The best portable charger for an iPhone depends first on the iPhone’s connector and then on how you want to charge: USB-C Power Delivery (PD) is the most dependable and usually fastest wired option, while a MagSafe- or Qi2-certified magnetic battery offers cable-free convenience on compatible models. Choose capacity, output, weight and travel compliance only after those decisions.

Identify your iPhone model, decide whether you will carry a cable, and check the charger’s actual USB-C PD or Qi2 specifications. The steps below help you make that choice without treating a battery’s advertised mAh as a guaranteed number of phone charges.

1. Identify your iPhone model and connector

Compatibility starts with the port on the phone, not the connector on the battery pack. Apple’s current charge-speed guidance distinguishes iPhone 15 models and later from earlier generations.

iPhone situation Wired cable to look for What to verify
iPhone 15 models and later USB-C to USB-C The power bank has USB-C Power Delivery output and the cable supports USB-C charging.
Earlier iPhone models with Lightning USB-C to Lightning The bank has USB-C PD output; the cable must have a Lightning connector for the phone.
Wireless charging on a compatible model No cable between bank and phone Exact model compatibility, magnetic alignment, certification and maximum wireless output.

Apple states that faster wired charging uses a USB-C Power Delivery charger and a USB-C cable for iPhone 15 models and later. For earlier iPhones, Apple’s equivalent fast-charge guidance uses a USB-C to Lightning cable. A USB-A-only bank can still charge an iPhone with the right cable, but it is not the straightforward choice when you are specifically seeking the faster USB-C PD path.

Check the model in iOS

If you are unsure which iPhone you have, open Settings › General › About and note the model name. The connector is also visible on the bottom edge: USB-C is a small, rounded port; Lightning is narrower and uses the Lightning plug. Write down the model before shopping, because “works with iPhone” on a product page does not establish the exact wireless or speed behavior for your generation.

2. Choose wired USB-C PD, magnetic wireless, or both

Charging method is a practical trade-off. Wired charging is generally easier to use while the phone is in your hand and works with more devices. Magnetic wireless charging eliminates a loose cable but can add heat, thickness and model-specific restrictions.

USB-C Power Delivery: the dependable default

A USB-C PD power bank connects to the iPhone with a cable and negotiates an appropriate power level. It is the safest default when you want predictable charging, support for several devices, or the ability to keep using the phone while it charges.

  • Look for a clearly stated USB-C PD output, not merely a USB-C-shaped port.
  • Confirm whether the USB-C port is output-only, input-only, or bidirectional. A bidirectional port can recharge the bank as well as your phone.
  • Check the included cable. iPhone 15 and later need USB-C to USB-C; Lightning iPhones need USB-C to Lightning for Apple’s faster wired guidance.
  • Compare the number of output ports if you may charge AirPods, an iPad or another phone at the same time. Multiple ports can reduce the power available to each device.

Apple notes that lower-output wired charging can take longer than expected. A bank may advertise a high total wattage while providing less through one port when another port is active, so read the single-port and multi-port figures rather than only the headline number.

MagSafe or Qi2: cable-free convenience

Magnetic charging is useful when you want to top up while walking, commuting or holding the phone without a cable dangling from it. It only works as intended when the phone and charger support compatible magnetic alignment.

Apple recommends MagSafe or Qi2-certified wireless chargers for faster wireless charging. Apple’s MagSafe Charger page describes Qi2 25W certification and magnetic alignment for compatible iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, compatible iPhone 16 models, iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air. The 25W figure applies to that charger, a supported device and an appropriate power adapter; it does not mean every magnetic battery pack can deliver 25W.

Belkin’s magnetic Qi2 power-bank catalog lists products from 2,500 to 10,000 mAh and describes up to 15W wireless output for that product family. Those are manufacturer specifications for named products, not an independent test or a guarantee that an iPhone will receive 15W throughout a charging session.

Hybrid banks: wired when speed matters, magnetic when convenience matters

A hybrid bank combines a magnetic pad with USB-C output. This is often the most flexible arrangement: use the pad for a quick cable-free top-up, then connect a cable when you need the most predictable speed or want to charge a second device. Check whether using wireless charging disables or reduces the USB-C output, and whether the magnetic surface fits your phone and case.

3. Select capacity without believing a fixed charge-count promise

Capacity is normally printed in milliamp-hours (mAh), but mAh alone does not tell you how much energy reaches an iPhone. Cell voltage, conversion losses, charging electronics, temperature, battery condition, the iPhone model and active use all affect delivered energy. No single number of “full charges” applies to every iPhone and every power bank.

