If you want to play physical game discs or supported Blu-ray media, choose a PS5 configuration with a disc drive. If you buy games digitally and do not need disc playback, the Digital Edition is the straightforward fit. PS5 Pro is optional: PlayStation lists GTA VI as PS5 Pro Enhanced, but its published material does not quantify a performance advantage or say Pro is required. A GTA VI hardware bundle has not been verified; check current listings in your region before buying.
Which PS5 versions can play GTA VI?
PlayStation lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 and identifies it as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Its US game page schedules release for November 19, 2026, and says the game will not be available for PS4. In other words, a PS4 is not an alternative if GTA VI is your reason for buying a console. If you are shopping ahead of launch, make sure the product listing is for a PS5-family console rather than assuming an older PlayStation will support the game.
PlayStation describes GTA VI as a single-player game and lists platform features including 3D audio, SSD loading, and DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, and controller speaker functionality. Those are PlayStation’s feature descriptions, not independent performance tests or a guarantee that every feature will affect every moment of play. They describe the planned PS5 experience; they do not distinguish the standard PS5 from PS5 Pro in a quantified way.

Sony Interactive Entertainment marketing executive Mary Yee said GTA VI “will play best on PS5” by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features. That is Sony’s stated marketing position about the PS5 experience. It is not an independent comparison of console configurations, nor does it show that you need a Pro model to play the game.

Disc or Digital: choose based on what you want to use
Choose a PS5 with a disc drive if physical media matters
A disc-drive PS5 can play PS5 game discs and supported Blu-ray and DVD media, according to Sony’s manual for the CFI-21XX model family. This is the sensible choice if you want the option of buying games on disc or using supported video discs. The drive’s presence is the practical difference that matters here; the available information does not establish that GTA VI itself will be sold physically.
Choosing a disc-drive console is about keeping physical-media options open, not a promise that a particular game will have a disc version or that every disc format will work. Sony’s manual describes PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs and supported Blu-ray/DVD formats for consoles with a disc drive installed. If a specific movie or disc format matters to you, check the manual and playback support for the exact console and media type rather than assuming every optical disc is supported.
Check the exact console model and drive configuration on the box or product listing. Do not assume that every console described casually as a “Digital Edition” can later be upgraded: the material reviewed does not establish an add-on drive configuration or compatibility for every Digital Edition model. If you are considering an add-on drive as a way to save money now and add physical media later, verify that the exact SKU supports it and that the compatible drive is available before you buy.

The Digital Edition suits buyers who download games and do not need disc playback. Before checkout, verify the SKU and the exact configuration rather than relying on a retailer’s shortened product title. If physical game discs or supported Blu-ray playback are important to you, a digital-only configuration will not meet that need.
Think about the household’s existing collection as well as future purchases. If you already own disc-based PS5 games or regularly borrow, buy, or receive games on disc, a disc-drive model preserves that option. If you have no plans to use game or video discs, Digital Edition avoids paying for a feature you do not need. The sources do not provide a current local console-price difference, so compare the actual listings available to you rather than assuming how much the drive changes the price.
Digital purchases depend on using the PlayStation Store and downloading the game to the console. Make sure digital buying suits your usual payment and account habits, and check your internet access and storage plans. These are practical ownership considerations; the official game listing does not set out a separate internet-speed requirement for choosing between the two PS5 configurations.
Compare the documented storage figures carefully
Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists 1 TB of storage for the standard PS5 and 825 GB for the Digital Edition. These are specifications for the model family covered by that manual, not universal figures for every PS5 generation or SKU; Sony also notes that specifications can change. Check the capacity listed for the specific console you are considering. The available figures do not establish how much storage remains available for games after system software and other uses.

