Choose the computer that meets your workload at a price you can verify today, then value upgradeability as insurance rather than assuming a future RAM purchase will be cheap. Compare the exact configuration and local price of each PC, check whether its memory is replaceable, and calculate the cost of reaching your target capacity before you buy.

Memory-market forecasts explain why prices and stock may move, but they do not tell you what a particular retailer charges. Your decision should therefore combine a date-stamped market view with model-specific specifications, current regional listings, and a realistic estimate of how long you will keep the machine.

What the RAM market means for a PC buyer

DRAM pricing is under supply pressure because manufacturers are allocating more advanced-process capacity to high-performance server products. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook forecasts conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and warns that PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as capacity shifts toward servers. These are industry contract-price estimates, not a promise that every shop will raise a particular computer’s price by the same percentage. See TrendForce’s 4Q26 outlook.

An earlier TrendForce report from July 3, 2026 forecast a 13–18% quarter-over-quarter increase for 3Q26 and described the market as extremely tight. It is useful context, but the September forecast is the newer quarterly view.

TrendForce’s July 30, 2026 longer-range outlook estimated a DRAM sufficiency ratio of approximately −1% to −2% in 2026 and said the supply-demand gap could widen in 2027. Capacity announced for 2027 was not expected to make a meaningful production contribution until 2028 because construction, equipment installation, and preparation take time. That is a forecast, not a guaranteed shortage in every country. Read the 2027 outlook for its assumptions.

Gartner’s February 26, 2026 forecast took a broader view: combined DRAM and SSD prices could rise 130% by the end of 2026 versus 2025, average PC prices could rise 17%, and worldwide PC shipments could fall 10.4%. Gartner presents these as global forecasts, not final results or a prediction for every model. Its release is available at Gartner’s February 26, 2026 forecast.

Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal said, “This is the steepest contraction in device shipments witnessed in over a decade. Higher prices will narrow the range of devices available, prompting buyers to hold on to devices for longer, fundamentally altering upgrade cycles.” Gartner also forecast that “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” Both statements are forecasts tied to that February 2026 release, not guarantees about a particular retailer or country.

Why contract forecasts do not equal your checkout price

Contract DRAM prices are negotiated upstream between suppliers and large buyers. A PC’s retail price also includes the processor, graphics hardware, storage, display, chassis, power supply, labor, warranty, distribution, currency effects, promotions, and the manufacturer’s inventory bought at an earlier price. A 10–15% contract increase therefore cannot be converted into an exact percentage for a finished laptop or desktop.

Manufacturers may respond to expensive memory in several ways:

  • Raise the price of a configuration while leaving its specification unchanged.
  • Keep the headline price but ship less memory or storage in an entry configuration.
  • Delay or limit particular configurations when modules are unavailable.
  • Absorb some cost temporarily through margin or a promotion.

Because responses differ by product line and region, record the price and included memory of the exact SKU you can buy, on the day you intend to order. Treat market forecasts as timing and risk context, not as a substitute for a current quote.

1. Capture the exact configuration

Write down the manufacturer’s model number, processor, graphics solution, storage, display (for a laptop), operating system, warranty, included RAM, and the retailer’s final price in your region. Two products with similar names can use different motherboards, memory layouts, or soldered components. Include shipping and taxes when those are known at checkout.

2. Match memory to your workload

List the applications you actually run together, not just the most demanding application you open occasionally. Consider browser tabs, office or school software, photo and video tools, software development environments, virtual machines, games, and local data-analysis workloads. Add headroom for the period you expect to keep the PC. There is no evidence-based capacity that is correct for every buyer; a sensible amount depends on workload, budget, and expected useful life.

3. Verify whether an upgrade is physically possible

Check the exact computer or motherboard service manual, not a family-level product page. Confirm:

  • Whether memory is soldered, socketed, or a mixture of both.
  • The memory generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5.
  • The form factor: desktop DIMM or laptop SO-DIMM.
  • The number of slots and whether any are occupied.
  • The maximum supported capacity and per-module limit.
  • Supported speeds, voltage, and configuration rules.
  • Whether replacing a module affects the warranty or requires special disassembly.