Use-case guide to common sizes

Capacity range or example Usually suits Trade-off
About 2,500–5,000 mAh Emergency carry, short commutes and people who prioritize the lightest pack Less stored energy and less margin for heavy phone use.
About 10,000 mAh Long workdays, travel days and a middle-capacity everyday option More weight and thickness than a small emergency pack.
Above 10,000 mAh Multi-day trips or charging more than one device Greater bulk; air-travel Wh limits become more important.

Belkin lists magnetic examples between 2,500 and 10,000 mAh, including a 10,000 mAh Qi2 model specified at 38.7 Wh. Treat those figures as product specifications, not as a promise of a particular number of iPhone recharges.

Convert mAh to watt-hours for energy and travel decisions

Watt-hours (Wh) express stored energy more usefully than mAh when comparing batteries. The Federal Aviation Administration’s conversion guidance is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × voltage

Use the nominal voltage printed by the manufacturer. For example, a 10,000 mAh bank specified at 3.87V is 38.7 Wh. A nominal-voltage value is not interchangeable with the phone’s battery voltage, and two banks with the same mAh can have different Wh ratings if their stated voltages differ.

Decide how much weight you will actually carry

Before selecting a larger bank, estimate your routine:

  • How many hours will you be away from an outlet?
  • Will navigation, video, hotspot use or photography keep the iPhone active while charging?
  • Will the same bank charge earbuds, a tablet or another phone?
  • Are you willing to carry a thicker pack attached to the phone, or would a cable-connected pack in a bag be more comfortable?

A small bank that is always in your bag can be more useful than a larger one left at home. Conversely, a 5,000 mAh magnetic pack may be insufficient for a long day of intensive use, even though it is convenient.

4. Compare output, ports and cables

Read the electrical specifications rather than relying on a product name such as “fast charger.” Your checklist should include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • USB-C PD wattage: the output available from the USB-C port when it is the only active output.
  • Shared-output behavior: the wattage available when two or more devices are connected.
  • Wireless wattage: the maximum Qi2 or MagSafe-compatible output, plus any conditions attached to that figure.
  • Input rating: how quickly the bank itself can be refilled.
  • Port count: useful for several devices, but additional ports can add size and divide available power.
  • Cable requirement: whether a suitable cable is included and whether it is USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to Lightning.
  • Physical design: thickness, weight, button placement, status display and whether the pack blocks the phone’s camera or buttons.

Do not confuse the bank’s input rating with its output rating. A pack might accept high-wattage input for faster recharging while offering a different output profile to the iPhone. Both figures matter if you want short turnaround between uses.

5. Evaluate magnetic charging more carefully

Certification matters

A magnet can hold a battery against a phone without proving that the product follows the charging behavior you expect. Look for the relevant MagSafe or Qi2 certification and a stated wireless-output limit. Apple identifies MagSafe and Qi2-certified chargers as the faster wireless route; a generic magnetic attachment may charge more slowly or behave differently.

Check exact iPhone compatibility

Magnetic alignment depends on the iPhone model. A phone can support wireless charging without having the magnetic alignment needed for a magnetic battery to stay centered. Product compatibility lists may also distinguish between models and case use. Verify the exact model rather than assuming that every iPhone with a similar size is interchangeable.

Account for cases, heat and handling

  • A thick, non-magnetic case can weaken or prevent alignment. Use a case designed for the charging system if you need the pack to remain attached.
  • Wireless charging creates more heat than a direct cable connection in many situations. Heat, direct sunlight and intensive use can reduce charging speed.
  • A magnetic pack adds weight to the back of the phone. It may be comfortable for short top-ups but awkward for extended one-handed use.
  • Remove cards, metal plates and other magnetic accessories that can interfere with alignment or charging.

Wireless output is a maximum, not a constant. The phone may reduce power as its battery fills or as temperature rises, so compare the convenience you gain with the speed you actually need.

6. Check airline requirements before flying

For flights in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration says spare lithium batteries, including power banks, must be carried in carry-on baggage and may not be placed in checked luggage.

Battery rating FAA passenger guidance What to do
Up to 100 Wh Generally allowed as a spare lithium-ion battery Carry it in the cabin and protect it from damage or short circuits.
101–160 Wh Requires airline approval and is subject to quantity limits Ask the operating airline before travel; approval is not automatic.
Over 160 Wh Not generally permitted for passenger carriage Do not assume it can travel with you; check the airline and applicable rules.

Airlines and international authorities can impose stricter limits than the general FAA guidance. Check the operating carrier, connecting airports and destination-country rules before departure. Keep the Wh rating visible on the label or documentation; if it is not printed, use the manufacturer’s stated mAh and nominal voltage with the FAA formula.

