Do not judge a “free” phone by the phone price alone. Most carrier phone promotions reduce the device cost with monthly bill credits that depend on keeping a qualifying line, plan and installment agreement for a stated term. Before accepting, obtain the promotion’s written terms and compare the complete cost—including service, taxes, fees, trade-in value, upfront charges and the cost of leaving early—with buying an unlocked phone and choosing service separately.
What a carrier-discounted phone actually costs
A carrier promotion usually combines two contracts: a device-financing agreement and a wireless-service plan. You may pay the phone in monthly installments while the carrier applies a separate promotional credit to your bill. The credit can make the net device payment zero, but it does not make the required service free.
Promotions commonly run for 24 or 36 months, although the exact duration is offer-specific. The Federal Communications Commission documented historical examples of both terms in 2022; a current offer can use different timing, credit amounts or eligibility rules. Treat the written offer and device agreement as the controlling documents.

|---|---|
| Device price | The phone’s full price before credits, not just the advertised “free” or discounted amount. |
| Installment payment | Monthly amount, number of payments, down payment and whether taxes are collected up front. |
| Promotional credit | Credit per month, start date, number of credits and whether a delayed first credit is allowed. |
| Required plan | Exact plan name, minimum price or features, postpaid requirement, AutoPay condition and line requirement. |
| Taxes and fees | Device taxes, regulatory fees, surcharges and recurring service taxes in your location. |
| Activation or connection charge | One-time fee for opening or upgrading the line, including any waiver conditions. |
| Trade-in | Eligible models, condition rules, ownership requirements, deadlines and the value you would receive elsewhere. |
| Exit consequences | What happens to credits and the unpaid device balance if you cancel, change plans, pay off the phone or upgrade. |
A credit is not the same as an instant discount. If a $900 phone receives $25 monthly credits for 36 months, the advertised device cost is reached only after all 36 credits post. Leaving after 12 months can leave both a device balance and 24 forfeited credits.

Start with the service plan you would choose without the phone
Write down the plan you would buy if you purchased an unlocked phone. Include the number of lines, expected data use, hotspot needs, international use, video quality, roaming and insurance. Then identify the promotion’s exact qualifying plan. The difference between those plans is the service premium you are paying to obtain the phone.
Compare recurring service, not headline pricing
- Use the regular price after any introductory period, not a temporary switcher or autopay headline.
- Include taxes, government surcharges and carrier fees. Some offers advertise a plan price before those amounts.
- Check whether the quoted price assumes AutoPay, paperless billing, a particular payment method or multiple lines.
- Confirm whether the promotion requires a new line, a port-in, a specific account type or a postpaid account.
- Compare included features you would otherwise purchase, such as hotspot data, roaming or higher data priority.
If the qualifying plan costs $35 more per month than your independent choice, that premium is $840 over 24 months or $1,260 over 36 months before taxes. A phone credit smaller than that premium may not be a bargain even when the device payment reaches zero.
Read the promotion’s conditions line by line
Ask the carrier for the full offer terms, not just a sales summary. Save a copy showing the device, plan, credit schedule, trade-in requirements and end date. Terms can vary by account, state, device, trade-in condition and date.

Service and plan eligibility
Determine whether eligibility ends when you move to a cheaper plan, remove a line or lose an AutoPay discount. T-Mobile’s promotion materials, for example, describe qualifying-plan price thresholds, AutoPay, taxes and fees, a device connection charge and, for some offers, trade-in conditions. Its promotion FAQ says service is generally required for promotional pricing and directs customers to the individual offer’s eligibility rules. Those requirements do not automatically apply to every T-Mobile promotion or any other carrier.
Credit timing
Find out when credits begin, whether the first credits are delayed, and whether a missed or reversed credit can be corrected. A 36-month installment term is not interchangeable with a 24-month term: the shorter term may have a higher monthly device payment, while the longer term extends the period during which you must preserve eligibility.
Trade-in requirements
Check the exact model list, storage tier, screen and battery condition, activation lock removal, delivery deadline and inspection process. Photograph the device, back up your data, record the tracking number and retain the acceptance confirmation. Ask what happens if inspection assigns a lower tier or rejects the device.

