The right portable power station is the smallest, lightest model that can deliver enough watts to run your devices and enough watt-hours to run them for the required time. Start with a load list, check both continuous and surge output, then verify how the unit will recharge where you plan to use it. Home backup, camping, road travel and air travel impose very different constraints.

This guide shows how to calculate those requirements, compare specifications without being misled by capacity alone, and avoid common safety and transport mistakes.

Start with the devices you actually need to power

A power station is a battery with an inverter, charging circuits and several output ports. Two specifications determine most of its suitability:

  • Capacity (watt-hours, Wh): the energy stored in the battery and the theoretical runtime.
  • Output (watts, W): the load the inverter and ports can supply at one time.

Capacity and output are independent. A large battery can still fail if its inverter cannot start a refrigerator compressor, pump or other motor. Conversely, a high-output unit with a small battery may run a powerful appliance only briefly.

Make a load worksheet

For every device, record its running wattage, the hours it must operate, and whether it will run simultaneously with other devices. Use the rating plate or manufacturer specification. For rechargeable electronics, use the device’s watt-hour rating when available rather than guessing from the charger label.

Device Running draw (W) Required hours Energy estimate Runs with
Example lamp 60 W 8 h 60 × 8 = 480 Wh Router
Example laptop 65 W 4 h 65 × 4 = 260 Wh Phone chargers

The figures in this table are an arithmetic example, not a claim about a particular product. Add the watt-hours for devices that must operate during the same period. Leave room for inverter and charging losses, temperature, battery-management limits and the fact that a manufacturer’s stated capacity is not always fully available at the output.

Separate continuous load from startup load

List the highest combined running load, then identify appliances with motors, compressors or pumps. Their startup draw can briefly exceed the running rating. Compare that peak with the station’s stated surge or peak output, and check how long the unit can sustain it. If the specification gives no surge figure, treat that as an unresolved compatibility risk rather than assuming the appliance will start.

Choose capacity and output independently

Capacity: how long the battery lasts

Use the worksheet total to estimate the minimum stored energy. If your essential devices consume 500 Wh during an outage, a station rated at 500 Wh offers no practical margin for conversion losses or battery-protection reserve. Select additional capacity or reduce the load. A second charging opportunity during the day can also reduce the capacity you need to carry.

Manufacturers and guides publish broad ranges, but they are starting points rather than universal sizing rules. Anker SOLIX’s 2026 buying guide suggests the following general combinations:

Use described by Anker SOLIX Suggested capacity Suggested output How to interpret it
Phone and laptop charging Under 600 Wh 300–600 W Suitable only when your actual devices fit those limits.
Weekend camping 600–1,500 Wh 600–1,200 W Larger capacity extends time off-grid but adds weight and cost.
Short home power cut 1,000–2,000 Wh 1,000–1,800 W For selected essentials, not an entire home’s normal demand.
Multi-day backup with appliances 2,000 Wh or more 2,000 W or more Still depends on appliance surge and opportunities to recharge.

These are Anker SOLIX’s recommendations, published in 2026, and their UK context and commercial perspective matter. Your load list, operating conditions, conversion losses and recharge access determine the actual requirement. See the published buying guide and explanation of what to look for for the source context.

Output: what can run together

Add the running watts of all devices that may be on at once and compare that total with the station’s continuous AC output. Check each USB and DC port’s individual limit as well as the total output limit; a unit may have enough headline watts but not enough capacity on one port for a particular device. Verify socket voltage and plug type for your country, especially when comparing UK specifications with equipment intended for another region.

Match the station to the use case

Home backup during an outage

Begin by defining “essential”: perhaps a communications router, phones, lighting, medical equipment or a refrigerator, rather than every appliance in the house. Measure or obtain the running and startup requirements for those loads and decide how many hours they must operate before mains power is expected or another recharge is available.

  • Prioritize continuous and surge output before buying the largest battery.
  • Check AC recharge speed if the station must recover between outages.
  • Consider expandable batteries only when the manufacturer documents compatibility and the added weight is acceptable.
  • If you need uninterrupted operation for a computer, network device or medical equipment, examine the station’s UPS mode and published switchover behavior against that equipment’s tolerance.

