The right tokenized-commodity platform is the one whose legal claim, reserve evidence, redemption process, total route cost and jurisdictional access you can verify—not the one with the most attractive token price or marketing language. Start by reading the token-specific agreement, then confirm what is held, who controls it, how you can exit, and what every step costs.
What tokenized commodity investing actually is
A tokenized commodity is a blockchain-based unit linked by contract to a commodity or commodity claim. The token may represent direct ownership, fractional beneficial ownership, a redemption right, a debt claim, or another contractual interest. “Backed” is therefore not a complete description. Two tokens that each track one ounce of gold can give holders very different rights against the issuer, custodian and reserves.
Tokenization can make transfer, settlement and fractional exposure easier, but it also adds technology, custody, legal and operational dependencies. The blockchain record does not by itself prove that metal, grain or another commodity exists, is allocated to token holders, or can be delivered to you. Those facts come from the issuer agreement, reserve reports, custody arrangements and redemption rules.
The examples below are mainly tokenized gold because current primary documents provide the clearest evidence for PAXG and XAUt. A Federal Reserve Board staff paper also describes a grain-token pilot in Argentina, showing that tokenization has been applied beyond gold; it does not establish a currently available, US-retail-ready multi-commodity marketplace.

The six checks that should decide your platform
1. Identify the legal claim
Read the exact agreement for the token you would buy. Look for the defined legal interest, not just a product summary. Ask:
- Does one token represent a specified quantity of a commodity, a fraction of a particular bar, a pool interest, or an unsecured promise?
- Are holders owners, beneficial owners, creditors, beneficiaries or merely entitled to a cash payment?
- What happens if the issuer becomes insolvent?
- Can the issuer freeze, cancel or seize tokens under legal or contractual conditions?
- Which law, court and dispute process apply?
Paxos’s PAX Gold Terms and Conditions state that one PAXG token corresponds to one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold and represents fractional beneficial ownership of allocated gold held on a segregated basis in LBMA-approved carrier vaults. The same terms govern eligibility, custody, transfers, withdrawal and circumstances in which tokens may be frozen or seized. Treat those rights as contractual terms for PAXG, not as a template for every token.
Tether Gold’s Gold Token Terms of Sale and Service describe a conditional right for verified customers to redeem the underlying fine troy ounces. The terms incorporate a fee schedule and impose conditions such as a minimum redemption size. They should be read independently from PAXG’s agreement.
2. Verify what is in reserve
Determine whether reserves are allocated to specific holders, pooled, segregated from the issuer’s own assets, or merely represented by a general obligation. Check:
- The commodity specification, purity and unit of account.
- Vault locations and the legal entity that owns or controls the inventory.
- Whether the assets are allocated or unallocated.
- How often an independent attestation or audit is published.
- Whether reports reconcile outstanding tokens with reserve quantities.
- How a holder can inspect or obtain allocation information.
Paxos’s product overview at Pax Gold (PAXG) says gold is held in LBMA vaults, identifies Paxos as an OCC-regulated trust company and custodian, and says monthly attestation reports are available. These are issuer statements. Use the current reports and the legal terms to verify scope, date, methodology and any qualifications; a marketing page is not a substitute for the underlying evidence.
An attestation is also not the same as insurance against every loss, a guarantee of immediate delivery or protection from a token-price discount. It addresses only what the report tested and the period it covers.

3. Check the issuer, custodian and oversight
Write down the exact legal entities involved: token issuer, reserve custodian, vault operator, platform operator and any exchange. Then verify their jurisdictions, licenses and contractual roles in primary documents. A regulator’s oversight may constrain an entity’s activities, but it does not remove market, technology, counterparty, sanctions, insolvency or redemption risk.