Early payoff and upgrade rules
Do not assume paying the device balance early accelerates the remaining credits. Verizon’s support FAQ says promotional credits can stop when the customer pays the device agreement early, upgrades early, cancels the promoted line or changes to an ineligible plan. AT&T offer terms similarly warn that early payoff or upgrade may stop credits and that cancellation can leave the remaining balance payable. These are carrier- and offer-specific provisions, so verify your own agreement.

Use the same time horizon for both choices. A useful comparison is the number of months you realistically expect to keep the line—often 24 or 36 months—but also test an early-exit month if your job, budget or coverage could change.
Carrier-promotion calculation
Use this worksheet:
Total carrier cost = upfront device and activation charges + taxes and fees + (qualifying plan price × months) + device installments − promotional credits − trade-in value credited by the carrier
For an early-exit scenario, stop future credits at the month you leave and add the device balance the agreement requires at that point. Do not subtract credits that have not yet posted.
Unlocked-phone calculation
For an independently purchased phone, calculate:
Total unlocked cost = phone purchase price + taxes and fees + (chosen plan price × months) + activation or SIM/eSIM charges − resale or trade-in value

Use the same tax assumptions and the same number of lines in both calculations. If you would trade in the old phone under either option, assign its realistic cash or resale value consistently rather than treating a conditional promotional value as guaranteed.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. Illustrative example
Suppose a $900 phone is financed for 36 months at $25 per month and receives a $25 monthly credit. The device net is $0 only while all 36 credits are earned. If the qualifying plan is $80 per month and your preferred independent plan is $50, the service premium is $30 monthly, or $1,080 over 36 months. Add taxes, fees, activation and any trade-in difference before deciding.
If you leave after month 12, the promotion has delivered 12 credits ($300). The remaining device principal may still be due under the installment agreement, while the remaining 24 credits are generally forfeited when the offer’s conditions are no longer met. Request the exact payoff figure; do not estimate it from the advertised discount.
What happens when you change, cancel or upgrade?
| Action | Possible result | What to confirm in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Cancel the promoted line | Future credits can stop, and the remaining device balance may become payable. | Effective cancellation date, final bill and payoff calculation. |
| Move to a cheaper or different plan | The new plan may be ineligible, ending credits while installments continue. | Eligible plan list and whether a change can be reversed. |
| Pay off the phone early | Some offers stop credits after payoff; others may handle it differently. | Whether credits survive payoff and the required payoff method. |
| Upgrade early | You may surrender the current device or pay its balance, and unused credits can end. | Upgrade program terms, trade-in obligation and credit treatment. |
| Transfer responsibility | A transfer, account change or line removal can alter eligibility. | Whether credits transfer and which account remains liable. |
AT&T’s current offer examples state that credits are applied over an installment term and can stop after cancellation, leaving the remaining device balance payable; they also warn that early payoff or upgrade may stop credits. Verizon’s FAQ describes similar stopping events. T-Mobile’s offer terms likewise warn that cancellation or early payoff can stop credits or make the financed balance due. Read your specific promotion because these statements are not universal rules for every offer.

Buying an unlocked smartphone separately can cost more at checkout but gives you control over the service plan and timing. It is especially relevant when you expect to change providers, move, reduce service, sell the phone or upgrade before the promotional term ends.
- Flexibility: You can switch compatible providers without forfeiting carrier credits because there are no credits to preserve.
- Plan freedom: You can select prepaid, postpaid or a lower-cost tier that the phone promotion would exclude.
- Clear ownership: You own the device after purchase rather than owing an installment balance.
- Upfront risk: You pay the purchase price and taxes without relying on future bill credits.
- Compatibility responsibility: Verify the exact model’s network bands, eSIM/SIM support, 5G capability and carrier certification. “Unlocked” does not guarantee compatibility with every network.
The FCC’s 2022 mobile-competition report noted that users switching between compatible providers can unlock phones for use on a new network, increasing consumer flexibility. Unlocking policy, eligibility and timing still depend on the carrier and device agreement; ask whether the phone is unlocked at purchase or only after stated requirements are met.
Carrier-specific questions to ask
Verizon
- Which events stop credits: cancellation, early payoff, early upgrade or a plan change?
- Does the qualifying plan remain eligible if you remove another line or change account features?
- What device balance is due if credits stop in month 6, 12 or 24?
Verizon’s support FAQ says many discounts arrive as monthly bill credits and can end before all credits are received when eligibility conditions are no longer met.