Practical flight checklist

  1. Confirm the power bank’s Wh rating, not just its mAh number.
  2. Pack the bank in your personal item or carry-on, never in checked baggage.
  3. Protect exposed ports and prevent the terminals from contacting metal objects.
  4. Ask the airline about approval if the rating is 101–160 Wh.
  5. Follow crew instructions if the airline restricts use or storage during the flight.

7. A step-by-step buying process

  1. Record the iPhone model and connector. Use Settings › General › About, then confirm whether the phone has USB-C or Lightning.
  2. Choose the primary charging method. Select USB-C PD for dependable wired charging, Qi2 or MagSafe for cable-free charging, or a hybrid if you need both.
  3. Set a realistic capacity target. Choose a smaller pack for occasional emergencies, around 10,000 mAh for a general middle ground, or a larger bank for multiple devices and extended trips.
  4. Read the output table. Verify USB-C PD output, wireless wattage, shared-port limits and whether the bank can charge while it is being recharged.
  5. Match the cable and case. Buy or confirm the correct USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to Lightning cable. For magnetic charging, verify case compatibility.
  6. Check size and ergonomics. Compare weight, thickness, grip, camera clearance and whether the bank fits your bag or pocket.
  7. Calculate Wh for travel. Use the printed Wh value or the mAh-times-voltage formula, then compare it with airline limits.
  8. Recheck the manufacturer’s current specifications. Product capacities, wireless standards, included cables and airline policies can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

8. Match the charger to common situations

Everyday emergency carry

Prioritize low weight and a compact shape. A small-capacity pack is appropriate when you usually need only a short top-up to reach an outlet. USB-C PD is preferable if you want to charge while continuing to use the phone; magnetic wireless is attractive if avoiding a cable matters more than maximum efficiency.

Long workdays and commuting

An approximately 10,000 mAh bank offers a practical middle-capacity search target. Choose USB-C PD if you use navigation, calls or hotspot features while charging. A magnetic Qi2 model can be convenient for short, cable-free boosts, provided the phone and case align correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Travel with several devices

Choose a larger-capacity bank with enough output ports for your phone and accessories, but check its Wh rating before flying. Confirm how output is divided when several devices are connected. A high mAh figure is useful only if the additional weight and airline constraints fit your itinerary.

Charging in a vehicle or while walking

Magnetic alignment can make short top-ups easier when the phone must remain accessible. For sustained charging, a cable-connected USB-C PD bank is usually easier to place in a bag or console and less likely to add weight directly to the handset.

9. Common mistakes and fixes

Buying by mAh alone

Problem: You expect a fixed number of full iPhone charges from the label. Fix: Compare Wh, weight and the manufacturer’s stated voltage, and treat every charge-count estimate as model- and condition-dependent.

Assuming every USB-C port supports PD

Problem: The connector fits, but charging is slower than expected. Fix: Look for an explicit USB-C PD output specification and confirm the cable supports the phone’s connector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every magnetic pack is MagSafe or Qi2

Problem: The pack sticks to the phone but charges slowly, disconnects or will not align through the case. Fix: Verify certification, exact iPhone compatibility, wireless wattage and case requirements.

Using a large bank in checked luggage

Problem: The power bank is refused at the airport or removed from checked baggage. Fix: Keep all spare lithium batteries in carry-on baggage and check Wh and airline approval requirements in advance.

Ignoring heat and simultaneous use

Problem: Charging slows when the phone is hot or another device is connected. Fix: Move the setup out of direct sun, reduce intensive phone use, and read the bank’s shared-output limits.

10. Final specification checklist

Before ordering, confirm every item below on the current product listing or packaging:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compatible iPhone generation and connector.
  • USB-C PD output wattage, if wired charging is required.
  • Qi2 or MagSafe certification and maximum wireless output, if using magnetic charging.
  • Capacity in mAh and, preferably, a stated Wh rating.
  • Nominal voltage if you need to calculate Wh.
  • Input speed for recharging the power bank.
  • Output available when more than one device is connected.
  • Included cable type, or the exact cable you must supply.
  • Weight, thickness, camera clearance and case compatibility.
  • Carry-on suitability and airline approval requirements for your route.

If you want the least uncertainty, choose a USB-C PD bank matched to your iPhone’s connector and carry the correct cable. Choose a certified Qi2 or MagSafe-compatible magnetic bank when cable-free alignment is the priority, and select capacity only after deciding how much weight and travel restriction you will accept.
