Choose a phone power bank by matching three things to your phone: usable energy (listed in both mAh and Wh), supported charging protocol and output wattage, and the ports’ actual input/output roles. Then check whether output is shared between ports, whether the size suits your bag, and whether its Wh rating meets your airline’s rules.
Do not choose on mAh alone. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) converts capacity with Wh = (mAh ÷ 1000) × voltage, so voltage matters when comparing banks or checking flight limits. A higher-wattage bank also cannot force a phone to charge faster than the phone’s own specifications allow.
Start with your phone’s requirements
Before comparing products, identify the specifications that determine what a bank can actually do for your phone. Look in the phone manufacturer’s technical specifications, support pages, or the manual for its maximum wired charging power and supported charging standard. Record the connector you use, such as USB-C or a proprietary connector with a USB cable, and whether you need to charge another device at the same time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Maximum charging power: note the phone’s published wattage or charging mode. This is the practical ceiling; a bank rated for more watts does not make the phone draw more.
- Charging protocol: check whether the phone specifies USB Power Delivery (USB PD) or another standard. The bank must support a compatible protocol, not merely advertise a large wattage number.
- Cable and connector: a USB-C port on the bank does not guarantee that every USB-C cable or phone combination will provide the same charging mode. Use a cable appropriate for the phone and the bank’s stated capability.
- Daily use: decide whether you need one emergency top-up, several top-ups, or simultaneous charging for a phone and another device.
USB-IF maintains the USB Power Delivery specifications and compliance material. Its document library currently lists USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.2 Version 1.2, dated September 14, 2026; that listing is standards context, not a universal recommendation for a particular wattage. See the USB-IF USB Power Delivery document library and compare the exact requirements of your phone with the bank’s output listing.

How many mAh do you need?
mAh describes charge capacity, but it is not a direct promise of how many times a phone will recharge. A power bank stores energy at a specified internal voltage, while the phone battery has its own voltage and the charging process loses some energy. The same mAh number can therefore represent different watt-hours, and a phone cannot use every listed watt-hour as delivered energy.
Convert mAh to Wh
Use the FAA’s formula: Wh = (mAh ÷ 1000) × voltage. For example, if a bank states 10,000 mAh at a stated 3.7 V cell voltage, the calculation is 10 × 3.7 = 37 Wh. Treat that as the bank’s stored-energy comparison, not a guaranteed amount delivered to the phone. Use the voltage printed on the bank or its technical documentation; do not substitute a guessed voltage when checking airline limits.
Wh is the better common unit when comparing banks with different cell voltages, estimating whether a bank is within an airline limit, or comparing a bank with a phone or tablet whose capacity is given in watt-hours. Keep the original mAh and the stated voltage alongside the calculated Wh so another person can reproduce the calculation.
Why a recharge count is only an estimate
A listing may imply a certain number of phone recharges, but a defensible count requires the phone’s battery energy and the bank’s real delivered energy. Cable resistance, conversion electronics, charging temperature, the phone being used while charging, and the point at which charging stops all affect the result. Because those variables are not established by a capacity label, do not treat a fixed “number of charges” as a guarantee.
Instead, compare the bank’s stated Wh with the phone’s published battery capacity in Wh, if available, and leave room for conversion losses. If the phone reports only mAh, use its stated battery voltage to make a comparable Wh calculation. If either voltage is unknown, retain the two mAh figures as rough, non-equivalent indicators rather than presenting a precise recharge count.
Capacity trade-offs
- Lower capacity: generally means less stored energy and often a smaller, lighter option for an emergency top-up.
- Higher capacity: provides more energy for long days or multiple devices, but usually adds bulk and may be more restrictive for air travel if the Wh rating approaches a regulatory limit.
- Very high capacity: check the printed Wh before buying for travel. The mAh figure alone is not enough to determine whether it can fly.
Will the power bank fast-charge your phone?
Fast charging requires a compatible negotiation between the phone, bank and cable. Match both the bank’s supported protocol and its output profile to the phone manufacturer’s specifications. A bank that advertises 65 W, for example, may still charge a phone at a lower rate if the phone supports less power or does not support the bank’s protocol.