For XAUt, the Tether terms state that Tether Gold has authorization in El Salvador as a stablecoin issuer and digital-assets service provider under local regulations. That is a narrow contractual statement; it is not evidence of US regulatory approval or US retail availability.
4. Test redemption before you buy
“Redeemable for physical metal” can describe a process that is impractical for a small holder. Confirm all of the following in the live terms:
- Minimum token or ounce amount.
- Identity verification and source-of-funds checks.
- Available destinations and whether delivery is domestic or international.
- Bar sizes, fabrication rules and whether fractional bars can be delivered.
- Redemption, conversion, shipping, insurance, customs and tax charges.
- Settlement time, cut-off times and circumstances allowing refusal.
- Whether the alternative is cash settlement or transfer to another account.
The one-ounce denomination of PAXG does not mean that a customer can automatically receive one one-ounce bar. A 2023 Federal Reserve staff paper describes the physical-redemption arrangement it reviewed as full-bar redemption, with bar sizes of roughly 370–430 fine troy ounces. That is historical context, not a promise about current delivery. The current Paxos agreement and fee schedule control, and a buyer should obtain written confirmation of the presently available route.
Tether Gold’s terms likewise make physical delivery conditional on a minimum redemption size, verification and fees under the schedule in effect when you redeem. The official fee page should be checked immediately before placing an order because the amounts were not readable in the reviewed material and may change.
5. Calculate the cost of your actual route
Compare the path you will really use, not a headline fee. A complete estimate includes:

- Buy-side spread between the quoted price and the commodity reference price.
- Issuer creation or minting fee, if buying directly from the issuer.
- Exchange order-book trading fee, if buying on a venue.
- Blockchain network fee for deposits, withdrawals or transfers.
- Issuer redemption or destruction fee.
- In-kind conversion fee when changing token form or ownership route.
- Physical delivery, insurance, customs and local taxes.
- Any account, custody or inactivity charge.
Issuer account fees and exchange trading fees are different. Paxos states that its account creation and destruction fees do not apply to exchange order-book transactions; an exchange can charge its own trading fee and spread instead. A platform advertising no storage fee can still be expensive to enter or exit.
6. Confirm access, network and liquidity
Before funding an account, confirm that you are eligible in your country and that the platform supports the network you intend to use. Check:
- Resident-country restrictions and whether the product is available to retail customers.
- Accepted identity documents and verification time.
- Supported blockchain and token contract address.
- Whether external-wallet withdrawals are enabled for your account.
- Deposit and withdrawal minimums.
- Trading pairs, order-book depth and spread at your intended size.
- Who holds the private keys: you, the platform or a third-party custodian.
- What happens if the network is congested, suspended or changed.
Paxos describes PAXG as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and says its terms allow trading, Paxos custody and withdrawal. Its product page says the European Union is currently unavailable; availability is jurisdiction- and date-sensitive, so recheck the live page at Pax Gold (PAXG) before relying on that statement. No current US-retail exchange route for either PAXG or XAUt is established here; verify any venue’s own listing, withdrawal, fee and eligibility pages.

The following table separates what current issuer documents state from what remains a decision you must verify. It is not a performance ranking.

PAXG fees and how to model them
Paxos’s fee page, checked October 13, 2026, says it charges no gold storage fee. That does not make ownership cost-free. The same page says creation fees are waived through January 1, 2027. After that date, the listed creation charge is a flat 0.02 PAXG for amounts below two ounces, followed by percentage bands: 1.000% for two to 25 ounces, declining to 0.125% above 800 ounces.
For redemptions effective September 1, 2026, Paxos lists marginal tiers based on rolling 30-day net redemption: 0.125% for the first $2 million, 0.250% for $2 million to $10 million, 0.350% for $10 million to $20 million, and 0.500% above $20 million. It also lists a 0.05% in-kind conversion fee effective September 1, 2026.