A portable station does not automatically power a house. Do not connect it to fixed household wiring or a wall outlet in a way that could backfeed the grid. Supplying circuits through a transfer switch or other permanent connection requires equipment and installation appropriate to local electrical rules and a qualified professional.

Camping

For a tent, campsite or short off-grid trip, start with phones, cameras, lights, a laptop, a cooler and any cooking or medical equipment you genuinely plan to use. Direct USB-C, USB-A or 12-volt DC outputs can avoid inverter losses and reduce the need for adapters. Quiet operation may matter more at night than maximum AC output.

Every extra watt-hour adds mass and usually cost. A small station that covers the listed devices for the trip is easier to carry than a home-backup model. If you intend to recharge from a folding or roof-mounted panel, verify the station’s solar input before purchasing the panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Road trips and RV use

Road travel permits much larger batteries than air travel, but vehicle and RV electrical systems still impose limits. Confirm the station’s vehicle-input voltage, connector, maximum charging current and whether charging is allowed while driving. For an RV, check the exact receptacle, shore-power arrangement, inverter behavior and any restrictions in the vehicle’s electrical design. A station’s AC socket does not automatically satisfy an RV’s grounding, transfer or high-current requirements.

Air travel

Full-sized power stations are generally not passenger-aircraft products. The US Federal Aviation Administration’s current passenger guidance, based on US Department of Transportation rules, uses the battery’s watt-hour rating:

Battery rating FAA passenger guidance Practical implication
Up to 100 Wh Rechargeable batteries of this rating are generally allowed for personal use. Carry-on and quantity conditions still apply.
101–160 Wh Airline approval is required; the cited US guidance allows up to two spare batteries per person. Obtain approval before arriving at the airport.
Above 160 Wh Lithium battery-powered generators are forbidden on passenger aircraft. Do not plan to check or carry a typical full-sized station.

Read the FAA’s Airline Passengers and Batteries guidance, then check the exact airline, airport-security and destination-country rules. TSA, carriers and non-US authorities can be stricter. Watt-hours can be calculated as volts multiplied by amp-hours when the rating is not printed directly. Never assume that a smaller-looking station is permitted without confirming its rating and the carrier’s approval process.

Compare charging options realistically

AC charging

Look for the stated mains charging time and input wattage. A fast AC input is useful when an outage ends only briefly or when you need to turn the station around between camping days. Confirm the regional voltage and plug arrangement; a charging time quoted for one market may not apply to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vehicle charging

Check whether the station accepts a standard 12-volt vehicle outlet, a higher-voltage accessory circuit or another connector. The input limit determines how quickly it charges. A vehicle outlet may supply substantially less power than a household socket, so do not infer vehicle recharge time from AC figures.

Solar charging

Solar charging is conditional, not a guaranteed daily refill. Match the panel’s open-circuit voltage, operating-voltage range, connector and maximum wattage to the station’s published solar-input limits. Exceeding a voltage limit can damage equipment; an undersized or incompatible connector may not charge at all. Cloud, shade, panel angle, season and temperature change the available power, so avoid promising a fixed recharge time without a stated scenario.

Portable panels are a sensible secondary purchase for off-grid users only after the station’s input specification is confirmed. A panel from one manufacturer is not universally compatible with every station.

Inspect ports, portability and construction

Ports and simultaneous use

Count the outlets you will use at the same time: AC sockets, USB-C, USB-A, 12-volt DC and any vehicle-style outlet. Check USB-C power delivery ratings for laptops and other high-draw devices, DC voltage, per-port limits and the station’s total simultaneous-output limit. Also verify whether activating the inverter consumes meaningful idle energy when only USB or DC charging is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weight, dimensions and handling

Compare mass and dimensions with the route from storage to the car, campsite or room where the station will be used. Wheels and handles help with a heavy unit but do not change the need for a secure, ventilated location. A capacity increase that makes the station too heavy to move during an outage is a practical downgrade.