A vendor compatibility list can reduce guesswork. Framework’s September 8, 2026 update discusses volatile memory pricing and directs buyers to modules it has tested for its systems; that guidance applies to the named systems and should not be generalized to unrelated computers. See the vendor’s memory-pricing and compatibility update.

4. Price the upgrade before buying the base PC

For a planned upgrade, calculate:

effective cost = PC price now + compatible module price + shipping/tax + installation cost

Use a current listing in your country for the compatible module. Availability matters as much as the nominal price: a module that is frequently out of stock may force you to wait or buy a less suitable substitute. Compare the effective cost with a factory configuration that already meets your workload. Volatile prices mean neither option is universally cheaper.

5. Compare the risk of waiting

If the PC is needed for work, study, or a time-sensitive project, include the cost of delay and the possibility that the desired configuration disappears. If your current computer is adequate, waiting can let you watch local prices and stock without committing to a forecast. Do not assume that a later upgrade will cost less merely because memory prices have fallen in a previous cycle.

Replaceable versus soldered memory

Replaceable RAM

Socketed memory lets you change modules, subject to the system’s limits. It can make a lower-memory purchase reasonable when a compatible module is readily available and the total cost is favorable. It also gives you a recovery path if an individual module fails outside the return period.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Do not confuse “has a slot” with “supports any capacity.” Firmware, chipset limits, module density, and the number of occupied slots can all restrict the result. A system with two slots may ship with two smaller modules, leaving no free slot; reaching a larger capacity then requires replacing both.

Soldered or fixed memory

Soldered RAM cannot be replaced by installing a retail module. Treat the factory capacity as the lifetime capacity of the computer unless the manufacturer explicitly documents a separate expansion mechanism. Paying for a larger configuration at purchase may be safer than choosing a cheaper fixed-memory model that could become restrictive as software grows.

Mixed designs

Some laptops combine soldered memory with one socket. The socket may add capacity, but the resulting mode, speed, and maximum total depend on the model’s documentation. Verify the exact supported combinations rather than assuming that an additional module will provide the same performance as a matched factory configuration.

How to choose for different workloads

Use workload evidence to set a capacity target, then apply the upgrade and price checks. The categories below are decision prompts, not universal capacity prescriptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Everyday productivity and study

Measure how many browser tabs, video calls, documents, and collaboration tools you keep open simultaneously. A lower-memory configuration may be adequate when your use is light and the machine has replaceable RAM. For a fixed-memory laptop that you expect to keep for many years, prioritize a configuration with enough headroom at purchase.

Programming and technical work

Account for the editor, browser, build tools, containers, local databases, emulators, and virtual machines running at the same time. Check the maximum supported memory before choosing a compact laptop; a machine that cannot be expanded may force an earlier replacement even if its processor remains fast enough.

Photo, video, and 3D creation

Project resolution, layered assets, timelines, effects, and the number of applications open together can change memory demand substantially. Compare a factory configuration that supports your largest current projects with the cost and stock risk of a later module. Also check whether the graphics workload uses shared system memory, because that reduces memory available to applications.

Gaming

Use the requirements of the games you play, plus the memory consumed by voice chat, browsers, recording tools, and mods. A desktop with accessible DIMM slots may offer a practical path to more capacity, but only after you verify the motherboard’s supported modules and slot population rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Virtual machines, engineering, and data work

Estimate the memory assigned to each virtual machine or dataset and leave capacity for the host operating system. For these workloads, expansion limits can matter more than a small difference in processor speed. Document the maximum supported capacity and the number of modules required before you select a chassis.

DDR generation, form factor, and compatibility checks

Memory generation is not interchangeable: DDR4 modules do not fit DDR5 slots, and a desktop DIMM is not a laptop SO-DIMM. Even within one generation, speed ratings and module organization can affect compatibility. Use the system manual or motherboard manufacturer’s qualified list as the authority.