These are volatile issuer terms, not a permanent price list. Before transacting, open PAX Gold Fees and verify the effective date, currency basis, minimums and whether your route is direct issuance, redemption or exchange trading. Add Ethereum network costs and any venue spread or trading charge to the issuer amount.
What XAUt buyers must verify
Start with Tether Gold’s Gold Token Terms of Sale and Service, then open the incorporated Gold Token Fee Schedule. Confirm the minimum redemption size, verification requirements, accepted delivery locations, payment method, delivery timetable and all charges that apply on the date of your request.
Do not fill missing numbers with estimates from an old article or a third-party exchange. The reviewed fee page did not expose readable current amounts, and no US-retail route was established. If the live terms do not clearly answer a material question, treat that uncertainty as a platform-selection risk and ask the issuer for written clarification.
A step-by-step platform selection process
- Define the exposure. Decide whether you want physical redemption, price exposure, transferability, self-custody or collateral utility. A platform optimized for trading may be unsuitable for delivery.
- Download the primary documents. Save the token agreement, fee schedule, reserve or attestation reports, privacy policy and withdrawal rules. Record document dates.
- Map the legal chain. List issuer, custodian, vault, platform and exchange entities, with their jurisdictions and stated oversight.
- Trace one token. Follow the wording from token unit to reserve asset, including whether the asset is allocated, segregated and available to that holder.
- Run a redemption calculation. Use your intended amount and include minimum-size restrictions, conversion, delivery, insurance, network and tax costs.
- Check an exit without assumptions. Confirm that you can withdraw to your own wallet or redeem through a route available in your country. Verify whether a venue pauses withdrawals or supports only a different network.
- Measure liquidity at your order size. Review the spread and depth for the actual amount you would buy or sell. A low posted fee can be overwhelmed by slippage.
- Test support and recovery. Ask how lost access, an incorrect network transfer, a frozen account or a legal hold is handled. Keep transaction records and the applicable agreement.
- Recheck immediately before funding. Eligibility, fees, supported networks and redemption conditions can change. A saved screenshot is not a current contract.
Operational and legal risks to price into the decision
Reserve and custody risk
Even when an issuer publishes attestations, the report has a scope, date and methodology. It may not cover future token issuance, intraday movements, insurance exclusions or the enforceability of your claim in insolvency. Segregation language is valuable, but the governing law and court process determine how it works in practice.
Redemption and liquidity risk
Redemption can be suspended or refused under contractual, legal, sanctions or verification conditions. A token can trade below the implied commodity value when the issuer route is closed, the market is thin or holders cannot meet the delivery minimum. Exchange liquidity is not the same as an issuer’s obligation to redeem.

Sending an ERC-20 token to an unsupported network or address can permanently destroy access. Smart-contract bugs, compromised keys, congestion, chain reorganizations and platform withdrawal pauses are separate from the metal’s physical risk. Use the exact contract address and network shown by the issuer or venue, and begin with a small test transfer where permitted.

Regulatory and jurisdiction risk
A product available in one country may be unavailable, restricted or taxable in another. A statement that an issuer is authorized in a particular jurisdiction does not establish authorization where you live. Check local rules on digital assets, commodities, custody, reporting and cross-border delivery before purchasing.
Market and pricing risk
Token prices can diverge from a commodity reference price because of spreads, trading hours, liquidity, fees, network disruption and redemption constraints. None of the documents cited here establishes future investment performance. This guide is a platform-selection framework, not personalized financial advice.
Tokenized commodities beyond gold
The Federal Reserve Board’s 2023 staff paper, “Tokenization: Overview and Financial Stability Implications,” describes a grain-token pilot launched in Argentina in March 2022 through a Santander–Agrotoken joint venture. The design linked commodity claims and transaction/redemption infrastructure with potential acceptance as loan collateral.
That example demonstrates a possible use of tokenization for agricultural commodities, where storage, grading, transport, insurance and title transfer can be more complex than for vaulted metal. It does not prove that the pilot remains open to retail investors, that it serves US residents or that its legal treatment matches PAXG or XAUt. For any non-gold project, repeat the six checks rather than transferring assumptions from gold.
Questions to ask before pressing Buy
- What exact right does my token convey if the issuer fails?
- Which specific assets back the outstanding supply, and how current is the independent evidence?
- Can I see allocation information or only a general reserve statement?
- What is the smallest practical physical redemption, and where can it be delivered?
- What fees apply to my precise creation, transfer, conversion and exit route?
- Which fees belong to the issuer and which belong to the exchange?
- Can I withdraw to a wallet I control on the supported network?
- Is the product legal and available to a resident of my country today?
- What events allow freezes, seizure, redemption refusal or service suspension?
- What records will I need for tax, accounting or dispute purposes?
Bottom line for choosing a platform
Choose the platform whose legal documents let you explain, in plain language, what you own, where the reserve is, how you can redeem, and what the complete round-trip cost will be. PAXG provides unusually specific published terms for fractional beneficial ownership of segregated allocated gold, but its practical delivery constraints, jurisdiction limits and changing fees still require current verification. XAUt offers documented conditional physical redemption, yet its minimums, fees, access and legal treatment must be checked in the live Tether documents rather than inferred from another token. No single platform is established by the available evidence as a universal winner.