Read the output specification, not just the headline wattage
Look for a table or label that states the voltage-and-current profiles and the maximum output for each port. A single maximum wattage may apply only to one port, a particular protocol, or a special operating condition. If the phone requires USB PD, confirm that the bank explicitly lists USB PD rather than inferring compatibility from a USB-C connector.
USB-IF specifications define how USB Power Delivery sources and sinks negotiate power. Certification language or a USB-C shape alone does not establish that a product supports the charging profile your phone uses. The bank’s manual should identify supported modes; the phone’s manufacturer remains the authority for its maximum supported input.
Use the phone’s ceiling as the buying target
- Find the phone’s maximum wired charging power and supported protocol in its manufacturer documentation.
- Choose a bank that lists that protocol and an output profile meeting the phone’s requirement.
- Check that the cable is rated for the negotiated mode and power.
- If you will charge two devices, read the combined-output specification before assuming either device will retain its single-port speed.
Buying substantially more wattage can be useful when the same bank will later charge a tablet or laptop, but it is not a phone-speed upgrade by itself. For a phone-only kit, prioritize verified protocol compatibility, clear output profiles and convenient size over an inflated maximum number.
Understand every port’s role
Port count is not the same as capability. A bank can have several connectors while only one supports fast output, while another accepts input for recharging the bank. Some USB-C ports are dual-role: they can act as a source to charge a device or a sink to recharge the bank. USB-IF describes source, sink and dual-role configurations for power banks.
USB-IF compliance guidance for USB-C power banks states: “All ports must be clearly labeled to indicate their power capabilities.” See the USB-IF compliance updates for USB-C power banks. Use the printed labels and the manual to determine the role of each connector.
Make a port map before purchasing
| Question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Which ports output power? | Identify every source/output port and its maximum profile. | A connector intended only to recharge the bank will not charge your phone. |
| Which port recharges the bank? | Check input-only ports and their maximum input power. | Input capability affects how long the bank takes to refill. |
| Is a USB-C port dual-role? | Look for explicit source-and-sink or input/output labeling. | A dual-role port can simplify cables, but its two directions are not simultaneous on one connection. |
| What connector does your cable use? | Match USB-C, USB-A or another connector to the cable you carry. | Adapters can add inconvenience and may change the supported charging mode. |
Check whether multi-port output is shared
When two devices are connected, some banks preserve a rated output independently at each port, while others allocate a shared total. A product might list a high maximum for one port but reduce that port when another connector is used. Read both the per-port ratings and the combined-output rule.

USB-IF material on USB Type-C multi-port chargers distinguishes assured capacity from shared capacity. Its USB Type-C multi-port charger port-identification and source-power material illustrates why a port’s individual rating is not enough to predict simultaneous performance.
Questions to answer in the specification
- What is the maximum output when only the first port is used?
- What is the maximum output when only the second port is used?
- What is the combined wattage when both ports are active?
- Does connecting a low-power accessory change the main phone port’s profile?
- Does the bank automatically rebalance output, and are the new limits documented?
If the combined figure is not stated, do not assume that both devices will charge at their single-port maximum. Choose a bank with an explicit simultaneous-output table when two-device charging is important.
Compare candidate power banks systematically
Put the specifications side by side instead of relying on product names or a single capacity number. The following fields cover the decisions that affect a phone user most.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Comparison axis | Record for each candidate | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Stated mAh, stated voltage and calculated Wh | Prefer the Wh amount that fits your use and travel limits; do not compare mAh without voltage. |
| Phone compatibility | Supported protocol, voltage/current profiles and maximum output | Require a protocol and profile compatible with the phone’s published requirements. |
| Ports | Connector type, output ports, input port and dual-role behavior | Choose the arrangement that matches your cables and charging routine. |
| Simultaneous charging | Per-port limits and combined output | Use the combined figure to judge two-device performance. |
| Physical fit | Dimensions and weight from the product specification | Balance energy against what you will actually carry every day. |
| Travel suitability | Printed Wh and current airline requirements | Confirm the bank is permitted before packing it for a flight. |
Example decisions
- Emergency commute: select a compact bank whose Wh and output meet the phone’s requirements, even if it offers only one output port.