| Configuration in Sony’s CFI-21XX manual | Disc playback | Listed storage | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard PS5 with disc drive installed | PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs and supported Blu-ray/DVD formats | 1 TB | Buyers who want physical-disc and supported video-disc playback |
| PS5 Digital Edition | Disc playback is not listed for the Digital Edition in the manual’s disc-drive section | 825 GB | Buyers who purchase digitally and do not need disc playback |
The storage and disc details above apply specifically to the CFI-21XX manual. Confirm the model number and current specifications for the console sold in your region. The figures are total listed capacities, not a guarantee of how many games will fit, because the game installation size is not established in the cited product information.
Do not choose a disc model solely because the manual lists a larger capacity for this particular model family. Storage and drive are separate decision points: first choose whether physical-media playback matters, then compare the capacity and other specifications on the exact products you can buy. A later model or a different regional SKU may have different specifications.
A quick decision guide
Use the following questions to narrow the choice before comparing retailer prices:
- Will you use game discs or supported video discs? If yes, choose a console configuration with a disc drive installed. If no, Digital Edition may suit your buying habits.
- Are you relying on a physical GTA VI copy? The PlayStation listing described here does not establish that GTA VI will be sold physically. Choose a drive for your broader media needs, not on an assumption about the game’s release format.
- Are you considering PS5 Pro specifically for GTA VI? It is supported and carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced designation, but PlayStation’s published pages do not quantify a game-specific advantage or say it is required.
- Does a listing say bundle? Check whether it actually includes both a console and the game. A digital game edition is software, not a hardware package.
- Have you checked the exact SKU and local terms? Confirm drive configuration, storage, price, stock, region, and any offer conditions on the current listing.
If the answers are “I want discs,” “I do not need Pro,” and “there is no verified bundle I am relying on,” the practical starting point is a standard PS5 with a disc drive. If you buy digitally and do not need disc playback, start with Digital Edition instead. This is a use-case recommendation, not a claim that either model delivers a different GTA VI performance level.
Is PS5 Pro necessary for GTA VI?
No PlayStation listing says GTA VI requires PS5 Pro. PlayStation labels the game “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” so the Pro is supported, but the published PlayStation pages do not give a game-specific comparison of standard PS5 and PS5 Pro resolution, frame rate, or visual settings. That label alone is not a quantified promise of a particular improvement.
Consider Pro only if its potential appeal to you justifies the price of the specific console listing you find. The available GTA VI information is not enough to calculate a value premium or say how much better the game will look or run on Pro. If your choice is between spending more for Pro and buying a standard PS5, make that decision with the limits of the published game-specific information in mind—not on an assumed frame-rate or resolution figure.
In other words, decide on Pro as an optional premium-console choice, not as a GTA VI requirement. If you want to compare actual console prices, check current local listings; no fixed Pro surcharge is established here. The game page’s enhanced label confirms the designation PlayStation uses, but it does not tell a buyer how many frames per second to expect or which graphics settings will differ.

For a straightforward GTA VI purchase, the disc-drive question is more concrete: the drive enables physical game discs and supported Blu-ray/DVD media on the documented configuration. Pro’s game-specific benefit, by contrast, is not quantified in the official material described here. Avoid paying extra solely because you expect an unlisted technical improvement.

Distinguish a game edition from a hardware bundle. As accessed October 9, 2026, the US PlayStation Store page lists digital Standard and Ultimate editions of GTA VI. Those are software editions, not a PS5 console packaged with the game. The PlayStation Blog says PS5 and PS5 Pro are sold through direct.playstation.com where available and local retailers, but the reviewed official material does not announce a GTA VI hardware bundle.
That does not establish that a bundle will never be offered. Bundle announcements and retailer stock can change, so check the current PlayStation and retailer listings in your country. A listing that uses the word “bundle” should clearly identify both the console model and the included game; confirm whether it is hardware plus software rather than a game edition or a console listing paired with a separate purchase.
Before paying a bundle price, compare what is actually included with the price of the console and game listed separately. Confirm whether the game is a digital code or another form of entitlement, which console configuration is included, and whether any advertised extras have separate terms. No specific GTA VI console package or bundle price is verified here, so do not treat a product title alone as proof of an official hardware bundle.
If a package appears after the date of the cited storefront information, its status and contents should be checked on the live PlayStation page or retailer page. Look for the included console model, drive configuration, included game edition, region, and redemption restrictions. Do not assume a bundle includes the more expensive software edition, a disc copy, or a subscription unless the terms say so.

