Choose a PC by matching its CPU, graphics card and VRAM, RAM, and SSD to the recommended requirements of the exact simulators you plan to play. In the three examples below, 32 GB of RAM and a discrete graphics card with at least 8 GB of VRAM recur in recommended specifications—but neither is a universal guarantee of smooth play. Your resolution, graphics settings, VR plans, add-ons, and the games themselves all matter.
Start with the games and the way you will play
Write down the titles you expect to play, then note whether you intend to use a standard monitor at 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, or play in VR. Requirements are not a promise of a particular frame rate, and the same PC may feel different across games and settings.
Use each publisher’s recommended or ideal tier as your starting point—not just its minimum tier. Microsoft says Flight Simulator can run at lower graphical settings on less powerful systems, while higher settings put more strain on the PC. Its support guidance also notes that particular settings and setups can call for more powerful hardware. Compare the published requirements
These are publisher or platform-listed specifications, not independently tested comparisons. “Recommended” and “ideal” are labels used by the respective sources, so do not assume that similarly named graphics cards will perform equally in different games.

Star Citizen’s developer updated its requirements on September 23, 2026, and says the game is still in development, so specifications may change. It also warns that performance, frame rates, and stability can vary with in-game location, server population, background applications, and network conditions. Read the current Star Citizen system requirements.
The DCS figures are from its Steam listing. Microsoft’s tiers are listed targets, not benchmark results. Check the publishers’ current pages again when buying, especially if updates or add-ons have changed the requirements.

Choose the graphics card and CPU as a pair
Compare the CPU and GPU together against the requirements for your games. Check the exact GPU model and its VRAM rather than relying on a broad label such as “gaming graphics.” The examples list 8 GB VRAM at recommended tiers, while Microsoft’s ideal Flight Simulator 2024 tier specifies 12 GB. That makes VRAM and the game’s own tier useful screening criteria, not a universal rule that determines performance by itself.

Plan RAM and SSD capacity for the whole library
RAM
All three examples list 32 GB at a recommended tier. Microsoft’s ideal tier lists 64 GB. Treat 32 GB as a useful comparison point for these titles, not a blanket requirement for every flight game or workload. If comparing PCs with different memory configurations, confirm the installed capacity and whether it can be upgraded.
SSD space
Storage figures differ substantially: Star Citizen specifies a 150+ GB SSD at both tiers; DCS lists 500 GB available at its recommended tier; Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 lists 50 GB. Allow space for the largest game you will install, other titles, and anticipated add-ons rather than sizing a drive around the smallest figure. Check whether a PC’s stated storage is usable capacity and whether another drive can be added.

- Cooling and noise: Look for a case and cooling setup suited to sustained gaming, and consider noise if the PC will sit near you.
- Power supply and case size: Confirm the power supply and physical space are appropriate for the installed parts and any likely upgrade.
- Warranty and total price: Compare coverage and the full cost of the configuration, including any needed storage or memory upgrades.
- Laptop or desktop: The requirements here do not establish laptop-specific equivalents. Verify the exact laptop GPU and memory configuration rather than assuming a laptop model name matches a desktop card.
Choose flight controls separately
A keyboard and mouse or gamepad can be enough to start, but dedicated controls may suit your flying style. Microsoft lists a gamepad or joystick for aircraft control and identifies options such as HOTAS, a stick or yoke, throttle quadrant, rudder pedals, head tracking, and VR. DCS likewise lists joystick, pedals, VR, and TrackIR among recommended input options. These are peripheral choices, not substitutes for meeting the PC requirements. Use this buying checklist
- List the exact games you want to play and whether you will use a monitor or VR.
- For each title, check the publisher’s current recommended or ideal tier and any notes about settings, resolution, or VR.
- Match the PC’s CPU and graphics card to those targets; verify the exact GPU model and VRAM.
- Compare installed RAM with the requirements for your titles, and check upgrade options if needed.
- Size the SSD for the largest title, add-ons, and the rest of your library.
- Check cooling, noise, power supply, case size, warranty, and upgradeability before comparing final prices.
- Select any joystick, HOTAS, yoke, pedals, head-tracking gear, or VR headset as a separate, compatible purchase.
