragm or equivalent design where a conventional recess could collect viscous material or solids.
TE lists multiple thread and connection options across its pressure-transducer families, so a connector that fits one model should not be assumed to fit another. In a viscous or solids-bearing circuit, WIKA describes its S-11 flush pressure transmitter as an example of a design intended to reduce blockage risk. The same principle applies to any manufacturer: confirm the flush surface, cleaning method, and pressure rating for the exact model rather than selecting a flush port by appearance alone.
6. Match the output, supply, and receiving electronics
Choose the electrical interface only after identifying the device that will read it. Check the controller or data-acquisition input type, allowable voltage or current, resolution, update rate, grounding arrangement, and cable length. Then verify the sensor’s:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- output type and pressure-to-output direction;
- supply-voltage range and current draw;
- wiring and connector pinout;
- electromagnetic-noise tolerance and shielding requirements;
- short-circuit, reverse-polarity, and overvoltage protections, if required;
- calibration or scaling information needed by the receiver.
As a concrete example, selected TE MEAS EB100 configurations list a 0.5–4.5 V output and an 8–30 V supply. Those values apply to the specified configurations, not to every miniature pressure sensor. Ensure the receiving analog input can accept the entire signal range and that the supply remains within limits during startup and cable-voltage drop.
7. Check temperature, environment, and maintenance
Small systems often place the sensor close to pumps, motors, heaters, or outdoor plumbing, where environmental conditions are harsher than the fluid temperature alone suggests. Evaluate:
- Process and ambient temperature: include heat conducted through a metal fitting and short excursions.
- Moisture and ingress: select an enclosure and connector appropriate for splash, condensation, washdown, or immersion exposure.
- Vibration and shock: support the tubing and avoid transmitting pump vibration directly into the port.
- Electrical noise: separate low-level signal wiring from motor and solenoid conductors, and follow the manufacturer’s grounding and shielding instructions.
- Hazardous-area requirements: if flammable gases, vapors, or dust are present, verify the required certification before installation.
- Approvals: hygienic, medical, marine, or other sector approvals may be mandatory even when the pressure range is suitable.
- Serviceability: plan isolation valves, drain points, calibration access, and a safe replacement procedure.
Optional digital diagnostics, displays, or configuration software can be useful when they solve a real commissioning or maintenance problem. WIKA cautions that additional software features also add complexity and potential failure opportunities; a simple analog circuit can be the more robust choice when the controller already provides the needed scaling and diagnostics.

9. How to compare two or more real candidates
Put the candidates in one worksheet and compare the same fields. A side-by-side review should include at least the following axes:
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Reference and usable range | Is it gauge, absolute, or vacuum? Does the normal operating band use enough of the span? | Determines what the reading means and how much resolution is available. |
| Proof, overpressure, and transient tolerance | What are the continuous, proof, burst, and pulsation limits? Is water hammer addressed? | Protects the sensing element during faults and fast pressure changes. |
| Accuracy basis | Is the figure percent of span or full scale? What are linearity, hysteresis, temperature, and total-error limits? | Prevents an apparently small percentage from becoming an unacceptable absolute error. |
| Wetted materials | Are diaphragm, seals, port, welds, and fill fluid compatible at the real temperature and concentration? | Reduces corrosion, swelling, contamination, and premature failure. |
| Port, seal, and dimensions | Does the thread, gender, seal, insertion depth, and mounting envelope fit without unsafe adapters? | A mechanically incompatible sensor cannot be made reliable by electrical calibration. |
| Output and supply | Does the receiver accept the signal, supply, wiring, and update behavior? | A correct pressure measurement is useless if the controller cannot read it correctly. |
| Environment and approvals | Will it tolerate temperature, moisture, vibration, noise, hazardous areas, and required certifications? | Determines reliability and legal or site acceptance. |
| Maintenance | Can it be isolated, cleaned, calibrated, and replaced without draining or contaminating the whole system? | Controls lifecycle downtime and service risk. |
10. Product examples—and what they do not prove
TE MEAS EB100
TE Connectivity’s MEAS EB100 is an example of a miniature absolute pressure transducer for liquid or gas pressure. The manufacturer describes applications including contaminated water, steam, and mildly corrosive fluids, and presents configurable pressure ranges, port options, a 0.5–4.5 V output, an 8–30 V supply, and example accuracy of ±0.25% span. Those are configuration-dependent specifications. Because the EB100 measures absolute pressure, it is not automatically a substitute for a gauge sensor in a pump loop. Confirm the selected range, wetted materials, temperature, connection, overpressure rating, and controller interface on the product page and datasheet: MEAS EB100 details.
Honeywell miniature-transducer families
Honeywell’s Test & Measurement Pressure Transducer Range Guide documents miniature transducers used for fluid-pump pressure among other applications. It provides series-specific ranges, outputs, materials, and accuracy information. Treat those entries as family-level options: the exact series and configuration still must pass the application, reference, transient, compatibility, mechanical, electrical, and environmental checks above. The document is marked 2019 in the available guide; confirm the current revision and availability before specifying a production build.
11. Common selection mistakes and corrective actions
Choosing by pressure range alone
Symptom: the sensor survives normal operation but fails during startup or a blocked line. Correction: document credible spikes and test pressures, then compare proof, burst, and pulsation limits. Add isolation or damping where the system design calls for it, rather than relying on a nominal range label.
Using an absolute sensor where the control logic expects gauge pressure
Symptom: the displayed pressure appears offset by atmospheric pressure or alarms trigger at the wrong value. Correction: verify the reference in the part number and controller scaling. If absolute pressure is required, keep it; if the process decision is relative to atmosphere, select or mathematically convert to the appropriate gauge reference.

Accepting a percentage accuracy without its basis
Symptom: a sensor that looked accurate on paper produces too much error at the low end or when the temperature changes. Correction: identify span versus full-scale accuracy and include linearity, hysteresis, temperature effects, and total error in the error budget.
Ignoring the weakest mechanical component
Symptom: leaks, damaged threads, or a failed adapter occur even though the sensor rating is adequate. Correction: rate the complete pressure boundary—including fittings, seals, tubing, manifold, and adapters—and use the specified sealing method.
Allowing a viscous or dirty fluid to plug the port
Symptom: the reading responds slowly, sticks, or remains at the last pressure after the process changes. Correction: evaluate a flush connection, a remote diaphragm arrangement, filtration, or a serviceable impulse path. Confirm that the chosen design can be cleaned without damaging the diaphragm or seals.
Pairing a valid sensor with an incompatible input
Symptom: the controller clips, reports an implausible value, or is noisy despite correct pressure. Correction: check output range, supply, polarity, grounding, shielding, cable drop, and analog-input limits as a complete signal-chain design.