AT&T
- Is the offer limited to eligible postpaid service, a new line or a port-in?
- Are taxes, fees and any activation charge excluded from the advertised discount?
- How are credits handled after cancellation, early payoff or upgrade?
AT&T’s offer pages provide examples of credits spread across an installment term and state that cancellation can stop credits and make the remaining device balance payable. The examples are offer-specific, not a guarantee for every device.
T-Mobile
- What plan-price threshold and AutoPay condition apply?
- Is there a device connection charge, and are taxes and fees excluded?
- Does the offer require a trade-in, an added line or a particular device condition?
T-Mobile’s offer pages describe these conditions for particular promotions and warn that cancellation or early payoff can stop credits or make the financed balance due. Check the exact promotion details attached to your account.
Historical promotion figures: useful context, not current prices
The FCC’s 2022 report cited these dated examples:
| Carrier example | Published discount | Credit term and condition |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T, August 2022 | Up to $700 off an iPhone 13 | 36 monthly credits |
| Verizon, 2022 | Up to $800 | 36 monthly credits |
| T-Mobile, 2022 | Up to $800 | 24 monthly credits; adding a line and selecting a specified plan were required |
These figures illustrate how long-term credits worked at that time. They are not current offers, market averages or evidence that one carrier is cheaper today. Current prices and eligibility change by device, account and date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step decision process
- Define your horizon. Choose the months you expect to keep the line and an early-exit month for stress testing.
- Get the written promotion. Record the device price, installment term, credit amount, plan name, trade-in rules, fees and stopping events.
- Price your independent plan. Use the service tier you would select without the promotion, including all recurring taxes and fees you can estimate.
- Value the trade-in twice. Record the carrier’s conditional value and the realistic value from selling or trading the phone elsewhere.
- Compute both totals. Apply the formulas above for the full horizon and the early-exit month.
- Check coverage. Verify service at home, work, travel destinations and other locations that matter; a lower price is not useful if coverage fails.
- Test flexibility. Ask whether the phone will be unlocked, whether credits survive a plan change and what balance is due after payoff or cancellation.
- Save evidence. Keep screenshots or PDFs of the offer, order confirmation, trade-in receipt and device agreement.
- Choose only after the worst case is acceptable. If an early move would create a balance you cannot pay, the apparent discount may be too restrictive for your situation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling the phone “free” before the credits are earned
Use “net device cost after all scheduled credits” instead. The distinction prevents a zero-dollar monthly device payment from hiding a multi-year commitment.
Comparing only device prices
Add the qualifying-plan premium. A $700 credit can be outweighed by a plan that costs $30 more per month than your alternative.

Assuming the installment balance disappears when credits stop
The financing agreement and service plan are separate obligations. Future credits can end while the remaining principal remains due.
Paying off early to obtain an unlocked phone
Early payoff may terminate credits. Confirm the carrier’s written treatment before making a lump-sum payment.
Ignoring trade-in inspection
Document condition and shipping. A cracked screen, missing activation-lock removal or late delivery can change the promotional tier or invalidate it.
Using an “unlocked” phone without checking compatibility
Confirm the exact model and network support with the intended provider. Regional variants can differ in bands, eSIM support and certification.
Relying on an old screenshot
Promotion terms and prices change. Recheck the offer on the date you order and retain the version associated with your transaction.

|---|---|
| How many lines and months are in the comparison? | Record the line count and full/early-exit horizons. |
| What is the phone’s full price and installment payment? | Include down payment and device taxes. |
| What credit posts each month and for how long? | Record start date, duration and any delay. |
| What exact plan is required? | Record plan name, price, AutoPay and line conditions. |
| What are the one-time and recurring fees? | Include activation, connection, taxes and surcharges. |
| What trade-in value is guaranteed? | Separate conditional promotional value from outside value. |
| What happens if you leave, downgrade, pay off or upgrade? | Record credit forfeiture and device payoff rules. |
| What would the unlocked alternative cost? | Use the same horizon, taxes, fees and resale assumptions. |
Bottom-line decision rule
Accept the carrier-discounted phone when the required plan provides features you genuinely need, you expect to remain eligible through the credit term, and the all-in total beats a compatible unlocked phone plus your preferred service. Choose the unlocked route when plan flexibility, an early upgrade, a likely move or uncertain coverage matters more than delayed credits. In either case, decide from the written terms and the early-exit calculation—not from the word “free.”
