The right phone depends on what you mean by “desktop-style.” There are three different experiences: running Android apps in a desktop-like session on an external monitor, viewing and controlling the phone from a Windows PC, or trying to run a native Linux or Windows desktop operating system. Current official documentation supports the first two. It does not establish that the phones covered here run a native Linux or Windows desktop OS.
Start by choosing your display target, required apps, connection type and operating-system requirement. Then verify the exact regional phone model and its installed Android and vendor software version. Family names alone are not enough: manufacturers exclude individual models and separate external-display features from PC-control features.
First define the desktop experience you need
“Desktop-style phone” is not a single feature. A phone can provide a taskbar and resizable Android windows on a monitor, show a live phone window inside Windows, or simply let you transfer files to a Linux computer. Those are materially different workflows.
1. A separate Android desktop on a monitor
A supported phone starts a desktop session on an external display. Android apps appear in freely resizable windows, with a taskbar and side-by-side multitasking. The phone remains the computer; the monitor is a larger workspace. This is useful for documents, browser tabs, messaging and other Android applications that behave well with keyboard and mouse input.

2. A phone window inside Windows
Windows tools can mirror or present a virtual phone window on the PC. You interact with the phone using the computer’s mouse, trackpad, keyboard or touch screen. This is remote phone interaction, not proof that the PC is running an Android desktop session on a second monitor.
3. Native Linux or Windows desktop software
The official material available for the phones discussed here does not establish a native Linux distribution or native Windows desktop operating system running directly on the handset. Android desktop mode should not be advertised as a Linux workstation, and a Windows companion feature should not be described as Windows running on the phone.
Match the phone to your setup
| Your intended setup | Feature to investigate | What it actually provides | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone plus an HDMI monitor or TV | Android connected-display support or Samsung DeX | A desktop-like Android session with windows, taskbar and external input | Only supported phones and software versions work; Android app behavior varies |
| Phone controlled from a Windows PC | Samsung DeX on PC, Motorola Smart Connect or Microsoft Phone Link | Mirroring, a virtual phone window or phone-screen interaction | PC support is separate from external-display support and may have model exclusions |
| Phone connected to a Linux computer | Exact distribution, connection method and companion software | Potential file transfer, display or control workflow if separately supported | No comprehensive model-by-model Linux compatibility matrix is established here |
| Native Linux applications on the handset | A verified Linux environment for the exact model | Only what that specific project and device support | The cited Android desktop features do not establish this capability |
External-display support in current Android
Google announced general availability of connected-display support with Android 16 QPR3. According to Android Developers on 3 March 2026, when a supported Android phone or foldable is connected to an external display, a new desktop session starts on that display. The session has a taskbar, supports multiple apps side by side and allows freely resizable windows.

Treat that as a starting list rather than a guarantee for every storage, carrier or regional variant. Check the current support entry for the exact model and confirm that the phone has the required Android release.
What the Android session can and cannot do
- It can give Android applications a larger, windowed workspace on the connected display.
- It can place several applications side by side instead of forcing one full-screen phone view.
- It is designed for mouse and keyboard use alongside the display.
- It does not turn an Android application into a desktop Linux or Windows application.
- It does not guarantee that every app supports keyboard shortcuts, drag-and-drop, multiple windows or large-screen layouts.
Before buying, list the applications you actually use. A browser, office editor or terminal-style Android app may work acceptably in a window, while an app designed only for touch may remain awkward at monitor size.
Samsung phones: separate DeX choices from PC control
Samsung DeX is a desktop-style environment for supported Galaxy phones and tablets connected to an external monitor or TV. Samsung’s setup guidance describes an HDMI connection plus a mouse and keyboard. Use Samsung’s current compatibility page for the definitive device list because older developer documentation includes legacy models that may no longer represent current software support.

External monitor or TV
For a monitor workflow, investigate whether the exact Galaxy model supports DeX and whether its current One UI version preserves that support. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or hub may be required, and the phone must support video output through that port. A hub cannot add video output or DeX to an unsupported phone.
Windows PC
Samsung distinguishes DeX on an external display from DeX on PC. Its current support information lists the Galaxy S26 series as DeX-compatible, while also stating that DeX on PC is not supported on the S25 and S26 series, Z Fold7, Z Flip7 and devices updated to Android 15 with One UI 7 or later. Those users are directed toward Link to Windows, which is a different feature and does not make the Windows computer show the same Android desktop session.
Therefore, “this Galaxy supports DeX” is incomplete. Ask whether you need DeX on a monitor, DeX on a Windows PC, or both. A phone can support one path while excluding the other.
Example: Galaxy S26 Ultra
The Galaxy S26 family is named in both Samsung’s current DeX information and Google’s connected-display announcement. The S26 Ultra is consequently a reasonable example to investigate for an external-monitor Android desktop. Confirm the local model number, current software and accessory requirements before purchase. This support does not mean the handset runs a native Linux or Windows desktop operating system, and no price is assumed here.
Motorola phones: Smart Connect on a PC
Motorola Smart Connect documents three related PC experiences: screen mirroring, a virtual-phone window and a Mobile desktop experience. Cross control allows the computer’s keyboard and mouse to interact with the phone. These modes can be useful when your main screen is a Windows PC rather than a separate monitor.