When selecting a replacement or addition, match the documented generation and form factor first. Then check capacity per module, supported speed, voltage, and whether the manufacturer recommends a matched kit. If you mix modules, the system may run at the slowest common setting or may fail to boot; the documentation should determine whether the combination is supported.

After installation, confirm the new total in the firmware setup screen and the operating system. Run the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics or a trusted memory test before relying on the PC for important work. If the system does not start, power it off, reseat the modules, restore the documented slot order, and test one known-compatible module at a time.

Factory memory versus buying a smaller configuration

Choice Potential advantage Risk to check
Factory configuration that meets the workload Known compatibility and no installation task The upfront price may be higher, and the configuration may still use fixed memory
Lower-memory PC with a planned upgrade Can reduce the initial price when a compatible module is available Module price, stock, installation, slot limits, and future price increases can erase the saving
Fixed-memory PC at a lower capacity Lower purchase price No practical path to add memory; replacement may arrive sooner

Make the comparison with real numbers from the same region and date. The available evidence does not establish a universal rule that one strategy is cheaper, so calculate both rather than relying on a general buying slogan.

Timing your purchase while prices are volatile

Buy now when the need is immediate

If the computer is required for work or school, select a configuration that meets the workload now and has a documented upgrade path if possible. A reliable, in-stock system can be worth more than a theoretical saving that depends on a future module becoming cheaper and available.

Wait when your current PC is sufficient

Track the exact models and memory configurations you would buy, recording local prices and stock dates. Recheck the total cost rather than only the headline PC price, because a promotion may apply to one configuration while the memory you planned to add rises in price.

Use forecasts correctly

TrendForce’s 10–15% 4Q26 contract forecast and Gartner’s 17% aggregate PC-price forecast indicate market risk, but neither tells you that your chosen laptop will rise by that amount. Use them to justify checking prices and upgrade paths carefully, not to manufacture a deadline or predict a guaranteed discount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Define the applications you will run together and how long you expect to keep the PC.
  2. Record the exact SKU, included RAM, storage, processor, graphics, warranty, and final local price.
  3. Read the model-specific service manual to identify soldered and socketed memory.
  4. Confirm generation, form factor, slots, maximum capacity, module limits, and supported configurations.
  5. Find a currently available compatible module and record its complete delivered price.
  6. Calculate the effective cost of the base PC plus the upgrade, then compare it with a factory configuration.
  7. Consider delay, return policy, installation difficulty, and the risk that the module goes out of stock.
  8. Buy the configuration that meets the workload within your budget without depending on an unsupported upgrade.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using a forecast as a retail quote

Contract and aggregate forecasts describe market direction. They do not replace a current regional listing. Always price the exact SKU.

Assuming every RAM slot is upgradeable

Some systems have soldered memory, occupied slots, or limits below the capacity you want. Confirm the service documentation before purchase.

Buying by generation name alone

“DDR5” does not identify the correct form factor, capacity, speed, or supported module organization. Match every specification the manual lists.

Ignoring the cost of the second module

If both slots are occupied, a capacity increase may require replacing the original modules rather than adding one. Include the replacement cost in your calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a capacity without a workload

A universal number can leave a light user overspending or a creator, developer, or virtual-machine user constrained. Base the target on simultaneous applications and expected service life.

Assuming future stock will be normal

TrendForce expects PC DRAM supply pressure to continue as capacity moves toward server products. A later upgrade may be available, more expensive, or temporarily unavailable; verify today’s options before selecting a base configuration that depends on it.

Bottom-line decision rule

Buy the exact PC whose current configuration fits your real workload at a price you can verify locally. Prefer replaceable memory when it provides useful flexibility, but assign that flexibility a value only after confirming compatibility, maximum capacity, and the delivered price of a module. For fixed-memory systems, treat the factory capacity as permanent. Market forecasts support careful timing and comparison; they do not justify converting an industry percentage into a guaranteed retail price or a one-size-fits-all RAM recommendation.