What do the listed GTA VI game editions cost?
The prices below are digital software prices on the US PlayStation Store as accessed October 9, 2026—not prices for a PS5 console or a hardware bundle. Store prices and availability may change.
| Digital edition | US listed price | Listed contents |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $79.99 | Grand Theft Auto VI, Vintage Vice City Pack, one month of GTA+, and seven-day preload |
| Ultimate Edition | $99.99 | Standard Edition listed contents plus the Ultimate Edition Upgrade |
The listed offer says eligible players who purchase a digital Standard or Ultimate Edition before November 20, 2026 can claim one month of GTA+. Redemption must be completed by March 31, 2027. The subscription auto-renews unless canceled, the offer is limited to one claim per account, and certain country stores are excluded. The page contains slightly different timing language in its offer copy, so check the live terms for your local store and confirm eligibility before relying on the offer.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Those prices do not tell you which console to buy. They are prices for two digital game editions, and the $20 difference is between the listed software editions, not between PS5 hardware models. The Ultimate Edition is described as adding the Ultimate Edition Upgrade to the listed contents; do not assume that it includes a console, a physical disc, or a specific hardware accessory.
The one-month GTA+ promotion is also not the same thing as a permanently included subscription. The listed terms say it auto-renews unless canceled, and eligibility is limited to one claim per account. If you decide to claim it, note both dates: the purchase deadline listed is before November 20, 2026, and the redemption deadline is March 31, 2027. Because the page’s offer copy has slightly different timing language and excludes some country stores, rely on the current local store terms rather than treating the US description as universal.
A practical checklist before you buy
- Confirm the game platform. The PlayStation listing is for PS5 and PS5 Pro, with release scheduled for November 19, 2026; it says GTA VI will not be playable on PS4.
- Decide whether you need a disc drive. If you want physical PS5 game discs or supported Blu-ray/DVD playback, select a model with the drive installed. If you buy digitally and do not need disc playback, consider the Digital Edition.
- Verify the exact SKU and specifications. Check the model number, drive configuration, and listed storage on the actual local product page or packaging. The CFI-21XX manual’s 1 TB and 825 GB figures are model-family-specific.
- Decide whether Pro’s premium makes sense to you. It is supported and marked PS5 Pro Enhanced, but the cited material does not quantify a GTA VI performance difference or make Pro a requirement.
- Check what a “bundle” includes. Verify that the package contains a console and the game, rather than mistaking a digital game edition for a hardware package. The official pages reviewed do not confirm a GTA VI hardware bundle.
- Check regional price and offer terms. The $79.99 and $99.99 game prices are US storefront prices observed October 9, 2026; local prices, availability, and offer eligibility may differ or change.
- Check the return and redemption details. If the purchase includes a digital entitlement or promotional subscription, read the seller’s and PlayStation’s terms for your region before relying on an offer. The GTA+ promotion has account, country, auto-renewal, and deadline conditions.
When you compare listings, match like with like. A digital-only console and a disc-drive console are not interchangeable if you plan to use discs, and a game-only listing is not equivalent to a console-and-game package. A price comparison is useful only after you confirm the console version, storage listed, game edition, and any offer included in each product.

Mary Yee, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: “Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.” This is Sony’s marketing position about the PS5 experience, not an independent comparative test of standard PS5 against PS5 Pro.
For the purchase decision, the strongest concrete distinction is still the disc drive: choose the configuration that matches your media habits. The Pro designation confirms support, but the published information does not provide measured game-specific gains. Likewise, the digital game editions and their listed extras do not confirm a console bundle.
The official information cited here identifies a release date, supported platform family, Pro Enhanced designation, feature descriptions, model-specific hardware specifications, and US digital game prices. It does not establish a physical GTA VI release, universal Digital Edition drive-upgrade compatibility, a specific Pro frame-rate or resolution, or a GTA VI hardware bundle. Keeping those limits in view helps avoid making a console decision on details that have not been stated.