The cited Motorola help material does not provide a universal compatible-model list. Do not infer support from the Motorola brand or from the presence of Smart Connect on another handset. Open the support page for the exact model and check which Smart Connect modes it supports, then verify the required phone and PC software versions.

Choose the Smart Connect mode deliberately
- Mirroring: shows the phone display on the PC. It is appropriate for occasional viewing or control but remains a phone-shaped interface.
- Virtual phone: opens a phone view in a window so you can interact with apps without constantly picking up the handset.
- Mobile desktop: provides a more desktop-oriented workspace where Motorola supports it.
- Cross control: shares keyboard and mouse input; it does not by itself add desktop window management or Linux applications.
Windows Phone Link: convenient, but not a desktop replacement
Microsoft Phone Link’s Phone screen feature is available on supported Android 10 or later devices in select markets. It requires Link to Windows on the phone, the Phone Link application on the PC and both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Microsoft describes interaction through the PC’s mouse, trackpad, keyboard or touch screen.
Phone Link is best understood as phone-screen interaction from Windows. It is not evidence that every Android phone can create a full external-display desktop session, and it does not provide a native Windows environment on the handset. Check Microsoft’s live supported-device list because market availability, model support and feature coverage change.
When Phone Link is the better fit
- You already work at a Windows PC and want to answer messages or use selected phone apps without reaching for the handset.
- You can keep the PC and phone on the same Wi-Fi network.
- You do not need a second monitor with an independent Android desktop session.
What “Linux use” can realistically mean
Linux appears in this buying question in at least two ways. You may want the phone to act as a Linux desktop computer, or you may simply want to connect the phone to an existing Linux workstation. Those requirements are not interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing Linux applications on the phone
The Android connected-display and DeX documents describe Android applications in desktop-style sessions. They do not establish that the cited phones boot or host a native Linux desktop distribution. If a Linux desktop or Linux-only application is mandatory, do not select a phone based on DeX, Android 16 connected displays, Smart Connect or Phone Link alone.
Connecting the phone to a Linux computer
A Linux workstation may support file transfer, screen control or other integration through distribution-specific tools. The official sources summarized here do not provide a complete compatibility matrix by Linux distribution, phone model and connection method. Verify the exact distribution, desktop environment, USB or network protocol and current companion software before treating Linux connectivity as a purchase requirement.
If you cannot name the Linux application, distribution and connection method you need, defer the purchase decision. First define whether you need a terminal, remote desktop, file synchronization, graphical phone control or a full Linux session.