- Long day with a phone and earbuds: prioritize a clearly documented second output and a combined-output figure; the highest single-port wattage is less important than predictable sharing.
- Phone plus tablet: compare the tablet’s requirements too. A bank that is ideal for a phone may not provide the protocol, wattage or energy needed by both devices together.
- Frequent flying: choose by Wh first, then verify the airline’s current policy and carry-on requirement before purchase.
Can you take a power bank on a plane?
Under the FAA’s general U.S. passenger guidance, spare lithium-ion batteries and power banks must be carried in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. Batteries up to 100 Wh are generally allowed; those from 101 Wh through 160 Wh require airline approval. Airlines can impose stricter limits, so check the operating airline’s current rules as well as the bank’s label. See the FAA’s Airline Passengers and Batteries guidance.
Pre-flight checklist
- Read the Wh rating printed on the bank or its official specification.
- Apply the FAA’s mAh-and-voltage formula if only mAh and voltage are shown.
- Confirm that the bank is at or below the airline’s permitted threshold, or obtain approval for a 101–160 Wh unit where allowed.
- Pack the power bank in carry-on baggage.
- Check the rules for every airline on the itinerary, including connections and codeshare flights.
Do not rely on a seller’s rounded capacity claim when an airline agent may inspect the label. Keep the rating legible and use the current policy for the airline and route.
Physical size, weight and everyday handling
Capacity and power ratings do not tell you whether a bank is comfortable to carry. Compare the manufacturer’s dimensions and weight with the pocket, bag or travel pouch where it will live. A larger bank can reduce the need to recharge it, while a smaller one may be easier to keep with the phone and cable.

- Check whether the bank fits beside the phone while both are in use.
- Consider cable length and connector orientation; a port placed on an inconvenient edge can make charging awkward.
- Look for clear status indicators so you can tell whether the bank itself needs recharging.
- For travel, keep the Wh label visible and avoid selecting capacity near an airline limit unless that capacity is necessary.
The available evidence here does not establish brand reliability, charge-cycle durability, real-world efficiency or performance for any particular model. Those qualities require independent testing or manufacturer data; do not infer them from capacity, wattage or port count.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Choosing by mAh alone
Problem: two banks with the same mAh can have different Wh values, and the figure does not predict delivered phone charges. Fix: record voltage, calculate Wh and compare it with the phone’s energy needs and travel rules.
Assuming more watts means faster phone charging
Problem: the phone may support less power or a different protocol. Fix: match the phone’s manufacturer-published protocol and maximum input to the bank’s explicit output profile.
Counting connectors instead of capabilities
Problem: a port may be input-only, output-only or dual-role, and labels may hide different limits. Fix: map each port’s role and read the manual’s per-port ratings.
Expecting full speed on two ports
Problem: the bank may reduce output when multiple devices are connected. Fix: find the combined-output specification and plan for the reduced profile if necessary.
Packing a power bank in checked luggage
Problem: FAA guidance requires spare power banks in carry-on baggage. Fix: move it to carry-on luggage and verify the airline’s current Wh rules before departure.
Quick Recap
A practical purchase checklist
- Write down the phone’s maximum wired charging power and supported protocol from its manufacturer.
- Decide how much energy you need and whether you will charge one device or several.
- For each candidate, record mAh, stated voltage and Wh.
- Confirm the bank lists a compatible output protocol and profile.
- Map every port as input, output or dual-role, including the cable connector you will use.
- Read per-port and combined-output limits for simultaneous charging.
- Compare dimensions and weight with your normal carry setup.
- If flying, verify the printed Wh rating, carry-on requirement and each airline’s current restrictions.
- Buy only after every required specification is explicitly stated; treat an omitted value as unknown rather than assuming the most favorable interpretation.
