Choose Adaptive if your phone offers it and you want smoother scrolling without holding the display at its highest rate all the time. Choose Standard or 60 Hz when battery endurance matters more, or when you do not notice a meaningful difference. The exact choices and their behavior depend on your phone, software, resolution, and apps.
What a phone refresh rate changes
Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how many times per second a display can update its image. A higher rate can make scrolling, animations, and other motion look smoother, particularly when an app can supply frames quickly enough to use it. The maximum rate and the benefit you notice depend on the phone and what you are doing. Samsung explains refresh-rate options and their effects on Galaxy phones.
Compare the refresh-rate choices

Those labels describe Samsung Galaxy options; other manufacturers may use different names or implement adaptive behavior differently. Samsung’s stated battery tradeoffs are product guidance, not a universal measurement of runtime. Samsung’s guidance does not establish a general number of minutes or percentage of battery saved by switching modes.

How to choose for your priorities
Start with Adaptive for a balance
If Adaptive is available, try it first if you value smooth scrolling but do not want a fixed high rate. On supported devices, adaptive behavior can raise the rate for touch or animation and reduce it when high refresh is less useful. The exact response depends on the phone and app.

Choose Standard when endurance matters most
Select Standard or 60 Hz if you want to prioritize battery life, or if you cannot see enough improvement at a higher rate to justify its extra power use. This is the explicit tradeoff Samsung gives for its supported Galaxy setting; it should not be read as a quantified guarantee for every phone.
Choose fixed High for consistently smooth motion
Use a fixed high setting if you prefer the display to remain at a high rate and accept increased power use. It may not be available at every resolution or in every app, and the phone’s advertised maximum does not mean every activity will run at that rate.

Change the setting and check what is available
- Open Settings and look under Display for a refresh-rate control. On Galaxy phones, Samsung calls it Motion smoothness; menu paths vary, so you can also search Settings for that label. See Samsung’s current Galaxy instructions.
- Choose Adaptive, Standard, or the available equivalent, then use the phone normally and decide whether the difference in motion matters to you.
- If the option you expect is missing or unavailable, check the exact model’s specifications and current software, then review the selected screen resolution, power-saving state, and app. On some Galaxy devices, WQHD+ resolution can constrain the refresh-rate choice, Power saving mode switches the screen to Standard, and app support varies. Samsung notes that 120 Hz is available only on select models. Samsung’s additional Galaxy instructions may show different menus or model coverage because that page was last updated on April 11, 2022.
Why Adaptive does not mean “maximum all the time”
Android’s adaptive refresh-rate design can match display updates to content cadence, with changes in response to touch, animations, app frame-rate requests, or a scrolling gesture slowing down. Android Developers says adaptive refresh support requires compatible hardware abstraction layer support and Android 15 QPR1 or later; that platform capability does not guarantee the same behavior on every Android phone or app. Some custom scrolling implementations may not receive the expected adaptive behavior. The Android Open Source Project describes Android 15 adaptive refresh as using discrete VSync steps to adapt display refresh to content frame rate. Device makers implement the feature and choose its power tradeoffs, so support and results depend on both software and hardware. The AOSP overview describes those implementation requirements.

Apple’s developer search-result documentation describes ProMotion as dynamically changing from 10 Hz to 120 Hz on supported iPhone devices, but the full page could not be inspected. Treat that range as context for supported devices, not as a specification for every iPhone or a promise of battery savings. Apple’s ProMotion documentation is the relevant developer reference.

A lower fixed rate or adaptive mode can reduce display power use in suitable circumstances, but the official guidance cited here does not establish a universal runtime improvement. Do not expect a specific percentage or number of extra hours from changing this setting: actual battery use depends on the phone, display, software, apps, and activity. If endurance is your main goal, Standard/60 Hz is the clearest setting to try; if the smoother motion is worth the tradeoff, use Adaptive or fixed High according to your preference.