A practical buying procedure
- Write the target screen. Choose one: external monitor or TV, Windows PC window, Linux workstation, or a combination. A phone that satisfies one target may fail another.
- List essential applications. Record the Android apps, browser services and input-heavy tasks you expect to use. Confirm that each app works in resizable windows and accepts keyboard and mouse input where required.
- Pick the connection type. Decide between wired USB-C-to-HDMI, a compatible wireless display path, or a network-based Windows feature. Wired display output normally gives the most predictable latency, but it requires compatible video output and an adapter or hub.
- Check the exact model. Search the current manufacturer support page using the complete model designation, region and carrier variant. Do not rely on a family name such as “S series,” “Pixel” or “Motorola.”
- Check software versions. Record the installed Android release and vendor interface version. Feature support can change after an update; Samsung’s One UI 7 and Android 15 exclusions for DeX on PC demonstrate why this check matters.
- Verify the Windows path separately. For Samsung, check DeX on PC rather than only external-display DeX. For Motorola, confirm the relevant Smart Connect mode. For Phone Link, check Microsoft’s supported-device page, Android version requirement, market availability and same-Wi-Fi condition.
- Confirm accessories and power. Check whether the phone needs a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, a hub with charging passthrough, a monitor, Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse, and adequate power while driving the display.
- Test the workflow before migrating. Connect the phone, launch the applications you listed and perform representative tasks: file upload, keyboard shortcuts, window resizing, copy and paste, video playback and notification handling.
Connection and accessory requirements
USB-C-to-HDMI adapters and hubs
Samsung documents HDMI display connection for DeX, and Google documents connected-display sessions for supported Android devices. The adapter must match the phone’s video-output capability and the display’s input. A hub is not a compatibility fix: it cannot make an unsupported handset output video or install a desktop mode.
If you need to charge while connected, choose a hub with power delivery that the phone and charger can use. Check port layout, HDMI resolution support and whether the hub’s USB ports can handle your keyboard, mouse or storage device. The exact capabilities depend on the adapter and phone; do not assume every USB-C accessory behaves identically.
Keyboard and mouse
A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse can complete an Android desktop-style setup, while USB devices can connect through a hub. Google identifies mouse and keyboard compatibility as part of its connected-display direction, and Motorola documents keyboard and mouse control in Smart Connect. These accessories improve input but cannot add DeX, Smart Connect, video output or Linux support to a phone that lacks them.
Monitor, TV and network conditions
For a separate display, check available HDMI or compatible wireless-input options and place the phone where its cable, charging lead and wireless peripherals remain reliable. For Phone Link, the PC and phone must share a Wi-Fi network. Network congestion can affect responsiveness even when the phone and PC are otherwise supported.

App behavior is as important as the shell
A taskbar and resizable windows make the interface look like a desktop, but they do not rewrite an app. Check whether the app supports landscape orientation, large-screen layouts, keyboard shortcuts, right-click behavior, drag-and-drop, external storage and simultaneous windows. Some Android apps may scale gracefully; others may remain optimized for touch.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating DeX, Smart Connect and Phone Link as the same feature
Fix: identify the target screen first. DeX generally describes a Samsung desktop environment, Smart Connect covers several Motorola PC experiences, and Phone Link presents supported phone functions in Windows. Compare the exact mode, not just the brand name.
Mistake: assuming a newer flagship supports every desktop feature
Fix: read the current support page for the exact regional model and software. Samsung’s current exclusions show that a newer phone can retain external-display support while losing DeX on PC.
Mistake: buying an adapter before checking video output
Fix: confirm wired display support first. An HDMI adapter cannot create a video signal or desktop mode that the handset does not provide.

Fix: write down the Linux distribution, application and connection method you require. If those details cannot be verified for the phone, choose a conventional Linux computer or remote-access design instead of assuming Android mode will substitute for it.
Mistake: assuming Windows support means a full PC replacement
Fix: determine whether you need mirrored phone control, a virtual phone window, Mobile desktop or a true Windows application environment. Phone Link and similar tools do not install Windows desktop software on the phone.
Troubleshooting after purchase
The monitor shows no signal
- Confirm the phone model supports wired video output and the selected desktop feature.
- Reconnect the USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or hub and select the correct monitor input.
- Test a known-compatible cable and display.
- Check whether the hub provides power passthrough if the phone requires sustained charging.
- Install the current phone software and recheck the manufacturer’s support page.
The phone appears in Windows but cannot be controlled
- For Phone Link, confirm Link to Windows, supported Android version, select-market availability and shared Wi-Fi.
- For Samsung, verify that the model and One UI version still support DeX on PC; external-display DeX does not prove PC support.
- For Motorola, confirm that the specific Smart Connect mode is supported by the handset and PC software.
Apps open but feel unusable
- Try a different window size or landscape orientation.
- Check the app’s large-screen and keyboard behavior before depending on it for work.
- Use a Bluetooth or USB mouse for controls designed around touch.
- Keep a conventional PC available for desktop-only applications, extensions or Linux binaries.
Final selection checklist
- I have chosen an external monitor, Windows PC, Linux workstation or a clearly defined combination.
- I know whether I need an Android desktop session, phone mirroring, a virtual phone window or native desktop software.
- The exact phone model and regional variant appear on the relevant current support page.
- The installed Android and vendor interface versions meet the feature requirements.
- My essential apps work in windows and accept the input method I plan to use.
- My adapter, hub, monitor, keyboard, mouse and charging arrangement are compatible.
- I have checked Windows market, Wi-Fi and companion-app requirements.
- I have not assumed that Android desktop mode is native Linux or Windows.
Feature availability, supported models, regional restrictions and retail inventory can change. Recheck Google Android Developers, Samsung Support, Samsung Developer, Motorola Support and Microsoft Support immediately before buying and again after major software updates.