Battery chemistry, cycle life and storage

Compare the battery chemistry and the manufacturer’s stated cycle-life conditions, not just the cycle number. Ask at what discharge depth, temperature, charging rate and end-of-life capacity the figure was measured. Follow the specified storage charge level and temperature, and inspect the manual for long-term-storage intervals. Do not treat an unspecified cycle-life claim as directly comparable with a fully qualified test.

Weather resistance and warranty

Check the exact ingress or weather-resistance rating rather than assuming a rugged appearance means rain protection. Keep connectors covered as directed and follow the manual’s limits for wet or dusty environments. Compare warranty duration, geographic coverage and required registration, because a warranty may differ by region and product edition.

Use a real product specification as a trade-off example

TechRadar’s 2026 product guide reports the Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 at 1,070 Wh, 1,500 W continuous output and 10 kg, with AC, USB and car outputs plus solar input. Those figures illustrate how to read a specification, not what everyone should buy. The guide presents it as a camping option while noting that its weight is noticeable and that 1,500 W will not run every household appliance. Availability and specifications can change; verify the manufacturer’s current data before purchase. See the TechRadar guide for the cited product context.

Question to ask What this example tells you
Is the capacity enough? 1,070 Wh must be compared with your calculated load and practical losses.
Can it run a high-power appliance? 1,500 W continuous output is a ceiling, and startup surge may still rule out a compressor or pump.
Is it portable? 10 kg may be manageable for a car campsite but inconvenient for long carrying.
Can it recharge off-grid? Solar input is listed, but panel voltage, connector and maximum input still require checking.

A comparison checklist for any model

  1. Write the device list, running watts, hours and simultaneous-use groups.
  2. Calculate each load’s watt-hours and add margin for conversion losses and operating conditions.
  3. Compare the combined running watts with continuous AC and DC limits.
  4. Check every motor, compressor and pump against the stated surge output and duration.
  5. Confirm outlet voltage, plug type, USB/DC ratings and simultaneous-use limits.
  6. Compare AC, vehicle and solar input ratings, connectors and stated recharge times.
  7. Measure the available storage space and the carrying distance; compare weight and dimensions.
  8. Review battery chemistry, qualified cycle-life conditions, storage instructions, weather resistance, warranty and regional support.
  9. For computers or networking equipment, verify UPS mode and switchover behavior.
  10. For travel, calculate the exact battery Wh rating and check the current carrier and destination rules before buying.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Buying by watt-hours alone

Symptom: the station has plenty of capacity but shuts down when an appliance starts. Correction: compare continuous and surge output separately and include the appliance’s startup requirement.

Assuming a panel will charge any station

Symptom: a panel is connected but charging does not begin or the input limit is exceeded. Correction: match voltage range, connector polarity and maximum solar wattage to the exact station.

Using a home-backup station as house wiring

Symptom: an attempt is made to energize wall circuits through an improvised cable or outlet connection. Correction: power individual devices, or use a code-compliant transfer arrangement installed by a qualified professional.

Ignoring recharge access

Symptom: the station covers the first night but cannot recover before the battery is empty. Correction: model when AC, vehicle or solar charging will actually be available and choose capacity accordingly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Taking a large station to an airport

Symptom: the battery is refused at check-in or security. Correction: determine the exact Wh rating before travel and follow the airline’s current approval and baggage rules; units above 160 Wh fall outside the FAA passenger allowance cited above.

Make the final choice

Choose the station that satisfies your highest simultaneous running load and startup surge, stores enough energy for the required hours, and can be recharged at the locations where you will use it. Then test the decision against its weight, ports, noise, weather limits, UPS behavior and transport rules. A smaller station that matches a precise camping load is often better than a heavy home-backup model, while an outage plan may justify more capacity and faster recharge. As Anker SOLIX puts it, “The right choice should run your essential devices for long enough without becoming unnecessarily heavy, expensive or difficult to recharge.”
